who's working out? - prospect workouts

Some of the recent prospect workouts caught my attention so I wanted to post this list I saw on another site (kudos to C.U.B., and I hope he doesn't mind).

Workouts don't necessarily mean a thing, so you're free to dismiss this information as useless. On the other hand, teams don't fly prospects in for no reason; they want to look at them up close.

Projected draft ranges are CUB's.

prospects that intrigued me

One that may surprise others is Roy Miller. I’m looking at a lot of poor values for NT if — as expected — we miss on Raji.

It looks like we could miss out on a good value at NT, and I’m far from sold on the mid-round prospects, so it’s sort of barren until we reach the late rounds and may then take some ‘flyers’ on prospects. My comments here have nothing to do with the fact that only two NTs have been worked out, which may be a coincidence.

Wood looks like a wonderful prospect for us, so I’m crossing my fingers and hope that they draft him.

The RBs are interesting. Lots of you will enjoy seeing Moreno on the list, but I’m more excited by the newer possibilities such as Brown. We haven’t really talked about him. We’ve talked a little more about Jennings, but that was back when I was hoping he’d fall all the way to the 4th.

The long list of OLBs/DEs is really interesting. The bigger names are interesting, but some lesser names that didn’t seem like obvious picks for us are quite intriguing. Role players, perhaps? Veikune? He showed some great rushing ability at the Senior, and the same could be said for Butler, who has been dismissed as a too slow, overachieving DE who couldn’t make the switch to OLB34 until he proved everyone wrong at the combine — at least as far as his speed.

The CBs are interesting, very interesting. Besides Jenkins, Barnes is someone I’ve just started paying closer attention to since his name came up in my MOCK.

The Safety, Vaughn, is someone I could see us drafting. The 2nd is the place to find one but we look like we may be working on our front seven at that point, and I expect he’ll still be there in the 3rd..

There’s some real surprises, and I’ll have to look up a few. Quinn, Riley? Can’t say I recall hearing of them.

I think something is up with the DBs

I wouldn’t begin to presume to know what Denver is thinking with these looks, but DB is odd… I really think they are throwing out red herrings there, though i should note that I think the point of these workouts is to fill in the gaps on the scouting reports and combine interviews. I don’t put a lot of stock in them being major targets (though they could very well leave the meeting having had that effect), more like major questions. Also, there are a lot of players I think teams want to look at, but the players only have so many days to go around, and the teams only have so much time available for shopping, so the list gets pared down based on a lot fo factors.

But Chip and Barnes are just…odd…to see coming to Denver.

+1

I thought that too. Esp given how many of their FA signings have been in the secondary.

They’ve only marginally addressed what I consider the biggest weakness from last year’s D, the interior D line.

or maybe not.

needs V team building

The logic behind picking these DBs is fine, it’s not for an immediate starter but a future starter.

I don’t think we have to view possible additions to the d-backfield as a sign they won’t address the d-line. It might be reassuring to see a few more DLs but those players are obviously being looked at. We could spend some time talking about who ’isn’t’ here but there won’t be any kind of ‘completeness’ to the selection of workout invitees so we shouldn’t try to infer anything from who’s missing.

by Colinski on Mar 20, 2009 10:08 AM MDT up reply actions

why

I see the DBs as quite logical.

Jenkins merits consideration as our #1, and he’s clearly a value. The only reason I can see for not taking him at that position (besides opting for someone else) is general reluctance teams have over taking a S that high. I’m not sure I like that logic, it’s a little too dogmatic. I can see some merit in ‘positional impact’ reasoning behind the aversion to taking Safeties high, but he’s been projected by many NFL people (overheard on NFL channel) as a possible All-Pro FS in his 1st year. And he’s far from out of the picture at CB, too.

Jenkins seems to have suffered somewhat in the eyes of Broncos draftniks largely because he was unconsidered for so long. Everyone (pretty much) had him going higher, so he never entered discussions on our #1 pick. He lost a lot of value to the teams in front of us when he no longer looked viable as an elite CB, but I think he’s probably just missed on both his combine and pro day (faster, but not impressive for a fast track). It’s pushed him into a no man’s land, where previous suitors have left and possible future suitors have yet to put him on their cognitive maps.

Barnes is a very good choice for us in the 3rd. I didn’t start looking at him until he came under consideration in the 3rd rd. of my MOCK II. Scott Wright has talked about him lately and the size & speed combination plus some of comments on how he plays make him look very good. He was actually one of the highest BPAs in my MOCK II, so the logic was there for choosing him but, and as I said, I was having problems separating the CBs.

Vaughn is someone I’ve been talking about for a while. He was one of the few DBs who showed some speed at the combine, and his college production was quite good. A real good mix of speed and size/hitting, and a FS, too (hardly unimportant). It’s tough to complain about considering him, there aren’t many FSs in the 2nd -3rd tier range. The alternatives, like Bruton, might not please you. And in draft heavier in SSs, he’s a more balanced prospect. I like some other prospects, like McBath (SS), and Wiley(SS) as we go deeper in, but it’s somewhat barren in terms of future starter/backup quality after the 2nd, so looking at him makes great sense to me.

I put little stock in the fact that these prospects are here, though, but there was enough justification for why we would want to be looking at ‘these’ particular prospects to make their appearance look other than happenstance.

Workouts

I think there is a misunderstanding among many fans on the significance of workouts. I have read several “league sources” (had to throw that in) who say that teams don’t bring in players because they want them. They bring in the players they are unsure of. For example, last year the Broncos didn’t bring in Clady because they were already sold on him. But they did bring in Williams (I think that was the kid from Vandy) because they weren’t sure.

If that’s true, we could discern a few things from these workouts:
1. The Broncos are possibly wondering if Raji really warrants a #12 pick. This makes sense since he has been all over the board;
2. If the Broncos can’t find a defensive player worth #12 (a real possibility) they make take a RB (SteveO will be pleased);
3. Since we couldn’t get Anderson from the Texans they are probably still looking at a mid-round WR;
4. Although we seem to already have too many hybrid LB/DE types they are looking at more – possibly hedging our bets; and finally
5. no surprise here, we will be looking for youth at DB whihc makes sense since our average back there is like 40 or something.

setting their Big Board

Your 2. sums it up. I can see some uncertainty over who’s a worthwhile defensive pick at #12. Many of these invitees make sense as our #1. There’s a limit to positional need dictates, too; we need to find a pick with less risk (thus the Steve O pleasing RBs, etc.).

I’m much higher on the DE/OLB-34 possibilities than you. The positional impact for R-OLB is high enough to warrant adding there despite the crowding, and also because of the uncertainty of the success of the position switches. There are indications we might add early (~2nd) and/or later. Availability is also part of the story, their numbers make it more likely we’ll find a value in the group. I see strong possibilities for pass rushing specialization on the late picks. Veikune and Butler aren’t overall players, but they can certainly pass rush

Much of the story (to the extent that there is a story) is on draft positioning. They need to clear up uncertainties that exist surrounding the ranking of prospects at critical junctures — it’s about finding the highest utility for a game of ‘draft hopscotch.’

Beside clearing up rankings for set intervals (i.e., who’s a 1st, a 2nd, etc.), there could be some positional thinking going on thats concerned with specific functions. The WRs are an odd group if a team is looking for a feature-WR, and we know they’re not, but it’s a little more than looking for later round value and backups at WR, IMO. I can’t say have the faintest idea on Riley, but I think they’re thinking of specific duties (KR) and playmaking/alternative functions for WRs. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we draft White and use some Wildcat besides some alternative special packages.

Riley update: Still don’t know on him, but he is a KR. I see some niche potential and backup possibility. The logic shifts as we go to the late rounds, so the decisional criteria are not the same as for earlier picks.

One thing that is interesting is it seems that Denver has had a shift in this

I never remember Denver bringing in so many prospects, which I think is a great thing, seems like we would fly in maybe two or three guys and then draft someone we had never talked to or met. I like this approach.

thanks colinski

I appreciate you posting this. In the past Shanny rarely talked to the players he really wanted to draft. It will be interesting to see the new regimes approach.

I said it some where else

We have found plugs for our holes. they are not stop gap as they were last year but plugs, players who can play and know their limitations. Now we need to find guys to set in the hole and “repair” the hole. I like Dawkins but he isn’t long term. I like the Rb stable but I only see two long term guys there, Plus Champ needs someone to fill in when he leaves and to be honest I don’t see Jack Williams or Josh Bell filling in on that side. I do think we have found our #2 (Williams) and Nickle (Bell) for years, but it will take some time to develop these boys and under the right tutelage and scheme they will excel. That said they need time. I don’t know who we will draft, I see some bright spots in this years draft but I see a lot more Role players than anything else! I am not going to judge McDaniels based on this year. I will give him two years to see how things pan out because you can not take a 24-24 team and just by the market like in the Madden Video Game.
