Denver Broncos sign LB Andra Davis, S Renaldo Hill and DT Darrell Reid

The Denver Broncos on Monday signed unrestricted free-agent linebacker Andra Davis, safety Renaldo Hill and defensive tackle Darrell Reid, it was announced. As per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Davis (6-foot-1, 250 pounds) is an eighth-year linebacker who spent his first seven NFL seasons with Cleveland, which selected him in the fifth round (141st overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft from the University of Florida. He has played 105 career regular-season games (83 starts), totaling 908 tackles (557 solo), 8.5 sacks (60 yds.), eight interceptions (72 yds.), 28 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

A 16-game starter three times for his career, Davis has started at least 10 games in each of the previous six seasons with Cleveland. He started all 16 games for the Browns in 2008 and finished second on the club with 134 tackles (72 solo) while posting one interception.

Davis led the Browns with a career-high 207 tackles (119 solo) as a 16-game starter for the club in 2005. His five sacks with Cleveland in 2003 were a personal best and tied for the seventh-highest total among AFC linebackers.

At Florida, Davis was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference choice and a Butkus Award (nation's best linebacker) semifinalist during his senior season. He received All-America honors at Suwanee High School in Live Oak, Fla., and was born on Dec. 23, 1978.

Star-divide

Hill (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) is a ninth-year safety who joins the Broncos after playing for Miami (2006-08), Oakland (2005) and Arizona (2001-04). He entered the NFL with the Cardinals in 2001 as a seventh-round draft choice (202nd overall) from Michigan State University.

In 110 career regular-season games (83 starts), Hill has registered 476 tackles (371 solo), 15 interceptions (216 yds.), 51 pass breakups, 4.5 sacks (28.5 yds.), three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also has appeared in one postseason game for his career, logging a start for Miami in its AFC Wild Card Game during the 2008 season.

Hill has started at least 10 games during five of the last six seasons and has appeared in all 16 games in three of the last four years.

In 2008, Hill was a 15-game starter and saw time in every game for the Dolphins, tying for third on the club with 74 tackles (59 solo). His three interceptions (34 yds.) that year also tied for second on the team.

The safety notched a career-best five interceptions, including one returned 70 yards for a touchdown, for the Cardinals in 2003.

A three-year letterman at Michigan State, Hill started 35 games at cornerback for the Spartans and concluded his collegiate career with 182 tackles and nine interceptions. He was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten Conference selection as a senior after posting 71 tackles, three interceptions and 11 passes defensed.

Hill, who attended Chadsey High School in Detroit, was born on Nov. 12, 1978.

Reid (6-foot-2, 288 pounds) is a fifth-year defensive tackle who spent his first four NFL seasons with Indianapolis, which signed him as a college free agent in 2005 from the University of Minnesota. He has played 55 career regular-season games (2 starts), totaling 79 tackles (47 solo), 2.5 sacks (16.5 yds.) and two fumble recoveries.

Reid also posted a team-high 45 special-teams tackles in the regular season during his four seasons with the Colts.

The defensive tackle has seen time in seven career playoff games, including the Colts' Super Bowl XLI win against Chicago during the 2006 season. He owns four defensive tackles and nine special-teams stops for his postseason career.

Reid has appeared in all 16 games in each of the last two seasons and had 19 tackles (11 solo) along with two sacks (12 yds.) and 11 special-teams stops for the Colts in 2008. His 21 special-teams tackles for Indianapolis in 2007 were a team high and tied for second in the NFL.

A four-year starter at Minnesota, Reid totaled 157 career tackles (115 solo) and 16 sacks in 48 starts for the Golden Gophers. He was an honorable mention All-Big Ten Conference selection as a senior.

Reid attended Freehold Boro High school in Freehold, N.J., and was born on June 20, 1982.

Questions on Reid.

Is this a ST acquisition that provided some emergency back-up on the D Line or could he be a competitor for the NT position? He seems a little small at 288, but I would like to hear somone else’s thoughts.

I think he's one of those "versatile" guys....

can line up at DT in a 4-3, DE in a 3-4, and play ST

by SlowWhiteGuy on Mar 2, 2009 12:02 PM MST up reply actions

definitely and DE in the 3-4

but i want to see him blow someone up on ST. have you guys seen his work?

All indications from Colts fans

who have seen and loved him over the years, is that he should not be considered to be in the running for a starting spot at any position except on STs, where he is a standout.

I do hope that he is solid depth at the 3-4DE though.

Niko

was brought in to be a starter at arguably the most important position in a 4-3 D at a lot higher price. The risk was very high. Reid is a inexpensive versatile back-up DE and ST ace. I don’t think there’s a lot of risk in that.

Colts fans are not claiming he is a starter though. ;)

Too small for NT

He isn’t good at anchoring or double teams, either, so not a NT. He’s a slasher inside and very good at it, but he makes his mark on ST and it’s nce to see that they remember about that third of the game. Possibly a DE in a one gap line?

Derrick Ward?

Has anyone heard anything about the outcome of his visit?

by chopperpilot on Mar 2, 2009 1:14 PM MST reply actions

I read that Ward is still in Denver and they are still talking

by BGBronco on Mar 2, 2009 2:29 PM MST up reply actions

Where did you read this?

That would be very nice, if we could get him cheap. He ran for 1,000 yards as a backup, and we haven’t had a 1,000 yarder since Tater Bell. We need a dominant back (Hillis can destroy worlds at H-Back.)

I picked the wrong weekend to quit sniffing glue...

That article doesn't say

that he stayed in Denver longer than anticipated. It simply stated that they have been talking to him. I think you read too much into it.

Samari Rolle wants to be released

Should we go after him if Ravens let him go?

by BGBronco on Mar 2, 2009 1:48 PM MST reply actions

Where would we play him?

We already have Champ and just signed Dawkins, HIll, & Goodman.

Ward

If we sign Ward I don’t think we will see everyone’s favorite from last season touch the ball…Please Dont overpay Ward when we have a beast in Hillis and can spell him with Buckhalter…I don’t remember ever seeing a third back touch the ball in NE. It was all Maroney, and Faulk…Give Hillis a chance, I dont really think they are going too but I have to be optimistic with this one. Everyone in the NFL loved watching a back country white boy plow through every player that tried to tackle him…Buckhalter is going to make some huge plays for us! I hope Hillis gets the chance too.
