Horse Tracks 3/20/09

DP - According to sources, more than ten teams have contacted Denver to show interest in trading for Jay Cutler.
UPDATE 1:27PM EST - John Elway offers his take on the Cutler situation. Thanks to Isiddiqi for the heads-up!
PI - The defendant in the drug case Correll Buckhalther was implicated in took the stand in PA yesterday and denied selling drugs to Buckhalter.
BG - How aggressive were the Broncos in going after Matt Cassel? For what it's worth, Bill Belichick says they never offered a 1st- and 3rd-rounder. In fact, Belichick later says Denver never made a concrete offer at all.
DP - Klis has notes on Darrell Reid's versatility, Champ Bailey on Dre' Bly, Tony Scheffler working out with the Nuggets' trainer instead of the Broncos, and Pat White.
DP - Lindsay Jones writes a little bit about Andra Davis.
AP - Hmm, Josh McDaniels got a bunch of free agents to sign up for his squad thinking they were joining Jay Cutler and Company. Now how do they feel?
NFLN - TD and Wilcots talk about the State of the Broncos. They spend 4 minutes talking about You Know Who (with a nice sound byte from Neon Deion) and 1 minute talking about Denver's FA acquisitions.
BH - Randy Galloway asked a former Broncos coach, a DC, an HC and a pro personnel man about whether they'd trade Tony Romo for Jay Cutler. Sounds like a ridiculous article, but it's actually pretty good aside from the trade part. I'm serious.
Vandy - Jay Cutler's alma mater is wondering what happened to the guy they knew.
NFL - Former Broncos CB Karl Paymah has decided to join the Vikings. Minnesota also added receiver/kick returner Glenn Holt.
SI - Shannon Sharpe told Dan Patrick he thinks Chris Simms will be starting behind center for Denver in 2009.
PB - Eagles HC Andy Reid talks about the departure of Brian Dawkins.
KCS - The Chefs have released their long-snapper J.P. Darche.
Y! - Donte' Stallworth was reportedly drunk when he struck and killed a man with his car on Saturday morning.
NFL - The Bills have signed LB Pat Thomas, who had spent the past two seasons with the Chefs.
NFL - The Saints have released CB Mike McKenzie.
NFL - The Pats have signed veteran WR Joey Galloway.
NFL - The Browns added CB Corey Ivy.
ESPN - Meanwhile, DT Shaun Rogers has reportedly been absent for Cleveland's offseason workout program so far.
NFL - The Cards re-signed offensive lineman Elton Brown and signed TE Anthony Becht, who had been released by the Rams last week. Arizona added T.J. McCreight to their front office as director of pro personnel.
NYDN - Samari Rolle has a visit scheduled with his old DC Rex Ryan and the Jets, possibly as early as last night.
NFL - Gil Brandt was impressed by Matthew Stafford's pro-day workout. Here's what Mike Mayock and Steve Wyche had to say about Stafford on NFLN.
SI - Bucky Brooks likes the moves Seattle and Detroit have made so far this offseason.
NFL - Steve Wyche's latest mock draft has B.J. Raji falling to Denver.

Haven't always liked the showboating from D Sanders
But I do love his ability to cut right through an emotional, complex issue and get to the bottom line. “Why do they put a C on your jersey? Man up and lead your team.” Priceless. Right up there with “God told me not to pay you that much for my car repair.”

I hope Cutler gets wind
of what Belichick said about the alleged attempted trade. Belichick just put the kabosh on all reports that McDaniels was aggressively going after Cassells. I know it suddenly improves my opinion of McD.
Both sides need to kiss and make up now and return to matters at hand, such as playing football.

Of course we can trust everything belicheat says...
But I do still hope thinks get smoothed over

Doesn't matter
Jay says his biggest problem is the lying, not how aggressive McD pushed. It’ll take a lot more from McD than a Belichek quote to change the perception of dishonesty.

I would love for those comments to smooth things out
however I am not holding my breath. Actions speak louder than words so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

It seems the real news from the Buckhalter link is that the feds actually have wiretap evidence of his doing a deal with that guy…. While he probably won’t be in trouble with the law, the likelihood of him getting in trouble with Goodell just went way up.
This is getting to be a pretty big story in the Philly area.

But once this Cutler fiasco is cleared up, we’ll all be able to better focus on the stellar writing of my colleagues here.

Interesting that Sharpe
said the exact opposite two weeks ago. At that time he talked about the rift after Shanahan tried to trade him. But went on the say how he just went out and proved Shanahan wrong.
There’s way too much talk about the cutler stuff for as little as is actually going on.

DP quote:
An NFL source said “more than 10” teams have called the Broncos this week inquiring about Cutler.
In most instances, those teams communicated nothing more than interest should Cutler become available. The Broncos have listened but have told all comers their plan is not to trade Cutler.
Hmmm….sounds like the Broncos aren’t really entertaining offers.
"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

I wonder if the brain-trust at Dove Valley...
thinks that this interest is evidence that they might have something valuable in Jay Cutler. Maybe even something worth keeping, and working with.
Or maybe it’s just other teams trying to take advantage of the situation.

Excellent Finds as Usual NYC
my favorite line from today:
But while [maybe(my word there)]the Broncos have done very little right in this scenario, you’re helping them prove that they may not have been that wrong after all.
That is say what some here have said for a while

Deon?
First off, thanks for all the news, you provide a great service nyc…but
You liked Deon’s comment? I think the other 3 guys (including TD) made more sense when they explained how McDaniels has stripped Jay of his ability to lead this team. It’s hard to wear the C on your chest when you know the coach wants to replace you. One part of following somebody is knowing you can rely on them to provide stability. How can these guys get behind Jay when the bone-head coach already tried to dump him once, and has re-iterated that it could happen again at any time. It’s kind of hard to fall in line behind a lame-duck quarterback, and even harder to lead if you are the lame-duck quarterback. Deon has no credibility with me, and Jay is doing the smart thing by asking to go play somewhere that he won’t have his leadership undermined.
Since McDaniels created this mess, only HE can fix it. It’s going to take him dropping the hard-ass routine, give Jay a verbal commitment that he won’t be traded, and back it up with some type of contract extension. Seems like a lot to ask, but since McD created the problem, it will take some effort from HIM to fix it. If not, Jay is doing the right thing for his career by getting out now…unfortunately.

yeah, that perplexes me
that you could look at that video and beat the deon drum. the funniest part, as a matter of fact is when the other three were laughing about how deon would’ve handled it if he was in cutler’s shoes. thanks deon, time to go back in hiding for a few years.

Nice work NYC.
There are several links that I find very interesting ot read especially the one from Vandy.
The NFLN gave a good discussion on the state of the Broncos. They had a lot of good things to say on the defensive improvements that have been made along with bringing in Mike Nolan.
