Josh is a Mike, not a Wade
I happened to catch "John Elway: Forever Champion" on NFL Network today. It's an interesting show, especially since it takes place after we won the Superbowl against Green Bay, but before the 1998 season. A fun trip down memory lane.
One of the things that stuck out to me, was the period of the early 90s, or should I say, the drama of the coaching changes in the 90s and the effect on John Elway and the Broncos. First, Dan Reeves was fired and replaced by Wade Phillips. Wade was a highly successful defense coach. His goal at the time was to leave the offense alone and just work on fixing the defense.
If you remember those Wade years (and I try not to), we weren't a very good team. Elway and the offense put up great numbers and yet the defense let them down again and again. It was typified in the Monday Night loss to the Chiefs and Joe Montana. I still remember sitting in Pollock Joe's bar in Phoenix watching Elway pull off his 4th quarter magic only to see Montana return the favor (they highlighted this game on the show as well).
When Mike Shanahan was brought in to replace Wade, he changed the entire culture of the Broncos. He didn't just say that the offense was good and he was going to fix the defense, he kept the guys that were good, and added some of "his" guys like Ed McCaffrey. Why? The offense was good, it put a lot of points up on the board! Mike Shanahan had his system and fit what players he could into it, but also brought guys along that had already bought into it. He implemented the West Coast Offense, even though the previous 2 years had seen Elway and the offense's best statistical years.
He overhauled the defense in that time too, bringing in a lot of veterans from successful franchises to complement a good young core of players. That combination of players and system was the most successful the Denver Broncos Franchise has ever been.
Are any of you getting Deja Vu yet? Fast forward 10 years. It's not exactly the same, our offense can rack up the yards, but scoring has been a problem (2nd and 16th respectively). Our defense had more holes in it than Swiss cheese. People were calling for a defensive minded coach to fix the defense and leave the offense alone. Pat Bowlen had been down that road before, instead of going with a "Wade" he went with a "Mike." A guy that would come in and change the entire culture, not just be a Bates+defense.
With the hiring of Josh McDaniels, the Broncos are sitting on the edge of a new frontier, just like we were in the mid 1990s. Taking the coordinator of one of the league's highest powered offenses and turning over the entire team to make in his image. For the most part, McDaniels has left the offense intact, but is going to change the system (at least part of the system while retaining the ZBS). He has brought in veteran leadership on the defensive side of the ball to compliment a lot of young players who have talent, but lack playing time and attitude.
I really hope that Jay and Josh can sit down one on one when minicamp opens next month and work their differences out. We've got an amazing time coming up the next few seasons, I'm excited. Bring on the draft, bring on camp, bring on preseason, bring on the season!!!

It will probably take many this year and maybe a few years to overcome the loss of Shanny. I respect and understand that…. Love the Shanny! However, I think McD ushers in a new era in Denver that will, if given the chance, result in a return to glory.

Very nice.
It is very Deja Vu, and a very good comparison you make. Rec’d!

We got the best guy, and our team is going to be a force wfor the years to come!
Nice job Darin!

Good point...
I think its very similar, but Shannahan had the advantage of following Wade Phillips while McDaniels had to follow a legend. I think that’s the only huge mistake McDaniels has made in his approach. He stepped in assuming that his title immediately gave him swagger and respect, which is the same mistake almost everybody makes with their first taste of power.
I know this…I’ve been all over the place about how I feel about McDaniels, Cutler and all the drama. I’ve run the gamut from fire McDaniels immediately to trade Cutler for a box of balls. Right now, I have a growing respect and optimism for McDaniels— largely because he has refrained from fighting with Cutler in the press and has not made a reactionary move under intense pressure. I think he’s showing the willingness and moxie to think outside the box and that’s generally the trait of successful teams. He clearly has a vision he can communicate and sell, evidence by the aquisition of Brian Dawkins. That guy probably could have picked his team.
As for Cutler, its all too easy to forget that he is still very young and has probably been treated like a prodigy his entire life. He isn’t used to being ‘evaluated’ or spurned. I still have hope that he’ll work through all of this and still be a warrior for this franchise for years to come. I doubt that John Elway would have dealt with this anybetter after his third year than Cutler has. In fact, if somebody would teach Cutler the words ‘no comment’, almost all of the criticism he faces league wide would be absent. You wouldn’t have the Elway comparisons, the Rivers drama, or this.

Deja Vu
is hard. Change is never wanted except by those who are doing the changing. I have a lot of difficulty changing the attitude of people here because they are so set in their ways that even if it is wrong it’s right. Rec’d the post it is good I am excited

Good perspective on Bowlen's thinking
I hope Jay and Josh can sit down and work their differences out, but that’s assuming both want to. I’m not convinced Jay does, and I’m also concerned, if he agrees or if he’s forced to stay, if he’s going to be receptive to coaching. Lost in all the hullaballoo about how great he is or is going to be is how he finsihed the year when all he had to do was win one game to get into the playoffs. His QB rating the last three games was 74.3, 72.4, 74.9. Never mind what the defense did or didn’t do, when it came to what he could control he didn’t exactly rise to the occasion. Great QBs come up big when the stakes are high.

The salient point
in my mind is that this was a decision made by Pat Bowlen. As Guru once mentioned during a show, I believe, McDaniels is the instrument of change but Bowlen is the one who wielded it. Once Pat made the decision to hire not just for D but for O as well, profound changes were inevitable, across the board.
These changes come in the context of a completely new coaching construct, a paradigm shift. Some of the changes are painful or even baffling to us as fans because we’re so used to stability, which is very uncommon in today’s league. But ultimately, I am grateful to have a cautious yet decisive owner like Pat Bowlen, a man who cares only about winning championships for us. I think the hire of McDaniels may just turn out to be visionary — we won’t know that for awhile, but I’m willing to buy in for now. Pat has earned that from this fan.
