Horse Tracks 3/22/09

DP - Pat Bowlen doesn't want to undermine Josh McDaniels by getting involved with the Cutler situation. Interestingly, Cutler had sought a one-one-one meeting with Bowlen but ultimately would neither fly to Denver nor call Bowlen when he was scheduled to.
DP - Kiszla thinks Cutler should fire Bus Cook. You're a little late to the party Kiszla, but thanks for coming.
DP - Klis actually asked Roger Goodell if he would get involved in McJayGate. Good one, Mike... Meanwhile, other NFL coaches believe Cutler will stay in Denver. Also, if the Broncos open at home in 2009 it will likely again be part of a Monday Night Football doubleheader.
DP - Woody talks to Brian Griese about his career, his charity and Jay Cutler.
DP - Klis has some notes on the NFLPA, Domonique Foxworth, teams with draft-choice ammo to acquire Cutler, and the Broncos' compensation for Keary Colbert and Foxworth.
DP - Kiszla responds to some emails about You Know Who.
PFW - Pro Football Weekly is hearing that Tony Scheffler could be had for the right price. They also hear that McDaniels' decision to get rid of Mike Leach has not sat well in the locker room.
ST - The Star-Telegram catches up with quarterback Chris Simms.
PI - The drug dealer in PA was convicted on Friday in the case which implicated Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter.
ABJ - Brady Quinn says he's not sweating the rumors. Which rumors? Why these, of course (no, not the ones about which "team" he's on).
SPT - Would the Bucs have enough ammo to acquire Jay Cutler? One writer in Tampa doesn't believe so.
CT - Dan Pompei gives Bears fans a scouting report on Jay Cutler.
DFP - Drew Sharp tells Lions fans that the Broncos could be dumb enough to trade Cutler to Detroit.
TN - What about the Titans? David Climer says don't count them out of a possible Cutler trade.
ESPN - Pat Yasinskas thinks the Owner's Meetings are a ripe time for a Cutler trade.
NFL - The Lions will retire #93 for 2009 in honor of linebacker Corey Smith, one of the three boaters lost off the Florida Gulf Coast.
NFL - Charles Davis has B.J. Raji slipping to Denver in his latest mock. Meanwhile, Jamie Dukes foresees the Broncos selecting Brian Cushing. Pat Kirwan agrees.
Scout - USC QB Mark Sanchez will meet with the Jets, Jaguars and Redskins this week.

Morning NYC, and thanks for the links!
Well, hate to be the one to introduce a heaping teaspoon of reality to this hysteria, but Mr. Cutler is not yet the quarterback that Cook would have you or his misguided client believe.
This just in — Kisla has broken the Cook story!!! Now that’s journalism.
Styg owns the MSM. Nuff said. : )

And wow
Woody Paige writing a compassionate article about Brian Griese?
Last words I heard from Paige on Griese, literally, were, “Griese is gone—forget him.” He then went on to say the Broncos would be undefeated Super Bowl winners under Jake Plummer. Ya know, that’s why I love Woody: he’s a nutcase.
Nonetheless, it’s a nice article about Griese.

Good Morning nyc, Thanx again for Horse Tracts

Ironic
Jake Plummer and Brian Griese were two guys that I’ve always felt sorry for. I’ve met both of them, and they are both humble, nice, and down to earth guys. They both had, unfortunately, the most scrutinized job in Colorado, meaning that fans and media would eat them alive when they failed to perform on the field.
This is in stark contrast to Elway, who has a fairly well know reputation as a cocky a-hole of sorts. I know Elway has done some great off the field stuff for the community, but the reason he is so beloved is because of his on field talents.
It’s just sad how we judge athletes (esp QBs) as people primarily based on how good they are at their sport, not how they treat others in the real world. I really wish that we, as fans, could find it in ourselves to be able to separate the two better.
I was at a game shortly before Jake got replaced by Cutler. I couldn’t believe how many fans were booing him. Fans around me were saying some pretty terrible things about him as well. HE TOOK US TO THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PEOPLE!!!!
I guess the point of all of this is that we should remember that our athletes are people too, and we should treat them as we would want to be treated.

Jay and John
Both quarterbacks have both been labeled prima donna, petulent, whiney, selfish, etc., etc.,…
While these labels may fit at certain times, it is certainly not the truth in regards to the sum of either person. Jay Cutler’s work OFF the field through his foundation and giving of his time to visit diabetic children and his generous contributions to Open Door (a Denver based gang alternative program) speaks volumes. Add to this, the fact that he does not make a big issue about his charity work while allowing others to take more credit, and I believe that Jay Cutler is more than the labels that some people have slapped on him.
As for Elway, read this article from Guru. That tells me all I need to know about the man.
Certainly, both men have done things that make people wag their fingers and tsk tsk in their direction, but both men are ultimately human and prone to selfish moments. We all do things that, when taken apart from the whole, would make us look like a-holes. I’m certainly glad that most people I know, judge me for my life-time track record, rather than my few lapses in judgment.

from the Bowlen article
Dove Valley has been in a perpetual state of transition ever since. Shanahan had gained so much authority during his 14-year coaching era with the Broncos, he made unilateral decisions. Last year, Shanahan worked out a two-year contract extension with one of his assistant coaches. Nothing extraordinary there, except Bowlen wasn’t notified until later.
Intriguing, no?
Amnesty, the idea that you can forgive transgressions against you, gives as much to one side, as it does the other. It has the noble quality of bestowing mercy to both parties.

What about Mike Mayock's mock drafts?
Anybody seen anything from him for this year’s draft? I’ve seen his top prospects overall and at each position, but I haven’t seen any mocks from him for the ’09 draft.
If you watched his draft coverage last year, you may be as impressed as I am with his ability to forecast the draft. He was just about as perfect as humanly possible in his draft coverage for ’08.
If anyone can point me to a recent Mayock Mock, I’d be most thankful.

NYC thanks for your daily posts - keeping us up todate on the football world
Davus.X, I just checked NFL.com / Mike Mayock. His last post is the top 5 at each position. Last year he has 2 posts of Mock Drafts in April. I will be looking for them as well.
I see that Pat Kirwan is now saying that we may take Brian Cushing at #12 citing his versatility as a LB – that he could play anywhere with the same intensity of Bill Romanowski. I have to agree that he would be a great pick for us.
A couple of comments on Jake and Griese. I liked both of them. When Griese married a psychologist some time after his stint here, his game improved. I’ll bet that that would have helped him immensely as QB here. He needed to communicate with his receiving corp more.
Jake – I felt for him in 2006. I always liked him as our QB. He did much better here than in AZ. He did pretty well with what he had around him. We needed to put more points on the board in 2006 – but that also falls to the OC who replaced Kubes. And in 2006, the defense started to slide after an excellent beginning.
Thanks Blackknigh
I’ll definitely be looking for his draft opinions in April as well.
