Horse Tracks 3/23/09

Horsetracks_new_medium

DP - John Madden and Troy Aikman don't know what the big deal is. That's great...somebody want to tell Cutler that?

DP - The Broncos have worked out three defensive players ahead of the draft so far, and reportedly are putting their incumbent running backs on the block. Here comes the firestorm - Peyton Hillis is supposedly on the list. Awesome - just when our collective blood pressures were starting to fall...

IN - Update 8AM EST - Sam Adams went to Nashville in search of Jay Cutler...

ML - Thankfully, the Broncos aren't talking trade with anybody.

CR - The Canton Rep wonders if whiners can be winners. You'll never guess who that refers to...

NYDN - The Jets told the Broncos they'd be interested in trading for Jay Cutler. This follows up a previous Gary Myers story on Saturday in which he says the Jets must go after Cutler.

Star-divide

MH - The Raiders have acquired Dolphins center Samson Satele in exchange for an undisclosed draft choice. This, after the Dolphins signed Raiders free agent center Jake Grove to start in Miami.

Y! - Former Bronco and current Raider Cornell Green is facing charges of domestic violence.

ML - The Lions have already begun negotiations on a contract with their mystery man for the draft's first selection. KFFL is reporting that Baylor OT Jason Smith is the choice. Hmm, it's March 23rd - I'd take that last part with a grain of salt the size of Jupiter...

Y! - Don't expect any changes to the NFL's overtime rules this year.

ESPN - The Bears have agreed to terms with free-agent safety Glenn Earl. Agent mouthpiece extraordinaire Len Pasquarelli, "reports" that Earl brings "size and play-making ability" to the position (guy hasn't played in 2 years).

Thanks again, nyc!

I would have to say that I would be angrier if we traded Hillis than if we traded Cutler. Then again, it’s Mike Klis, so I’m not worried about it. He probably just overheard someone telling someone else about how they heard from someone that Josh McDaniels was trying to trade a Denver running back. I don’t care about Torain and Young, as they have never played three games in a row before.

Ummm...

Once again purely speculative, and nothing to say it is Hillis.
its funny, we are all up in arms when we hear Hillis will be a FB/ H Back type guy and not running back, yet when there are rumors of trading a RB, we think of Hillis, yet most of the conjecture says Denver is not looking at him as a RB….who knows, but I cant see anyone trading for Young or Torain…or really even Hillis…we are stoked on him but to the rest of the NFL he was a stop gap RB that got inured.

I totally agree Papigrande, if we trade Peyton Hillis I will flip out.

A decision to trade Hillis would really make me wonder what the hell is going on in Denver. He can play FB, HB, and catches the ball very well out of the backfield, which seems to be a priority for the new system. But we’ll have to wait and see.

by ThorpeBroncosfan on Mar 23, 2009 6:23 AM MDT reply actions

I don't see how

Trading Hillis would help the team. I hope this is BS.

by stedtfeld on Mar 23, 2009 6:39 AM MDT reply actions

I wouldn't get too worried

Think in numbers here: We have oodles of quality RBs. No superstars, but lots of guys with potential or known solid contributers. Odds are we don’t trade Hillis. He’s talented and young. It doesn’t make sense unless someone offers way too much for him.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

If Mcd likes versatile, athletic players, Hillis is his man. Hillis is going to be the Karl Mecklenburg of the Bronco Offense.

Mecklenburg? Who?

Oh, you must be referring to the lineman/linebacker who played every spot on the defensive front on his way to 3 First-Team All-Pro selections and six Pro Bowls. Sorry, I’d forgotten, since there have been so many Denver HOF snubs since Mecklenburg. As the list grows, it becomes harder to remember the names which came first…

Here's the real question....

what do you really get in return for any of them, even Hillis? A 5th round pick at best? Conditional pick? I’m all for trading Young, but I’d like to see what Torain and Hillis can do here.

Beware the wrath of a patient adversary.

There are so many expletives that are appropriate, but yet not appropriate at the very suggestion of that trade.

That boy has heart. He brought back the salute. And whether or not everyone wants him to the primary back, every fan loves that guy. I just love the way he wins every yard whether it’s running the ball in traffic or tip-toeing up the sideline after a catch…

It’s not gonna happen though… not gonna…

Do pre-emptive petitions have a place in the NFL?

Hillis

By all means trade Hillis. Maybe for a 6th rounder – that would be an upgrade! Sure, he’s a flat out stud with versatility but he’s not one of Josh’s guys. Besides, we don’ t need him because we now have Corell (one more toke and I’ll be over that line) Buckhalter. A poor man’s Travis Henry if I ever saw one…

Guys this cannot be legit… can it?

He doesnt cost much and what would we get for him? I 6th or 7th rounder? Are we crazy?

by gizmo213 on Mar 23, 2009 7:57 AM MDT reply actions

I can't see how we would be better

without Hillis in any way shape or form. He can run, block, catch, and lead. I was hoping they would keep Pinnock at FB, to keep Hillis out of that pure FB role. I also think he and Jordan would be a lethal duo late in games when you are trying run time off of the clock, or early when you want to loosen up the defense up a bit. Shoot, I was looking forward to watching him in whatever role he played on the field.

Everyone take a deep breath...

This is just another example of Mike Klis’s crap journalism. What does the article actually say:

Two NFL executives say the Broncos have been asking teams if they are interested in acquiring one of their running backs.

Then later Klis tells us:

The Broncos’ holdover running backs who can be had for trade: Selvin Young, Ryan Torain and Peyton Hillis.

Notice that there’s no source. Klis would be more journalisticly accurate to simple tell us those are the holdover RBs. We don’t know which, if any, of them are available for trade.

More irresponsible journalism from the DP. Accountability – what a joke!

I was referring to the Klis article above that everyone has been commenting on.

I meant that the article which says Hillis is on the block doesn’t actually have anything in it saying that Hillis is on the block.

Got it.

As a fan, I would hate to see Hillis go. What he did in his brief time was a blast to watch (a true power runner!)

But from a business / coaching standpoint, is Hillis beyond trading? I don’t think so. If we can get trade value for a player that has proven himself in a very limited time span, how bad is that? I know we as fans are quick to bond to players (a lot of folks simply love a certain, speedy RB who excelled in the pre-season but never played a down this year). I think Hillis is great. But the evidence is limited to a small set of games, and Denver would be reasonable if they did make a trade.

Of course, this is all useless rambling. As you point out, Hillis sounds safe.

Thank you NYC

you are unparalleled in your contributions.

I would be very sad to see Hillis go. Jordan is the same “Type” of back with about half the gas in the tank. Torain is also un proven. I think the only one who anyone would look at woudl be Selvin Young. His injury issues have made me believe he will be cut but if we could pick up a 7th rounder for him I am all for it!

I can't believe that Denver would look at trading Torain or Hillis

Bobby Turner needs to go slap around someone, why bring in some broken down RB, when you have some very talented, young ones in the stable. If they want to get rid of Young and Hall, so be it, but why give up on Torain and Hillis.

I understand this is a "business"

but I just get the impression this front office is viewing its roster as a portfolio of stocks and bonds. When does the people side of this enter in?

I don’t know . . . is it just me?

It is tough

But there is no need to get upset until you see a bone-headed trade actually happen. The business side of football is very important. We need to get better in MANY areas with our personnel. It makes a lot of sense to shop some of our RBs – even talented ones.

Now if a trade happens like the Leach trade then raise a fuss…as that was bone-headed and insensitive. But otherwise the FO has been solid so far this year IMNSHO.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

by sadaraine on Mar 23, 2009 11:40 AM MDT up reply actions

I think your mistake...

is in seeing this front office as different from any other front office. Ask Brian Greise or Jake Plummer what they thought of the previous front office. Recent actions are being viewed under a microscope as if they are somehow unique. Shanahan was almost legendary in the way he would dump players once they got in his doghouse. The only difference I see, is that the current front office seems to be making decisions based on rational thought and consideration (though we may sometimes disagree with their conclusions) while the previous regime was based on Shanahan’s emotional reaction to players.

BTW: There is no, read zero, evidence that the team is considering trading Hillis.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Mar 23, 2009 12:04 PM MDT up reply actions

And let's remember

that outside of McD, X, Bowlen, and the assistant coaches, no one really knows what this year’s O is going to look like or require to run as efficiently as possible. It’s hard to critique a decision at this point, since we don’t know what the plan is going to be.

I’ve heard the argument that they should be building the offense around the talent they have. While I agree that many of our best players should be retained and found some role, I disagree with the notion that we can do this for everyone. When Pat hired McD, it was a clear indicator that everything was subject to change. It’s a bold new world where the gilded laws of the previous universe may no longer apply. We can’t truly critique their moves for better or worse until we know exactly what they’re trying to do.

“You should never get in this kind of thing with your best player,” Madden said. “Maybe the player knows it, but is Cutler being a baby? I don’t know, but here’s your player. It’s a simple thing. Fix it.”
