MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #7

With the #7 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Oakland Raiders select....

DT, B.J. Raji, Boston College

Oakland Raiders

Round 1, Pick #7 overall

GM V. Money

Details of the pick after the jump...

Star-divide

DT or NT, Raji will be a load.

From GM V. Money:  Since there were no takers to my offers to trade down, the Raiders will more than happily cut their losses by picking the best player available. Okay, so technically, the best player available is probably Matt Stafford, but until the A-11 offense gets implemented in the NFL, giving JaMarcus Russell competition this high up is a tremendous waste of money. Luckily, their run defense is downright atrocious, and Raji has slipped down far enough in the draft to fall right into my board. In the end, it came down to B.J. and Everette Brown, but Raji is more talented and more ready to contribute right away. In retrospect, it is really a process of elimination.

*****

Commish's Thoughts:  I'm torn on this pick, but I certainly don't think the Raiders should be chasing after the OT leavings at this point.  A trade back made the most sense, and I know the phone lines were red-hot with deals trying to go through, but in the end, it looks like oakland karma caught up with V, which is always the danger of trying to pick for them.  Luckily V's free consolation prizes, including soap and barf-bags, should get him through this tough time...

ON THE CLOCK

The Jacksonville Jaguars are up next.  Things are starting to get very interesting, with most of the sure top five guys off the board.  Deliberations should be intense, and trade talks should be heating up.

The deadline for this pick is Noon MST, March 25th.  As long as I receive the pick by that time it will be valid.  To send me the pick, just email me at the address shown in my profile.

Yeah, but . . .

. . . theoretically, R. Clady can play left guard too.

true but Raji had experience playing DT

he and Brace lined up next to each other a bit in their 4-3 formations

I'm just bitter I guess.

He was going to be the perfect shock pick for me @10.

That would have been a shock

SF has a very good set of D- Lineman!

hmm I dunno

I mean they may not have a stud but who needs a stud NT when Patrick Willis is right behind them ready to kill the RB?

. . . you mean, as long as he doesn't get blocked, right?

Even Ray Lewis struggles without athletic fat men in front of him to eat up blockers and clog the lanes. Keep guards off P. Willis and you set him free to roam and pound people (#5o, anyone?)

So here is my thought (for what it is worth): With the coach SF has (him and his crazy eyes!), I have to believe they want to play D first, avoid turnovers and hand/ dump the ball to Gore. Rule #1 on a good defense? Do not let them run up the middle.

After you force them away from the middle, you can worry about everything else (i.e., don’t let them run wide, rush the passer, cover the receiver, etc) but you have to shut down the lanes tackle to tackle or you’ll never have a chance (see Broncos, Denver, years 2006 – 2008). Of all people, I think Singletary knows this and that’s why I can’t see him passing up on Raji if he’s there @10 (which I don’t think he will be).

Anyway, hardly matters now. Prepare for a boring pick at #10 . . .

and as fast off the snap as nearly any DE. He’s a very good fit at NT, and the primary reason that they let Ron Fields go to us.

Honestly

It is a solid pick. even if it is the raiders, if Raji is here I could see them swinging for him. The only problem I see is their Current list of DT’s. Warren and Kelly have A LOT of money tied up in them. Raji woudl command a lot of money as well, which would put a lot of money into 3 players at the same position. This could move Kelly outside again which might be good. a Line with Burgess, Warren, Raji and Kelly could be pretty stout but if they went 3-4 that woudl be hard

Doesn’t that mean this would make complete sense for the Raiders at this point in the draft? I mean really….doesn’t it?

But they'll be expecting us to expect them to not make sense

so to throw us off, they will make sense. In short, not making sense has BECOME making sense, so to not make sense anymore, the raiders will have to revert to not making sense for the sense that not making sense is now common sense.

I get the sense

that for all of Evil Al’s tinfoil hats and conspiracy theories, the implications of this are lost on him. I can’t see it making sense to him that we would get the sense that he would not make sense for the sake of us expecting him to make sense, as this would not make any sense.

However, if what you say is true, then Al could do anything and it would either all make complete sense or nothing would make any sense. Does that make sense?

they are approximately 721.193 miles from breaking ground in China. The scientific community collectively holds its breath as it struggles to discern the implications of this.

I suppose I should, ah, "leak" this to Jay Cutler real quick...

The Broncos GM reportedly tried to trade Cutler to the Browns during the draft. The deal fell through at the last minute due to the NFL Commish(styg) denying the use of a first rounder pick from the 2010 draft. Bus Cook is having a conniption right now and Cutler is interviewing on Opera right now about the “situation”. The feeling is that “Cutler is our quarterback” and always will be.

On a side note, what is up with your polls lately styg! I liked this pick for Oakland…I just didn’t know which one was good and which was bad so I voted for the third one. lol

Re: polls

I’m just having some fun. :) Not that it would make a difference, because I SUCK at making poll questions and answers. Is it SO hard to just make the answers “yes” and “no”?? Obviously, for me, it is.

I really could see the Raiders doing this

I think Davis may want to screw the Broncos and Chargers (likely guys to pick Raji) versus letting him go, I also could see Maclin going here, and if there is a good LT.

No real obvious pick here (I’m not a big Maclin fan) so Raji isn’t a bad choice.

I don't like the pick

but then again it has been years since they’ve drafted or ran their organization with any sense of logic…so good job!

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
