Underrated/Overrated (March)
Of course, these topics and their standing on an overrated or underrated list are just my opinion on a handful of recent observations in the past month.
| Underrated | Overrated |
| Renaldo Hill | McNicknames |
| Local CBS station's relationship with Cutler | John Clayton |
| Chris Simms | ESPN's market share |
| Jay Cutler's upside | Ryan Torain's chances of ever starting |
| The impact of Brian Dawkins on the team psyche | The level of tenacity with which Denver persued Matt Cassel |
| Pioli and McDaniels' respect for Matt Cassel | The Lions' new logo |
| Bowlen's level of involvement in the Cutler saga | Bus Cook's credibility to QB's entering the NFL |
| McDaniels' intellect and ability to speak with precision | Denver's red zone offense since Terrell Davis |
| Eddie Royal | The chance that Casey Wiegmann plays at 2008 level |
| The chance of a draft day trade not involving Cutler | The chance of a draft day trade involving Cutler |
| Ryan Clady…still | Brandon Marshall's hands (since the nerve damage) |
| Scott Pioli | NFC East |
| Coordinators and position coaches | McDaniels' inexperience |
| Shanny's ability to mask talent gaps with X's & O's | Denver's 2008 offense |
| Number of players who 'quit on the team' last year | Jay Cutler's "attitude problem" |
| How ugly the organization got during 2008's final 3 weeks | Chris Berman |
|
Impact of the new DirecTV/NFL deal |
The impact of a cap free year in 2010 |
Thoughts?
What did I leave off of this list?

Love the post, Super
It’s almost too much to absorb – maybe you should make this a bi-weekly post? I’ll personally address what jumps out at me…
Personally, I agree with all of your overrated list – maybe I’m just a pessimist. Or a realist. Whether Bus Cook’s cred is down, well what the QBs may see is that he fights for his clients and is willing to make a complete fool of himself to make them happy…
As for your underrated list…I think it’s a little early to be calling Hill and Simms underrated. I’d love to think they will be great additions, but keep in mind that Simms hasn’t played in a very long time, and he was merely adequate even when he actually was playing.
I think we’re all excited for BDawk’s impact on the defense, and even more so in a sense of attitude and psyche than anything else. But the reality is that if the line can’t get pressure and the backers can’t tackle, BDawk’s great attitude won’t really mean that much.
Your Shanny point is great – I think if someone else was coaching last year, the Broncos would’ve won 6 games.
Again, love the post – Rec’d

I missed the uncapped year one – I agree with SWG. It’s a BIG deal

I agree, its a big deal
I just feel like its not an earth shattering topic right now and I feel like some of the owners love the idea.
The topic certainly deserves MUCH more coverage here at MHR, I feel like ther’s a bit of a learning curve for most fans on what the uncapped year really means and what it doesn’t mean…looking forward to reading your post SWG!!!!

Great Post with one exception
I think the uncapped year will have profound impacts, just not in the way most fans are thinking. I’m planning a post on this topic in the next day or so.

great points
I’d love to hear more, but it seems like (for the short term) that the owners feel prepared for it
by super7 on Mar 24, 2009 10:55 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Please post on that SWG
I have no idea what it means or what impact it will have. Are the Broncos prepared? Is there a way to prepare? A post would be greatly appreciated. Hook a brutha up.
Do not trade Jay Cutler!!!

I think the impact of the uncapped year is overrated in one sense
It is just not gonna happen. But if it does, it marks the beginning of the end of the NFL as we know it.
by MattR on Mar 24, 2009 2:31 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why do you think it isn't going to happen?
The owners seem to be preparing for it. And the players don’t seem to be willing to back away from it either. I think the players may (falsly) believe it will be a bonanza for them while the owners may be looking at it as an opportunity to whipe their books clean of a lot of old salaray cap baggage, sort of a reset on the cap. That may be partcularly attractive to the cap over cash teams.
by SlowWhiteGuy on Mar 24, 2009 2:38 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Both sides may be talking trash
That is just them taking a strong stance publically before negotiations begin. Both sides want the other to believce that they are prepared for a cap-less world. But I think both sides realize the cap was the key to the unbelievable growth of the NFL over the past 15 years. I think they also realize that it is not something that can be replaced once it is gone so they will do everything they can to hammer out some kind of agreement before the 2010 season begins
PS. I would guess the players would probably agree to some sort of cap reset if the owners wanted it since it should open up more cap space for new contracts.
by MattR on Mar 24, 2009 3:09 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I see your point
but it seems like both sides have a vested interest in allowing the uncapped year to happen as long as a new CBA is put into place before the end of the 2010 season. Everyone seems to be protesting that they don’t want to see the uncapped year happen, then acting exactly the opposite.
And I don’t think the 2010 uncapped year scenario is that disruptive to the league with all the safegards the CBA places. An uncapped 2011 would be a completely different matter.
by SlowWhiteGuy on Mar 24, 2009 3:16 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Having made the comment about tough talk
The one thing I do firmly believe is that if 2010 is uncapped, it will be somewhere between hard and impossible to reinstitute the cap. The only way I could see that working out easily is if they have the framework for the new CBA in place before the 2010 season begins but are waiting to evaluate the economic recovery before finalizing a few details.
I actually think this is the biggst story of the offseason (coupled with the vote for a new head of the NFLPA), but it has gotten lost in the Cutler noise.
by MattR on Mar 24, 2009 3:28 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
My God.
I pray the NFL doesn’t lose the cap. The cap and free agency have done a lot to make the NFL great (in my opinion).

great post -2
Cutler’s upside is way overrated. People believe he s the second coming of Elway. Potential is just another way of saying he hasn’t done it yet.
Uncapped year is not over rated It could radically change the landscape of football and possibly lead to a strike.
Everything else is spot on. Great post +1

makes sense.
he became overrated at the start and has now worked his way to underrated. I would agree. I keep having to remind myself that he is a great talent and can become a great QB. I hope t is with the Broncos
by D-fence on Mar 24, 2009 11:26 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe its a bit early on Hill and Simms
but I love how athletic Hill is. He’s not the physical enforcer (like Dawk) but he can move, has makeup speed, and is very unheralded because the Dolphins have been so under the radar.
Simms isn’t a franchise QB, but if you would have asked me at this time last year if I would have rather had Cassel or Simms, I’d have take Simms in a heartbeat.
He looked great in 2005 and until he almost died in 2006, was a hot item in fantasy keeper leagues for his upside. Thanks to Gruden’s notoriously poor player relationship management, I think Simms’ career took a huge skid in the last few years.
Compare him to our backups since Kubiak was here? And now realize how lucky we are that neither Cutler nor Plummer really got hurt for along period of time. I mean, what if Jay broke his hand at New England last year and Denver had to use Pat Ramsey for the rest of the year. YIKES!!! Well, I guess we’d have a better draft pick!
by super7 on Mar 24, 2009 11:03 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Simms
I’m happy he’s in Denver, yes. He’s an upgrade over what we’ve had, well IMHO…
However, you cannot look at this via the lens of one year ago’s time – because this is now. Matt Cassel did more last year than Chris Simms has ever done and it counts.
Simms has a career QB rating of 71.2 – that’s not very good. Patrick Ramsey’s career rating? 74.9
Just remember, the grass is always greener…
by Douglas A. Lee on Mar 24, 2009 11:08 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay okay, I'm giving you that one, but...
I have to say that Pat Ramsey was so bad that every time he want back to pass, I was convinced he’d fumble, get sacked, or throw a pick. Didn’t we get to a point with him where Shanny wouldn’t let him pass between the hashmarks?
by super7 on Mar 24, 2009 11:11 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just a refresher...
Ramsey as a Bronco…
31 of 51 for 60.8% and 281 yards
1 TD, 1 INT
4 Sacks for 18 yards
3 Fumbles
Nothing spectacular, but for a backup QB? I think adequate.
by Douglas A. Lee on Mar 24, 2009 11:25 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know, its not as bad as I think it is but
The guy drops back to pass 55 times and on 8 of those plays something bad happened (4 TO’s, 4 sacks). Maybe you’re right, that’;s typical of a backup, but I’ll take SImms any day (not as a starter, BTW). At least until I realize he’s no different that Ramsey.
by super7 on Mar 24, 2009 11:29 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
for what it's worth...
I don’t think they lost every fumble. Yes, a fumble is never good, but he definitely didn’t turn it over 8 times…
by Douglas A. Lee on Mar 24, 2009 11:32 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ahh, gotcha.
I know you’re probably right on Ramsey, but I just felt like he wasn’t up to snuff. I loved the signing when we took him and he wasn’t so bad at first, but he just seemed, IMO, to get worse and worse.

He started becoming a character that most fans can’t identify with. Fans are smarter now and want more than he can give.
How many times does he need to evoke the name of Sammy Baugh? We get it, you’re a big fan. He’s become an out of place buffoon to me.

The NFL network and Sportscenter and shows like that report what they report because they want ratings. Without ratings, they don’t have jobs.
Think, who is buying this crap, because I’m not.
I agree, I read Lombardi (Mike not Vic) whenever possible. I listen to Schefter, but there’s no need to analyze the analysis, because most of its garbage.
Note to the MSM. Just because Jets fans will gorge themselves on CUtler trade innuendo doesn’t mean it’s news. Every team in the NFL wants that guy sans like 4 teams. Hell, the Yankees can use an ace, maybe he can pitch, maybe they should get involved.

No matter what McDaniels or Cutler do..
The “sharks” will find a way to make it more dramatic thatn it needs to be. No one in the saga is without blame, but when McD said that “I think this happens a lot more than people realize” or something to that extent, I couldn’t agree more.
This is just super public b/c JC is a QB for the Broncos and his agent is Bus Cook, snake-oil salesman.
Because sports news is so pervasive, we hear about this from every one every day, and trust me, after its over, its not going away either, but back in the 70’s and 80’s this might have come out after the fact and been an afterthought.
by super7 on Mar 24, 2009 11:46 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, I have something to add on this...
We as fans have to take responsibility for maniacally reading verey tidbit on this Cutler/McD thing. The reason ESPN and PFT and the MSM report what the do is because we’re there waiting for it like starved animals.
Look, if Cutler isn’t traded, there will be no news. Especially if there’s no new contract. So, realistically, what are we looking for?
We cannot let ourselves be the victim in this. If there’s something worth knowing, it’ll be front page stuff on the Denver Post. We’ll all know, but really, we have to dismiss the ‘sources’ and ‘someone close to the situation’ because the only thing that matters is is McD or Bowlen or Xanders or Cutler address the media at Dove Valley and announce a trade.
They aren’t gonna announce a non-trade. If anything, JC goes to training camp and as soon as McD can get his ear without Bus Cook around, he’ll do it and they’ll be playing slugbug in the back of Bowlen’s grocery getter in no time.
Don’t get all caught up in the media. Screw em.
