Broncos news not related to Jay Cutler; McDaniels discusses some football
Lost in the 30 minute long conversation that focused on the situation involving his starting quarterback, Josh McDaniels did spend some time talking about football items not related to Cutler. Here is a brief rundown --
McDaniels acknowledged that he is "concerned" that Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall could face a suspension from the NFL stemming from an arrest earlier this month after a physical dispute with his fiancée in Atlanta. Charges were dropped the next day.
Still, Marshall has had multiple domestic dispute issues in the past and he had a three-game NFL suspension whittled down to one game last summer.
McDaniels said Marshall is focusing on getting his life in order.
McDaniels said tight end Tony Scheffler can be a strong receiving option for him. There have been reports that Scheffler is on the trade market.
McDaniels said the team will use some 3-4 and 4-3 defensive alignments this season. He said how much 3-4 the team uses will depend on what it does during the rest of free agency and the draft.
McDaniels said the Broncos will use some of the old zone-blocking schemes as well as the running scheme he was used to in New England. The Patriots used gap blocking in which the guards often pulled out and blocked.
Although McDaniels said he prefers bigger offensive linemen than Denver has traditionally used, he believes the Denver offensive line will be perfect to use in the new scheme.
Like a breath of fresh April air, hearing McDaniels talk about football stuff is definitely refreshing. So please, feel free to discuss something other than you know what!

so
Jay Cultler sorry so used to it the last few weeks. ok Josh McDaniels knows a little about football. Man I thought we hired him for his soap opera skills.
Seriously, I am excited for our offense this year I am not gonna lie. Hell Zappa could get back there and throw the ball and we will still ROCK OUT!

There is no way Zappa should be throwing the rock!!!
That would mean he would on the trading block like everyone else. Neither Detroit nor Tampa Bay deserve a good guy like Zappa. However, if trading Zappa gets us Jeff Garcia to be our backup for a couple of years, then I will expect the Zapper to “take one for the team” :)
I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

At least now we know what our defense might throw out next year.
What I want the Broncos to do before the start of next season:
1) Improve the defense drastically.
2) Improve terms with Jay Cutler.
3) Talk Jay into firing Bus Cook as his agent.
4) Sign Torry Holt to a 1 year deal.
Let's go BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would just like a defensive coordinator that has heard of a blitz.
From The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language apparently it’s when a team “charges upon the quarterback by one or more of the linebackers or defensive backs when the ball is snapped. Also called red-dog.”
I say we give it a try.
"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

Larry Coyer was the last guy seen with one of those blitz thingies
Maybe we should ask him to return it? With the Colts’ DEs, he may not need it anymore.

Hmmm.....
Sounds like he can’t deny our O line is awesome but I wonder if this mean in the future he will look to slowly replace current guys with bigger o-linemen?

Our line is practically the same size and weight as the Pats line from 2008
The lighter/quicker mantra hasn’t been true for a few years now when applied to teh Broncos. Leaguewide, the average line weights are going down, while Denver’s is going up. It has been a very smooth transition, and frankly, i’m glad we have started getting stronger guys with more power in the lower body. Holland fit that mold, and Kuper fits it perfectly. Nalen was as successful as he was because he was as strong as an average guy who weighed about 30 pounds more. That is special.

Holland??
Mr oops I forgot to stop eating? didn’t we trade him to Dallas? Or did you mean Harris?
by SlowWhiteGuy on Mar 24, 2009 9:15 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I meant Holland
not as an ideal, but as a powerful guy. Our strongside running game inside the tackles was massively upgraded in 2007, but losing both centers killed the running game overall (not to mention a below average Lepsis).
Harris fits the strength mold, as does clady (though clady is just a stud in every category). Hamilton is a holdover, and wiegmann wasa nice shot int eh dark, but not an ideal target,

I really like to hear from McDaniels
I really think that Marshall can get his life in order, I think he already has quite a bit. Also, I really really hope we keep Scheffler, it’s good to know about what D we will be running, and If Cutler comes back, I think we can be a very dominant Offense

Hey Stet...
I am super impressed with BM.
No comments from him, he is in working and being a great team mate. The comments from Goodell seem encouraging.
Isn’t it nice when one of your biggest play makers, with a reputation for speaking out, is in getting it done and being a role model. Stoked.
Also, I am glad that Sheffler is back working. Obviosly, he spoke with the team, and they are not trading him. Jedi’s comments that Sheffler will be a threat in his system spoke volumes!

THANK YOU GURU!!!
It’s about time we got to some real conversation not having to do with you-know-what. I’m so starved for this stuff I want to rec this about 10,000 times.

Great post
That was like a breath of fresh air. Thanks Guru!!!
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

question
how are we going to run 2 kinds of run-blocking schemes successfully? versatility is a nice word, but you do what you do well, and you can’t do everything. sounds like a penalty/missed assignment waiting to happen. it appears to me the final frontier(the zb scheme) has now been breached, and the coach is going to be a square peg-round hole type. adapting to his players looks out to me, and this is not a rebuilding team, anymore. everything will be done according to scheme, and players will come and go who fit that scheme, even the o-line. as i pointed out a few times earlier, our new rb’s are not the traditional style for the zb. dennison and possibly turner seem to be around only for the conversion. i would hope for a full committment to either philosophy, but i am in favor of bigger /stronger players on offense if they are good enough. if that means abandoning the zb, so be it. power running, baby. but you can’t do both with limited personnel.
as for the 3-4, champ is wondering how we’re going to run that with our current personnel. the draft isn’t going to cure the front-7, if the new guys even hit on most of their picks. we are being made into the pats(without the proper talents to mimic them), and that may be a good or bad thing over time. but i don’t see how you could be successful with muliple schemes on both sides of the ball, with players that are mostly suited for one or the other, as we currently have. put another way, can we do everything well this season? can the players themselves? i doubt it, yet we are hearing from the coach that we are built to win right now. i’m a little confused here on the direction of our short-term plans.
speaking of plans, where is xanders? wasn’t the plan to have a check-and-balance situation here after the mastermind, too much responsibility, …? the coach has said he will be involved in play-calling on game days, too. seems like a bit much for a rookie hc to be taking on, and he has stated that no decision will be made regarding personnel that doesn’t go through him. bowlen can overrule apparently, but has he/will he? i would like to see personnel decisions(fa and draft) being made by someone other than the coach alone. isn’t that supposed to be the gm’s call, and just how involved is this guy? is the coach picking the draft? ultimately, it looks like a yes. he better be lucky his first time around. i’m not trying to be too negative here, and personally i like the coach’s fire, smarts, and dc! yes, defense! but what i’m seeing a pattern of is, maybe he has too much power too soon. and the problem i really have is that he is trying to win right now, and only his way, which appears to be all ways. as opposed to building and setting up a multiple-run sorta thing that most of us had thought/hoped we were headed for. we need impact players on the d-line, not a new team, staff, organization, and a bunch of schemes that worked on the best team in football, basically. just some food for thought as we go along for the ride. enjoy

NO zone blocking team, including the Broncos, zone blocks on every play.
In fact I have always wanted us to do more counters and traps. Other teams are so primed to defend the ZB that the tend to commit toward the play. That’s why bootlegs have been successful in the past. Just as a bootleg can be successful, so can a counter.
