MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #9
|
|
With the #9 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers select.... OLB, CLAY MATTHEWS, USC
|
Green Bay Packers Round 1, Pick #9 overall GM Broncosorbust
|
Details of the pick after the jump...
From GM Broncosorbust: Since 2 of the top offensive tackles are off the board and Raji is gone also, I had to try and improve what was a dismal pass rush last year.
Matthew is 6’3 240 lbs, so he has perfect size to play and strong side linebacker and make opposing quaterbacks a little less comfortable in the pocket. Hes not quite as fast as Curry running about a 4.67 40 but he makes up for it in size and strength and has proven to be a durable player.
*****
Commish's Thoughts: I am fascinated by Matthews going in the first round, let alone in the top ten. Is it the pedigree? Is it the work ethic? Only the GM can say, but it is interesting to think that a franchise steeped in tradition would go to that well to improve, and there are legitimate concerns for overlooking Cushing. All in all a surprising pick, with the potential to turn this draft on its head.

ON THE CLOCK SanFrancisco 49ers are up next. Still lots of stellar talent on the board,a nd the niners could go lots of different ways. Will both top QBs go in the top ten? Will Maualuga, Moreno and Malcolm all make it to Denver's pick? Stay tuned, this mock is just getting started! The deadline for this pick is Midnight MST, March 26th. As long as I receive the pick by that time it will be valid. To send me the pick, just email me at the address shown in my profile. |

Little confused here
Why not look at a DE? I really think this is way too high for a 1 year starter and the looks of a work out wonder, can we say Mike Mamula.

Strange . . .
. . . but then again I laughed at the Mayo pick last year.
The one thing you can say about Mathews is that he has the bloodlines. If he had 1/2 the longevity of his Pops, he’ll be well worth the pick.

I agree on the blood lines, but if that was the case then Griese and Simms would be starters
I just am wary of one year starters

While I agree
its hard to knock who beat Mattews out the last few years. Rivers is a great LB. Honestly there were those, who I was among. that believed that it should have been Matthews and River Outside and Mattews and pick your poison on the inside! The problem was that with 600,000 All-American Linebackers it is hard to say who starts and who doesn’t. Matthews will probably be picked in the first round (not this high is my guess) and will be a solid contributor if given a proper Role. One thing about Draft picks is you have to play to their strengths to start with as you teach them the rest of the game. Exceptions like Clady Royal Mayo etc. are rare because they already have enough of the game under their belt to excel. Example from our team last year was playing a man CB like Jack Williams in a zone AS he was learning it. He had to slow the game down a little and learn the way he was supposed to play instead of what came naturally. It’s kind of like in Sandlot “you’re killin’ me smalls!” you cant expect the new kid to be the Best player on the team!

There's Always One.
Last year it was the Jags trading up to #8 to snag Derrick Harvey, the year before it was Ted Ginn Jr. going 9th to the Dolphins with a need at QB and Quinn on the board, the one before that it was Donte Whitner to the Bill at 8… I think this curveball adds some realism to our mock that is often lacking in the far too formulaic versions out there. This is why we do this as a group instead of keeping to ourselves and individual mocks. As for the pick, I think it’s fine. I’d go Tyson Jackson there for the Packers, but whatevs. Should make for an interesting few picks following that…

Hey not bad
i like me a curveball but I have to ask the same question as the commish why not cushing?
That said I thikn this makes it harder for some other teams. Denver now has some big prospects on the board I am sure they didnt plan on having there

I love this pick....
If Raji or Brown are off the board, I would prefer Matthews over Cushing and Maualuga. He is much more than a one year wonder or a workout warrior. This guy beat out an All-American to become a starter. He is a late bloomer who has big-time sack. He doesn’t have the injury concerns of Cushing, and has much more versatility and brains than Maualuga. I admit it. I have a mancrush on him.

O.K. I know yall think im crazy but here is my reasoning
First of all let me say that I really wanted Raji bad but Oakland beat me to it. I realize he only started 1 year at USC but he did play 05, 06, and 07 and not only did he show incredible versatility(special teams, defensive end, linebacker) but he also showed alot of savvy and instinct for geting to the ball. The Packers were in the bottom 25% of sacks last year and that wont cut it if you want to make the playoffs. With Matthews speed and ability he should turn into a great outside rush linebacker and thats just what the pack needs. Also, due to his versatility, he will make an excellent special teams player and can play a stand up end in certain situations. To me this makes him very much worth the money for the ninth round pick.
I certainly thought about Cushing and I think he will be a great player, but I think he will be better playing in a inside linebacker position and I dont think he is versitile enough to play special teams or cover running backs effectively in pass coverage.
As for a defensive end the pack just resigned 2 they already had so the depth in that position is fine.

excellent defense of your pick
I can definitely see what you are thinking here.

Oh and 1 other thing
I think he has proven he has a better chance at staying healthy for a full season than some of the other picks.
Anyway thanks everyone for the feedback I appreciate you spending the time to do that.

Thank you Styg
I think the consenus is that im daffy though. Oh well maybe I can get a job with Al Davis lol.

I'll admit
I voted “Daffy” based on initial reaction, but the more I thought about it, the more the pick really made sense to me. I agree completely with ejruiz above with his mentioning of the goofy picks of the past few years and how this fits that mold. With the Packers moving to the 3-4, they obviously are going to be targeting these types of guys, especially with all of the misfits they have from the previous defensive regime. While some people can hoot and holler all about about Cushing/Jackson, I think at the end of the day I’d go with Matthews just because you know he’s going to bust his ass with every last breath he has to give. Of course, I’m biased. I’d fill my entire football team with less talented, extremely hard worker types.

I heard on the NFL network yesterday !
They had the Houston Texans on the clock with a mock draft . someone said they
would be all over this guy come draft day .
Also they said that his dad former all pro OL Bruce Matthews was going to be hired
to join the Texans staff soon .

Sweet
This is why its a mock draft…I guarantee there’s some picks just like this during the real draft where all of us are like WTF?!?!?! But who knows this guy has the same opportunity as every other linebacker being drafted. To be a rookie in the NFL, to work his ass off and to prove his worth…I like the pick because I like the fact this guy is a HARD worker. And I think he’ll do good if not great things in the NFL. Good pick!

One thing is for sure...
At least one of Maualuga, Moreno, Malcom, and Everette Brown will be available.
However, I doubt that he slips past the Buffalo Bills, and at this point, is a steal wherever he goes.
by V. Money on Mar 26, 2009 7:39 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Exactly.....
Now, I have seen the word “Workout Warrior” being bandied about by fans and media, in particular with regards to Cushing, and now, Matthews.
Want to see a real work out warrior, see Vernon Gholston. He has consistently gone missing in games his ENTIRE carreer.
On the other hand, anyone that has consistently watched USC and PAC 10 over the years knows this is far from the truth with regards to any of USC LB’s. They are all 100% high motor guys, and just because Cushing and Matthews in particular increased their value in the combine, does not make them work out warriors…..it just makes them more complete pacjages.
These guys are players, and I would be stoked with any of them.
I think Green bay is more likely to go after Cushing than Matthews, but Matthews stock is rocketing, probably harming Rey more than anyone as far as USC backers staying in the news.
Great post, and what a great series this is.
Kudos to everyone!

Actually...
At least two of Maualuga, Moreno, Malcom, and Everette Brown will be available on the board.
If Brown is still available, he gives Josh McDaniels the pass-rushing outside linebacker he needs to implement the 3-4 defense he brought over from New England.

No way do you take him over Cushing
I just don’t see it…I understand your reasoning, but it doesn’t jive for me at all. Cushing is more complete.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Cushing.
Aren’t there questions about his character and durability?
by ejruiz on Mar 26, 2009 12:09 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
That have just started
Cushing has been a fairly high character guy. The steroid knock is bogus imo but I could be wrong, and his durability was never in question AT USC.

I didnt have issues with cushings character when I made the pick
I do however have some issues with his durability but that also was not a decideing factor in my pick. What I looked at more was the largest hole that the packers needed to fill and what role he would play on the overall team. For me the selling point on Matthews took place when I was watching some film on him and saw an ability to not only play several positions but to play them at a high effeciency. The guy can be all over the feild and has an uncanny ability to locate and get to the ball in a hurry. I watched as this guy played special teams, LB, and DE and saw a guy who proved he could make big time plays in any of those roles. He made interceptions, blocked punts, got to the QB, and made alot of tackles for loss and he is exactually what I believe the packers need to got to the next level. I know one thing no matter where this guy gets picked ill be watching his play very closely.
