MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #11
|
|
With the #11 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Buffalo Bills select.... TE, BRANDON PETTIGREW, OKLAHOMA ST.
|
Buffalo Bills Round 1, Pick #11 overall GM Rep56
|
Details of the pick after the jump...
From GM Rep56: With the addition of T.O., the Bills have great targets outside, and having a great TE would add a key piece to this offense. Pettigrew (6-5; 257) is widely regarded as this year's top rookie pass catching TE prospect. Although he can not stretch the field vertically, he provides an outstanding outlet receiver. Pettigrew is also an excellent blocker, which will help out the running game.
The Bills are in great need for a defensive end that can bring some heat on the QB, but with Brown and Orakpo off the board, Jackson (more of a run stopper than a dangerous pass rusher) and Maybin (undersized, most likely a OLB in a 3-4) are not great fits for Buffalo's defensive scheme, landing a talent like Pettigrew is hard to pass up
*****
Commish's Thoughts: I love this pick. Why target a WR or Olineman with this pick when you can get the best of both worlds? It would be difficult for Buffalo to prioritize a deep threat when the QB isn't consistently getting the protection he needs, so this becomes that vital stepping stone which at once buys time for the QB, and creates playmaking options when the pocket gets solidified. Pettigrew may be considered a reach, being taken just on the outside of the top ten, but every year the top TE in the class goes "a little early". Bah humbug. If he can block, and if he can catch, draft him wherever you want to.

Hmm
I am not sold on this pick. It is nothign against you. You got in the right mind set addressing the need, I am just not Sure Pettigrew is a solid first rounder let alone a top 15 pick. I am not always right either in fact 6/10 times i am wrong. that said I wouldnt know whoto go after so I dont hate the pick! Good job

Pettigrew is a first rounder but...
end/bottom of 1st round. Let’s put it this way, I agree the Bills need a TE, and I think he’s one of the top 2 in the draft. But if they did go this way the consensus would be this would be a major reach. Even if it fills a need why pay high 1st round money for a bottom of 1st round guy. BUT you could still be on the right track, in other words, I could seriously see the Bills trading down, getting a low 1st round and another 2nd from someone.
The Bills are a real wild card here. But if I had to predict I’d see them taking better value here with a guy like Maybin or Ayers on defense.

Why not Maclin here? Just a thought
Granted the signed TO, but that was for one year, put Maclin in the slot and allow him to be a returner, Buffalo could have an explosive offense. Then when TO leaves, now you have an experienced and dangerouos Number 2.

T.O, Evans, Hardy, Parrish, Reed
Assuming these guys are all still on the team, sounds like a pretty deep WR core as is

So...
The Broncos pick is in?! I’m on pins and needles here with anticipation. I would have gone with Tyson Jackson considering how this mock has gone, but solid and realistic options abound. Look forward to the unveiling!

I like Pettigrew, but
would be shocked to see the Bills take him this high. That being said, all these picks are making the latter part of the round much more interesting. Guys I wouldn’t expect to be around make be sitting for me to draft later.

I didn't expect it . . .
. . . but I like it!
Maybe a little early but it’s too hard to trade down in this format and it does fill a huge need.
Nice job.

As The Eagles GM...
I absolutely hate this pick! [I’m kidding, because I was hoping for this kid later in the first round].

Hmm… I like me some Pettigrew, but it’s a virtual certainty at this point that the Bills will be going with a front seven defender. I’d put my money on Clay Matthews right now.

(And yes, I saw he was gone – in this particular scenario, they’d probably draft Aaron Maybin.)

I have it from a source close to the team and friendly to Rumblings that Buffalo’s coaching staff prefers Matthews to his two USC teammates.
Maybin is easily the most athletically gifted end available this year, and Buffalo absolutely craves speed at the end position. The Bills run a Cover-2 base scheme, which puts a much higher premium on speed than size at the end position, so Maybin’s bulk issues aren’t as applicable to our team than they would be to traditional 4-3 teams. He’s got great burst, and he can contribute situationally while we polish him up into an every-down player. His work ethic is outstanding, too.

Thank you sir!
I like Matthews a lot too. I think as it goes personally you have Cushing Matthews and then Rey as far as it goes but that’s me and how I put them up! Good to know that Maybin would be a smart pick for you guys. So Draft Day do you see yourself going Maybin or Matthews if both are available?

I originally thought "really?"
but then the more I thought about it, the better this pick is. After all, there’s no pass rushers left worth the pick (you could argue michael Johnson though) and they no longer have Robert Royal. Good pick.
