MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #12

With the #12 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Denver Broncos select....

OLB, BRIAN CUSHING, USC

Denver Broncos

Round 1, Pick #12 overall

GM broncofan91

Details of the pick after the jump...

Star-divide

Playmaker, but will he make it onto the field?

From GM broncofan91:

At 6'3" 243 lbs, Brian Cushing has great size for a 3-4 linebacker. Mcdaniels' key word when talking about what he looks
for in a player is versatility. Cushing has the skill to play inside, outside or as a rush end. He's a ferocious
hitter with a nose for the ball and he knows how to wrap up for a sure tackle. Cushing also has the ability to
effectiveley drop back into coverage and is great in run support. There have been issues regarding his durability
however he finished the 2008season without missing a single game so my hope is that those issues are now behind him.
There are also rumors that he uses performance enhancers but until he tests positive(which he never has)these rumors
do not concern me.

Commish's Thoughts:  Let the debate begin.  Is this a safe pick?  Does it do the best job of addressing need?  I personally think we are talking about high risk/high upside with this pick, and it would make for some exciting Sundays in 2009.

This was the big one, Bronconation... What do you think?
Two thumbs up. Cushing is a playmaker and the risk factor has been blown out of proportion.

One thumb up. It is a good pick, but there is some risk. If he doesn't get injured or get in trouble with the league, this pick will be awesome.
187 votes
One thumb down. Cushing is ok, and helps address a need, but there were some more attractive options out there.
216 votes
Two thumbs down. Too risky, and there was a much better option still on the board.

Wow

dreams can come true. I am curious why Cushing over others though. like why Cush over Rey? There is a lot of talent on the board so I am curious is all. That said LOVE THE PICK he would be who I choose!

I love Rey but....

he has issues wraping up and he tends to overpursuit. You can blame Webster for the pick.

Concur!

If this actually happens I will love the pick, if we pick jenkins I will love the pick if we pick rey rey I will love the pick…Its just a matter of the player panning out. I like this pick, I think Cushing will be better than Matthews…He’s fast, he’s strong, he seems to be pretty intelligent, as far as in interviews go…He had some injury issues but was healthy last year…With this pick our Defense would definitely start to show its shape…With that said we should have a Stable of Linebackers with all the conversations and such going on…Cant argue with competition! Let the best man play! WW!!!!

I love Cushing, BUT

This is a bad pick, as much as I hate to say it. I don’t care how good a linebacker is, he is nothing without good big men in front of him. That being said, the pick should have been Tyson Jackson, DE from LSU. I’m still holding out hope that Raji will be there, but a first day that nets us Tyson Jackson and Ron Brace out of Boston College would be absolutely fantastic.

Our LB’s can be addressed in the third or fourth rounds, where we can get a guy like Lawrence Sidbury from Richmond. I wouldn’t complain if we got Cushing, but this pick needs to be a big guy. Bigger than 250.

by Sayre Bedinger on Mar 27, 2009 12:22 PM MDT reply actions

I am not sold On Raji

I still think he ends up like Haynesworth and plays for the PAY. Jackson is strong but with what we currently have I am sure we can find our need in DE in latter rounds. Also, the front seven as a whole is terrible. The final thought I have is that with the additions we have to pick Jackson and Brace in day one would tell our current incumbents (and newly acquired FA’s) that we have ZERO faith in their capability.

You Go BIG Early

As it has been proven in recent years, you don’t want to try and build your offensive and defensive lines in the “latter” rounds. Look how good our O-line got when we added a first and a third round pick to it. You can invest fourth round picks in players like Brandon Marshall, but elite defensive linemen are not a dime a dozen. Our linebacker group of Dumervil, Williams, Davis, Woodyard, Moss, Larsen, Bailey, Reid is very capable. Our defensive line right now would be Marcus Thomas, Ronny Fields, and Carlton Powell. You can get good LB’s in the later rounds, the same can’t usually be said for DT/DE’s.

by Sayre Bedinger on Mar 27, 2009 12:34 PM MDT up reply actions

I just cant see

spending a pick on Jackson. I mean there are some good Lineman out there and He is one of them but not at #12. I agree you go big but if you target Brace in #2 (which I would) then I don’t see the problem with Cushing. And Doom is a Hybrid, which means he will play a lot of rush and not a lot of coverage. I like Cush as a SSLB he has the ability to do it!

I'm not sold on any of the first round d-linemen.

Raji is a character risk, and Jackson has consistency issues and struggles with double teams. Also, first round d-linemen tend to bust more than most positions, and I would be afraid to tie up that much money in a guy that there is a small chance will be successful for us.

I seem to have lost my future self.

by papigrande on Mar 27, 2009 2:12 PM MDT up reply actions

OR...

Like any of the other tackle busts from the first round in the past 20 years…Seems like 1st round tackles just dont pan out for some reason…So I like Jackson here too. I heard something about him being soft, what do ya’ll know about that concern?

Versatility would seem to be the key here.

I think this one makes a lot of sense given who was off the board. I’m not 100% convinced about his ability to stay healthy, but it’s a rough game and players tend to get nicked up. We obviously need to upgrade the talent level of our LB corps and this would be a good step in that direction.

This also seems to be a pretty realistic pick as the steroid rumors totally fit a NE mold for LBs (only kidding — sort of).

Sorry, I like Cushing

But not at 12. If you go LB here it has to be Rey.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

I like this pick....

Contrary to what some people are saying…it is not dumb. Cushing is much more versatile than Rey and will be more valuable to our team. Of course Cushing juices, and by the way, most NFL players juice. If this is shocking to anyone, I’m sorry. I know this is not popular, but I would prefer Clay Matthews over Cushing. He is just as versatile, he is faster, he is just as strong, he is more intelligent, he has greater upside, better pass coverage etc. If we are going to go LB with #12, take Matthews.

I trust an opinion like yours better than the combine…I was knocking the combine not you…I said that because of how so many people grade the players based on their combine results. I didnt watch any of the games except a few nationally televised ones and I was just watching to watch…WW isnt a combine warrior but look how he plays football…You can just see how some players play the game, combine stats athletic stats dont mean anything. WOW!

by broncofan91 on Mar 27, 2009 1:34 PM MDT reply actions

McD.

If you’re going by what mcD has been saying, what really stands out in my mind is his desire for size up front on both sides of the ball. If raji’s not there, they’ll go with Tyson Jackson. I think he’s a middle of the first value, so it’s a small reach at #12 forgiving because our degree of need. Likewise, our first round pick will be coupled with the corresponding big man up front in the second round: either Ron Brace (if Jackson’s the pick) or Jarron Gilbert (if Raji’s the choice). I don’t hate Cushing, but I certainly don’t like him either. I get the pick and I don’t think it’s a bad one, it’s just not the one I would make and I hope it’s not the one the Broncos will make in real life.

by ejruiz on Mar 27, 2009 1:34 PM MDT reply actions

I thought about Jackson but most of the scouting reports that I read said that he was inconsistent and that he took plays off.

by broncofan91 on Mar 27, 2009 1:49 PM MDT up reply actions

Sorry Broncofan91, but

the Broncos have linebackers. Maybe not a group of Merrimans, but they do have a decent group.

Where they are sorely lacking is at DL. To me, it was either take a DT or, if it would have been a severe reach for #12, do everything I can to trade down. Maybe Cushing was the best you could do at that spot, but I still had to give you one thumb down.

Hope you still like me. (heh)

take your ritalin

actually, we do need to get together a good booby prize for the fantasy winner. I used to make a trophy out of bread and glue when I worked out on the boats. It was a piece of toast coated in this yellow glue that hardened to a brilliant shine… We called it the “Golden Toast” award, adn we gave it out once a season to any new guy who could stay standing upright for the whole season, and still manage to contribute. During the (rare) years when we didn’t have a greenhorn, it was a booby prize that we gave to whichever guy was in the worst shape at the end of the season. He was the “toasttest with the mostest!”

But back on topic, we need to make a fantasy trophy for next year…time she flies….

Don't like the pick

I work at USC and yes Cushings is versatile and a max effort player, I think he has reached his peak as an athlete and player. There are definitely rumors of juicing and also he has been accused of being lazy early on in his collegiate career. He seems to need a coach to constantly light a fire in him in order to get himself ready to play.
Rey is a much better pick. He is a natural athlete that hasn’t reached his full potential. He is an impact player that will bring a punch to his tackles. Yes, he doesn’t necessarily wrap up in his tackles at times but neither did Al Wilson but Al made the plays he needed and brought the hard hits with him.
With the 12th pick, I want an impact player. With the 24th pick, then it’s about versatility.

Don't think that this is a good pick

He may be a stud, but this defense does not need to get another OLB. If we do draft a LB in the first it needs to be Rey. He is a leader and a stud, a combination that we have not had since Wilson was let go. There is already a lot of options at the OLB spot, DJ, WW, and Bailey plus the hybird guys in Moss, Reed, and Doom. If we do not get Rey with this pick I would be a lot more happy with Jenkins or Jackson.
Jenkins is a very intriguing option in my book. He does not have to come in and play right away and can learn from the best corner in the league.
In the second we need to do whatever we can to get Brace. He has the size as Raji and a lot better work ethic.

Not a Broncos Fan but,

That was a Terrible pick, the Broncos deserve more then Cushing
Aaron Maybin is still on the board.
Cushing came to USC a safety (which is why he has that speed) but he’s been juicing it up since freshman year to get the physique he has now.
Luckily Broncosfan you’re not on the clock, BRONCOS NEED A REEL RUN STOPPER SO WHEN I PLAY MADDEN I’M NOT SAYING “Wow L.T/peterson/ chris johnson/ sporles/ willie parker /felix jones just scorched this Ah-fense agian!”

Moreno is too slow,

how about you draft Antone Smith from FSU
4.35 40 time
31 bench reps
and can catch the ball out of the backfield.

It’s all about the Bronco Madden team!!!

Oh please don't say that

I am not going to highjack the front page post and am a bit sorry I brought it up here in the first place but he isn’t slow, he is just a football player and not a track star. Moreno runs a 4.58 – 4.6 but he can run a 4.58-4.6 with pads on too. The other track guys running in tights don’t impress me.

I PSU fan me no like USC
USC is overrated
It seems if all USC players stocks have risen
really they only have one player worth looking at being Rey Maualuga
The projections of the rest are an effect from the Combine and/or Bowl Game

HAHAHA!

A PSU fan that hates USC… I wonder why that is??? Could it be because the Trojans were cruisin’ to a 31-7 win in the Rose Bowl before they took their foot off the gas and let you make it look a little better?

by ejruiz on Mar 28, 2009 2:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Not my pick, but I understand the reasoning

I agree that Cushing is more versatile, somewhat like DJ Williams, but I rather have a great football player over the great athlete, DJ is a fine player and I think Cushing is very similar, but both seem to lack that leadership ability, I rather have the bono fide leader in the middle in Rey, our defense truly lacks that. As much as Dawkins may bring leadership, I think we are fooling ourselves into thinking he will be here more than two years at the most, then that leaves us with a tremendous void (again), and Champ and DJ may not even be on the team at that point. I much rather have Larsen and Rey (fire and ice) in the middle, and put DJ and Woodyard on the outside, that would be a tremendouos LB corp with some solid young leaders for years to come.

As much as I like Rey

I just couldn’t shake off that feeling of deja vu(Nate Webster). Cushing’s coverage skills were also a big selling point.

by broncofan91 on Mar 28, 2009 1:20 AM MDT up reply actions

5.0 yards a pop

Broncos gave up 5 yards a carry last year, you don’t solve that with cover linebackers. Even if Cushing was a run stopper, He’s injury prone and most likely on the juice, as you stated before. Why take such a risk when the Broncos need as much help as they do on defense?
Rey Maualuga and Maybin both are better then Cushy and have less side effects to worry about.

Most likely you only picked Cushy because you saw his combine stats and heard Mel Kiper say cover linebacker, the choice makes no sense at all.

by supraman on Mar 28, 2009 1:45 AM MDT up reply actions

Mate, I could not disagree with you any more....

McDaniels wants players that bring many skill sets to the table….not one trick ponies. Nolan also has a tendency to mix his defenses up so you dont know where the pressure is coming from, using hybrid looks, 3-4, 4-3 etc.
Now, considerng all this, they are going to bring in with their 1st round a player that can be used in different looks, will be a game changer and who has a nose for the ball.
Cushing can play ILB, OLB, DE and the elephant role. The Broncos will keep a lot of LB’s on the roster so they can have as much versatility as possible.
Cushing brings high level play, passion, versatility and leadership to this team.
I watch USC all the time, and have to wonder if maybe, just maybe, you are down on him becuase he dominated you guys in the Rose Bowl and USC pretty much smashed you.
Thanks for coming to MHR and keep the comments coming.

2:26 – Awareness 0, everyone knew that was a run but Cushy
3:26 – Not sure why Cushy would rather tackle his own player rather then stop Rodgers
4:50 – Plays the run to far to the inside

P.S
Kevin Ellison who I believe is number #4 is the most underrated player on the USC defense, he’s a far smarter safety then Taylor Mays except he can be stolen in the 6th round.

RE: Kevin Ellison

I think i heard that scouts think he should move to LB? Back when I was watching him I never once noted that he was doing anything other than playing a solid downhill SS role, so I was surprised when I couldn’t find him listed under SS on a lot of draft sites. Instead they have him under LB. I noted the discrepancy in my paperwork, but I have yet to find a good confirmation that any NFL teams are looking to try him out as a LB….

Anybody heard anything?
