MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #13

With the #13 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Washington Redskins select....

DE/OLB AARON MAYBIN, PENN ST.

Washington Redskins

Round 1, Pick #13 overall

Details of the pick after the jump...

Star-divide

The most explosive player in the draft?

From The GM:  What a spot for the Redskins to be in.  The two positions that the Redskins probably have ranked highest on their board, OT and DE/OLB, got hit the hardest in the early goings of our MHR Mock.  And while Andre Smith (he of Combine shame) is available, and the Redskins could be expected to do wild, blood-pressure endangering moves on draftday, in the end I decided that the best option was to take the riskiest DE/OLB on the board in Aaron Maybin.  He is rough around the edges, and won't and much impact standing up with the Redskins' aging LBs, but when he gets an opportunity to put his hand in the dirt and explode off the line, he could be just the ticket for the Redskins' pretty-good-in-every-area-but-zero-passrush defense.  The knock against him is that he isn't strong enough to help against the rush, but some NFL teams feel that is selling him short (see Bills, Buffalo).  He has a terrific first step and did a phenomenal job in preparing for the Combine, increasing his strength and lean mass, which may mean he could realize his potential sooner than later.  I think the Redskins are just the type of team to take that chance, and if Maybin pans out, the Redskins defense could be intimidating, and quickly.

ON THE CLOCK

New Orleans Saints are up next.  Yet another team that could use an upgrade at OLB, they should be feeling the heat to reach, but will they?  Their elite offense doesn't really need any of the elite offensive weapons that are available and quickly becoming steals.    Guys like Malcom Jenkins and Vontae Davis fit a need and are in an acceptable valuepick category right now...

The deadline for this pick is NOON MST, March 30th.  As long as I receive the pick by that time it will be valid.  To send me the pick, just email me at the address shown in my profile.

Relentless

Broncos should of picked Maybin.
Instead the GM wanted Cushy.
Broncos fans will regret this decision for the next 6-8 years

Don't Feed The Trolls...

If you keep playing back at him, then he’ll keep popping up. From what I’ve seen, he hasn’t made an effort to pose intelligent discussion beyond Madden and his love/hate of PSU/USC.

Did you have to make this pick, styg?

I like the pick for Washington, though I definitely think this is the floor for Andre Smith in the draft and I’d be shocked if he fell further…

by ejruiz on Mar 29, 2009 2:59 PM MDT reply actions

Am I that transparent??

I didn’t know if the Redskins would prefer a RT over a LT, so I went with the rush-end, which also seems to suit their player-acquisition methodology. This is less about where Andre Smith might go, and more about just how controversial Maybin is. If Maybin didn’t get taken on Day one, it wouldn’t be anymore surprising than seeing someone take him in the top ten. Crazy.

Okay

had time to process the pick. It isnt too crazy but it is right down Synders alley. Could end up being pretty solid provided he doesnt want a 100 mil contract as well

Where is my snarky little poll?

Where I can tell the GM I want him to spend 4 weeks alone in the desert for his insolence? HEH, j/k. I like the pick, but I thought the Redskins would prefer an OT. I think Maybin is a bit of a reach at 13.

I seem to have lost my future self.

I consider myself immune to criticism!

I had a poll originally, but the options were redundant: “Awesome pick!” and “I don’t want to like the pick, but I have to.”

Why bother, you know? :)
