09 Depth Chart

Amidst all the distractions of the last few days, I believe that the 2009 Depth Chart is quickly forming whether we focus on it or not.  I personally have not and will not involve myself in the soap opera.  All I care about is Denver winning football games.  Until a deal is done or a suspension has been given, I don't freaking care!

I have put together what I believe to be the current depth chart and where I think the draft picks will go.  Unlike last year we have legitimate NFL starters at all of our Defensive positions except for one or two which we will fill through the draft.  We will have good depth too.  Our D is not only improved, but has the potential to be a top 9-12 Defense in the league.  Paired with our already GREAT Offense, I can't quit smiling.  Maybe I'm drinking to much Orange Kool-Aid, but I'm really excited.

Below the Depth Chart I put my "guesses" on who McD and X-Man will draft. I'm assuming we trade down with the Detroit Lions giving them our # 12 for their # 20 and # 33.  It might be a dream, but for now that's all we can do, right?

I would love to hear what the rest of MHR thinks, so please let us know.

Mmmm.

I thinks Buckhalter will be sharing time with hopefully Hillis.
Davis can tackle though and doesn’t over pursue which you can’t say for Webster or Winborn

Also, Paxton better not be a backup center

He is 260 lbs, he would get mudered playing every down

True

I really had no idea on the backups for O line.

Yep, dont agree with that...

Licktentigers and Hamilton would go in there before Paxton.

Davis is a good player and he will be in rotation...

So he may start season un til a young guy shines.

I disagree Zappa

Your unbridled optimism from last year must have infected me. Our offense will be marginally better than last year. They have another year together and I think McDaniels will do a better job of counterpunching and in game adjustments than Bates did. Our defense will be better than last year. At best it may be middle-of-the-pack but that is better than third from the worst in the entire NFL. Our ST will be slightly improved if for no other reason than the guys will be playing for roster slots that they may have felt more comfortable in keeping last year. Let’s see what happens in the draft.

I dont think they will.

Hillis will start.
Look for Jedi McD to go after Heath Evans at FB and we ill bring in another LB…hopefully Cushing and a guy like Brinkley late.

Good except Hillis should be # 1 RB, my opinion......

Also intersting you have Moss as a 2nd stringer

Not saying that it won’t happen but if that is the case, my guess is he will be off the team.

I'm not sure on that one either..

but he is still on the roster, so that’s what I’m going with. You neve know he could flourish in the new system.

by chopperpilot on Mar 3, 2009 4:25 PM MST up reply actions

It might make sense if he is transitioning in this system...

he should have been drfated as a 3-4 OLB anyway…he has basically had 2 years wasted playing in the wrong system, although playing DE in a 4-3 will help his pass rush. Lets hope he picks up the nuances of dropping into coverage.

idk about WW being on the inside

i know he isnt the prototypical lolb, but i think he could play there

I hate the MSM. saying cutler wants out is taking his statement completely out of context!

WW, BB, Dum, Moss are all

kind of tweeners though. I think we’ll find out more through workouts…

Doom

was double teamed a lot last year. I see him as a good Rush guy but the transition from dirt to knees will be interesting. I think he becomes the Jack but I dunno

by Jon Tollerud on Mar 3, 2009 4:42 PM MST up reply actions

Agreed

I think he is going to excell because he would have a back blocking him most the time instead of a LT. Big advantage for Doom.

by chopperpilot on Mar 3, 2009 4:45 PM MST up reply actions

Its hard

I have heard so many things.
First I dont See Boss Bailey on the List anywhere effective. Boss probably wont play ILB.

Here is my Defensive Take:

DE – Tim Crowder, Marcus Thomas, Ryan McBean, Draft Pick
DT- Ronnie Fields, Carlton Powell, Darrell Reid, Draft Pick
OLB- , Elvis Dumervil, Boss Bailey, Wesley Woodyard, Jarvis Moss
ILB- DJ Williams, Andra Davis, Spencer Larsen, Draft Pick
CB- Champ Bailey, Andre Goodman, Josh Bell, Jack Williams, Draft Pick
SAF- Brian Dawkins, Reynaldo Hill, Josh Barrett, Draft Pick

5 of nine Draft Pick on Defense would sound about right.

by Jon Tollerud on Mar 3, 2009 4:40 PM MST reply actions

I take it we are assuming a 3-4 defense…if that is the case I don’t think Reid can play NT, he was one of the Colts undersized 4-3 DTs, mostly a special teams ace, and I don’t think there is any way he can play 3-4 tackle, even as a backup.

I will be interested in Crowder. His first year was great, then he was gone. Can he play in the 3-4? I don’t know. There are certainly 3-4’s out there that have an end or two of his size; he will certainly be a curiosity.

by poorboywilly on Mar 3, 2009 7:17 PM MST up reply actions

I think

in looking to the Hybrid System Reid may get some time in NT. Could you Imagine McD/ Nolan creating such a cool Hybrid that it gets copied like 1-DL 5LB 5DB imagine if that worked ha ha

by Jon Tollerud on Mar 3, 2009 7:28 PM MST up reply actions

looks ok

the depth chart looks alright to me, though that defensive line is still a long way to scaring anybody. The only problems I see with it are at linebacker…….i would move williams to the rolb probably though he may play inside again. Boss and Woodyard on the other hand are definently not inside linebackers. Plus Moss would have to be a rush end behind Doom…..no way they have him change positions and then go to a linebacker spot that doesn’t rush the passer a large percentage of the time, he may be able to drop into coverage but i doubt it would be his strong suit by next year.

by drewshap on Mar 3, 2009 4:45 PM MST reply actions

I studied NE, Dallas, Pitt, and Balt defense and

the OLB averaged around 260 and the inside guys more around 245. So, I don’t know where else BB and WW would play.

Agreed on Moss.

by chopperpilot on Mar 3, 2009 4:48 PM MST up reply actions

HT has pointed out

That the scheme can be adjusted for any type of LB – coverage guys are lighter, and WW has played well on the edge. Boss is probably the starter at LOLB until he goes down hurt in the second game and we move on…Powell is a cypher, but not currently big enough to anchor at NT (that could change). He’s a decent DE in the 3-4, though – did well against double teams in college.
