Bowlen: 'The Broncos will trade Jay Cutler'

It appears McDaniels and Cutler will never get to work together after all

It appears McDaniels and Cutler will never get to work together after all

Many of us never thought it would come to this, or perhaps we chose to ignore the writing on the wall.  Whatever the case, the Denver Broncos will look into trading QB Jay Cutler.

Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen made the following statement earlier today -

“Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by Head Coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful. A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded.”

The writing was on the wall yesterday when Bowlen mentioned he had tried to contact Cutler only to be rebuffed.  It's one thing to ignore the Head Coach.  It is completely and uttlery classless and unprofessional to ignore the Owner, your boss, the guy who signs the paycheck.

Whoever is to blame, Josh McDaniels and the Broncos or Bus Cook / Jay Cutler, I cannot help but think the way Cutler and Cook have handled this has been nothing short of unacceptable.

Now we begin the who and where.  It may not seem like it now, but the Broncos will be better off.  All 53 guys in that locker room have to want to play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.  Your QB had better be the leader of that movement.  Jay Cutler was not and will now find himself somewhere else.

Stay tuned....

No looking back...

… I’ve come to accept this. I have been in awe of Jay’s talent. I’ve watched the guy warm up within feet of him and just… well it doesn’t matter now does it?

Here’s the deal: this is good for us. If you get past the whole Shanahan debacle and accept that McD is the guy then it’s easy to see why it’s better this happened now than later.

And this WOULD have happened later. It would have been under completely different circumstances but it would have happened.

At least now we can extract maximum value from the situation and move on. I thought Quinn played very well against us on MNF btw. My opinion. Whomever they get needs to have a quick release with those 4 WR sets.

it would have come to head at some point – especially if Jay struggles under the new system. The chatter would never stop.

This sucks!

Not only have I loved Jays ability but I have been hypeing him as the next great QB in the NFL to everyone I know for years. Now he is gone.
All I can say is that Mcadanials better win immediatly or he will be RUN out of Denver.
Also, please trade him to the NFC, I dont want to face him.

On the other hansm peace you little BABY!

Answer: about 3/4th of the teams in the NFL

Because they won’t try to trade him for a weak-armed 1 year wonder.

I am SO bitter (obvioulsy).

by Elway's Ghost on Mar 31, 2009 9:49 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

It’s not like Jay demanded a trade for no reason. A lot of teams would love having him.

by uziguzi on Mar 31, 2009 11:34 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really don't want to rehash this

but Jay has no reason to ask for a trade. That is if he is a man. Who knows. He could have been fooling all of us. I am glad he is going to take his PMS somewhere else.

by adamriggs on Apr 1, 2009 12:25 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Start the bidding...

At three 1’s. Or two 1’s and a star. The MSM will go crazy saying Denver has no leverage. But Cutler is under contract, and his cap number in 2009 is very low ($1.035 million). There will be plenty of teams interested. Denver will get their price.

by Douglas A. Lee on Mar 31, 2009 7:24 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed..

   this is the right move – we will be better off in the long run. We could end up with 4 or 5 first day picks – how often does that happen? The draft should be fantastic!

by quarterhorse on Mar 31, 2009 7:55 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?!?!??!?!

They have no leverage! The owner says they are trading him! Period, end of story. Can’t go back from that. Now we HAVE to trade him. The only leverage we have is that he is a 25 year old PRO BOWL QB so lots of team will (and should) want him.

I don’t think this entire situation could have been handled any worse, by anyone. But at least the Owner and HC/GM should have known better.

grumble, grumble

by Elway's Ghost on Mar 31, 2009 9:56 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only leverage we have is a bunch of teams bidding against each other ;=)

by spock on Mar 31, 2009 10:16 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

how leverage is developed

The amount of suitors who came forward recently means that Denver can what the market will bear. It’s essentially an auction where competing buyers are vying for an item they all value. The dynamics might be different if only a few buyers were out there, but Denver can ask an exorbitant price and expect to get it.

by Colinski on Mar 31, 2009 10:32 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Don’t worry about leverage…we have lots and lots of leverage. His cap hit is minimal, his potential is through the roof and there are multiple teams that want him. No way should we get less than the equivalent of three 1st round picks.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Cutler to Dallas for Romo and 2010 1st Round Pick

With the rumors of Shanahan coaching Dallas in 2010, you have to think Jerry Jones is thinking this in the back of his mind.

Where to from here?

Do we draft one of the top two QB’s this year? Do we trade for a prospect on another team? Do we stick with Simms and wait for one of the QB’s likely to enter the draft next year? Should we rush to figure out our QB situation, or do we take our time and get the best deal possible?

you’ll make him a hero. Think about it. He played at Vandy. He got crushed on a weekly basis and he was the best player on the team. They lived or died with him and the people worshiped him. You think that will faze him? He makes the playoffs there and he becomes a legend.

Not true diehard.

  With all due respect to ya, but I am living on the Tennessee and Ketucky border. Surrounded by Titan fans, and every one down here wanted him to stay, to include Jeff Fisher (Titans coach). Denver was willing to pay too much though, and Vince Young’s contract is too pricy over it’s duration to keep both these guys in Tennessee.

I think the league thought Simms wasn’t quite “game-ready” last season due to his “spleen-issue”… I think the Broncos jumped on him early because they saw a lot of upside as either a backup or plug-n-play starter…

by quarterhorse on Mar 31, 2009 8:02 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

good response - fair enough

Going by what I remember, Simms always thought more of himself than many coaches. He whined in college for being benched and the same in Tampa. When released by Tampa, it seemed he was a FA for some time before Tenn picked him up due to his high priced contract. I’ll admit a complete bias as well, as I can’t stnd his father who also has a high opinion of himself. I guess it runs in the family.

how can you be critical of Simms attitude, and then not hold Cutler to the same litmus test?

you already know.

by justwhytee on Mar 31, 2009 8:42 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cutler vs Simms attitude?

I do justwhytee. They have both shown that they lack maturity. Simms has a history, and Cutler is showing it now. The difference is that Simms threw a fit everytime he was benched because according to him, he was the best player. Cutler has his feelings hurt and probably believes he’s going to stick it to the Broncos by leaving (because mabey he thinks he’s irreplaceable). I would say that some fat ego’s are in play with both of these young men. Mabey Simms has grown a bit in the last year, we’ll see.

I guess they both have issues, but the bottom line is, that only one of these two want to play in Denver.

actually

We don’t really want high first rounders. We’d be better off with a slew of slightly lower picks and a few players in the deal.

I don’t know that we want to commit to using a high pick on Stafford at this point, not that he’s bad, but many more picks in the 2-4 range (with a #1 or two) would help us more than high 1st rounders. I could see Curry, perhaps, but we could stack this team at a lot of positions if we could parlay Cutler into a bunch moderately high picks (i.e., 2d, 3rd rounders, etc.). Think Herschel Walker trade.

Minnesota Vikings Received:

    * RB Herschel Walker
    * Dallas’s 3rd round pick – 1990 (54) (Mike Jones)
    * San Diego’s 5th round pick – 1990 (116) (Reggie Thornton)
    * Dallas’s 10th round pick – 1990 (249) (Pat Newman)
    * Dallas’s 3rd round pick – 1991 (68) (Jake Reed)

 Dallas Cowboys Received:

    * LB Jesse Solomon
    * LB David Howard
    * CB Issiac Holt
    * RB Darrin Nelson (traded to San Diego after he refused to report to Dallas)
    * DE Alex Stewart
    * Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1990 (21) They traded this pick along with pick (81) for pick (17) from Pittsburgh to draft (Emmitt Smith)
    * Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1990 (47) (Alexander Wright)
    * Minnesota’s 6th round pick in 1990 (158) (traded to New Orleans, who drafted James Williams)
    * Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional) – (11) (Pat Harlow)
    * Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional) – (38) (Darryll Lewis)
    * Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1992 (conditional) – (37) (Darren Woodson)
    * Minnesota’s 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional) – (71) (traded to New England, who drafted Kevin Turner)
    * Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1993 (conditional) – (13) (traded to Philadelphia Eagles, and then to the Houston Oilers, who drafted Brad Hopkins)

No one is blameless here.

The owner: Fires a coach with a proven track record. Hires a Patriots assistant. Because that’s always worked out for the best. Just ask Romeo Crennell and Charlie Weis.

The coach: Was not fully on-board with a potential franchise QB. Alienates QB to the point that the situation blows up.

The agent: Obviously only in it for his client’s best interest. Does his job.

The player: Pouts, whines, demands . . . even though his track record up to this point shouldn’t allow for that many concessions.

And what do we get? Yikes.

Again. No one is blameless here. Anyone who believes otherwise is just a damn fool.

I've got two serious questions

1) How quick do the Broncos move on this trade? Do they play chicken with teams and drive the Cutler car right up to draft day…or do they pull the trigger sooner so that they can prep for the draft based on their new draft picks, which I assume they’ll have for this year’s draft.

2) Does anyone else think that Jay secretly hopes that the team he’s traded to happens to hire Shanny next season? That thought has crossed my mind a time or two…

Beware the wrath of a patient adversary.

who knows where..but yea...

I wonder if he never coped with Shanny’s departure… and think about it…any team we trade him to could easily dump their HC next season for Shanny.

re: bcfunk's 2 questions

They can move him pretty quickly, it just depends on how much interaction they get before the best offer is reached (teams outbidding other teams, etc). I don’t think it will take a long time to put something together, since there were ten teams that indicated an interest just recently. I’d expect a blockbuster trade by draft day or sooner. And, of course, it’s going to dominate football coverage until it happens, so prepare to be inundated.

Re: Shanny question. Maybe, but it’s hard to find situation where they need a QB and a new HC next year. Many of the teams that are in the market for Cutler already have new coaches. I can’t say I know the situation for all the teams, but the odds are long because there are so many teams. Jay may have hoped but it wasn’t a realistic hope, and we’re not going to trade him some place just to make his hopes come true.

Great job Bowlen...Hope Cutler kicks your teeth in for the next decade.

Bowlen interviews all the candidates and chooses McDaniels and says he has some Hawaiian word for wisdom and he hires him. The idiot coach nearly spends all the cap room on a backup QB that he is comfortable with instead of addressing that 14 million dollars on defense. The trade blows up and he still says no one is untouchable. You don’t treat a franchise QB that way. Cutler might need to grow up a bit. But one thing McDaniels doesn’t have is wisdom. I DON"T BLAME CUTLER a bit if this is a business like everyone keeps saying…I see…it’s ok to trade a player at your convenience but the player has no right to respond and ask for his own trade? Go Cutler…hope you make it to a team that can win a Super Bowl…I wish you the best!!!!!!!

by Reno_Chief on Mar 31, 2009 8:36 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Horsecrap Reno

Absolutely he has the right…..he signed the contract with the Broncos…..why then did he almost become a Bucaneer, Lion. or whatever team McDaniels was trying to peddle him to…..if they can move him then by all means request a trade….look how many teams are lining up…..Cutler has the goods and the leverage…Go Cutler…If my boss lied to me like that I had the talent Cutler had I would at least explored my options. YOU DON"T TREAT A FRANCHISE QB THAT WAY!!!!

by yallas on Mar 31, 2009 8:51 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

He has the right to ask

But the problem is that he is pissed that he is an asset. When you sign that contract, you know damn well that your talent belongs to that team for the duration of that contract. I would agree that you don’t treat a franchise quarterback that way (or people in general) but I honestly don’t think McDaniels did anything that warranted this kind of reaction.

Cutler screwed you over and everybody at MHR simply because his feelings were hurt. I would be pissed! You don’t treat fans like that either.

I have faith

as I said I expect the team to be better next season overall. I’ve liked the other changes McD has brought in on defense and expect them to find some real contributors in the draft, and our offense is otherwise really solid. But without a good QB it’s still hard to win. I do think the D will be a lot better next season. But again, right now, if Cutler’s a goner, there’s a big hole behind center. Ouch!!!!!!!!! Pro Bowl QB for 32 year old rookie HC.

Bad move Mr. Bowlen.

Now we have to start looking for another QB to lead the team — only took 8 long years last time!

God I am really going to have a hard time liking McD!!!

by Elway's Ghost on Mar 31, 2009 8:05 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

You have to ask yourself

Was this going to happen regardless of who Bowlen hired? (probably) And should you really be making organizational decisions based on what keeps your QB from moping?

Depends on the QB...

… and yes, some of us thought Cutler could be that good.

That said, his whiny and lack of mental toughness through this whole ordeal makes me question whether he can really make the changes to his game (i.e. fewer stupid throws into coverage/ints) to take him from a very good QB (replaceable) to a great one (irreplaceable).

by cjfarls on Mar 31, 2009 9:55 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is no denying

That he could be that good. He is shooting HIMSELF in the foot on this one.

I agree that this might have been mishandled from day one, but you cannot fault a coach for showing interest in a QB that is a proven commodity in HIS system. Cutler is unproven in the system being installed in Denver, over confident in his arm, and overly sensitive about anyone saying so.

Bowlen and McD have stood pat after the bungled “trade” rumors, that Cutler would be the QB if HE wanted to be. CUTLER does not want to be a Bronco, and as a Bronco fan, that is the last straw. Cutler is against us, against his fans his teammates and the person that has paid him a lot of money for nothing more than mediocrity in terms of wins. If he wants a fat paycheck for nothing then he can find his payday but please, do not question the Broncos motivation in this whole mess to be anything more than wanting to win.

+1

The more I think about it, the more I believe this would have happened anyway -regardless of who Bowlen hired as HC. Jay has been upset about Shanny’s firing from the beginning, and I believe has been a malcontent ever since. The noise from the other players was about excitement and enthusiasm for McD when he was first brought on -except Jay. If it hadn’t been the trade rumors, it would have been something else. He doesn’t want to be a Bronco -so lets get what we can for him and lets move on.

Go Broncos!

So... what is the best trade the Broncos can get?

Can they get a good QB in return? (ie, the aforementioned Tony Romo)

Draft picks… an all-pro player (like the Portis for Champ trade a few years ago, which this sort of reminds me of).

He scrambles with the ball way out to his side, which is good for a sack and a fumble quite often. I agree with below… Carson Palmer is a better idea.

…having to admit that Phyllis was right.

One interesting thing to consider…if they trade Cutler to the Browns, we’ll see him at Mile High at some point this season. That could get ugly for Jay or McD….

"You're slow. You're not a running back, and you're not a running back for a reason." ---Shanny to Marcus Thomas...

If you mean Rivers

he was right about Cutler in saying that he’s immature but I’m sure you’d agree it doesn’t change the fact that Rivers is still an immature punk himself.

Cutler!

I still blame McDaniels for all this. This is a disaster for the Broncos and their fans. We finally get our next great QB and McDaniels pisses him off so much that he can’t overcome his dislike for McDaniels and forces a trade. What really makes me mad is that McDaniels had to tell Bowlen when he was interviewed is he would look forward to working with Cutler and then once he is hired he tries to get Cassell. Cutler should have been able to forgive and forget but he couldn’t. Will be interesting to see if McDaniels drafts Stafford, Sanchez, or somebody else. Cutler is the most talented QB that will be traded since Elway except we will be on the wrong end of this one unless we get a great rookie QB or great veteran. We should be able to get at least 2 1st round picks and one or two more players for Cutler. This will be a blockbuster trade but I hate it has come to this. Culter will probably win at least 1 Super Bowl and probably more in his career but I don’t know if McDaniels will one in Denver. McDaniels is on very short leash in my book now like Wade Phillips was and he only lasted 2 seasons.

Cutler is most talented qb to be traded since elway?

c’mon now, Montana got traded, Brees got traded, Eli Manning got traded (I don’t like him or think he’s particularly great…but has has the jewelry), It seems like Cutler hasn’t wanted to be a Bronco since the day Shanny/Bates left…and the general consensus is that McD did not actively pursue Cassel, rather he looked at an offer…which is his job. If he really wanted Cassel, he would have had an offer ready they day he took the job and would not have been late to the discussions.

I really don't think McD would take a QB in round 1 or 2.

I would expect to see one in the middle rounds that he could groom to start in 2011 or so.

He doesn't have that much time...

…now that this has blown up. He needs to win within two years, so development of a young QB is not in the cards (UNLESS Bowlen lets them get Stafford and his 38 Wunderlick, then he may have 3-4 years to build a dynasty).

All those rational decisions on “who will be my D coordinator this year, open the phonebook to page 6 close my eyes aaaaaaaaaand, THERE!”

Don’t get me wrong, I supported Shanny while he was a Bronco, but he was losing his edge, getting too comfortable with mediocrity.

I asked this earlier...but with all the comments streaming in...

How quick do the Broncos move on this trade? Do they play chicken with teams and drive the Cutler car right up to draft day…or do they pull the trigger sooner so that they can prep for the draft based on their new draft picks, which I assume they’ll have for this year’s draft.

Since we’ve let the cat out of the bag and are now shopping Cutler, I tend to think we’ll make a deal sooner than later. Thoughts?

doesnt matter he can ride the pine or even better

Make him the practice squad QB and promote Hackney to the bench just to piss him off.

LOL!

I think that gets us Broncos fans more irked than anything else! the irony is classic… fortunately for us, BDAWK will exact our revenge!

BDAWK is one of my favorite players

but was being taken out regularly on passing downs last year. His impact is going to be purely spiritual.

Philly

played with only 1 saftey, we’ll use two so he won’t be a liability on passing downs.

unwrinkle your undies buddy

the only reason you wanna have Cutler’s babies is b/c he was a Denver Bronco and supposedly you’re “MTBroncoFan,” time to be a real fan…I heard Ray Lewis say he watches his teammates particularly when thery’re losing, b/c that’s when you see what they’re made of…

you already know.

This is all on Jay.

He’s been all butt hurt since Shanny & his boyfriend Bates got shown the door. Cutler & his sleazy agent jumped all over the Cassell talks as a way to get out, when it was really b/c he couldn’t suck it up and get over Shanny & Bates firing. Our front office wanted Cutler to be a Bronco, Cutler obviously doesn’t want to don the orange & blue so I say have fun getting your ass handed to you in Detroit you little punk ass!

Yeah, that only works if he can get the ball off in .5 seconds.

Detroit’s O-Line is horrendous and won’t give him time to throw touchdowns.

Argh

But is this just a childish way for our new young coach to get the QB he really wants. I really hope not, please not be a punk. I just think none of this should have even gone this far. I just don’t know what to think of all this. If we can not have Cuts on our team any more. Then I would like to have Quinn for some reason he seems the best option for me to be ok with loosing Jay. I like the Quinn and Rogers + pick deal.

This is obviously a moot point,

however, it’s pretty frustrating to think that at the end of last season we were a few key defensive acquisitions and a few schematic adjustments away from a SB contender.

Now we are a team with a rookie HC and no QB starting from square one. sigh

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!
