Bowlen: 'The Broncos will trade Jay Cutler'
Many of us never thought it would come to this, or perhaps we chose to ignore the writing on the wall. Whatever the case, the Denver Broncos will look into trading QB Jay Cutler.
Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen made the following statement earlier today -
“Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by Head Coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful. A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded.”
The writing was on the wall yesterday when Bowlen mentioned he had tried to contact Cutler only to be rebuffed. It's one thing to ignore the Head Coach. It is completely and uttlery classless and unprofessional to ignore the Owner, your boss, the guy who signs the paycheck.
Whoever is to blame, Josh McDaniels and the Broncos or Bus Cook / Jay Cutler, I cannot help but think the way Cutler and Cook have handled this has been nothing short of unacceptable.
Now we begin the who and where. It may not seem like it now, but the Broncos will be better off. All 53 guys in that locker room have to want to play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back. Your QB had better be the leader of that movement. Jay Cutler was not and will now find himself somewhere else.
Stay tuned....

Ugh...
I don’t even know what to say. I can’t believe this is happening.
A hearty EFF YOU
to everyone involved. Mistakes by everyone. This is terrible.
No looking back...
… I’ve come to accept this. I have been in awe of Jay’s talent. I’ve watched the guy warm up within feet of him and just… well it doesn’t matter now does it?
Here’s the deal: this is good for us. If you get past the whole Shanahan debacle and accept that McD is the guy then it’s easy to see why it’s better this happened now than later.
And this WOULD have happened later. It would have been under completely different circumstances but it would have happened.
At least now we can extract maximum value from the situation and move on. I thought Quinn played very well against us on MNF btw. My opinion. Whomever they get needs to have a quick release with those 4 WR sets.
agree 100%
it would have come to head at some point – especially if Jay struggles under the new system. The chatter would never stop.
I blame both
McDaneils stubborn and stupid, but Cutler give him a chance and move on, Cutler failed to come down to earth THE REAL EVIL IS BUS COOK, DONT BUY INTO CUTLER’S BS HES BEING BRAINWASHED.

This sucks!
Not only have I loved Jays ability but I have been hypeing him as the next great QB in the NFL to everyone I know for years. Now he is gone.
All I can say is that Mcadanials better win immediatly or he will be RUN out of Denver.
Also, please trade him to the NFC, I dont want to face him.
On the other hansm peace you little BABY!
Send him to Minnesota for Adrian Peterson
ha ha.
In all seriousness, how many teams are going to want someone who put his organization through this?

Answer: about 3/4th of the teams in the NFL
Because they won’t try to trade him for a weak-armed 1 year wonder.
I am SO bitter (obvioulsy).

Yeah
It’s not like Jay demanded a trade for no reason. A lot of teams would love having him.
I really don't want to rehash this
but Jay has no reason to ask for a trade. That is if he is a man. Who knows. He could have been fooling all of us. I am glad he is going to take his PMS somewhere else.
Start the bidding...
At three 1’s. Or two 1’s and a star. The MSM will go crazy saying Denver has no leverage. But Cutler is under contract, and his cap number in 2009 is very low ($1.035 million). There will be plenty of teams interested. Denver will get their price.
agreed..
this is the right move – we will be better off in the long run. We could end up with 4 or 5 first day picks – how often does that happen? The draft should be fantastic!
by quarterhorse on Mar 31, 2009 7:55 PM MDT up reply actions
What?!?!??!?!
They have no leverage! The owner says they are trading him! Period, end of story. Can’t go back from that. Now we HAVE to trade him. The only leverage we have is that he is a 25 year old PRO BOWL QB so lots of team will (and should) want him.
I don’t think this entire situation could have been handled any worse, by anyone. But at least the Owner and HC/GM should have known better.
grumble, grumble
by Elway's Ghost on Mar 31, 2009 9:56 PM MDT up reply actions
The only leverage we have is a bunch of teams bidding against each other ;=)
"In the empty spaces - lacunae, vacuums, pauses, voids, black holes - new things begin. We are born anew from the unexplored space, the badlands, the outlaw territory." - Sam Keen
how leverage is developed
The amount of suitors who came forward recently means that Denver can what the market will bear. It’s essentially an auction where competing buyers are vying for an item they all value. The dynamics might be different if only a few buyers were out there, but Denver can ask an exorbitant price and expect to get it.
Yeah
Don’t worry about leverage…we have lots and lots of leverage. His cap hit is minimal, his potential is through the roof and there are multiple teams that want him. No way should we get less than the equivalent of three 1st round picks.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
APRIL FOOL'S!!!!!!!!
What if Josh and Jay came out and said that tomorrow?
I seem to have lost my future self.
it would be the greatest torpedo to the MSM ever
especially if they came out and said, “how bet them apples!” But I seriously doubt Bowlen would do that…

Cutler to Dallas for Romo and 2010 1st Round Pick
With the rumors of Shanahan coaching Dallas in 2010, you have to think Jerry Jones is thinking this in the back of his mind.
seriously?
Romo? come on, you can do better than that.
by metal_militia on Mar 31, 2009 7:28 PM MDT up reply actions
There's definetely better deals draft picks wise...
But I’d rather have Romo instead of Quinn or Simms
That's my teammate...that's my quarterback
And if you guys do that, man, that’s unfair.
Where to from here?
Do we draft one of the top two QB’s this year? Do we trade for a prospect on another team? Do we stick with Simms and wait for one of the QB’s likely to enter the draft next year? Should we rush to figure out our QB situation, or do we take our time and get the best deal possible?

I can’t believe the Cutler situation has come this far. I am not a Broncos fan, but Cutler is a good QB. He would probably have more longevity than McDaniels.

but I traded Cutler to the Bengals for Carson Palmer in Madden 2 weeks ago; ergo, I’m mentally prepared myself for this day. I predict at least 300+ comments with this post. :)

Not true diehard.
With all due respect to ya, but I am living on the Tennessee and Ketucky border. Surrounded by Titan fans, and every one down here wanted him to stay, to include Jeff Fisher (Titans coach). Denver was willing to pay too much though, and Vince Young’s contract is too pricy over it’s duration to keep both these guys in Tennessee.

I think the league thought Simms wasn’t quite “game-ready” last season due to his “spleen-issue”… I think the Broncos jumped on him early because they saw a lot of upside as either a backup or plug-n-play starter…

good response - fair enough
Going by what I remember, Simms always thought more of himself than many coaches. He whined in college for being benched and the same in Tampa. When released by Tampa, it seemed he was a FA for some time before Tenn picked him up due to his high priced contract. I’ll admit a complete bias as well, as I can’t stnd his father who also has a high opinion of himself. I guess it runs in the family.

how can you be critical of Simms attitude, and then not hold Cutler to the same litmus test?
you already know.
Cutler vs Simms attitude?
I do justwhytee. They have both shown that they lack maturity. Simms has a history, and Cutler is showing it now. The difference is that Simms threw a fit everytime he was benched because according to him, he was the best player. Cutler has his feelings hurt and probably believes he’s going to stick it to the Broncos by leaving (because mabey he thinks he’s irreplaceable). I would say that some fat ego’s are in play with both of these young men. Mabey Simms has grown a bit in the last year, we’ll see.
I guess they both have issues, but the bottom line is, that only one of these two want to play in Denver.

actually
We don’t really want high first rounders. We’d be better off with a slew of slightly lower picks and a few players in the deal.
I don’t know that we want to commit to using a high pick on Stafford at this point, not that he’s bad, but many more picks in the 2-4 range (with a #1 or two) would help us more than high 1st rounders. I could see Curry, perhaps, but we could stack this team at a lot of positions if we could parlay Cutler into a bunch moderately high picks (i.e., 2d, 3rd rounders, etc.). Think Herschel Walker trade.
Minnesota Vikings Received:
* RB Herschel Walker
* Dallas’s 3rd round pick – 1990 (54) (Mike Jones)
* San Diego’s 5th round pick – 1990 (116) (Reggie Thornton)
* Dallas’s 10th round pick – 1990 (249) (Pat Newman)
* Dallas’s 3rd round pick – 1991 (68) (Jake Reed)
Dallas Cowboys Received:
* LB Jesse Solomon
* LB David Howard
* CB Issiac Holt
* RB Darrin Nelson (traded to San Diego after he refused to report to Dallas)
* DE Alex Stewart
* Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1990 (21) They traded this pick along with pick (81) for pick (17) from Pittsburgh to draft (Emmitt Smith)
* Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1990 (47) (Alexander Wright)
* Minnesota’s 6th round pick in 1990 (158) (traded to New Orleans, who drafted James Williams)
* Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional) – (11) (Pat Harlow)
* Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional) – (38) (Darryll Lewis)
* Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1992 (conditional) – (37) (Darren Woodson)
* Minnesota’s 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional) – (71) (traded to New England, who drafted Kevin Turner)
* Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1993 (conditional) – (13) (traded to Philadelphia Eagles, and then to the Houston Oilers, who drafted Brad Hopkins)
No one is blameless here.
The owner: Fires a coach with a proven track record. Hires a Patriots assistant. Because that’s always worked out for the best. Just ask Romeo Crennell and Charlie Weis.
The coach: Was not fully on-board with a potential franchise QB. Alienates QB to the point that the situation blows up.
The agent: Obviously only in it for his client’s best interest. Does his job.
The player: Pouts, whines, demands . . . even though his track record up to this point shouldn’t allow for that many concessions.
And what do we get? Yikes.
Again. No one is blameless here. Anyone who believes otherwise is just a damn fool.

I've got two serious questions
1) How quick do the Broncos move on this trade? Do they play chicken with teams and drive the Cutler car right up to draft day…or do they pull the trigger sooner so that they can prep for the draft based on their new draft picks, which I assume they’ll have for this year’s draft.
2) Does anyone else think that Jay secretly hopes that the team he’s traded to happens to hire Shanny next season? That thought has crossed my mind a time or two…
Beware the wrath of a patient adversary.
John C. Calhoun --
who knows where..but yea...
I wonder if he never coped with Shanny’s departure… and think about it…any team we trade him to could easily dump their HC next season for Shanny.

re: bcfunk's 2 questions
They can move him pretty quickly, it just depends on how much interaction they get before the best offer is reached (teams outbidding other teams, etc). I don’t think it will take a long time to put something together, since there were ten teams that indicated an interest just recently. I’d expect a blockbuster trade by draft day or sooner. And, of course, it’s going to dominate football coverage until it happens, so prepare to be inundated.
Re: Shanny question. Maybe, but it’s hard to find situation where they need a QB and a new HC next year. Many of the teams that are in the market for Cutler already have new coaches. I can’t say I know the situation for all the teams, but the odds are long because there are so many teams. Jay may have hoped but it wasn’t a realistic hope, and we’re not going to trade him some place just to make his hopes come true.
Go Broncos!!! No Matter What!
But what a screw up firing Shanny!!
What a colossal freaking screw-up!!

Quinn + Rogers??
Great job Bowlen...Hope Cutler kicks your teeth in for the next decade.
Bowlen interviews all the candidates and chooses McDaniels and says he has some Hawaiian word for wisdom and he hires him. The idiot coach nearly spends all the cap room on a backup QB that he is comfortable with instead of addressing that 14 million dollars on defense. The trade blows up and he still says no one is untouchable. You don’t treat a franchise QB that way. Cutler might need to grow up a bit. But one thing McDaniels doesn’t have is wisdom. I DON"T BLAME CUTLER a bit if this is a business like everyone keeps saying…I see…it’s ok to trade a player at your convenience but the player has no right to respond and ask for his own trade? Go Cutler…hope you make it to a team that can win a Super Bowl…I wish you the best!!!!!!!

The player doesn’t have the right to ask for a trade! What the hell does he think a contract is? He signed it, he should abide by it and shut his freaking mouth. How in the hell do you people stand up for this colossal douchebag? It is absolutely not McDaniels fault, and I don’t particularly like McDaniels either.
Horsecrap Reno
Absolutely he has the right…..he signed the contract with the Broncos…..why then did he almost become a Bucaneer, Lion. or whatever team McDaniels was trying to peddle him to…..if they can move him then by all means request a trade….look how many teams are lining up…..Cutler has the goods and the leverage…Go Cutler…If my boss lied to me like that I had the talent Cutler had I would at least explored my options. YOU DON"T TREAT A FRANCHISE QB THAT WAY!!!!
He has the right to ask
But the problem is that he is pissed that he is an asset. When you sign that contract, you know damn well that your talent belongs to that team for the duration of that contract. I would agree that you don’t treat a franchise quarterback that way (or people in general) but I honestly don’t think McDaniels did anything that warranted this kind of reaction.
Cutler screwed you over and everybody at MHR simply because his feelings were hurt. I would be pissed! You don’t treat fans like that either.

"Battle not with stupid, lest ye become stupid, and if you gaze into the Internet, the Internet gazes also into you" -R. K. Milholland
Depends on the QB...
… and yes, some of us thought Cutler could be that good.
That said, his whiny and lack of mental toughness through this whole ordeal makes me question whether he can really make the changes to his game (i.e. fewer stupid throws into coverage/ints) to take him from a very good QB (replaceable) to a great one (irreplaceable).
There is no denying
That he could be that good. He is shooting HIMSELF in the foot on this one.
I agree that this might have been mishandled from day one, but you cannot fault a coach for showing interest in a QB that is a proven commodity in HIS system. Cutler is unproven in the system being installed in Denver, over confident in his arm, and overly sensitive about anyone saying so.
Bowlen and McD have stood pat after the bungled “trade” rumors, that Cutler would be the QB if HE wanted to be. CUTLER does not want to be a Bronco, and as a Bronco fan, that is the last straw. Cutler is against us, against his fans his teammates and the person that has paid him a lot of money for nothing more than mediocrity in terms of wins. If he wants a fat paycheck for nothing then he can find his payday but please, do not question the Broncos motivation in this whole mess to be anything more than wanting to win.

The more I think about it, the more I believe this would have happened anyway -regardless of who Bowlen hired as HC. Jay has been upset about Shanny’s firing from the beginning, and I believe has been a malcontent ever since. The noise from the other players was about excitement and enthusiasm for McD when he was first brought on -except Jay. If it hadn’t been the trade rumors, it would have been something else. He doesn’t want to be a Bronco -so lets get what we can for him and lets move on.
Go Broncos!

So... what is the best trade the Broncos can get?
Can they get a good QB in return? (ie, the aforementioned Tony Romo)
Draft picks… an all-pro player (like the Portis for Champ trade a few years ago, which this sort of reminds me of).
Do you think Tony Romo is consistent enough? I think he is terribly inconsistent.
He scrambles with the ball way out to his side, which is good for a sack and a fumble quite often. I agree with below… Carson Palmer is a better idea.

I was really hoping it wouldn’t come to this, however a little part of me thought this could happen. My thoughts are that if he doesn’t want to play for the Broncos then get rid of him so we can get back to normal duties…….learing a new system with whoever our QB will. Hey Simms, it’s your turn. I bet he didn’t see this comming.

You know the worst part about this whole thing?
…having to admit that Phyllis was right.
One interesting thing to consider…if they trade Cutler to the Browns, we’ll see him at Mile High at some point this season. That could get ugly for Jay or McD….
"You're slow. You're not a running back, and you're not a running back for a reason." ---Shanny to Marcus Thomas...
If you mean Rivers
he was right about Cutler in saying that he’s immature but I’m sure you’d agree it doesn’t change the fact that Rivers is still an immature punk himself.
Cutler!
I still blame McDaniels for all this. This is a disaster for the Broncos and their fans. We finally get our next great QB and McDaniels pisses him off so much that he can’t overcome his dislike for McDaniels and forces a trade. What really makes me mad is that McDaniels had to tell Bowlen when he was interviewed is he would look forward to working with Cutler and then once he is hired he tries to get Cassell. Cutler should have been able to forgive and forget but he couldn’t. Will be interesting to see if McDaniels drafts Stafford, Sanchez, or somebody else. Cutler is the most talented QB that will be traded since Elway except we will be on the wrong end of this one unless we get a great rookie QB or great veteran. We should be able to get at least 2 1st round picks and one or two more players for Cutler. This will be a blockbuster trade but I hate it has come to this. Culter will probably win at least 1 Super Bowl and probably more in his career but I don’t know if McDaniels will one in Denver. McDaniels is on very short leash in my book now like Wade Phillips was and he only lasted 2 seasons.
Cutler is most talented qb to be traded since elway?
c’mon now, Montana got traded, Brees got traded, Eli Manning got traded (I don’t like him or think he’s particularly great…but has has the jewelry), It seems like Cutler hasn’t wanted to be a Bronco since the day Shanny/Bates left…and the general consensus is that McD did not actively pursue Cassel, rather he looked at an offer…which is his job. If he really wanted Cassel, he would have had an offer ready they day he took the job and would not have been late to the discussions.
Have a good time all the time...that's my motto. - Viv Savage

welcome to the dumbest move in the history of the franchise. i would fire mcd first, and many people agree. might as well trade scheff and marshall, too. let’s go all defense, and see what happens. a very Jet-like move, i have to say. are we the new clowns of the nfl, striped socks and all? what a joke
taste my blintzkrieg!
2009-year of the defense.
I really don't think McD would take a QB in round 1 or 2.
I would expect to see one in the middle rounds that he could groom to start in 2011 or so.
I seem to have lost my future self.
He doesn't have that much time...
…now that this has blown up. He needs to win within two years, so development of a young QB is not in the cards (UNLESS Bowlen lets them get Stafford and his 38 Wunderlick, then he may have 3-4 years to build a dynasty).
I would love to hear from Shanahan about this whole thing.

How quick do the Broncos move on this trade? Do they play chicken with teams and drive the Cutler car right up to draft day…or do they pull the trigger sooner so that they can prep for the draft based on their new draft picks, which I assume they’ll have for this year’s draft.
Since we’ve let the cat out of the bag and are now shopping Cutler, I tend to think we’ll make a deal sooner than later. Thoughts?

unwrinkle your undies buddy
the only reason you wanna have Cutler’s babies is b/c he was a Denver Bronco and supposedly you’re “MTBroncoFan,” time to be a real fan…I heard Ray Lewis say he watches his teammates particularly when thery’re losing, b/c that’s when you see what they’re made of…
you already know.
This is all on Jay.
He’s been all butt hurt since Shanny & his boyfriend Bates got shown the door. Cutler & his sleazy agent jumped all over the Cassell talks as a way to get out, when it was really b/c he couldn’t suck it up and get over Shanny & Bates firing. Our front office wanted Cutler to be a Bronco, Cutler obviously doesn’t want to don the orange & blue so I say have fun getting your ass handed to you in Detroit you little punk ass!
Yeah, that only works if he can get the ball off in .5 seconds.
Detroit’s O-Line is horrendous and won’t give him time to throw touchdowns.
ha ha ha
I would take SPLEEN over any of the trash they have throwing the ball in SF

But is this just a childish way for our new young coach to get the QB he really wants. I really hope not, please not be a punk. I just think none of this should have even gone this far. I just don’t know what to think of all this. If we can not have Cuts on our team any more. Then I would like to have Quinn for some reason he seems the best option for me to be ok with loosing Jay. I like the Quinn and Rogers + pick deal.
For the love of the animals. 24
This is obviously a moot point,
however, it’s pretty frustrating to think that at the end of last season we were a few key defensive acquisitions and a few schematic adjustments away from a SB contender.
Now we are a team with a rookie HC and no QB starting from square one. sigh

Correct me if I'm wrong...
but isn’t this guy still under contract for two years? Sit his a$$ and let him cook. I remember when Big Al sat Marcus Allen. That made no sense, but this might. You should not let players dictate to the team. Let’s see how he likes sitting a whole season in front of Mile High fans.

Hey guess What? Here's a worse possibilty!
The only way McDumbass & Xanders could screw the pooch any worse is to f-up the trade! They’re already 0-1 in that department. Horrible free agency pick-ups and now everyone’s getting what they wanted – Bowlen has a coach not in control, McD gets to circle-jerk over his new QB project, and Cutler gets to leave a sinking ship. Glad my season’s off to such a great start.
When an entity wants to get the most for an item...
aka a player, car, company, etc. The most efficient means to get a the most for that items is to place it at auction. It increases the competition and as a result the return. This should be the same result for the Broncos. Multiple teams in the running should get us the absolute most for cry baby bitch boy… ahem I mean Jay Cutler.
I am going to throw out a sick scenerio
What if we trade Jay to Dallas for Romo, next year Shanahan returns and becomes the coach of the Cowboys, hires back Bates to run the offense and picks up BM, I am having a sick feeling tha Jerry Jones is getting ready to screw us.

I don't either, but I am betting Jerry is thinking about it right now

Who is going to replace him fellas? McD screwed u. I thought Haley was bad with Waters.
Simms
McD coached up Cassell, who hadnt taken a meaningfull snap since High Scool, into a franchise QB in one season. I think Chris Simms will flourish under Mcd behind the best O-line in the NFL. I dont think the Broncos need to trade for a QB. I would rather get a stud D positon player and some high picks.
Agreed
I don’t think we should sell Simms short. Would rather we traded for draft choices and a stud defensive lineman. Hope Detroit or some other garbage dump has one.

I will hang my Cutler jersey up along side my Portis jersey.
I hope McD knows what he is doing!? I kind of think we should trade him instead of Cutler. I really wonder if he knew our offense was number 2 in the league last year. We just needed help on defense.

Great offense 1st 4 games...
… last 12, not so much. Not even good actually… with a couple exceptions (Jets, Falcons, Browns). So 9 out of 16 games were pretty bad.
Walking out of Qualcomm stadium at the end of the year (to find my car had been towed… insult to injury!)… if you had told me I just watched Shanny AND Jay’s last game as a Bronco I’d have choked.
I gotta tell ya though… my other traveling game was Patriots MNF and those two games were really, really ugly. And Jay handled neither well. Got tired of Jay not taking Peyton Manning’s lead and studying the game photos, etc. no matter whether he just threw a TD or INT.
Cutler the Cry Baby!!!
At first I was disappointed about the trade rumors, but now its gone to far. CUTLER is just an over paid cry baby that needs to go!!!!! Im a longtime Bronco fan and hate to see this Drama but He just reminds me of a Young Brett Farve, but without the title. Hit the road Jay, and don’t come back no more!!!!!!!!

All it said is he would try to make an effort.
Hopefully he’s lazy!!

I'm amazed
I look at Tyson Chandler, his team actually did trade him. When it fell thru he went back to work without a word. The whole AFC West is feeling for the Broncos right now. Okay maybe not.

he could out smoke everyone…even the kid that works drive through with the curious rash on his neck.
Peyton Hillis in '09.

Cutler is a pussy little bitch
That is my opinion…this whole thing started with him not understanding the NFL business. Maybe McD made a few missteps, but he tried to fix it, did everything in his power to mend the mistakes. And Cutler and his attitude wouldn’t have anything to do with it. I hope he pulls a Ryan Leaf, and good riddance. I’m glad I have my Jake Plummer #16 jersey!
Wooooo Chris Simms!
I waited 600 comments to post.
This honestly sucks. It sucks a lot. I just bought a Cutler jersey in like, Week 12. I was prepared for this whole thing to blow over, but it just didn’t want to die.
I wanted to blame McDaniels because I never liked his hiring in the first place and hated the idea of implementing the “Patriot Way”. Then, he pissed off our star QB, and then I saw the first thing about the guy I actually liked. He stood his ground. He held firm and placed the long-term focus of the franchise on winning and not on stroking one guy’s ego.
From the very start, Cutler’s actions in this felt suspicious to me. As soon as ANY talk of Cutler being traded surfaced, Cutler had a reaction into the media in no time. It struck me as odd that a guy would be so prepared to be angry. I know Bus Cook certainly didn’t help matters, but come on, at the end of the day the man making decisions is Cutler. Believing he’s brainwashed is completely nuts.
When push came to shove and it was time to settle their differences, Cutler morphed into the spoiled brat who was sulking in the corner. It doesn’t wash the hands of McDaniels, Xanders, and Bowlen, but at least they tried reaching out to the kid. Cutler seemed determined to get out, and at this point, I don’t have any objection.
The Denver Broncos is not where a spoiled brat goes to pout about being mentioned in trade rumors. Being a Denver Bronco represents more than just football. You’re representing a state and have the best fans sports has to offer. If you can’t buy into what it means to be a Denver Bronco, then you should have Rod Smith and Al Wilson kick your ass the hell out.
Personally, I feel betrayed by Cutler and whenever we play him down the road, I hope we smoke his ass. I hope he tries to impale one his receivers, only to find the waiting hands of D.J. Williams and watch as Marcus Thomas leaves his footprint on Cutler’s chest as the play goes for a pick six.
This entire situation just sucks.
I agree wholeheartedly. Well-said.
Say what you will about McDaniels, he knows what kind of team he wants. He will build it, and they will come. And the broncos will take it to the house, without Jay Cutler.

I can’t see him signing his second contract here after he’s sees this happen to JC.
After he sees this happen to JC?
How about after the entire team sees what Jay did to them. The whole organization from top to bottom wanted JC as our QB, he doesn’t want to be here. This is all on him. Have fun in the shitty D town.

loyalty
Sorry Bronco fans for i went threw some of the the same stuff last year living in Wisconsin being a big packer fan.You guys know how that went but I’m upset with some of the fans of sport. How can a lot of you guys blame the players, if i was Cutler i would be mad to. I thought he was the future qb when Elway left but, you try and get another good qb to possibly replace me. The deal didn’t work now trade me it would be the same if some one had a bad year and they wonted to trade him. Its business the team do whats best for the team and the players have to do whats best for them so get of Jay’s back there needs to be Loyalty on both sides
So Cutler was involved in trade talks that never materialized?
Well boo freakin hoo, join the party. There’s hardly a player that isn’t involved in trade talks at one point or another regardless of their talent. Cutler’s agent was the one who leaked it all to the media and caused this whole ordeal. They could’ve handled this behind closed doors like almost every other player/agent/front office would have. Instead Cutler & Cook caused this from day 1. That Cutler has taken it this far only indicates that he wanted out once Shanny was fired and the Cassell issue is a smokescreen by Cutler & Cook to make McD look bad and to get what they wanted…out of Denver.
And you lecture us on our lack of loyalty to our punk QB who doesn’t want to play anymore for the team we love? For the team he signed a contract to play for? The reason Cutler is leaving is b/c he wants to leave. Why shouldn’t we be blaming “the players” (in this case Cutler) when that is the loyalty that they show to us?
Bus Cook is bad news
I think the combination of Cook and Cutler’s immaturity was a BAAAAD combination. I’m with you, c_style. Boo freakin hoo!
Yeah right, it's a business . . .
So now I’m rooting for a business enterprise? Should I start screaming and yelling for IBM? General Motors? How about Microsoft? Don’t
call me a bandwagon fan because I went through the first 14 winless seasons with the Broncos and have been with them for 49 years. But I have never seen the likes of this, and I’m getting sick of prima donna millionaire players who will just pick up their marbles and leave, and similarly overpaid Napoleonic, “my way or the highway” coaches, and Al Davis wannabes for owners. I’ve just about had it with pro ball.

It is completely and uttlery classless and unprofessional to ignore the Owner, your boss, the guy who signs the paycheck.
Couldn’t agree more, Guru. I could care less about McJaygate, whose fault it is, who should be run out of town, etc. etc. etc. What it comes down to for me now, after processing the 600+ comments above, is this.
Jay Cutler had all the potential in the world to be a great NFL QB. Should he find a way to get back to Shanahan next year, he may get there yet. I hope he does, for his sake. But I’m troubled by what this trade, by design or by pride, means for him.
With his inability to put this behind him, an issue of pride understandably more galling to him than the childish antics of Phyllis Rivers on the sidelines, I have a hard time seeing him getting to the top of a champion’s pedestal. I was hoping that he would show us something — maybe not grace, but something redeeming, in the form of finally learning not to take himself as seriously as he takes the game. Show us you can weather adversity. Show us you’re immune to amateur hour melodrama. Show us you can stare down a disbeliever and PROVE HIM WRONG. Jay Cutler has utterly failed that test.
I hear people calling him, still, a franchise QB. I’m sorry, but a franchise QB would not have put his pride before the franchise. A franchise QB lifts his team, in times of adversity. He takes criticism and runs with it. He stands strong when the world shakes around him. So far, that is not Jay. Someday maybe, but personally I feel no further motivation to wish that for him.
The Denver Broncos are, and will always be, my team, Jay or no Jay.
To blame McDaniels for this weakness of Cutler’s is utter inanity. Certainly McDaniels is somewhat culpable for initiating this, but he’s a rookie and gets a mulligan from me personally. What is baffling to me is that our team captain, our key team leader, wouldn’t cut him the same slack. The issue is not how McDaniels handled the trade talk, it’s the inability of JC to forgive and forget.
Again, this is the same side of Cutler we have been hoping he would put behind him, grow out of, if we were ever going to see him lead us over the Chargers. Bolts games have become head games for Jay, I truly feel that. Maybe he wants a fresh start, maybe he needs one. Whatever. Now he’s going to have one, and we’ll see what he’s made of. I suspect that we’re going to look back on that 06 draft as the Year of the Head Case QBs. For his sake, I hope he finds success somewhere.
We have yet to see one game coached by McDaniels, and love him or hate him in our heart of hearts we truly have no way of knowing what we will have in him until then. He better win, certainly, or his fate will be sealed and lots of people will feel vindicated for raging so strongly against him. But I’m sorry, I’m not just going to pin this mess on the new guy. I expected more from a team leader, a veteran, a so-called franchise QB.
The Denver Broncos will always be my team. Their coach is my coach. I believe in Pat Bowlen, ergo I believe in Josh McDaniels. And I’m over the drama. Let’s trade him for a king’s ransom and move on.
As for Jay, he has bigger issues to contend with.

And the Raiders Laugh....
and laugh and laugh….. Damn this really ticks me off. Should have never gone this far… Don’t like taking over for the raiders in the messed up dept, but I sure can hear them laughing all the way up north and I really hate it….. Well, I guess we start from the beginning and hope for the sun to shine on our butts… we are going to need it… Chris?? are you ready??? my god, how far we have fallen……wheeeewwwwwww, guess there is always basketball and hockey
You think the Raiders are laughing?
Imagine the Chiefs’ reactions. Or, better yet, how much Philip Rivers is p*ssing himself with glee at all of this.
Oh, and don’t count on hockey quelling your anguish too much. Have you seen how bad the Avs are tanking this year? We might actually finish last. And, Super Joe will probably retire once his stupid snow-blower accident heals up.
Our only hope now is the Nuggets. Let’s hope they don’t pull a “Rockies” and get mutilated in the playoffs.
Sad year for colorado sports. . .
It puts the lotion on its skin.
I'm sorry, but the team isn't going to be better off without Cutler.
They might be a better team record wise, but that’ll only be due to defensive upgrades. We’re going to have a far worse QB at the helm than Jay next year and probably for the next 10 years. You don’t get better by getting rid of a franchise QB who hasn’t even hit his prime. You don’t. Yes, he was dumb in this situation, but none of this would’ve happened with marginally competent people making decisions up top.
As much as you want to paint it in a positive light, it’s not a positive thing. You can say it won’t be as cataclysmic as some might seem, but please don’t insult our intelligence and say this is for the better.
Where to begin...
And I quote: “I’m sorry, but the team isn’t going to be better off without Cutler. They might be a better team record wise, but that’ll only be due to defensive upgrades.”
What matters most? The talent level of your QB or your overall win/loss record? You must be from Mars where the only important thing is how good your QB is.
I feel like I am in bizarro world after reading this.
sigh...
I was on the road last night for a good 6 hours, came home, and went to bed immediately… and wake up to this! =/
SIGH…
I haven’t time to comment much lately, but if I had to review back on McD’s comments, I will place money on the point where McD said “and he’ll have to get over some things, which is a challenge, and I understand it, I really do” as the point where Cutler threw his remote at the TV and said I’m out … if he were truly intent on coming back for voluntary workouts before.
SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH…
Josh McDaniels Off Season Checklist
1. Alienate the fans with my off putting, clinical demeanor CHECK
2. Anger the franchise QB and drive him out of town. CHECK
STILL TO DO:
3. Ice down the front steps at Eddie Royal’s house.
4. Sleep with Champ Bailey’s girlfriend.
5. Trade Brandon Marshall to Oakland for a fifth round pick.
6. Turn out the lights at Dove Valley after I am done destroying the Broncos.
The final straw
BTW, as I sat there watching McD ham it up with Cutler’s jersey last week I put myself in Jay Cutler’s shoes, and realized that this was the day he probably decided he was done.
I think that little stunt backfired.
Cutler
Too bad the Broncos are caving in to the little spoiled baby. Don’t call him a Southerner. We in the South know how to live up to a contract and fulfill the contract completely. Instead of trading him, they should tell him either to get with the program or plan on picking a lot of splinters from his backside from sitting on the bench and watching. He should have already been fined for his mouth.
I am with Jay
I wasn’t at first but the more I thought about it – you roll into town and tell me I am your guy, that you took the job because you wanted to develop me as your QB. We start studying the playbook. Things are going well. I am starting to think you’re ok.
THEN I find out you never wanted me all along and are trying to trade me and didn’t have the decency to at least tell me what was going on.
THEN you try to tell me it didn’t happen, even though we all know it did.
THEN you admit that it happened, but go on a publicity tour with my jersey, telling everyone I just need to get over it.
No, you don’t treat players like that. You’re always honest. If you want to trade a guy fine, but be honest with him. Players and coaches have to trust one another, whether they like each other or not.
I think McDaniels bungled this and it all could have been saved with one simple phone call 30 days ago.
That’s my opinion, but I am sticking to it.

Then why don't you replace your avatar
With a pic of Cutler?

A lousy situation
I’m really disappointed it’s come to this. I was hoping the long dry playoff spell following Elway’s retirement would soon be over. Guess it will have to be with someone other than Cutler. I wonder if he’ll return calls to his next head coach and owner.
Have the Broncos gone Bonkers?
Jay Cutler has worked hard for the Broncos for 3 years!
Josh McDaniels has alot to prove, before I would let him just walk in and make major changes to the team structure. This is scary!
It seems like the weak area was defense last year.
Pat Bowlen is giving McDaniels too much control.
Keep Jay Cutler as QB!
Cut to the chase….Bowlen, Cutler and McDaniels need to meet face to face, resolve the issues. Make it happen!
