Tales from the SunnySide: Landing Ronald Fields
Ronald Fields NT
Mike Nolan brought several things with him from San Francisco. He brought the plans for a nascent 3-4 defense, with some hybrid attributes, that is yet to be unveiled. He brought a background in working for the Denver Broncos, an understanding of the traditions of the organization and a knowledge of the town. Oh, yes, and he brought with him the wide-load defensive tackle and nose tackle Ronald Fields.
Fields is a 6'2" defensive lineman who runs between 315 and 330 lbs. depending on who's weighing him, and who came to excite Nolan while he ran the Team by the Bay. A little bit younger than most of our current FA acquisitions, Fields was born on August 13, 1981 so he'll be 28 when the season starts. He shares a birthday with Alfred Hitchcock and like the film master, Fields can fool you. He was a rookie in 2005, drafted in the 5th round (pick 137 overall) by the aforesaid 49ers. In four seasons, the former Mississippi State player has a total of 75 tackles and one sack. These aren't numbers that make you jump off your chair, but there is a reason why Mike Lombardi at the NFP said,
"Excellent power player and if a team wants to run a 3-4, he is the perfect player. He will make a ton of money in the market."
Fields is said to have signed a two year, $5 million contract with the Broncos - not chump change, but not a ton of money either. But what is it that makes Fields such an exciting acquisition? The answers lie in two key areas.
The current catch-word is versatility. If you've missed the NFL.com video of Aaron Curry using it 4 times in 90 seconds, do yourself a favor and hunt it down - it's pretty funny. Fields can play the nose in a 3-4 or a 4-3 formation. He runs a 5.23 40, not that he'll run 40 yards on the field very often. He is fairly good at handling double teams, and can play from the 0- to the 5-technique. He's not a rusher, but he clumps up the middle just fine. He can even play DE in a 30-front. But we'll be smart to groom and keep him for one single job, our starting NT.
The second reason came to light in a new way. From SFGate.com:
"D-Line Discussion
Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula put a camera at the line of scrimmage during the last minicamp to better assess his players. The camera allows Tomsula to see who has the best jump and the quickest hands. A sprinters' jump allows a pass rusher to get up field and into the back field in a flash. Quick hands allow a nose tackle to get his hands on the center right after the snap, when the center only has one hand to fend off the hard-charging nose.
The quickest pair of hands on the line might belong to Ron Fields and is a major reason he's switching from defensive end to nose tackle. Isaac Sopoaga will play more defensive end next year, because he's so quick off the ball. At 330 pounds, Sopoaga is just as quick at the snap as Tully Banta-Cain, who weighs 270. The switch of Fields to nose tackle and Sopoaga to defensive end could make a difference this year in the all-important line play."
Please recall that HT has told us that the key word for linemen in the 3-4 is ‘explosiveness'. That means fast feet and fast hands combined with an ability to anchor. They aren't contradictory skills - they are complementary. For a NT, it's particularly important in controlling the center. It means getting your hands on the O-Linemen before they get theirs on you. From that moment on, you can control the center, control the linemen and control the trenches. Firstfan's substantial experience tells us what all experienced football fans know - the game is won in the trenches. Landing Fields gives us a chance to win, and to win this year.

Constantly shuttled between a 4-3 left defensive tackle, "zero" technique and "five" technique in Nolan's 3-4 hybrid, Fields never got comfortable enough to capture his potential. But the man is only 27, 6'2/321, and was a difference maker when he got to play full time down the stretch in 2006. With quick hands that let him dictate the line of scrimmage, Fields could flourish under a masterful line coach like the Titans' Jim Washburn.

If Fields works out, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Broncos give him that 4-year contract and more than $6 million. It's going to be harder and harder to find those NTs as more teams move to the 3-4 and the 3-4/4-3 hybrid forms that require one.
There's even more to Ron Fields. His Wiki entry tells us that Fields attended Mississippi State University, where he played nose guard, won first-team All-Southeastern Conference accolades, and finished his career with one sack, 172 tackles (16.5 for losses), six quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He majored in teaching and coaching. Ron Fields is more than a nose guard. He's thoughtful, methodical, a tactician and a student of the game. When the Broncos find that next piece, the NT of the future, Fields is the perfect player/coach to mentor him and groom him for the next level.
There's no hurry there, either. Grady Jackson is drawing considerable interest as a possible NT at 35 years of age (editor's note - Jackson agreed to terms with Detroit yesterday). Jamal Williams of San Diego is starting to struggle with injuries and age at 33. At only 27, Fields is just coming into his game. It's often said, rightfully, that D-Linemen take time to mature. He started to come on in 2006, and in 2009 he's ready to move forward and take command of his game. That bodes well for the Broncos. It could be a half-decade or more before that next player needs to step into the starting role for Denver. It's plenty of time to find and groom him, although we may have different backups in between.
Our counterparts at ninernation.com weighed in before the FA period, saying,
Ronald Fields: Fields is a guy who's really struggled to find his way in four seasons with the 49ers. He gets mixed in as a defensive end and defensive tackle but has never really found a specific role. Scouts Inc. indicated he "looks" more like a nose tackle or 4-3 defensive tackle. Of course, given that he's an unrestricted free agent, the 49ers might be willing to let him walk if he wants too much money. I indicated he'd be gone in my early predictions, but a cheap sticker price could keep him in town. He's 27, which is still relatively young, but it might be worth just stocking up in the draft with even younger guys with more upside."
Scouts Inc. had pronounced him a better nose. More importantly, like many younger players he needed to find out what his role was and how to play it. That's why people talked about him struggling - that news was really two seasons past, but we all know how easily players get pigeon-holed by coaches and fans alike. Ron Fields has the body, intellect, desire and talent to be an excellent NT. He is versatile, but he has the capacity to do something that not a lot of players have the drive, desire, body type and skill-set to achieve - playing the 3-4 NT position well.
Some have been concerned that he ‘flew beneath the radar.' That was one thing that I particularly liked - everyone who knew the sport well and knew Fields was certain that he was going to be a good player. The coach who knew him best reached out and made sure that he would be wearing the orange and blue this season. And a team who had a huge question mark staring at them from the NT slot last month now have a fairly young (as the position goes) and very talented man for decent money manning the front and center of the D line.
What does this mean for our draft position? Not much, really. We still have potential openings at DE, could use that 2nd-string DT/NT (Powell is a fine idea, but currently too light and is totally inexperienced at the NFL level), should upgrade the LB corps and grab another safety. Then there is the new reality at WR and TE, depth for the O-Line and the possibility of another RB for competition in camp (I don't know if Hall or Young will make the cut). But we have the anchor for the center of our D-Line, something we've been missing for years.
You have to start building a team by building the lines. Thanks to Mike Shanahan, our O-Line is one of the best in the game. The problems we've had with the D-Line have just gone down a major, 330 lb. notch. That has to leave our fans feeling a lot better about the Broncos as they gear up for a tough schedule in 2009. Landing a NT like Fields has me so excited that, like this referee, I'm ready to start punching out opposing players.

I know Ryan Torain’s grandma stopped in. She was a cool lady, but until he stops getting injured I don’t think she will be stopping by anytime soon. Hopefully, he’ll bust out and tear it up in 2009!

We essentially traded Jake Plummer for Hillis. From one of my favorite recent Broncos to another. I like going back and looking at all those previews of the old draftees. I didn’t know that Fields was this great of an acquisition. Sounds like he will be able to help turn our line around. I hope that we do get a young NT in the draft that can be molded by Fields like you said, that’s one of the keys to our future.
How much is the ref asking?
I want players with a killer instinct. It’s too soon to know how good Fields will be, but at least we have a nose tackle now. Xanders and McDaniels are methodically addressing all our needs, and are getting solid players at affordable prices. I can’t imagine that Shanny would have been making these moves. I give our dynamic duo an A+ for the free agent moves they’ve made so far. I get the feeling that McDaniels and Nolan have a clear idea of what attributes they want on defense, and are going out and getting them. I’m getting more optimistic by the day. Thanks for the excellent background material.

I am SO enthused now about our D. Do I expect to be in the top 10? No. But I am so excited about our FA signings, and am stoked we have signed DE KP and have Marcus. Give us Vonnie and we will be looking good.
Things are not as bad as they seem. ANthony Montgomery would be a good poick up too.
Fileds could be our best, most importnat and best value pick up for the next 5 years if he works out.

Sounds a bit like the Niko signing last year honestly….hope that he does great but why didn’t other teams that have desperate need for NT in the 3-4 throw some money at him….just a thought…really do need him to be great.

I see one big difference between Fields and K2. Fields has played the position in the NFL. There’s game tape on him. K2 was a complete unknown except for STs.
I don’t expect Fields to be the next Jamal Williams, but he fills a critical need at a time when there aren’t many alternatives out there. I still expect us to draft a NT but it typically takes about 3 years for DT/NTs to come into their own. This signing goes a long way toward making us more competitive on the D-line next year.

However, we need to watch out for believing that one player is like another. Wasn’t Clady the next George Foster, because both were tackles? Fields and Niko are dissimilar players and situations.
Fields was used at several positions on the D line. He was good, but didn’t have a chance to develop in one role. They also changed schemes. It’s normal for a DT to take 3 years to develop, and changes in scheme and position make the process longer. That’s why less people know about him.
But when we chose Niko, a perennial backup, to be a starting MLB, there was no reason except a relatively few plays that Shanahan saw that make us think he was starter material. He’d already lost the job two or three times – a poor track record. Fields has won his starter position, overcame being moved plus changes in scheme (so he can learn) and would have been SF’s starting NT this year if we hadn’t taken him. The situations are very different.
I don’t think he’ll be a pro bowl player (although I hope I’m wrong), but as a solid starter who clogs the hole, he’s a pretty good bet. As far as Jamal Williams – He’ll need to have both surgeries he just had be successful to make Jamal Williams play like Jamal Williams, so SD is looking for what we just got – a younger NT. Jamal’s seeing age and miles catch up to him (which is not to say that SWG’s comment was in any way wrong). That’s one reason why Fields is such a nice option – when he’s aging, he’ll want to coach, mentor and teach.

I still am not sure why there wasn’t more money and years on the table for this guy because of the growing trend towards the 3-4…Born in Colorado raised in San Diego and would love us to begin thrashing the Chargers again…

It sounds like that is exactly what Nolan is planning to do here, as well, so he may be in store for the same crap where he can’t get comfortable and won’t play to his potential.

I was looking for a photo on Fields when a SF/Rams game had that one and I thought it was a classic.
I understand what you mean, and there is always a chance that will backfire.However, there are some reasons to believe it willbe fine, too. Fields developed well in that situation. It took a couple of years, but that’s normal for a defensive lineman. He was able to become productive and effective despite that issue.
SF liked his performance sufficiently that they wanted him as their starting 3-4 NT this year. Keep in mind – they also changed schemes a couple of years ago, so Fields has learned both 4-3 and 3-4. So, why didn’t they throw more money at him?
Two reasons. His agent is Drew Rosenhaus, and Drew knew that he could do better by using his UFA status and seeing what the market brought. We made him a very good offer and he bit. Score one for McXanders.
Second, SF has a 330 Isaac Sopoaga to use at NT, so they had a plethora of riches and knew they would be Ok, although they willalso be drafting a DL.

If I understand you and HT correctly, the hand speed possesed by Fields is what allows him to control the Center. This in turn allows him to control two gaps. This is a nightmare for a zone blocking O Line and will cause a man-on-man blocking O Line to double team the NT. This in turn takes a body away from attacking our ILB. The net result is dramatically stopping the offense’s running game. Hmmm… now all of a sudden we are playing with seven in the box which allows us to have a safety to back up our daring Corners. All of this sounds like a recipe for a much improved defense. Could more time on the field possibly give Cutler and Co. more opportunites to score? Could we be playing more with a lead? Bear, I’m ready to chase Zappa and Mike Clark already.

Always a pleasure, sir. I concur with your analysis – hand speed is key in a NT. If it combines with foot speed – and the photography in SF indicated that it does – it does pose a major problem for the ZB schemes. HT mentioned that they should respond with an up-the-gut power running attack that attempts to use the relative speed and athleticism of the ZB center to get him into the body of the NT and to ride the NT out of the play at an angle, with or without the help of a guard. If the NT is able to control the center and keep him at arm’s length, that’s not possible and the DL will win the battle. It would also mean that the NT is doing Job One – keeping his linebackers clean from O linemen. .

I said yesterday I thought BDawk would have the biggest impact on our new D, but this is making me think it will be Ronnie Fields. It seems he at least has the potential to have the biggest impact. Who knows? Maybe Andre Goodman. I’m pretty pumped about the pick-ups on D. I said all of last year, we don’t need a great D with our offense. If we could just get to average, middle of the pack defense, we could win 3-4 more games.
By the way. All these signings have me totally confused as to which way McX is going with the first pick in the draft. At this point, nothing would surprise me. My gut is telling me “best player available”. Whether it be RB (how bout ya Knowshon lovers), NT, LB, S, I don’t know. Hence all my confusion.

The fact that the draft looks confusing now is a complement to the FA signings we have aquired. Now we can draft players that fit the mold of our scheme and develop them under these hard working veteran players instead of trying to find 6 rookie starters.

I was nervous knowing that the NT was probably the biggest key that we hadn’t addressed yet. When Fields came aboard, I felt better. After reading your article, I am – like Boydy – STOKED! Now all we need is a understudy / backup / rotation guy to work with him. I read in the article on Paul Smith that they had 2 rotating teams of 3 when they began the 3-4 in the ’70’s. We need something like that. Looking at what we have for the DL, we are getting close to what we need to be a good working unit.

is very welcome. stopping the run is priority #1, and with this signing, davis, and dawkins, we have some hammers down the middle. i’m not too comfortable with d.j. playing inside, i’d rather have him outside, with larsen or “drafted ilb guy” inside. the remaining area of concern would be the pass-rush. perhaps some blitzing with our lb’s/dawkins will help alleviate that. any lb’s adept at blitzing on the roster? is this where doom/moss/crowder come in, on 3rd down?

I understand your absence from the bus. Too much non Bronco chitter chatter plus the haters and trolls. So I’ve come looking for you. Great article on Fields. I really didn’t know any of his background but it sounds positive. I’m not all yippy skippy over the moves McD has made but it doesn’t matter until they put on the pads and blow the whistle.
