Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

In a statement released last night by the Broncos, team owner Pat Bowlen said that "numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by head coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful."

Cutler’s camp says that’s just not so.

Sources close to Culter told NFL.com senior columnist Thomas George today that the quarterback contends he has not received any such calls from the Broncos.

Sources close to Bowlen responded to George in five words: "We have the phone records."

I am wondering if Bus was the one monitoring or taking the calls and he never told Jay. Is that a possibility!

WTF

Are the Broncos doing?!?!?

Do they understand NOTHING about maintaining trade value???

Dear League:

Please give us lots of draft picks and/or good players for our cry baby (their words, not mine!) QB. We have to trade him right now because our owner says so.

Thanks very much, The Denver Broncos

PS — He is also a liar!

Um, not so smooth guys. Could maybe have played it a little closer to the vest here.

Cutler

He’s a wanted commodity. His value will be high…but there is no way to ever get what he’s worth. Just reality.

by BroncoJeff on Apr 1, 2009 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions

what this market will bear

I commented on this yesterday, and it wasn’t hard because I had previously noted the fact that Cutler’s market value is obviously quite high when the Broncos were rejecting offhand the many offers they were receiving recently.

Here’s Tom Mills, the son of legendary agent Jack Mills, on the subject today:

"- …It’s supply and demand, Economics 101. In this instance, Cutler is the only star quarterback on the market, and a half-dozen teams, maybe more, will be in hot pursuit. Tampa Bay, Detroit, Washington, Minnesota and the Jets are just a few of the possible suitors.

“That’s the key,” Mills said. “You wouldn’t normally make an announcement that a guy is available in trade, but in this case, there’s so much competition it shouldn’t matter. This guy is a 10-year starter. Enough teams covet him, they’re going to have to come with their best offer. Denver should get good value.”

My guess is he’s worth multiple picks, including but not only 2 — #1s. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the number of picks is higher initially (although somewhat lower in value) or if we likewise parlay whatever we obtain into a larger number of lower picks. I would also expect that having those picks over this and next year is one way of lessening the impact on our trading partner.

Free markets = there is no such thing as robbed.

Stimulus or bailouts are robbers…free markets never rob. We will get the best value possible for Cutler. Just because the big banks bought their toxic mortgages at 100% and the free market is saying they are worth just 30% doesn’t mean the banks are getting robbed. It means they screwed themselves. We screwed ourselves by drafting a head case. lol

Disagree

The market will dictate Cutler’s trade value. With so many QB desperate teams and with the cap friendly young Pro Bowl QB on the block, I guarantee you the Broncos will pull the trigger on a pretty attractive deal.

And with regards to playing it closer to the vest, I think the Broncos have been playing it to vest over the past month while Cutler and Cook were pulling their shenanigans. I have no problem at all with their response to the allegation that they never made an attempt to reach out to Cutler. When someone calls you a liar, you have to respond.

by metalmute on Apr 2, 2009 10:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Ghost

Again, I have no problem with Broncos management responding to an outlandish, if not desperate attempt by a party that is doing everything in their power to make themselves look like the victim in this. In my opinion, they had no choice but to respond to a slanderous statement with supportive facts (phone records). If that takes some value away from a trade, then so be it. You have to protect your franchise.

This is going to end up hurting Cutler and his agent’s reputation a hell of a lot more than it will hurt the Broncos. I have a lot more respect for Mr. Bowlen for responding publicly rather than just letting it fester out there, leaving his organization and it’s fans to sit and question whether or not they did everything in their power to make this bad situation right.

And by the way Ghost, exactly what trade would you categorize as “fair market value” for the Broncos since you seem convinced that this response by them will diminish your expectations for a good trade?

by pshin8670 on Apr 1, 2009 3:20 PM MDT up reply actions

But

There is nothing to protect! So “sources” say you never called. Big flipping deal. Why is your pride or honor so sensitive that you need to send your “sources” to your defense? In middle school, I can see it. The head of a Billion dollar organization, not so much.

And why can’t you see that hurting jay Cutler’s reputation is THE VERY LAST thing any Bronco fan should want right now. Pump him up! Hype him to death!!! Make every team and fan out there think he’s Elway 2.0! Don’t trash his character and then put your hand out and ask for top value in trade. To me, that falls under the "duh" category!

As for my view: Unless we get at least 2 top #15 No. 1 picks plus a starter (I don’t care what position) AND we turn those picks or that player in the a +QB (i.e., a QB that is not part of the problem — see every other QB since #7), then we have not gotten enough. Pretty tall order in my opinion, but when you realize what were giving up, that’s the bare minimum I’d accept and not call for a march to Dove Valley with pitchforks and torches.

by Elway's Ghost on Apr 1, 2009 3:46 PM MDT up reply actions

My Issue

With this is that fans have been clamoring for the past 5 weeks for Bowlen to make a statement. Now he has, and fans are all over him. I don’t know that you were one of them, but for the ones that were, make up your mind.

Pat Bowlen has been incredibly successful in the NFL over the past 25 years. He may not be a real football guy, but the guy knows what he wants in his organization, and it generally works pretty well. When he steps in, there is a real reason for it, one that we can only speculate about, but I gotta have Bowlen’s back in this one.

Bowlen has been called a lot of things, but “dishonest” isn’t one of them. He says what he feels, and he always has. He doesn’t say a whole lot, so when he speaks, people listen. I’m inclined to fully support Bowlen in this one.

Please, spare us the Chicago economics

Some others here are trying (poorly and lamentably) to channel Milton Friedman. This whole mess is a reminder that there is no such thing as a free market. This particular one is bounded by ownership with the ability to collude, collective bargaining agreements, terms of contracts and free agency, & c. Free markets exist in textbooks. Here on earth, we have rules, institutions and power.

Which is all to your point. They had no real choice here in outing the phone records — the story was being put out that they hadn’t called Jay. If the Broncos brought this up out of the blue, I’d agree. But if he’s dragging this out, the organization has to save face.

Besides, it’s not like it is all of the sudden going to occur to folks that the guy is a brat. That’s the premise of this whole spat

If we're gonna trade Jay, we HAVE to do it NOW!! Think for a second...what is coming up real soon that could make or break the Denver Broncos.

If we don’t get a QB back from the team we trade Jay to, then we’ll have to use our draft pick. That’s why we have to trade our QB NOW! Not because Bowlen said so. Plus, I would rather have a QB who WANTS to play for my team…not some whiny QB who cries when he finds out that his name was used in trade talks. He can’t even stop crying when McD tells him that he is OUR QB, and that he isn’t going anywhere. Well since the poor baby can’t stop crying, he’s gonna get his wish.

McD – 0
Jay – 1

What I want the Broncos to do before the start of next season:
1) Improve the defense drastically.
2) Improve terms with Jay Cutler.
3) Talk Jay into firing Bus Cook as his agent.
4) Sign Torry Holt to a 1 year deal.

Bowlen

Does Jay honestly believe we would believe him over Bowlen? Past players, past coaches (even Mike who was being FIRED at the time) continue to adore the man as the best owner in football. He has NO history of lying to players or having issues with players; infact, quite the contrary. Jay needs to examine where he is getting his advice because he is being misguided. Bowlen has all the power in the situation and much more power in the NFL as a whole. Jay…remember that contract you signed? Or did you not receive any contact from the Broncos on that as well?

Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya

Cutler is a complete moron. I can’t wait to see Champ take him for a pick 6 whenever he stumbles back into town. How could anybody possibly be that dumb?

At their respective introductory press conferences, McDaniels and Xanders both said that they want players that are “tough, smart, and prepared to work well under pressure”. Clearly Jay has demonstrated that he’s none of the above.

He’s obviously not very tough if he can’t handle a little chatter about him maybe not being the best ever. He obviously doesn’t work well under pressure if he just runs and hides from a challenge. And he obviously isn’t very smart if he wants to leave a quarterback’s dream system behind the best offensive line in the NFL for a place like Detroit or Cleveland, where even the Broncos would get 4 or 5 sacks.

Don’t let the door hit ’ya, Jay.

Sources vs Sources, both unamed

How conveniant, we believe one source but not the other, “We have phone records”, why? Unless this was the plan all along to CYA, to paint Jay into a corner and build a hatred up from the fan base, what exactly do the “records” show, do they show someone called his number, really, big freaking deal, I am sure they had their secretary call the number and wait 30 seconds and hang up. This strikes as petty and insecure dealings strait out of the Belichik play book.

Let's Be Honest, Here

Obviously, Cutler’s “source” is Cook. That’s pretty clear. The Broncos? It would have to be Patrick Smyth, team spokesman, doesn’t it? It’s petty, but if there are phone records, then obviously Cook’s claim isn’t true.

Here's what I look at

Everything that has come out of Dove Valley seems to contradict the previous statments:

“We were not actively shopping Jay Cutler, merely answered the phone”

Then we get

“We were in discussions with the Pats, but we were late in the game”

Numerouos sources now confirm that the Broncos had spoke to many other teams about Jay

McDaniels says he is our QB yet won’t commit to him in the future, pick one, either he is or isn’t.

I truly respect Mr. Bowlen, but I think he has been led astray by a very insecure coach in McDaniels. Jay’s story has been consistent and to my knowledge he has yet to lie about anything when asked a direct question. You may not like the answers, but at least he is not spinning it. Maybe I am wrong, but as much as the whole conspiracy theory from the Broncos side may seem crazy, so does the whole Buzz Cook orchastarted this thing scenerio.

Cook

He may not have orchestrated the entire thing, but I do think that to disregard his role is foolish, regardless of what Peter King and Sandy Clough say.

Notice at the beginning – Cutler has an interview with Gary Miller of CBS4, in which he says that he “hopes” to be in Denver. Then all of a sudden he stops talking, goes into hiding, and he all of a sudden decides that he wants nothing to do with it. Why would we not think that Cook is driving the Bus?

The point is why bring it up

Everyone has phone records that owns a phone, just because I called a number doesn’t mean I had any intention of contacting a person, you can mask numbers, block numbers, etc.., whose to say that they called Jay’s number as a masked number and Jay didn’t pick it up because like me, I don’t answer calls from unmarked or masked numbers. I am saying is rather than take the high road and just say we attempted to contact Jay and we will leave it at that, they look like a desperate attempt to try to turn public opinion.

Why would Cutler's camp say

that they weren’t contacted? How about reasonable doubt?

They know they don’t have to ‘prove’ that Cutler wasn’t at fault here, all they have to do is insert reasonable doubt into the equation. But what does that accomplish?

I think it goes back to the basic motive. Denver is going to get whatever the market dictates for cutler, which will likely be between above average and exceptional. This is regardless of what else happens. But Jay/Bus have somehting else on their mind, always have. When Jay goes to New Detroshington, he still has to be PAID. And not this bullshit $1.035 mil either. Teams will ante up for the trade, but the Jay/Bus camp needs to start doing some damage control, or else the new team will be highly resistant to reworking what is a VERY nice part of the deal for them, which is a low first years payment during the “warranty period” on the trade.

Of course, the Broncos once again pointed to reality. Phone records are, and what they are is everything that “hurt feelings”, “disrespect” and constantly changing stories aren’t, namely, real..

Consider this....

Why would Bowlen say anything at this time? Why not just contact all the owners privately? I think Bowlen is putting his foot down. This is his way of saying show up or just try making the Pro Bowl on your back in Detroit.

Cutler should talk to Matt Cassel because Matt sat on the bench for the first however many years of his career.

Did you see Cassel crying on the sidelines…NO! That’s because he came from a winning school…USC. Meanwhile Jay came from Vandy…a school that has problems with football. I’m not saying Jay sucks but he doesn’t come from a winning program.

What I want the Broncos to do before the start of next season:

One more thing

What school does it matter that he came from:

Elway came from a similar school in Stanford and had very similar record in college, no bowl games, a losing record, can you fault Cutler for going to a great academic school.

Just cause a QB goes to USC does not guarentee greatness:

I give you Matt Leinart, John David Booty, and Todd Marinavich (sp?) to name a few.

Plus, I'm not saying that just because you go to a better school means you are a better player, I'm just saying that one QB is used to winning and the other isn't

For me, part of how I measure how valuable a player is, is by how the handle adversity. I can’t stand Vince Young because of how he handles the ‘boos’ from the crowd. Jay needed to get over him…POSSIBLY being shopped, and he never did. So now we are in the situation where he needs to go unless Jay says everything is okay, which I doubt is going to happen.

What I want the Broncos to do before the start of next season:

2) Improve terms with Jay Cutler.

Jay is used to winning...

…when his defense holds up their end of the bargain. Why do we have to hear about him being a loser when all the elite quarterbacks have the same type of dismal record if their defense gives up the house in points. Enough with that crappy argument. Wherever he goes, the offense will instantly improve, just like ours did when he took over for Plummer. Wait. Plummer had a better record, with inferior offensive output…I gues that means Jake was better than Cutler. I get how this works now.

Careful who you dis...

Leinart may end up as Cutler’s long term replacement. About 8 out of 10 scouts thought Matt was the better QB coming out of college, don’t forget.

by robert ethan on Apr 1, 2009 5:20 PM MDT reply actions

8 to 10 scouts were WRONG.

Leinart is a bust..3 years and not a starter? Come on. That’s as epic of a fail as you can be as a Top 10 QB.

Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.

by Tim Lynch on Apr 1, 2009 5:53 PM MDT up reply actions

8 out of 10?

Please. Any reasonable football fan could see that bust from a mile away. Leinart was knocked mercilessly leading up to the draft because his arm strength was (and still is) comparable to an 80-year-old quadriplegic. Young had question marks for not having sound pocket presence. Cutler, while largely unknown, had great mechanics and won SEC honors (no small feat in one of the biggest football conferences, while playing for one of its worst programs no less).

This isn’t hindsight at work. Many people felt that Cutler was the best QB coming out of that draft, and 3 years later, that’s held true. Of course, all 3 have demonstrated complete lack of mental fortitude required at the NFL level, but that’s another discussion for another day…

by Rob4Braves on Apr 1, 2009 9:03 PM MDT up reply actions

If I knew that Jay was going to turn into this rocket arm QB, I would take him. I'm not saying taking Jay three years ago was a bad move. Just that he doesn't handle adversity very well...or he has a good agent...in terms of getting you money.

What I want the Broncos to do before the start of next season:
1) Improve the defense drastically.
2) Improve terms with Jay Cutler.

Leinart was a starter for parts of his first two seasons..

..and lost the job due to injuries as much as anything else. Not to mention that he has a future Hall of Famer and current near MVP playing in front of him at the moment. Cassel didn’t do too badly once Brady went down, and Matt C. never started a game in college (and lasted until the 7th round) because HE WAS PLAYING BEHIND LEINART. As I recall.

by robert ethan on Apr 1, 2009 7:07 PM MDT reply actions

Everyone is being a bit revisionist about that draft..

Leinart and Vince Young were a tossup for consensus top QB. Cutler was third in all but a few eyes at the time. Will he turn out to be the best of the three? Most of the story is still to be written. I have a feeling that if he was on the same team as Kurt Warner the past couple of seasons he wouldn’t have racked up 4000 passing yards by any means. On the balance, I would still take Leinart first of the three, but truthfully any one of them could be regarded as top dog a couple years down the road. Look how the perspective on Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers/Ben Roethlisberger has changed during the course of the five seasons they have been in the NFL.

by robert ethan on Apr 2, 2009 12:41 AM MDT reply actions

…don’t write off Alex Smith, either, the guy hasn’t turned 25 years of age yet.

by robert ethan on Apr 2, 2009 12:43 AM MDT reply actions

I was thinking about that.

Trade the 49ers for the two firsts and a second and Smith for Cutler? :) I’d take that. Alex Smith flourished with a QB friendly coach and languished under Nolan. Which is also why I don’t think we will get smith…we have Nolan. lol

Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.

by Tim Lynch on Apr 2, 2009 10:11 AM MDT up reply actions

…Alex Smith missed a good part of his rookie season due to injury, but the next year (at the age of 22) in THE ONLY FULL HEALTHY SEASON HE HAS HAD, Smith’s numbers on a very bad 49er team were nearly identical to what current hotshot fave Joe Flacco managed on a much better Baltimore Raven team last season. Flacco was A YEAR AND A HALF OLDER than Smith was in 2006. Does anyone think that Flacco is a bust? For that matter there isn’t a lot of difference between what Smith did at 22 than what last year’s top pick Matt Ryan managed in 2008 at the age of 23. Take away the injuries and who knows where Smith could be now. As it is, he remains with the 49ers and will “compete for the starting position with Shaun Hill” in the upcoming season. If he is fully healed I like his chances.
