Jay Cutler's Diminished Trade Value?
I keep hearing about how Bowlen's statement may have hurt Cutler's trade value or hindered the Bronco's leverage. Let's make this clear to all right now. The only person hurting Jay Cutler's trade value right now is Jay Cutler. Pat Bowlen and the Broncos can do little to stop Jay Cutler from hurting his own image around the league. The media loves Cutler and is working hard to ensure Cutler remains the victim in this feud, but most fans are seeing right through that facade.
Jay Cutler has talent, but he is lacking in leadership and maturity. There is a chance he will find these two qualities with his new team, but it is also likely he will continue to be a head case. I wrote that Jay Cutler is not like Jeff George, but Cutler has some issues that will make reconciliation impossible with the Denver Broncos. I will miss him, but I have had enough distraction. It is time to focus on football and I am sure most of the players in the Broncos locker room feel the same way.
Pat Bowlen has my support as I know he is the one guy in the Broncos organization who will always be a Bronco. My opinion of Josh McDaniels remains unchanged. I want to see what he can do before I lay judgment upon him. I thought we would see an 8-8 record this year, but with all the turmoil thus far I'd be happy with a 6-10 record. My hope is that McDaniels can survive long enough to have a fair shot at turning this team into a winner again. Jay Cutler has done everything possible to cut the legs out from under out football team and I refuse to support his actions.
Even if Cutler were to remain, what kind of mentality will he be bringing with him? Which leads me to believe that Cutler is worth whatever we can get for him, for the cost of keeping him may cost us more than a mere $1 million. At this point, I'll be glad once he is just gone. Period.

they are doing US a favor
Yes, the media is on Cutler’s side and that is only helping us. If he looks like the victim it helps his trade value. had they made him look like what he really is he wouldn’t be worth as much. so i say: thank you biased media.

Are you kidding me?
Any action that the Broncos take that makes Jay Cutler look bad to the rest of the league is bad for the Broncos. It does not matter who was at fault. Since you’ve already decided to trade him, don’t make him look worse. If you have to trash him do it after you’ve made the trade.
To quote somethign Elway’s Ghost just wrote in your fanshot about the phone records:
And why can’t you see that hurting jay Cutler’s reputation is THE VERY LAST thing any Bronco fan should want right now. Pump him up! Hype him to death!!! Make every team and fan out there think he’s Elway 2.0! Don’t trash his character and then put your hand out and ask for top value in trade. To me, that falls under the “duh” category!

That ignores the need for the Broncos to have "cause" to trade Cutler.
The media will want to know what happened and why the Broncos are now trading Cutler after saying they weren’t going too. There is more to this whole catastrophe than just Cutler’s supposed trade value. I believe that, at this point, Bowlen does not care about trade value as much as maintaining the credibility of his franchise with his own players. The Broncos still on the team need to know that Bowlen and McDaniels did everything they could to placate Cutler short of grovelling. I think our guys will respect that and our team will be stronger for it. Rather than having Bowlen just trade Cutler with no explanation.
I am tired of the Cutler distraction. My concern now is for our franchise and our current players. The front office has every right to begin to focus on that rather than Cutler. Cutler doesn’t want to be a Bronco…
Saving face is very important here…not with the media or even us fans. Saving face to their players! We have 80 some odd guys who are studying the playbook, getting mentally prepared for mid April, and who actually WANT to be Broncos in 2009. We save face and retain our credibility with them by calling Cutler out publicly when he is lying and by trading him rather than grovelling to him. I respect Bowlen for having the courage to do this.

So trade him this week and then save face next week
by MattR on Apr 1, 2009 4:21 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think that would be possible in this case...
hindsight is always 20/20…if we trade Cutler in 3 days then Bowlen should have waited….but he needed to save face before the April workouts.

Trade value goes down a bit, vaule of having him not on the team goes up a bit.
Maybe we get a bit less, but maybe we gain player respect and fewer team chemistry issues. This started as mistakes on both sides, but rests heavily on Cutler’s shoulders now.

Jay's actions lately have spoken volumes for who he is.
I am bummed like the rest of you that it has gotten to this.
I for one bit don’t think his trade value has diminshed and understand why people would think that. However, several team are going to want him and therefore will offer enough so that they can outbid all the other teams.
I just want this done with so the players that want to wear orange and blue (and brown twice) to get ready for the season.

With a cap value of under $2M
Cutler could conceivably be a backup option for teams with an established QB for a couple of years. Players do get injured. San Francisco seemed to do OK when they had Steve Young backing up Joe Montana.

Possible yes
But for what a team will have to give us for him, that’s probably unlikely. Besides, it would have to be a pretty good established QB to start before Jay.

His value wont change
He is coming off a pro bowl. He wants out and is acting like a baby. Denver will get what they want or they wont trade him. Denver holds all the cards not Cutler. So Cutler holds out, bully for him. But he would have to report before the start of week 11 or lose an entire season of service. Pro bowl QB’s on the market dont come along often. But he is acting the fool. Denver in the public view has came out and said they want his bitch ass. Now with him not returning calls and acting like a spoiled brat hurts Cutler on the prospect of a long term deal. Screw him. I dont care. I hope Denver strings this along. The longer this goes on it hurts Cutler more than Denver. I have accepted that Simms is gonna be next years QB so he is learning the system. Cutler is gonna have to learn a new system, no matter where he plays. He better learn that the team, any team, is bigger than the 17-20 individual qb

bing bing bing
His value won’t change in trade values. Teams might try to work us because of it, but the demand will go right back up. Now, what the team will PAY HIM when he restructures is still up for grabs, which is part of why the Cutler camp is still “leaking” info in this mess.
Also, keep in mind that Jay/Bus have a particular destination in mind (coughnewyorkcough). they will need to do some stuff to get the leverage needed to pick the destiantion. Now, i don’t think that kind of leverage is possible, but I’m not seeling Cook short either. i didn’t think he would be able to push Bowlen’s buttons to force a trade either, but ’ol Bus keeps knocking ’em out of the park…

This is a product......
…of our social demand for everything to happen now. We want to know today what Denver will get for Cutler and whether or not what Denver gets for him will work out. 10 years ago stuff like this happened, yet no one worried about it until mini-camp. Why, because it wasn’t out there every day. Had this stayed behind close doors, where it belongs, who knows how messed up this situation would be.
Patience is a virture. Jay Cutler is not hurting the team by not showing up to voluntary meetings and training. He said he will not hold out. Lets hang on to him and make him eat those words. Besides, he has three years left on his contract, if he holds out, he’ll have to hold out for three years and therefore forfeit his salary. His salary was top heavy, so it won’t hurt against the cap. And if the strike happens in 2012 like some people are predicting, what team would want a rocket arm quarterback that hasen’t played a down in 4 years?
Cutler has nothing to gain and everything to lose. I say we hang onto him as long as possible.
