MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #31
|
|
With the #31 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select.... OLB, LARRY ENGLISH, NORTHERN ILLINOIS
|
Arizona Cardinals
Round 1, Pick #31 overall GM Calibroncoboy
|
Details of the pick after the jump...
From the GM Calibroncoboy: After losing Antonio Smith, 3 out of the Cardinals top 4 linebackers are over 30 years old. They need someone to help along side Dansby. Larry English gives them some versaltility as he can play as a 3-4 LB or as a 4-3 DE and can develop along the way. I think that they have no choice but to go defense here because they were 28th in the league in points allowed last year. English is a player who has shown he is durable as he was in 98% of the Huskie's plays last year. He has won many awards such as being the first defensive player to win the Smith Award since the first year of the award in 1982. He averaged over 6 tackles a game. He flashes a quick first step, good strength off the edge and blinding closing speed that abruptly hits the quarterback that has resulted in over 23 sacks over his career. I say the bottom line is that the Cardinals proved that they can get it done on offense and that they could use Larry English as an explosive, strong tackler, to possibly anchor the defense.

ON THE CLOCK Pittsburgh Steelers are up next. Last pick of the first round. We'll need to keep the foot on the gas to make it #48, where the Broncos are picking again. I'm thinking of a little different format going forward, and I have included a poll to get your opinion on it. Vote on what you want to do! The deadline for this pick is NOON MST, April 12th... As long as I receive the pick by that time it will be valid. To send me the pick, just email me at the address shown in my profile. |

Here's the idea for changing things up...
We do an open thread for the second round. People give their opinions for each teams picks, arguing and seeing if a consensus emerges for most teams (it will be wild, and maybe a little confusing, but you guys can handle it). I’ll check in throughout the day and make picks “official” by listing them in the main body of the post.
Then when we get to Denver’s pick I’ll post a poll for the community to vote on that pick.
The next day the Broncos will pick whoever is in the lead, and a new thread for the next batch of picks will go up. We might be able to finish the draft completely, or we might get screwed waaaaay up, but we also might have some fun.
But it is up to you guys.
[Note: if you are one of the current “GMs” and you would rather keep things the way they are, just say so here in the comments. If the majority of the GMs don’t want to change how things are going, then we’ll respect that, even if the poll says otherwise.]
Thanks for everyone’s time on this. Regardless of how it pans out, this Community mock has been fun.

I'm a GM
and I like the open thread idea. That would be insane
I seem to have lost my future self.

Another idea
we could also do a special GM open thread where we could just post our picks in the comments and after we finish you could do a post with the complete draft. We could start it the week after next so that everyone can have time to research prospects in each round and we could keep the thread up until the day before the actual draft. Its a rough idea but I think we could make it work. What do you think styg?

Fun and very informative!
This is the first year I’ve known about MHR and this mock draft has been one of the highlights in terms of learning about the upcoming draft. Thanks again!
My roots are in Denver and my branches in Nebraska.

why dont we have a poll for the other teams as well?
makes it a little more informative and easier to tell who is the consensus pick

True, but
that model would take a while too, as well as a lot of page space. A post witha poll that changes is an option, but you would need a cutoff to decide when to make it official.
I put the question out there since I doubted that too many people really cared what happens for any team but the broncos at this point, except to the extent that it affects who the Broncos end up taking. With enough time, a poll system might be a good way to run the whole draft in the future, and it would certainly be different. It might be worth attempting next year. One drawback is how much of an onus it puts on someone to do a writeup for every pick, since there are no official pickers.
Having an open thread is a bit of a freee for all, and it won’t be a perfect consensus or anything, but there is a good chance that there will be reasonable debates and that the draft will speed up considerably, getting to the “good parts” faster. For some of the teams, maybe only one person will say who they think should be taken, while other teams might get ten divergent opinions. Still others will get ten people agreeing on one person. I don’t know exactly how it will go down, but it places the burden on intelligent debate, which is where MHR shines.
It might be bumpy, especially at first, but I figured that playing to our strengths was worth a shot.

Who did you pick, Jackson?
"Me fail english, that unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum
"Duffman is thrusting in the direction of the problem" - Duffman
"Good, bad, I'm the one with the gun, A-hole" - Ash from Army of Darkness

Let's keep it like it is.
However, I would be in favor of accelerating the deadlines if you’re insistent on getting to 48.
Doing an open thread would probably consume much more time than it saves, because you’re trying to get everybody to get to something of a consensus, while with the current format, only one person makes the pick.

We could probably get to the 48th pick with this format but
wouldn’t it be awesome to finish a whole 7 round community mock draft?!

Larry English...
will be a steal, imho. Because he probably will be an end of the 1st round/early 2nd round pick, as this mock draft pick suggests, and yet I’m very high on him. Broncos probably won’t want to use their 2nd 1st rounder on him, as it’s still pretty high, but I certainly would be happy if they got him with one of their first 3 picks.

Doing an open thread for later rounds is highly plausible.
By that time, you’re operating so much on speculation that the importance of draft order breaks down a bit.
Perhaps you could even batch some picks together in a common thread. Say you’re in the 4th round, for a hypothetical. Open a thread to discuss picks for the first 10 picks. After a while, solidify the picks based on the general tenor of the comments, with the higher picks getting priority over close calls. Then do the next 10 picks. Etc.
That would help focus the discussion to a few teams, which would be much easier to think about, but wouldn’t slow things down too much. Also, if interest wanes toward the end, you don’t lose a whole lot.

thanks dashiell for realizing there was a pick made, lol
i guess it was just over shadowed by the new format topic.thanks styg for double checking!

love the community draft
how about this as a way of carrying on??
two or three volunteers / draftniks get us up to the Broncos 2nd rounder with three or four picks each and then open thread / vote on the players. Then for future rounds rather than picking players, how about picking positions and then either using the comments or the position reviews that were on MHR to decide which player is projected to be available and then selecting them. it would get us to round 7 in 10 days or so.
