Horse Tracks 4/17/09

DP - Finally, actual football is here! Josh McDaniels and the '09 Broncos commence their first mini-camp today. LJones has the details.
DB - Jim Saccomano reminds us to view the 2009 season within its own context, as coaches, players and schemes have all changed - not just for the Broncos, but for many squads.
DB - Brian Dawkins was honored with the Byron White Award, named after the former NFL player and U.S. Supreme Court Justice for his exceptional contributions via community service.
DP - Dawkins' wife Connie accepted the award on his behalf. Meanwhile, guard Scott Young is apparently retiring. Plus, Adam Schefter is leaving the NFL Network for ESPN sometime this summer (he probably got tired of working with guys like Jamie Dukes and Solomon Wilcots).
IN - Jake Plummer thinks Jay Cutler should have stayed in Denver, agrees with the coaching change, and criticizes Mike Shanahan's style of coaching.
NFL - John Madden announced his retirement from broadcasting; he will be replaced on Sunday Night Football by Cris Collinsworth.
DP - The judge in Travis Henry's drug case accepted his plea deal.
SI - The State of Louisiana is trying to incentivize Saints owner Tom Benson to keep the club in New Orleans.
ESPN - RB Larry Johnson's agent says he will attend the Chefs' mini-camp today.
KCS - Scott Pioli talked about the draft yesterday, naturally not revealing much. Here was Kent Babb's take on Pioli's message (sounds a lot like McDaniels).
SDUT - Dolts DE Jamal Williams will be charged with reckless driving rather than drunken driving for a February incident.
SFC - Tom Cable would love to draft an elite offensive tackle this year.
SFC - David White speculates on the possibility of The Crypt Keeper bringing John Madden back to Oakland to help run the show.
NFL - The Lions signed former Raiders WR Ronald Curry and former Cardinals FB Terrelle Smith to one-year deals.
NFL - The Niners agreed to extend the contracts of LB Parys Haralson four years and K Joe Nedney for two more years.
NFL - The Bungles have agreed to a new contract with LB Brandon Johnson.
NFL - In addition to re-signing QB Charlie Batch, the Stillers released RB Gary Russell.
NFL - WR Anquan Boldin now says "change is necessary" in regards to the prospect of being traded. Reportedly, the Ravens, Giants and Jets are among interested teams.
NFL - Panthers GM Marty Hurney thinks Julius Peppers will remain with the team in '09.
NFP - Whoops, missed this one, folks. Robert Boland is ranking the NFL franchises - last week, he started with the middling teams. This time, he looks at the bumbling franchises, leaving the elite organizations for his next installment. Sorry to ruin the suspense, but of course the Broncos will fall into the final category.
Y! - Jason Cole says the Cutler trade was an exception; it's hard to get equal value for players in pre-draft trades.
NFL - Vic Carucci salutes the career of John Madden.
SI - Peter King honors Madden as well.
FOX - Alex Marvez writes about Madden's legacy.
NYT - K.C. Joyner says Madden and his contributions will be missed.
NFP - Matt Bowen thinks the Iggles should trade for Anquan Boldin.
NFP - Bowen also offers his look across the AFC.

Wow
Great read on the owners and franchise rankings. I did laugh a bit at the comment on one of the articles that basically said “The Broncos can’t be a top tier organization because they fired a HoF Head Coach and traded Cutler in a three month span”. While I agree that looking at it in such a broad spectrum portrays a bad image, it’s also a three month time frame when the franchise has been a model of excellence and consistency over the last 15 years or so.
I think we totally deserve to be in the top tier.
Don't you mean
30+ years? 5 losing seasons since 1976. Come on, SDTF! Don’t sell the Broncos short!

Ehhh.
I’m young, still. My first football season that I really REMEMBER was 1994-95. That probably explains why I was so broken up when Shanny was fired. He was really the only coach I ever knew.

Not 30 years for me, either
First Broncos game I watched was The Drive. Like you, I was quite attached to Shanny – sad to see him go, but I understand it now. Reeves’ departure was similar…

Well
DvD+VCR combos often have DvD recorders on them. The conversion isn’t too complicated. Get a combo (They’re pretty cheap now) and some blank DvD-Rs and you’re golden.

You could also
Take it to a shop like Wolf’s or Mike’s Camera- they do that kind of conversion.

Nah
It’s for your personal use, not for broadcasting….

If you record it to a newer medium...
…which you only keep for yourself (and follow the rules about home viewing, private, etc), you’re ok.

To try to explain my love of Shanny
I would have bought a Shanahan jersey if they were on sale. When I met John Elway at a place I’m not allowed to talk about, all I did was grill him about Shanahan. There are few personalities in sports that captivate, but Shanahan and Billy Beane are the two that I just find completely fascinating. I could talk football players with Shanny all day. I seriously miss the guy already.

Gotta love Jake
Never wonder what he is thinking. :-)

I can't stand Jake anymore
All he does now is complain about how hard Shanahan wanted him to work. It’s like the son who resents his dad for life because daddy asked too much. Get over it Jake. Shanahan put you in a position to win despite your lazy work ethic. But you’ll just keep kicking him. Real impressive.

You’d think he’d have a touch more respect for the guy that helped him have the most success he’d ever had at the NFL level. Yeah, he made you work, but you won, right?
I dunno, he just seems bitter about it to me, which I find sad.

His comments are spot-on and to the point. Jake rocks. You can tell he had no love loss for Shanny.
I’m glad he’s doing something that makes him happier now, too.
Whatever his comments on Shanny
separate from those, the important thing is his views on Cutler and McDaniel, and I think they’re right on.
Jake is more of a hippie than ever.
Gotta love the dog and guitar t-shirt (and what are those sunglasses hiding?). lol.
"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

Too bad for Schefter, now he has to listen to idiots like Chris Berman
and Micheal Irving, and other hack journalists like Chris Mortenson.

Thanks for that piece on Jake Plummer! I watched him play and it was great. i wish he’d won a title for you! There has been alot of tossing back and forth with the McJaygate thing and it’s safe to say that we’re all tired of it, but my actual regret for the bronco fans (even though I am a cowboys fan) has two sides: I love the idea that chicago likes having Jay, but 2) I will always wonder what could’ve been between them. Sometimes combustion can ignite the right fire. I know alot of you were probably raised like me, fight for what you believe in and I will always wonder why Jay didn’t try to prove him wrong. Josh may have started it, but Jay finished it and did either one really get what they wanted? Time will tell, but I do believe that their paths will cross again and maybe they will finally get to have that talk they needed to have and maybe they can truthfully move forward. It’s hard being torn for both of these proud franchises because you both are great! I think that they will both probably regret this move…they sold themselves short.
