First Day of mini camp: Some interesting nuggets from Josh McDaniels, Doom and Champ!
Hey Y'All,
SO......finally the start of mini camps, and an interesting interview can be found here with Jedi McD, Doom and Champ with regards to the first day of camp.
Some great nuggets came out of the interview, which leads me, anyway, to question what we really may do in the draft, the feeling among the team and the REAL effect of Jay Cutler being traded.
1/ Josh McDaniels:
- 100% participation by all players with one excused absence....this included Tony Sheffler.
- The competition to be starting QB is TRUE competition. Orton and Simms recieved the same amount of reps.
- McDaniels commented that Chris Simms "is 100%" healthy and is strong.
- Meetings started at 8.30 and the whole team was early and ready to go at 8.25 am.
- Great first day with the teamwork great and everybody excited to be going in one direction.
McDaniels said Peyton Hillis took part in practice today, and is close to fully healed from last season's injury. "He did a lot of things well -- he's a versatile player, so we're going to try to use him in a lot of different roles," McDaniels said. "He carried the ball today, he blocked -- as much as you can block when you're going against air -- and caught the ball well. So he's going to do a lot of things. We really like his skill set and what he can do for us."
- Great news about the Rumblin' Redneck. This really makes me feel good!
- Emphasized competition among ALL positions and no one has been annointed a starter.
- McDaneils saying the schemes will be based around the players strengths and playing to those and him and his coaching staff are evaluating ALL players to evelauate the strengths and weaknesses.
- With regards to drafting a QB in the draft he said there ar "a handful of quarterbacks who could be successful in the league and with the team" and he would take a QB IFthe time was right in draft. He also stated that he does not want to go into training camp with only 2 QB's but he has before. They will not take a QB just to fill a spot but want the QB they take to come in and compete for a "role" in the team.
- Draft BPA in areas of need.
- He left the door open for moving up or down in the draft and for draft day deals.
2/ Champ Bailey:
- Champ VERY happy that Nolan is back as the DC. Nolan was his DC in his rookie year in Washington and he brings passionate and straight shooting to the postion.
- Really happy with the acquisition of Dawkins and having another "vocal leader and player" in the back fied.
- He also emphasised the team first attitude that is purveying at Dove Valley.
- When asked about Cutler Champ said the media blew it up and he was not surprised "to see a guy like that leave".
3/ Elvi Dumervil:
- He also emphasized the energy and excitement in the team.
- The team has one direction and everyone is buying in and moving in the same direction.
- Doom eluded to this team as a "special group".
- Not sure of role yet but he is ready for anything. This comes on the back of thios quote from Jedi:
The head coach also said the fact that the first mini camp was a week before the NFL Draft wasn't just a coincidence. "We want to know the players, we want to get to know them, and if that makes our decision easier or more difficult come draft day, then that's part of the process," he said.
There are some very positive conclusiuons to draw from this first day:
- This is a very united team that is buying into the new regime. It is great to hear HC,and 2 respected veterans like Champ and Doom speak the same thing.
- There is TRUE competition in ALL positions in this team. this makes our team better, hungrier, more united and more motivated. What a great change formthe last 5 years in Denver where the veterans were endangered species and could never lose their jobs. Guys like Nate Webster should have Mike Shanahan and Bob Slowik in his will......he got a better hand out last season than any government could give.
- Peyton Hillis: These comments from Jedi lead me to believe that we are NOT going to get a Knowshon Moreno in the first round. Jedi seemed very high on Peyton and you can see his brain ticking over with regards to how many thing he can do with the Rumblin' Redneck. Peyton could be one of our biggest weapons, so I wont be surprised at all if we take NO RB in the draft.
- McD comes across as focused and VERY prepared. They are set for the draft, have evaluated all positions.
- With regards to quarterback, just from reading between the lines and with what Jedi said, we wont be drafting a QB in the first few rounds. We will take a flier in the later rounds which will give McD another development project. Thats a good thing!
- Universal support from team with regards to coaching staff and FA pick ups. You dont Champ is stoked that he has recived B Dawk AND Nolan in one off season. When one of the greatest ever speaks like this, you know we are heading in the right direction.
- Doom's call of this being a special group is SUPER encouraging. This seems to look to me to be a very tight knit and focused team already. the Cutler drama seems more like a galvanizing situation than a devisive one: the "us vs. the world" mentality. I LOVE IT!
- One of the biggest things I took from Champ's conference (and I suggest everyone watch it to see if you agree with what I saw) was the demeanor he answered the question regarding the trade of Jay Cutler. He seemed pretty over it and not sad at all that Cutler has gone. Listen to his quote and you tell me if this sounds like a player that is worried they lost their QB. Maybe Cutler was not loved in the locker room as much as he thought, and runs in line with same comments that Stefan Fastis mentions in his book. Very strange!
Anyhow, I would love everyones take on this. I know it is only first day, but the interviews and reports out of Dove Valley are making me a very happy fan, and I think this team has a lot more foing for it than the MSM, and even many fans, see.
Peace crew!

Very encouraging...can't wait until the football season starts!!!

Totally agree with you on Champ
That was pretty funny how he said that. I’m very encouraged from watching these interviews. The team looks like it is off to the right start and headed in the right direction. Great coverage Boydy!
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
I saw Coaches PC
and drew the same conclusions. I too am excited. Bring on the draft. The Head Horse and the X-man will probably out do everyones guesses.
Pass the Kool-Aid MC!
My Dad told me about the 4 seasons:
Pre-season
Regular-season
Post-season
Off-season
I have to agree with a few exceptions , did you expect less?
1. Agree, that sounds good
2. Agree, which kind of hints at what I thought all along, this Simms kid was signed for a reason.
3. This kind of reminds me of a previous post, oh ya that’s right when I said pretty much the same thing. (The divorce is final let’s move on)
4. Hmmm prepared this young one seems, but tests he must take before he is to become a Jedi!!!.
5. Did not see this in the same light! He was very specific that he wasn’t just going to fill a hole, no no he said if he was going to draft a QB it would be someone that could compete NOW so we aren’t talking late round projects we are talking early round guys with a specific skill set Hmmmmm “aware of the feelings of this young man I am”.( Sanchez if he is available)
6. Amen
7. One player a tight knit team does not make!!! Doom while showing brilliance at times is Barely a veteran. But I am encouraged by the enthusiasm.
8. Really too much to read into a person as enigmatic as Champ I know you want to believe that everyone is ecstatic or should be that Cutler left but there is are still a pretty good portion of fans that would have liked to see him playing this year in Denver. HMMMMM Your feelings betray you Boydy, remember anger leads to hate and hate leads to pain as Yoda said, I say let the guy go, maybe he was young and immature or maybe things happened behind closed doors we don’t know about and never will. Maybe those things could explain Cutlers actions, but if he was such a baby why isn’t he still crying? He keeps deflecting any questions about the situation and refuses to say anything negative, he even took responsibility in his last interview and said he would have done some things different if he could do it over. That is about as much of an apology as your gonna get. Bottom line is he isn’t here anymore and I am getting a feeling that most fans are getting tired of all the talk about him. I for one will not include his name in any more of my post’s. Anyway all in all nice positive post with a faint hint of La La.

Nice post man....
So you know I think Cutler is talented.
Champs comment spoke volumes if you ask me.
Have a great weekend LWTG!

omg boydy...yaaaaah
like…wow…if Jay was his guy before…not a chance now…he sure doesnt like “that type”…maybe it was what was happening while they were playing together…or maybe in all that stuff that led to THE trade…i dont think Jay is gonna get an invite to the golf tournament or the bbq…rofl
MHR...and proud of it!
Portion of the Fans
Frankly I am not concerned what the fans want or not. Last time I checked the majority of fans don’t know how to run a football team.
Cutler has been classy during interviews and I applaud him for it. Most players in this situation would love to throw some jabs at their former employer.
Clarify
I don’t want anyone to think I am attacking fans. But seriously I don’t want this organization to become like Millen’s Lions where they would parade picks around for the fans to make them happy and then stink the next season. The reverse would make me much happier and that is what I am betting on.
I get that man...
I dont think that has anything to parading picks around.
When the same enthusiasm, mind set and attitude is coming from a HOFer, the HC and one of our talented younger guys, I see this as a positive.
We are not talking rookies here, and comparing the Broncos to the Lions is far off base IMO.
What has Champ to gain by not believing what he is saying?

Don’t misunderstand. I am responding to the idea that lots of the fan base wanted Cutler here. My attitude is that I don’t mind the fan base being upset in the offseason. The Lions under Millen often made decisions in the offseason that made fans happy but never addressed the issues of making a strong team on the field.
I think Champ means exactly what he is saying and it is interesting.
What a Great and Positive report boydy!
Peace Brother!

His comments on Hillis
were about as positive as we could have ever hoped! McD clearly has a good grasp of the kid’s unusual skill set and is looking forward to unleashing the Backwoods Beast! Thrilling!!

You know that Hillis has some fans when he has at least three nicknames...
Hammer Hillis
Rumbling Redneck
Backwoods Beast
Can you guys think of any other names he has? All I can say is: “love me some Hillis”!

I hear ya. We’re seeing some very mature decision making, I believe. I really detest it when those DP dolts keep calling him McKid. McD has been on the sidelines of real football programs since he was a kid — as long or longer than a lot of reporters have had their press creds. What’s it come to, 25 years? He grew up in Canton for chrissakes. Just a gut feeling (based on FACT! lol), but I’m looking forward to him blowing away the cynics with points and wins. Not sure it will be this year, but it’s coming.

Much Appreciated..
Report on Hillis. This was new to me and great news! Thanks Boydy!
"There is TRUE competition in ALL positions in this team"
Disagree a little. There is NO competition at LT, and essentially none at RT. Lots at QB, but I do expect Orton to be under center when the real season starts. If Simms outpalys Orton, so much better for the Broncos.
As far as taking a QB to fill a “role” – that role could easily be developmental. but why are they bringing Sanchez in? Maybe just as a red herring to throw off the teams with the first 11 picks (Shanahan used to do that).
Growing older is not for sissies. Jack Palance
Agree Bradley.....
I see where you are coming from at tackle. To be honest, Clady is our All Star, start as long as you want type guy.
There are MANY roles on the team for a 3rd QB….even on game day the 3rd QB could be holder, so it is refreshing that EVERY guy on the team will be expected to fill and carry out their role professionally.
Thanks man!

ummmmm...maybe
Jedi has shown he sees things lots different than Mike did…who knows what he is seeing in the o-line…just sayin
MHR...and proud of it!
Of course there is no doubt who will start at many positions.
But the attitude of the coach (especially a new one) before training camp should be that everyone has a shot for their position so that he can see evaluate his talent with open eyes. The reallity is that NOBODY can beat out Clady, but its great McDaniels is staying open to all the talent he has. We don’t want another Nate Webster situation.
"My job description is to win football games. I'm a hard worker. I'm not flashy by any means, but my job is to play football and win and I plan to do that." Kyle Orton
There is competition...
The point is that there is competition at every position. If someone came in and played better than Clady, does anyone truly doubt that McD would play the better player? I used to coach wrestling and I had an idea coming in to the season who my starter would be at each weight. But if a freshman came in and beat the starter, he would take his place, regardless of what I expected. Same thing here. Is Clady gonna get beat out.?..no way in Hell. But the competition is there…
Great way of looking at it Jeff!

Champ Bailey
That was a pretty damning comment by Champ Bailey about Jay Cutler. It kind of brings a new light to the situation for me since I respect Champ so much. That’s both Champ and Brandon that have been either glad that Jay’s gone (Champ) or apathetic about it (Brandon)
