Top 10 Reasons the Broncos Shouldn't Draft a QB in the First Round this Year
Now that we know what we will be going into the draft with, I hear a lot of calls to draft Mark Sanchez or Josh Freeman. I don't agree with this. Here are my 10 reasons they shouldn't, in no particular order.
- Kyle Orton isn't as bad as we all think. His rating last year was 79.6. Cutler's was only 86.
- Brain Urlacher thinks that Kyle Orton is a good QB and Teammate: " "But I will say this: I think Kyle Orton is a good quarterback. He's a great teammate. I hope he does really well in Denver"
- Tom Brady was once a limp armed skinny QB (although no neck beard)
- Broncos didn't go to USC's pro day. Why pick a player you're not excited about.
- The QB class next year should be once in a life time. Bradford, Tebow, and McCoy should come out.
- The Broncos have 2 picks in the first round next year and probability says that one of them will be in the top 10 because we have a tough schedule this year.
- If we don't have a high pick next year, that means Orton or Simms was a success, so stick with 'em. They're young.
- Matt Cassel. I know it's been said a lot, but it's still incredible: McD won 11 games with Cassel. At least we've heard of Orton. I think McD needs a chance to see what he could do with him.
- We have the rare chance to build up our front 7 with both a DT/DE and a LB from the first round. Don't waste a pick on offense.
- Kyle Orton was never loved in Chicago and knows he has to prove himself to Denver. That's a mighty big chip on his shoulder. Plus he has Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokely, and Brandon Marshall to throw to.
Feel free to add more reasons why we should or shouldn't draft a QB in the first round in the comments below.
Thanks for reading.

i want McCoy or Bradford!
but im curious to see orton and simms battle it out for the starting job. man i hate qb controversies
24-24 doesn't win championships
please excuse my ignorance
but is there another qb named bradford still playing college ball? sam bradford is certainly going in the first round this year.
help enlighten me.
Sam Bradford will be playing for Oklahoma in 2009
Mathew Stafford is the projected to QB. I get these 2 mixed up all the time for some reason. The names aren’t even that close.
Did we just trade a future Hall of Famer or did we just get a King's ransom for a head case? Time will tell.
Any of those three next year,
ixnay on drafting one this year. I think it will be fun to watch Simms and Orton duke it out.
I agree no need to draft a QB this year, simple reason
All the QB’s in the 1st round suck, and get progressively worse.

My take-away...
the Broncos have eliminated 80% of player ego from this team. The remaining 20% I leave for BMarsh, but he’s got enough troubles of his own to not bitch too much. If we’re going to truly build a “team-first” approach, they’ve clearly laid the ground work with the Cutler trade.

It would be madness of the first degree to pick ANY of the QBs in this year’s draft, unless we really wanted to take a wild shot and grab Pat White for a 5-year project (but only if he is 4th round or later).
Even then, it would make things null and void if what I really want to see happen, happens: Bradford or McCoy is drafted by us next year. Tebow’s even intriguing, especially since he’s a team-first player and the definition of a Boy Scout on the field and off— the former fits with the Patriot Way and the latter with the new look of the Broncos as a team. But that would require cahones of brass from McXanders only one year after the Cutler saga.
Orton was by no means a poor player, and Simms is a bit of an unknown quantity after coming back from his injury and never really being given a true chance in Tampa— certainly not with the supporting cast he’s got here. I think this is a great situation for us to be in to wait until next year without giving up on this year.
"3rd and 6, Elway shotgun... Elway, scrambling, looking, running-- DIVING!!!-- inside the 5 yard line for a first down! Is he only 37?! How important is this football game? How bad does John Elway want to win this football game? Where you see the quarterbacks go down: Not Elway!"

Love this post couldnt agree more....
This trade has the chance to be what the Hershel Walker trade was to the 90’s Cowboys…. Think about this: what if we parlay two of the first round picks into more picks much like the patriots have done by trading down and grabbing more value. In fact there is that possibility this year for us to trade down and still get a Matthews Jr. or a Cushing… Also I dont think people are giving McD enough credit with the QB situation he obviously has a long term plan whether is a late round guy this year or waiting out Cassel next off season… Everyone also needs to take a step back from the bears going to the superbowl… i mean no offensive weapons and a weak online combined with an aging Defense that is over-rated we might just have a top ten pick from them next year….. maybe i am just drinking heavily but I think if the right moves our franchise will be just fine
no...he tortures dogs
not exactly high character.

I'm going to give Vick the benefit of the doubt.
I really think it was more of a cultural thing with him. While he knew what he was doing was wrong, it probably didn’t sink in how serious an offense it was until that cell door shut the first time. The fact is, he isn’t the only one in the NFL that was fighting dogs, but he was the highest profile player/person fighting dogs. I think Vick is probably a genuinely pretty good guy and I would be willing to take a chance on him. Although he and Tebow, to me, aren’t much at the QB position. I say we give Vick a chance just so he can run the wildcat for us.
Did we just trade a future Hall of Famer or did we just get a King's ransom for a head case? Time will tell.
i say yes
lets give him a one year contract that is pretty much all incentives. hes not going to get a great deal anywhere i think, hes probably looking at an incentive-heavy contract. if McD can figure out how to use him effectively, look out
I think this is Bowlens plan in action.
with Cutler here, we’d be set at QB for the next 10 years, and Bowlen doesn’t want that. He wants to draft a QB in 4 years. So we’ll stick around with Simms and Orton until we draft Jack Elway.
Ok, in all seriousness, do any of you think there could be another deal being worked out where we trade Orton and a pick somewhere for someone?
Also, with our situation, I’d love to see us use our 2 first rounders for 1 defensive stud and 1 offensive stud, like maybe Raji (or insert stuf Defensive player of choice) and Moreno… How sweet would that be. ;)

Read in the fanshots
Raji tested positive at the combine and positve for marijuana during his college days—-NO WAY do we want him, we need these draft picks to work out nicely for us

Why?
McDaniels has been famous for a ball control passing offense. Vick has poor skills in that. Vick likes to run a lot, NE did use some QB runs, but usually when Cassel was running for his life (poor O line blocking). Leaving out the issue of character and the issue of working within a team before player concept, why would they want Vick?

If Sanchez falls to 18?
I’d think a long time about taking him there.
PS, No way Michael Vick comes close to signing with the Broncos, y’all are high thinking that.
Owning the Patriots since September 9, 1960
Reason #11
Because multiple sources have confirmed that this year’s draft class does not have first round QB draft quality.

I agree, no QB this year.
There isn’t a QB in this years draft that I would feel comfortable with taking in the first round, and Coach McDiapers thinks he can win with any stiff that comes along provided he doesn’t have a rocket arm or any athletic ability.
The best thing for the Broncos would be for them to completely tank it this year (and they will) then fire McDiapers, hire a real coach (Gary Kubiak might be available) and then draft a good QB next year. (Tim Tebow?)
Anybody that suggests tanking a season has no credibility as even a halfway intelligent person!!!

Cassel
Everybody wants to say he played one year. Uh, he played three years for McDaniels .
