DP - Klis examines the possibility of drafting B.J. Raji and/or Tyson Jackson. Mike Mayock interestingly says, "What the Patriots have done better than 90 percent of the teams is they define value for them. They don't really care what other people think, they define players that are going to help them within their scheme." So, why did you keep ranting and raving about the Broncos trading Cutler and having to draft Mark Sanchez??

RE: Wes Bunting....
Wes says our current front 3 would be Reid, Peterson, and Fields. Though I want to have faith in these guys, is there anyone who doesn’t believe we need a significant upgrade there? Tyson Jackson’s improved stock may be a draft smokescreen but it may not. I would be disappointed in our draft if we don’t walk away with either Raji or Jackson. I’m not sure what people are smoking when they disagree with me on this point.
It’s shocking how many people are touting Moreno or Jenkins while our defensive front 3 are backup talents. Does anyone have any idea how much pressure will be on our LB’s and DB’s, not to mention our offense, if our front 3 can’t hold the point of attack? We should do what it takes to land at least Raji or Jackson.
Upgrade D-line
Don’t disagree that we need to upgrade here on Saturday, but not sure about doing “what it takes.” First off, I think Bunting is wrong: if McD had to put ‘em on the field tomorrow, I suspect we would see Thomas at DE, not Reid. And there is a chance (tho slim) that Powell works his way ahead of Peterson in training camp. Still not world class, but not as bad as Bunting makes it out to be. Second, how far up are are saying we should move? Let’s assume Pioli buys the Jackson hype and takes him at 3 as a couple of mocks have KC doing. Do we need to move up to 4 to keep the Browns from taking Raji at 5? I think we give up too much to do that, particularly since there are other potential NTs we can get rounds 2 – 4. So while I agree we need to upgrade the D front 7, and I think Jackson and/or Raji would help a bunch, can’t buy doing “what it takes” to get it done without knowing what that means.
Context is everything
For you the context of “need” on our front three (as defined: all backups, which seems a bit harsh, but could be called a ‘conservative’ approach) leads you to an absolute: take raji and/or jackson, arguably the best NT/DE options in the draft.
I agree that “need” is a valid context, and I certainly could harbor the idea that raji and Jackson are the best respective options at NT and DE. So why don’t I agree that taking one or both of them is an absolute?
Because I think there are many more, equally important, contextual considerations to include. For example, draft picks are a key currency in team-building economics…getting a high value per pick is a good long term goal, and is fiscally responsible. Add that layer to the discussion and both raji and Jackson are low value picks at either #12 or #18. Trading up for either is the equivalent of buying lottery tickets…bad financial decision, but fun.
Current roster evaluation is another context. Despite our “need” for an experienced NT and 34DE, we have several talented players like Powell and Thomas who have yet to be evaluated (by us as fans) playing those positions. Add this layer to the discussion and there is a legitimate risk of reducing the value ratio of an already reduced set of picks.
What about the scheme context? We still don’t know whether we are a 1 or 2 gap system, and if anything, signs point to one gap. Neither Raji nor Jackson are ideal for both (and Jackson isn’t really ideal for either. He is simply an experienced 5-technique, but not terribly great at it. Frankly, I don’t see why people want to overestimate his value from the late second round. That is where he rated when college games were done being played in 2008, it is probably where he should have stayed on people’s boards. As always, fascination with the measurables appears to have trumped film, which is unfortunate.)
Obviously I don’t think either player is an absolute “must have” pick. Would they be good picks? Yes. Are they the best possible picks? That will depend entirely on who is available when Denver picks at #12.

Uh....Jackson's measurables were not good...
He ran a slow 40 and only did 20 reps. He is not a combine stud. The guy plays a position that only few can play and he is solid.
I was thinking his height and weight in particular....

Morning NYC and thanks again.
The Jaguars “new uni” cracks me up. Logo looks almost exactly the same to my eyes. And glitter in the helmet???? Maybe you gotta be there. ^^

I can't wait for the throwbacks!
I kinda want a replica as well! Of course, I say that, and everyone says “but they’re HIDEOUS!” To which I reply…“Yes, they are hideous. And I love it!”
To me, there are two kinds of ugly. There’s the “we tried to make it awesome and cool and wonderful…but we failed, so it looks like crap.” Then there’s the “well, it’s ugly, so we’re not going to try to hide it. It’s just plain UGLY.”
Take, for example, the HUMVEE. It’s ugly. VERY ugly. But it is unabashedly ugly, it doesn’t try to hide it’s ugliness. So I love it.
Then there are the new Hummers. They are the HUMVEE, but trying to make it look more stylish. That doesn’t work for me. I think they’re ugly.
My only request for the throwback nights: bring in some extra mud for the field. :o)

Somebody should clue the Jags and Lions
into the definition of “redesign”.

I HATE the new unis.
The weak college yoke stripe tilde thing, the loss of the goldness, the monotony. I thought their old set was one of the best in football, but the new one is depressing. I can hardly watch hockey anymore because of all the retarded uniform designs, and it’s gotten worse now that I’ve switched to HD (Although I have to say, you have not lived until you have seen a Barry Melrose suit in HD.) That’s what the NFL is becoming, a corporate hell for Reebok to push new products in order to sell more stuff.
And the sparkly helmet is the gayest thing I have ever seen on a football field.
I can only hope that the benevolent teams of the AFC West (the ones that have identities, a la anyone that isn’t the Chargers) will stick to their guns. Which means, I want the Chefs and raiders to stick with what they’ve got and the Broncos to revert back to the orange. Sadly, that doesn’t seem to be likely.
Is it bad that I’m more upset over this than I was about Shanny’s firing?
I seem to have lost my future self.
I though it was funny also
Their Logo looked the exact same to me. Do they know the defintion of change/redesign lol

New England Ad Nauseum
Horsetracks is wonderful to read every morning. Of course, the mention of Maylock and Klis and the Patriot Way got me going.
Everyone can drink the beverage of their choice, but my year would be complete if I don’t read another article about the New England Way on a site connected with the Broncos. These things go in cycles. Remember, the Broncs, the Chiefs, the Chargers and, even the Raiders, have all had their moments or eras. At one time, the hot spot was San Francisco.
I agree with the idea that you can get lots of value from later rounds, that filling up a roster with overpaid underachievers is not smart, nor is paying double retail for unproven high round draft choices.
What the Broncs need is to use the draft judiciously, get high quality players, coach the heck out of them, and reward those who are successful sooner rather than later so that their free agent cost does not go through the roof.
Should be interesting to see how the draft goes and then the initial training camp and early results. We better get off to another quick start, the cupcake part of the schedule is early this year.
I hope we can enjoy building the new Denver team with our own style and the next brilliant football business model, not the last.

Concur
Not so much because I hate the “Patriot Way”, but because the “Patriot Way” is really just “The Way You Run A Football Team” and NOT completely unique to the Patriots. Sure, there are some variations, but drafting well, coaching well, and using players in ways that maximize their talents isn’t exactly a ground-breaking development. The Colts do it, the Steelers do it, the Giants have been doing it recently, Baltimore has been pretty good…it just works!
We’ll probably keep hearing the Pats through training camp, and (hopefully) to a lesser extent through the year (remember to throw a SOFT object at the TV when that happens). But that will pass as it becomes apparent that Denver is Denver, with its own identity and style.

Great point

Good Advice!
Well spoken, Disco_Stu. I am trying to get beyond the off-season stuff and give the new crowd a chance, but I do want to see a distinctly Bronco identity come out of it. Not just New England, but Denver has been very good through the years of taking some low round draft picks or free agents and turning them into players- Rod Smith, Shannon Sharpe, Tom Nalen and several of last year’s players come to mind. I agree that Baltimore has done a good job since the Ravens were born (and got beyond the not so successful Belichik Cleveland coaching era).
But, I fear you are correct, it will be all Patriot West through training camp and until we play them…..
and I appreciate the advice about a soft object to throw at the TV, but what to do about the never-ending newspaper and internet columns?

Stafford
Anyone else think he’s this year’s Alex Smith? If he goes #1, he’s partially being picked because he’s considered the top QB for a team that desperately needs a QB. But he’s not the best player available. In short, like SF a few years ago, they are kind of unlucky to be picking #1 in a year where there’s no consensus #1 guy and the top QBs all have question marks.
On the other hand, he could be great. For the Lions sake I hope I’m wrong.
But to counter myself
despite things he needs to improve on, I think Stafford will be more successful than Smith. He’s going to be solid but not a franchise.
NFL Network
reporting that Washington seems the most smitten with Mark Sanchez and most likely to try to get him. (Which would make Jason Campbell available for a trade. Making it much more likely for Campbell to go all Cutler on the Redskins.) But they also admit all this could be smoke screens before the draft so who knows.
Josh McDaniel's birthday report
Odd teaser just now on NFL Network: “When we come back we’ll discuss what to get one of the youngest coaches in NFL history, Josh McDaniels, for his birthday.” I swear to God.
I’m going to get back to work. If someone else catches this feel free to fill us in on that amazingness. ;-)
I hope this is ok to post here - For Sale
If it’s not ok mods, please delete.
I am selling my Champ Bailey replica jersey, I figured I’d try to sell it to someone here before I put it up on Ebay. My wife bought it for me 2 Christmases ago, but it’s way to big (she didn’t realize that the sizes are basically one up from normal sizes). Because of that, I’ve only worn it about 5 times, it’s in great shape. Size is L, which means if you wear an XL in regular clothes, this will fit you. (I’m 5 11 and 175 and it’s too big). I’ll send pictures if anyone is interested. I think you can email me from my profile.
I think she paid $80 for it new, I’ll take $35 including shipping.
Thanks
