At Dawn
I hate to overstate it, but this weekend will be a watershed moment for the Denver Broncos. With the exit of Mike Shanahan, Jay Cutler, and the Goodmans, and the entrance of Josh McDanials and Brian Xanders, our proud franchise hangs in the balance. Are we at the dawn of Pat Bowlen's golden era, where a draft-rebuilt, balanced team competes for Super Bowls year-in year-out over the next decade, or did we just trade away the cornerstone of the franchise for nothing but a few oppressive contracts that will render us AFC West bottom feeders for the decade to come?
This question is enough to keep most of us diehard fans awake tonight. Making the question far more nerve-racking, we do not really know what to expect from the two-headed monster that is McXanials. We know they have chutzpah. This pair has a pair. Other guys may have sat down with their petulant "franchise" QB and appeased away, "we love you Jay... we owed it to the franchise to pick up the phone... plus, I had a relationship there, you must understand... bring that world-class arm of yours to the workouts next week and we'll get started on winning Super Bowls... okay champ?". Instead these guys sat down and basically said, "we're sorry if we hurt your feelings, but nobody's above the team and we expect you to be at the workouts next week."
This brash, bold attitude is why rumors of trading precious, team-building picks away to nab a guy like Sanchez has Bronco's Country biting its collective nails. Like I said, there are folks that will lose sleep tonight because of it. However, I will sleep just fine tonight and here are a few reasons why:
- Although some find it to be disturbing, I find it comforting that our new coach hails from New England. Especially when it relates to the draft. Josh McDanials was in the war room year after year soaking up a NE draft philosophy that has resulted in numerous "home run" first round picks, especially front seven guys. Guys like Richard Seymore, Ty Warren, Vince Wilfork, and Jarod Mayo are flat-out studs.
- McDanials and Xanders have a plan. From his very first interview, the coach has repeatedly said that he wants to fill a team with smart, tough, well-conditioned players who perform well under pressure. Relating specifically to the draft, McDanials has said they will draft the best player available at positions of need. Drafting the smartest, toughest, best-conditioned gamers where we need help sounds like a good strategy to me. Plus, this strategy implies moving away from drafting based on 40 times and vertical leaps.
- Based on the interviews that I have taken in, McDanials strikes me as a bright, hard working, confident leader. I'm sure that's what Mr. Bowlen saw during the interview process as well.
- Mike Shanahan is not running the show. I don't want to beat a dead horse here and I absolutely love and respect the guy, but his legacy on drafting first round difference makers is well documented (especially on defense).
So at the dawn of an uncertain era, I take solace that we have a bright, fresh-faced leader who comes from an extremely successful draft room, who has a strategy, and has put in the work and has the confidence necessary to execute the strategy. Even if something crazy goes down tomorrow--and it will-- I will patient and hopeful that the best decision was made. In fact, the only thing that will surprise me this weekend is if our draft looks anything similar to the mock draft echo chamber I've succumbed to over the past month.
When it does happen-- i.e., say we draft Sanchez (gasp), or a guy like Percy Harvin in the first, or someone other than Chung, Lugis, Delmas, or Brace @48--Cutler's chicken littles and our lovable resident curmudgeons are going to enter this public forum and declare the draft a failure and demand McDanials' and Xanders' heads on pikes outside dove valley. I will remind these folks of one of my first experiences here at MHR, last year's draft open threads. The bedlam that followed Eddie Royal's selection was unreal. OMG, how do you draft an unknown KR when Dan Connor is on the board???1!!?1!!! Dannn freakin Connorrrr!!/1>!!
I guess my point is, the draft is a crap shoot. All we can really ask for as fans is that our front office personnel make well informed decisions that are in line with a comprehensive, competent set of team goals. I, for one, am confident that we are in good hands. So, get some sleep tonight Bronco fans and wake up tomorrow ready to usher in the dawn of a new era of Broncos dominance.
GO BRONCOS!!

Draft
Well put BB. I like you am actually excited and optimistic for a new direction. We all know that the draft really can’t be judged for another few years, but good leaders have clear vision and I think McD fits the mold.
Seriously!
But who can blame any of us. Who among us was like, “Eddie Royal? Sweet!”… Nobody knew what we had until training camp at the earliest, and it wasn’t really until the first game against Oakland that we all became believers.
Actually typing that at this moment makes me realize that I read somewhere that we’d have the verdict on B-Marsh prior to the draft… Here we are and there’s nothing yet reported…. When is it safe to assume that he’s in the clear?
Brandon Marshall
Well no news is good news. I have to think it would have come down before the draft to allow for different selections, but Goodell is such a knucklehead who know!
+1
In general I think no news is good news, BUT Goodell may not rule until after just to be a jerk to the organization…He wants the teams to be the driving force in his policy and following…I’m sure he’d rather the whole team get penalized instead of just the player. It is the same reason in boot camp that you make the whole group march when one guy messes up.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
Right, nobody knew.
That’s the point I was trying to make— nobody knows how draft picks will pan out so it doesn’t really make sense to freak out either way as it happens. All we can do is hope for the best, and I think we’re in good hands. At the very least we have new people in charge that don’t have an abysmal record, they don’t really have a record, but at least it’s not terrible! :)
As for BMarsh… I’m very concerend, which is why taking a receiver in the first or second round wouldn’t be a huge suprise. If that happens, I think we can all assume Goodell notified the club through backchannels that there was some serious trouble.
"Talking tough is easy when it's other people's evil and you're judging what they do or don't believe. It seems to me you'd have to have a hole you're own to point a finger at somebody else's sheet" -- Mike Cooley
No news...
is good news…. B Marsh has kept his nose clean.
Did some digging and found what I read. USA TODAY – April 12, 2009
Every day that goes by without a suspension for Brandon Marshall could be good news for Broncos fans.
Mike Klis in the Denver Post reasons that if commissioner Roger Goodell plans to hand down stiff discipline for the Broncos receiver, he would do so well in advance of the April 25 draft to allow the team to draft some backup help.
Marshall was arrested after an incident with his fiance last month, but no charges were pursued. Because Marshall served a one-game suspension last year for a violation of the personal-conduct policy, he still faced discipline from the league.
The Post suggests that if Marshall were to receive a lengthy suspension for eight games, Goodell would alert him and the team now. (Bills running back Marshawn Lynch was suspended last week for three games.)
Makes sense… Especially now…

I've been thinking that quietly myself over the past few days
Was just afraid to jinx it by saying anything. lol
But given that we are now on the eve of one of the biggest drafts in team history, and Goodell thusly occupied, I’m liking B Marsh’s chances of grazing a bullet on this one. Sure hope so. I’d hate to lose him, even during the “cupcake” openers.

I was like
Eddie Royal Sweet. I wanted the Broncos to draft him really bad. I thought he was the most underrated WR in the draft last year and I was right

awesome comments BB
I totally agree that the draft is a roll of the dice. And I’m in agreement with your assessment of Coach McD. Let’s give the guy a chance and not judge him until after he wins his first Super Bowl (yes, I do my best to live in La La Land most of the time).
Excellent points
I think the draft needs to be judged in two stages:
1) Whether the team got good value for their picks on draft day. Regardless of position and team needs. Did they reach for a guy at a need position, ala Jarvis Moss, Paul Toviessi, Terry Peirce, or did they get a sleeper using BPA, ala Tony Scheffler & Eddie Royal. This is a reflection of the FO & scouts.
2) In two or three years, depending upon the position (except RB they’re year 1 contributors) did the prospects develop into at least solid NFL players. This is more of a reflection of the coaching staff.
Last few years we’ve seen coaches like Jacob Bruney, be given 11 DL prospects during his time here, only to see one prospect (Doom) amount to anything. It is my hope the new defensive staff, especially Nunnely, can actually develop prospects. This is where draft success is determine, not on draft day.
We as fans really can’t pass judgment on a drafted player until we’ve seen them play and their development. Its not like any of us have access to the War Room, the staffs minds or the scout reports & interviews.
Unfortunately, we all know that won’t happen.

I still...
Think it was absolutly hilarious that the commish had to rescue him from Dion Sanders on the NFL Network broadcast. Dion was like sitting in his lap, “How does it feel Brady? How does it feel to have your mama here and drop down so low in the draft, Brady? How does it feel?” Dion was so close to Brady he could have licked his ear. Hilarious!

Nice job Butte...
Howdy neighbor. I’ll sleep good tonight even though I will (like many others) be excited and anxious for our team to rise up to the occasion. Many will be surprised, and many will be disappointed that the player of their hopes was not taken, but these boys running the show now know exactly what they are doing when we see their actions (let the guy play) speak for themselves. The coach playing db in a drill, and saying those words where everyone in the buildiing heard it, speak volumes within itself.

I love a glass half full guy...
your post sounded like me at the start and ended up sounding like you had starting drinking some of Mike C’s Kool-aid, bottom line is you gotta have faith. But not blind faith!!! In a way this will be a watershed moment for HCMcD and his staff and in another it will be his first draft of at least three, I just don’t see Mr. Bowlen pulling the plug on HCMcD until at least three years to give him time to prove himself and his methods. That said this draft will be a watershed for wooing the fans that haven’t gotten on board yet, the skeptical majority that are still waiting for HCMcD to be everything that he is promised to be. I say the longer I read and post on MHR the more of that euphoric feeling I feel, “HEY Mike pass me another glass” and the more I believe that things are changing and for the good!!! At any rate I liked your post, and I will recommend that other fans read it as well!!!

I can't wait until the draft and for the open threads...Whatever we do tomorrow,
I’m sure we’ll be fine. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Great, great thread, Big Sky bro!
Even if something crazy goes down tomorrow—and it will— I will [be] patient and hopeful that the best decision was made. In fact, the only thing that will surprise me this weekend is if our draft looks anything similar to the mock draft echo chamber I’ve succumbed to over the past month.
That’s exactly how I feel from my little war room over here in Bozeman. I’m steeling myself for all the detractors to emerge and start picking apart McX’s first drafts without really knowing why they valued those selections at those picks, being that we haven’t really unveiled our team’s new identity yet (other than McD’s early assertions which remind me distinctly of the always amusing adage that to win, we need to score a lotta points and keep the other team from scoring. lol)
Patience. It won’t be easy, but I’m gonna force myself to have it this year, all year, and into next. We’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of big time play from rookies in recent history. Don’t know if that’s the league-wide norm or not (I’m curious how the hit/bust ratio trends over the last decade), but let’s hope for the team’s sake that we just get some guys who will be accountable, bring some fire, and love to play football for the Denver Broncos.

Great points BB; agreed and rec'd
People forget the natural progression of draft day.
1) The team likley makes several picks that few people saw coming.
2) Fans are flabbergasted!
3) On further reflection (about 3 or 4 days after the draft) folks research the new players, and find that they were great picks all along.
4) When camp rolls around, reports on the rookies are steller (for the most part).
5) Everyone now thinks the draft went great.
One thing to keep in mind: for all of the sleep we have all lost trying to mock and analyze the draft, the pros in the war room have done several hundred more times worth of effort and research. I’m prepared to give my opinions tomorrow, but in the context that I trust the coaching / management staff to know more about what’s going on behind closed doors than I do.
When I coached at the HS level, locals sometimes questioned a decision we made as a staff. We had the advantage of years of coaching, an (always) winning program, up front and personal insights into what was “really” going on in the locker room, at practice, and in the private lives of the players. But there were always folks that seemed to “know better” than we did.
Now I’m on the fan side of things. I’m going to question some decisions, but always with the respect that goes with knowing the team’s coaches really do know more than I do.
Great job BB!

I’ve never coached a game in my life and I’m absolutely CERTAIN I know more than Matt Millen!
(Joking! Joking!!!)
So it will be interesting, as the names are called and scrolled across the lower third of our screens, to begin the analysis of why each player was chosen, what did we overlook earlier, and what does it all tell us about our future? Draftivus notwithstanding, mining the details to reverse engineer the character of a team we haven’t even seen yet my favorite part of the draft!

I have faith in McDaniels and Co
Also do not forget that McDaniels has Mike Nolan on his staff. Nolan has been in this league for a long time and knows a good player when he sees one, well except for Alex Smith. I am sure Nolan is in the war room and his opinion is valued by McDaniels. I am really looking forward to the draft.
Going to watch the Nuggets game in the Morning and then Flip it over to the Draft. Sounds like a good day to me
