Draftivus Friday ST&NO
Welcome to a very special Draftivus Friday version of Shallow Thoughts & Nearsighted Observations, which I publish at the risk of over-saturating the market of those two commodities. Included is my Soup-To-Chocolate-Cake 7-Round Mock Draft, as promised. Ready..... BEGIN.
1. My draft bunker is shaping up nicely, and I plan to spend nearly all of the next two days posted up in the left recliner. MHR's draft coverage plan looks terrific, and I have a feeling that it will be unparallelled, in the final analysis. From Guru's presence in the press area at
2. It is starting to look like both BJ Raji and Tyson Jackson will be gone by the time the 12th pick rolls around. Or is it? I was thinking about this on my train ride home today, and I am feeling better that one of them may get there.
Consider this. There are two QBs (
In the mock which follows, I decided that Peria Jerry sounded like a good fit at #18, as a 5-technique conversion, and a pass-rusher in a 4 man front. I just can't get past the idea that both #1s need to be defensive linemen.
3.. As promised, there is soup, and there is chocolate cake, and there is everything in between.
4.That means my Broncos 7 Round Mock Draft is:
| Pick | Team | Player | Position | School |
| 12 | Denver Broncos | BJ Raji | NT | Boston College |
| 18 | Denver Broncos | Peria Jerry | DT | Ole Miss |
| 16(48) | Denver Broncos | Paul Kruger | DE/OLB | Utah |
| 15(79) | Denver Broncos | Derrick Williams | WR/KR | Penn State |
| 20(84) | Denver Broncos | Jasper Brinkley | ILB | South Carolina |
| 14(114) | Denver Broncos | Chris Clemons | S | Clemson |
| 13(149) | Denver Broncos | Jonathan Luigs | C | Arkansas |
| 12(185) | Denver Broncos | Tom Brandstater | QB | Fresno State |
| 16(225) | Denver Broncos | Ryan Purvis | TE | Boston College |
| 26(235) | Denver Broncos | Kehstahn Moore | RB | Florida |
a. I think Raji may last until #12, and would be the no-brainer choice at that spot.
b. I mentioned Jerry. He was a 300 pound quick, penetrating DT in a 40 front in college. I would rather take a DT here than an edge guy, because I think there is less drop-off in quality between the 1st and 2nd round edge guys than there is at DT/34DE.
c. I'm a big Paul Kruger fan. He's relentless and tough, and really gets after the QB.
d. You might think Derrick Williams doesn't fit a need, but I'd rather not see Eddie Royal returning many kicks. I think Williams is a good value in the 3rd round, and is a useful player on a winning team.
e. Jasper Brinkley is a thumper inside, and the 3rd round is the right range for him. He was banged up as a senior, but dominant as a junior.
f. Chris Clemons is a name which hasn't been bandied about this site very much, but he is a talent. He runs 4.38 in the 40 as a FS, and can match up with slot receivers. I think he's not ready to play Day 1, but with a year on special teams, he could contribute on defense.
g. Jonathan Luigs is a little undersized for most blocking schemes, but I think he can anchor well enough to pass-protect. He was outstanding in college, and he's worth a look in the seventh round.
h. Tom Brandstater strikes me as a McDaniels type of QB. I was playing a hunch here.
i. Ryan Purvis is a good blocker and receiver, and a good value as a late-round TE.
j. Kehstahn Moore is a versatile backup RB/special teams player. He played teams at Florida, like most of their best players do.
5. You know what irritates me? Sportswriter cliches. I was reading Peter Schrager's 7-round mock, which I give him credit for doing, because I now realize that it's a project and a half. I found out from Schrager that Tyson Jackson has been giving SEC linemen fits. Really? Like epileptic seizures, or what?
I was taught as a young man that great writers can write it like they speak it. It's sort of like how Method Man speaks just like he raps. The voice is obviously real. Could you see somebody using that "giving fits" cliche in conversational speech? Or using the word "scribe" instead of writer?
Writers ought to ask a question. Is what I am writing something that sports readers are used to seeing in print? If the answer is yes, then you should spike the sentence, and come up with something better.
6. As I write this, I am watching a Mets game, because I am longtime fan. I was just thinking how Carlos Beltran was a big-money free agent signing who has worked out well in every way. He struggled his first season, but he's been very good the last 3. I hope the signings of Dawkins and Goodman work out so well.
7. Retired for John Elway.
8. I think I am going to try out the NFL Network tomorrow. The only attraction of ESPN now is the chance that Mel Kiper might lose it, and finally curse out Todd "Toddy-Come-Lately" McShay. Now the NFLN has a chance to not irritate me just as much.
We'll see you tomorrow, for the biggest day in MHR history. Get fired up!!!

nice job but man where is this DHB love coming from
The highest I have heard out there is about 15 or 16, everyone has Al taking Maclin, but I guess he did run a lot better at the combine (4.3 vs 4.5).
I LOVE the Jaspar pick btw
Definitely not the best pass coverage guy, but give me a guy who can stuff the run every day of the week especially how bad we have been lately
I don't love DHB... Far from it
I just think the Raiders are going to take him. With his size and speed, he SCREAMS Raiders.

And actually
a Raiders fan friend of mine (yes we all have one in our closet) said today he’d heard from a Raider insider (he has connex) that they were seriously looking into DHB. He does seem like Al’s kind of guy. In other words, a fast player who they will overdraft and eventually be a bust.
Could be they were looking at him for either a traded down late 1st round pick or 2nd round though, who knows. I mean even for Al picking him in at 7 seems a major stretch. But yeah, wouldn’t put it past them.
How about this for a thing to throw out there
Draft Jackson/BJ/Orkapo whoever happens to slide to 12
Trade 18 to a team for a 2 and next years 1st like teams have been doing
Take that 2nd and draft a solid guy, or deal it to Cleveland for Quinn
So you have your franchise QB, a stud DL, and 3 1st’s next year, how sick would that be.
You gotta stick with ESPN, only way to go with Mel’s hair getting 20 min of coverage
3 1sts
would be way too expensive to sign
by theflanman86 on Apr 24, 2009 8:23 PM MDT up reply actions
next year is uncapped
SPEND SPEND SPEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This would be great
we’d instantly get 3 defensive line starters.
I’d be a little disappointed if we go kruger over ziggy but oh well.
Anyways there looks to be great value at the start of the second round. If we somehow trade back and up from late rounds to the beginning of the secound round I think we’d hit the jackpot.
I had Jerry at 18
and I got chastised for being dumb then a sack of rocks (4/0)DT. Well it always seems to come back around, nice mock Ted.
I don't think you're dumb or a sack of rocks
Keep the good stuff coming bfree

You aint dumb Bfree...
He has mad talent but I dont think we need to take on a project of cahnging a 1st rounder who is more suited to a 4-3 into a 3-4 end.
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????
He also has a non-stop motor
I’d be open to that if the FO thinks he can convert to the DE position.
And thats the big IF as TB said in his post. if we could get him the 2nd...rock on...just think its a bit if a risk!

one thing we have to remember
is that we will still be playing a fair amount of 4-3. also, if our 4-3 players are better, than we would be stupid to switch schemes this year. i guess the point is jerry could still be a good pick without worrying about scheme conversion…
go see McD's interview today....
He was pretty adamant we are going 3-4 unless something drastic happens!

2 dt's in the first round?!
don’t tease me. i’m pretty sure mcd is taking an o player in the first round, but i’m hoping for d-line all the way. ilb/mlb acceptable, jenkins also acceptable, providing we use the other first on dt/nt. we are pretty desperate on this unit, if you ask me. but can he resist temptation? mr. nolan, speak up! stay tuned, 12 hrs. to go…
taste my blintzkrieg!
2009-year of the defense.
draft doesnt start until 2 pm mst
so we’ll have to wait a little bit longer than 12 hours. but i am pumped
I am a bit slow...so I just got the whole
“Retired for John Elway” thing. lol dur…

Weird.
All the times I’ve read these and I had never gotten it until just now either. I wasn’t going to admit it, but because you did, I figured I’d let you know you weren’t alone.
It was one of those moments where I just slapped myself in that face and lol’d.

so the tyson jackson sweepstakes has another entry
the patriots are now rumored to be looking to trade up into the top 10 for jackson
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Ar1r81RjYPeI9fap.UFqhKE5nYcB?slug=jc-patstrade042409&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
i cant believe how much his stock has soared in just the past two days
I know
me neither. Which is a bummer because I wanted the Broncos to get him, but not if it requires all this trading up nonsense. He was thought of as a 15-20 pick not that long ago. Then 10-15. Now top 10? All because teams need ends. And he’s pretty good. Oh well.
Maybe Aaron Curry will slide. ;-)
Great Mock
I will do cartwheels if your picks come through . Good job on your research hope it all goes good. Have Fun !!!!!!
Curry & Raji
If both of these guys slide as far as #9, as this mock predicts, should GB take Raji, would a trade with SF for the #10 pick to get Curry be an option? At that point, our top 2 targets (Raji & Jackson) would already be off the board. I still think that KC will take Curry at the 3 spot, but as long as we’re all playing the ‘what if’ game, I’m wondering if we were to package, say, the #12 and the 3rd-rounder from Chicago to move ahead of Buffalo (who’s also in the market for an OLB), we could get our pass-rushing OLB and try to get Brace later on.
I’ve always preferred Brace over Raji, because (and this is just my opinion) I think the dropoff in talent between Jackson, Orakpo, Jerry, et al. and other 3-4 DEs is much greater than the difference between Raji and Brace. We could go after other key defensive positions in the 1st and still have an option at NT in the 2nd.
Thoughts?
I like your optimism, but
I disagree that Maclin and Heyward Bay will be picked top ten, despite Al Davis being a certified kook, I think he rather stick it to Bronco fans and take Raji than take a leap of faith in Bay who obviously has the speed Davis craves but lacks hands which you need to be an effective WR in the NFL. But I think Jackson may be there, but I would bet there would be a better chance of us trading back and allowing NE to draft Jackson, then let the S-storm circle on McDaniels cutting favors to his old boss, but in reality I think that would be the best move.
"Me fail english, that unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum
"Duffman is thrusting in the direction of the problem" - Duffman
"Good, bad, I'm the one with the gun, A-hole" - Ash from Army of Darkness
I think the old boss
giving away Vrabel and Cassel to KC wasn’t nearly as talked about as I thought it would have been based on the (lack of) compensation.
It still blows me away that people were like “oh, wow.” instead of firing up a huge media storm of doom.

I could live with part of the draft picks here but I have some reservations about 50%!
Think we really need a corner in the draft because if you look at our squad depth in that position its abysmal.
And I don’t really think Center and Tightend are that high on the list of needs this year!
Also through research I’ve tried to go for players that have high character and leadership qualities.
Put a few options in for a few of the picks! What do you think?
12 BJ Raji NT Boston College
18 Peria Jerry DT Ole Miss (Maybe Maualuga or Jackson if they’re available! any 2 of of the above in the 1st round would be good)
16(48) Darius Butler CB UConn
15(79) Jasper Brinkley ILB South Carolina
20(84) Ramses Barden WR Cal Poly
14(114) Sammie Lee Hill NT or Chris Clemons S Clemson
13(149) Rhett Bohmer QB Sam Houston State or Curtis Painter QB Purdue
12(185) Josh Mauga ILB Navada
16(225) Khalif Mitchell DT East Carolina
26(235) Kory Sheets RB Purdue
God I hope you're right. Oh, yeah, and I hope you're wrong too.
If Raji falls to us at 12, I will by throwing my hands up in joy and thanking the football gods. Sure, there are some character/motor concerns, but for his talent to come at #12? And think that that will also free us in the first round next year to take a QB or some other BPA.
But if Raji does fall to us, I think that instantly upgrades our line in a huge way with the starters we already have. There is no need to get Jerry as well with 18. What I would want to see based on who you have on the board still is 1. Moreno, 2. Cushing, 3. Maualuga, 4. Maybin. I get the feeling that my Moreno idea will fall on deaf ears with your point of view, so go with Cushing/Maualuga if you prefer. My point is that Raji’s presence enhances our entire line, because he will command double-teams and will generally plug the middle. For this reason, there is no need to spend two first-rounders on the D-line. Better to wait until next year and then see who BPA is with either of our first-rounders.
I’m still fine with the DE in the second round, just not Paul Kruger. Granted, on your board he is BPA. Still, I have a suspicion that either Gilbert or Barwin will be around then. That second round is loaded with special talent.
Speaking of that, did anyone else notice that NE has 3 second-rounders?! Good God Almighty. Is anyone doubting the genius of Bellichick? I think that’s good news for us in the land of McDaniels.
Final thought: with Raji on board, I would rather look for an ILB who is great in coverage. Raji will stop running plays up the middle, so why get an ILB who excels at that? Besides, Andra Davis’s strength is the run, as is Larsen’s. I would rather have Darry Beckwith in the 3rd, but you obviously have him graded out much lower (5th round). Like Tyson Jackson going to KC at #3, or Curry slipping to #10, I am highly dubious that will happen.
"3rd and 6, Elway shotgun... Elway, scrambling, looking, running-- DIVING!!!-- inside the 5 yard line for a first down! Is he only 37?! How important is this football game? How bad does John Elway want to win this football game? Where you see the quarterbacks go down: Not Elway!"

You nailed it, Tacky

I don’t know that we would trade down, but I’ve been watching the NE draft approach for the past few years just because they seem (Maroney aside) very good at it. The predominance of 2nds permits them to move up if there’s a player they have their heart set on, but generally to add players that fit their mold – good value, talented, chosen for a specific role.
I was heartened to hear that the Broncos don’t have a huge board. They have a limited number of players that they feel fit specific roles and that they will take. How different that is from most teams! I like it. Gonna be a fun day.

Just FLOP Baby!
Oh, happy days if the Raiders pick up DHB.
Big, fast guy who runs like greased lightning. Fortunately for us, he couldn’t catch a cold in an ice box.
Stock has been rising straight up since his blazing fast 40 time. But, his pick, to me, screams Troy Williamson.
No matter what happens with us it would mean so much to me to see the Raiders flop yet again in the first round.
McDaniels confirmed Friday that D.J. Williams, when he fully recovers from offseason shoulder surgery, will play weakside inside linebacker. Free-agent signee Andra Davis will play at the strongside inside position. McDaniels said Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder, the team’s first- and second-round picks, respectively, in the 2007 draft, are learning to play outside linebacker.
He also put Broncoland on notice that it shouldn’t be surprised if at least one offensive player is selected from their first-round picks.
“The perception is the defense is the only thing that needs fixed,” McDaniels said. “And that’s totally untrue. We need to do some things offensively.”
Hope these little snippets help with your final mocks!!!
