Broncos select DB Darcel McBath 48th Pick
The defensive makeover continues as the Broncos selected Texas Tech DB Darcel McBath with their 2nd Round pick, #48 overall.
The Broncos have a definite strategy so far in this draft, going after highly productive college players with a nose for the football. McBath is no exception, having picked off 7 passes in 2008 returning two for touchdowns.
Overall, McBath started 39 of 45 games in his career at Tech, mostly at safety. The Broncos needed to overhaul the secondary and they have done so with Smith and McBath.
It is true that neither of these guys are household names, but worry not Broncos fans, both of these guys have skill and ability. They know how to go get the football and were highly productive.

i disagree
Coach McD has spoken too highly about how versatile Hills is, and how that versatility is needed for the new offense. I think it’s more likely that the logjam at running back will be resolved by an attempt to trade someone like young or torain.

Cut.
Selvin Young and Andre Hall are definitely out. Aldridge and Ryan Torrain are probably out. That leaves a manageable number of backs.

Clearly.
Management must be more satisfied with our current front seven options than we thought…

Mini camps must have shown them something that we have not seen. Plus, with the veterans we have in the secondary, this will be a great mentoring opportunity.

it's a shift in system
From what I’ve seen the system Coach McD has brought in involves a lot of cornerback and linebacker blitzes. Moving Doom and maybe one or two of our other former linemen out to a rushing linebacker position make just make better use of their skill sets. The front three in the system, if I understand it correctly are largely assigned the task of standing up blocker and clogging running lanes,

Does anyone know
Was the 1st Round pick traded to Seattle the one the Broncos got from Chicago’s or their own?

it was our own, not the Cutler one
"3rd and 6, Elway shotgun... Elway, scrambling, looking, running-- DIVING!!!-- inside the 5 yard line for a first down! Is he only 37?! How important is this football game? How bad does John Elway want to win this football game? Where you see the quarterbacks go down: Not Elway!"

agreed, DP says
http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_12228231
McDaniels dealt the Broncos’ 2010 first-round pick to nab Alphonso Smith, an all-American cornerback from Wake Forest, at No. 37. The Broncos still have a first-rounder obtained from Chicago in the Jay Cutler deal.
We’lll see if it’s confirmed but that’s what the DP says.

Are you sure they didn’t trade the pick for a 3rd?

Mixed reports on McBath
Love this pick. Some reports play him off as strictly a centerfield type back halfer, but he is a better tackler and hitter than some of the reports (the ones used by NFL.Com and CBSSports) indicate. He is the competitive, cerebral type player McX says he likes. I love the early focus on DB’s with two master mentors on the roster to help them a long.

I think I'm done.
I’m not liking many of the decisions they have made. I hope that I am proven wrong and they all turn up aces on the field, but right now I feel kinda sick to my stomach.

will you feel the same if
they come out and win their first 4 or 5 games? If they win 9 games (which would be 2 more than 2007 and 1 more than 2008)? If, taking a La La Land approach, they make it into the playoffs?
I can remember Shanahan getting slammed year after year for his draft choices, and he usually was able to get at least an 8-8 effort out of his players.

better do it in the first month
The first month is the cupcake part of our schedule. If we don’t gel by then, it will be a very long season.

I keep seeing the phrases versatility & nose for the ball
if they’re versatile they can play in many different ways, and given the fact that we had the worst turn over ratio in the league last year, this might not be such a bad thing

Huh?
If the draft averages 50% success rate and we are pining for the less than accurate opinions of Mayock, McShay, and Mr Hair……why is everyone so up in arms.
I understand the misses by Shannie and Co, but wow, can we have some faith at least until the end of this football season?

Faith?
Why would there be faith in two guys who have zero experience or track record at thier respective positions in the NFL?

Trading up for smith
i like the kid, but with rey rey there at 37 i just dont understand not taking him when we need to stuff the run. yea are secondary is old but they still have something left. i like moreno and ayers, just dont think we should have passed over rey
by rayzin1973 on Apr 25, 2009 7:05 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
because Rey is dumb?
or has other issues? can’t play the pass?
Who knows, but for whatever reason a whole lotta teams passed on Rey, he was the 3rd USC LB chosen.

Concerning Maualuga....
From cnnsi.com:
The problem with Maulauga is that as much of a wrecking ball as he is on the field, he’s a bit of a space cadet. I’m not just talking off the field, where he reportedly scored a 15 on the Wonderlic and didn’t know who Vice President Joe Biden was, but on it as well. No one frustrated USC coaches more than Maualuga. He looked like he was running around with his head cut off and looking to hit anything that moved. The more tape pro coaches watched on Maualuga, the more times they probably saw him being saved by his teammates on missed assignments.
