Donald Wahington, CB for Chiefs

Regarded as one of the best pure athletes ever recruited by coach Jim Tressel, off-field issues and problems with the coaching staff, along with inconsistent play, prevented the talented athlete from realizing his potential.

More on Washington

His career never matched his athletic talent. There were flashes of brilliance, including 100 yards gained on three fumble recoveries and 104 yards gained on two interception returns. But in 37 games that included 24 starts, his great leaping ability was rarely on display, as he managed to deflect just four passes

And we got Alphonso. Hmmm… No contest.

Huh...

This sounds like a Shanny pick. Take the guy with the hopes that you’ll be able to turn his character issues around and coach him into being a solid, loyal player that realises his potential.

For his sake, I hope the Chiefs have good coaches.

For the Broncos’ sake, I hope they don’t.

Have the same problem

SDTF’s suggestion is exactly what I have to do to fix it. It’s probably the scripts in the page that control the instant updates. Your other option might be to turn off that feature, but then you’d have to continually refresh to see new comments…

Agreed

I like Tyson Jackson well enough but at #3 he seemed a reach. I wondered why they didn’t try to trade down a bit to get an extra pick and still end up with him anyway… or why they didn’t take the more sure thing in Aaron Curry. The next pick wasn’t too impressive to me either.

But at least they’re not the Raiders! See repost of quote from Don Banks below…

I bet Pioli is underwhelmed as well

and probably hated having to go that high on Jackson but couldn’t trade outta the 3 spot.

here's what nfl.com had on him

Analysis
Positives: Good quickness off the snap. … Wide set and has good lateral agility and balance to compete with athletic defensive tackles in pass protection. … Quick first step to pop the defensive tackle and release to the second level for combo blocks and on pulling plays. … Good vision to locate the secondary block and is athletic enough to hit the moving target.

Negatives: Raw. … Was getting by on his athleticism at the college level. … Marginal upper-body strength and hand placement. … Struggles to sustain blocks. … A bit high in pass protection and can be bull-rushed into the pocket.

Injury Report
2009: Suffered a right quad strain on his first 40-yard dash at the Combine, keeping him out of the remainder of the workouts.

Don Banks on Raiders

Sarcasm anyone?

If you’re the Oakland Raiders, it must be so frustrating to know you’re the smartest team in the league, but not have your won-loss record show it. Other than having an undeserved superiority complex, how else do you explain taking the less than polished Darrius Heyward-Bey at No. 7, a good 20 spots or so higher than most clubs had him rated?

From ESPN

Bruton impressed as a run defender in Notre Dame’s early-season win over Michigan, showing speed, range and willingness in run support and sound open-field tackling. The concern for Bruton is his inconsistent footwork in coverage. He is not fluid and takes choppy steps when gearing down to change directions, raising questions about his ability to match up with slot receivers at the next level. Bruton would fit best on a team that plays a lot of zone coverage and asks its safeties to play a big role in run support.

Darryl Richard doesn't sound bad

It would go along with the other picks McD has made, going for locker room leaders…

Analysis:
Positives: Strong interior presence who plays with low pad level and a sturdy anchor. … Holds his ground very well against double-team blocks inside. … Moves down the line when engaged. … Gives up his body to maintain the gap, is able to push two blockers on twists. … Willing to pursue plays down the line and downfield. … Flashes the upper-body strength and hands to rip across his man to beat him. … Recognizes screens when let go. … Intelligent player and a leader in the locker room.

Negatives: Lacks elite explosiveness and chasing speed. … Rarely collapses the pocket using a bull rush. … Takes advantage of Tech’s aggressive, one-gap system but usually shows only moderate initial quickness off the snap. … Will stand up and hesitate after initial move, possibly due to poor stamina. … Lateral movement in space is extremely limited.

This is the first pick that I don't get.

Here’s the deal. I’m not calling our coach names, and I’m not whining because I had my heart set on a specific player or position. (We’re not going to waste a pick on a NT if there isn’t a NT we like. You don’t draft a position for the sake of drating it).

I disagree with the pick because the guy doesn’t cover well. He’s a run stopping SS, and I just don’t value those very much. (Also, I’m open to being proven wrong).

That’s how you disagree with a pick with class.

I agree hes not a great in coverage

but we drafted McBath yesterday who is an exceptional cover safety with a definite weakness in run support….with Burton he is said to be one of the best safetys lining up near the line of scrimage, bringing pressure and stopping the run….this is a very good run stopping safety who could compliment McBath’s weaknesses very well

I admit I am a little confused with the lack of dline activity but I like this pick

Strange that the Bears haven't drafted O-Line

Maybe last years crew wasn’t that bad. After all, Forte did great running and recieving and Olson at TE was very productive. Maybe Orton’s sacks were due to bad separation, slow decisions or slow footwork by the QB or some combination of the above.

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

I see it too...

…our secondary is gonna be deep and will cover up the youth up front. I also love this kid Bruton, he’s 6’2" yet he ran the second fastest 40 time of all DB’s. Speed and height, they also say that he is a great tackler. Bruton was a special teamer too and Smith can return kicks as well.

I'm not saying we do...

I’m as perplexed as the next person but McD believing that has to be the only explanation. It could have been partly due to our scheming too. I dunno. All I know is McD has set himself up for some massive protests if this doesn’t work out.

Obviously, McD and Nolan felt the secondary needed more help.

We already have a group of good NFL role players up front (Thomas, Peterson, Fields, Clemons, Moss, DOOM, Crowder, Reid). I felt last year that if we could simply add one beast, one guy with loads of talent, the whole group would look a ton better. Hopefully, we just drafted the second coming of Trever Price.

As for LBs, we have great young depth in Larsen and Woodyard. Good vet depth in Haggen in the middle. We picked up a prototypical 3-4 MLB leader in Davis. We already have a stud LB in DJ, and Boss played great last year when healthy. In the hybrid D we’ll run, we also have a glut of guys that can stand up and rush the passer from the outside.

We already have the good role players and depth at the front seven, and after drafting Ayres we have a couple playmakers up there as well. Now look at the secondary. Goodman, Baily, Dawkins, and Hill are all good to great starters, but there is absolutely no depth. I’m sorry, but Josh Bell and JMFW really didn’t get it done. They could be good depth this year, but the thought of either of them starting, even at the nickel, scares me. At safety, the only remaining guy worth anything behind the starters is Barret. What if Hill and/or dawkins go down? Remember the Vernan Fox/Barret nightmare down the stretch last year? Yikes.

I wasn’t really thinking this way going into the draft, but I guess you can maybe see what the front office is doing. I’m probably just rationalizing here, so be it. Look for another suprise right now. How about another DB?

Olsen

Nationally underrated, Olsen leaves Iowa as a first-team All-Big Ten selection and a rising prospect on NFL boards due to his size, strength, durability and versatility. A four-year contributor, Olsen started each of the past two seasons, primarily on the right side of the line, but also seeing some action at left tackle.

He was first-team All-Big Ten selection by the media and coaches while primarily at right guard in 2008 after garnering honorable mention honors at right tackle as a junior. A strong showing throughout the week at the East-West Shrine Game might have secured Olsen’s place as a second-day draft selection. Had an arm span of 33 1/8 inches and a hand span of 9 1/2 inches at the combine.

Scott Wright's scouting report.

Strengths:
Terrific height and adequate bulk…Sound technique and understands positioning and angles…Good awareness…Is stout at the point…Very tough…Plays with a nasty demeanor…Versatile…A lot of experience.

Weaknesses:
Not a great athlete…Feet aren’t very nimble…Marginal quickness and agility…Short arms…Not a natural knee bender…Isn’t real strong or powerful…Has trouble in space…Could be more physical…Durability ?

Notes:
A Parade All-American in high school…Redshirted in 2004…Played extensively as a backup and earned 1 start in 2005…Started games at right tackle and both guard spots in 2006…Spent most of the 2007 season at right tackle and was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten…Played right guard as a senior and garnered 1st Team All-Big Ten honors…Dealt with back, head, shoulder and ankle injuries in college…Has starting potential and with his ability to play other positions he should at least offer value as a backup…Overachiever with average measurables and physical tools but first-rate intangibles.
