Is Knowshon going to have the number 25?

Doesn't that mean that all those tackles we wanted..
Have gone to 4-3 teams? Hill to Detroit, Taylor to Indy.
I think beyond Raji there really wasn’t much to be had at NT this draft.
every other tackle drafted by the other teams...
weren’t much right?
So we’ll go with who?

is that 3 hawkeyes, now?
and are we becoming the first team to try a secondary-led defensive alignment? anyone? cool with the g pick, hamilton will need to be replaced eventually in this offense. but where is the mfgd d-line that we need? flabbergasted.

I'm not going to pigeon hole the scheme... 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 2-1-8, - I don't care!
I am going to just call it DEFENSE!
A defense that will get turnovers and give our efficient yet explosive offense a short field… is the expectation is it not?

on David Bruton
These stats, however, do not take into account his greatest strength, which the [broncos] need desparate help in: Special Teams. Bruton was a fixture on Special Teams all 4 years, mostly as a Gunner. Remember that speed I talked about earlier? He is fantastic as a Gunner because he can get down the field fast, and has the closing skills to actually make the tackle. Nothing is worse than having a fast guy get downfield, and blow the tackle due to bad technique. ND finished #1 in the country in Kickoff Coverage last season.

What about depth on the defensive line ? what if mutiple players go down to injury ?
What then ? What are the broncos doing with this draft ?
by broncosfaninphilly on Apr 26, 2009 12:05 PM MDT reply actions
Question: How does next year's D-line draft look compared to this year's?
Could they be thinking that the prospect will be that much better in ’10?
If they are thinking that...
I’m not sure they would have traded next years #1.

I'm really not sure what to think of this draft
I really like all 3 of the first players that we selected, but am unfamilar with almost all of the rest. I guess I expected that we would focus more on the D-line, but maybe McDaniels sees something there that I don’t. Oh well, here’s hoping for the best and that the next four picks will be good ones.

i think we learned from this draft that mock drafts are not very acurate even from "experts"
and that we should never discredit even the craziest of mocks drafts. like a mock draft with DHB with the raiders or a mock draft with us taking knowshown would be described as a horrible mock draft but in reality, a great one.

"according to the map, we've only gone 4 inches"
I just don't get it. I really don't.
We had a historically bad defense last year, and I know that it will be improved due to coaching, but you would think that we would still adress it somewhere. One front seven pick out of all these picks? Why? We have had shots at Brace, Gilbert, Brinkley, King, and so many others that had potential and we passed on them all. I really hope that it’s worth it and that McDaniels saw something in minicamp that we didn’t see last year.

From what Mayock and Davis say...
McKinley sure sounds like the Broncos’ new version of Wes Welker.
As for dealing the pick – keep in mind everyone, we’ve already drafted 8 players and have 2 remaining choices. There won’t even be enough roster spots for all those guys to make the squad. So, drafting 11 or 12 players would be a waste of time. Use the ammo, move up and get the players you really want.

Lack of Dline drafting
may be due to the fact only 3 D linemen play and we drafted Ayers in the first taking care of a third of that line, and we signed 2 NTs in the offseason both of whom would be better than wasting a pick on a late round NT

Here's my theory:
McD isn’t drafting any DL because he’s found a secret source. McD is signing the top three Sumo Wrestlers in the world to be our DL. It could work!!!

Good pick.
I didn’t expect any of our picks so far, but I only see one I don’t like (our second safety) and one that I can’t justify at all (a zone block guard without agile feet).
I know folks want the line covered, but the players just aren’t there in this draft. We did get a great DE, and we definately have the best defensive coordinator we’ve had in ages.

We took the best defensive lineman in the draft..
…made some FA pick-ups, and still have a DT we never really got to see (Powell). We also went out and got a defensive coordinator with a great resume (I mean EXCELLENT resume).
I think we as fans are more fixated on the DL because of what happened last year and the year before. But it looks like DL isn’t the concern based on what our coaches saw in mini-camp.
Let’s see how this plays out.

Not exactly.
The house that you wanted burned down, but the best house in town is what I bought. That’s the diff between highest need and best available.
Draft boards are skewed towards highest need. That’s why fans (and experts) never get their boards right, and scratch their heads every year. That’s why I don’t try to predict. I just rate the result.

It really isn't hard.
except for a couple of late picks, I like what I’ve seen.
The key is to not be fixated on a player or a position that you want. Instead, focus on how good the player is that we acquired. Most fans don’t think in the context of “best available” (even I don’t). But then you get trapped in a bad paradigm. That’s why Mayock likes our picks. They are all very good players, and good at what they do.

That's because BPA, in itself, is really an absurd philosophy.
If you’ve already got ten great WR then it makes absolutely no sense to draft another even if he is the BPA.
BPA at a position of need is a sound philosophy. Apparently McX and I don’t agree on the ‘position of need’ part.

Any position, extended to an extreme, becomes absurd.
We don’t have 10 great WRs. In fact, we don’t have 10 great anything. I don’t see a position we’ve over drafted.
Safety could be an argument, but Dawkins and Hill are not going to be here forever. I loved our first SAF pick. THe second one isn’t redundant, he’s just not the type of SAF I appreciate (in my opinion).

When I went to seminars hosted by pros, I learned just how many light years seperate my “expertise” from the pro level.
It’s like the difference between riding a big wheel and teaching theoretical physics. It just doesn’t compare. But for the money available, please, consider sending an application to a team.

But given our collective knowledge versus their expertise...
…it is reasonable to believe they know more about the team than we do.
I remember being a HS coordinator, and fans and parents being confused by moves we made. (Never mind that we were always contenders in the post season. Every year.) We as fans always believe we have some special insight that the actual coaches don’t have. It’s kind of funny. I was a HS coordinator, and KNOW with a passion that I would be clueless at a pro game prep session.
We as fans have an inkling, and that makes the game fun. But none of us have a clue how much goes into the pro game. (Every year, NFL coaches get bombarded by folks that play MADDEN trying to get a coaching job. I learned that at a seminar).

“If we get who I want, I give a certain grade”
What’s wrong with judging the draft on its own merit? These are all top notch players, and either fill a need now or when older players move on.
Moreno – We need a dynamic RB in 3 WR sets without a lead blocker.
Ayers – Everyone agrees we want the DL fixed
CB – To fill the shoes when our old CBs (both of them) move on
SAF – Again, both of our starting SAFs are old
TE – Graham is old
2nd SAF – I don’t like the player, but we have two old starting SAFs
OG – I don’t like the player, but our interior OL has no depth
WR – Stokley is getting older too.
These are all solidifying picks. The pattern should be clear.

D-line
My guess is that Marcus Thomas (RDE), Ron Fields (NT) and Robert Ayers (LDE) will start. Kenny Peterson will be our primary DE backup. Carlton Powell can play NT, but I hope we draft someone like Darryl Richard to complement him. Don’t forget Nic Clemons (DE), Ryan McBean (DE), J’Vonne Parker (DE), and Matthias Askew (DT) either. It seems that we actually do have some depth there, just not as much talent as I would like. Hopefully the lack of focus on d-line means that Josh liked what he saw from that unit in mini camp.
WE GOT MORENO!!!!
As a special teams demon and a situational rushing DE/OLB.
I see him as more of a linebacker, but ultimately I don’t think he’ll play much actual defense. Also, I forgot about Crowder, who I think can bulk up about 15-20 pounds and play DE.
WE GOT MORENO!!!!
they didn't hit in mini-camp
mcd said there was no real way to evaluate the line. i’m looking for players up the middle, a 172-lb. de/olb doesn’t help the run. powell is too small to man the nt position(if, again, we are thinking 3-4), and the de is not going to help with stuffing the run much, getting double-teamed. sorry, but i said i would be pissed if we don’t address our needs in the front 7.
i disagree we are ok there, and we just don’t need 2 secondaries, for instance. i reserve the right to question the plan we have, here. we easily could have cherry-picked front 7 help, rather cheaply, in fact. how many picks have we thrown away so far to move up to get a player at a position of non-need? sorry, but i have a problem with that, and the broncos will, too. i like nolan alot, it’s the players/picks/traded picks i’m concerned with, now. have you seen the size of the o-lines coming our way this season?

Personally, I don’t think I know enough to judge this draft. You certainly have the right to question the plan and assume it’s a poor one. Maybe some will assume it’s a good one, but I will do neither. The Draft isn’t even over yet – we’ve still got 2 more selections coming, plus UFAs. I’ll reserve my judgment (for what little it’s worth) at least until the first depth chart comes out.
For me, you can never have enough RBs, WRs, LBs and DBs…

Man Cinnci had probably the most potential value for their draft
Some potentially very good players, may also flame out, but definately got some very good value

El Guapo: A plethora.
Jefe: Oh yes, you have a plethora.
El Guapo: Jefe, what is a plethora?
Jefe: Why, El Guapo?
El Guapo: Well, you told me I have a plethora. And I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.
Jefe: Forgive me, El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education. But could it be that once again, you are angry at something else, and are looking to take it out on me?

2009-year of the secondary.
Defensive Backs
The 2009 Season ages of our presumed starting backfield…
Champ Bailey 33
Andre’ Goodman 31
Renaldo Hill 31
Brian Dawkins 36
Of our incumbent young DBs…
Josh Barrett = 7th rounder
Jack Williams = 4th rounder
Josh Bell = San Diego’s trash
Jones and Moulton, I’m not even sure whose trash heaps we picked them off of
I think the picture above shows why we’ve drafted so many defensive backs…
Umm, good catch.
Whoops! Sorry, Champ will of course be 31. Thanks, BKO

You take what you can get
If you look back at Shanny’s drafts, the old MO for the Broncos used to be to draft for needs and to fill holes. It sure looks like McD and Co. prefer to draft the best players. The entire defense needs to get younger, faster, stronger and just plain better. We can’t presume that all of this can occur in one offseason. Hopefully it can, but what if it can’t? Then you take the best players you can get and maybe it’s a 2-year process.
Would you rather get a group of D-Lineman you don’t love, and maybe next year draft some DBs you don’t love,
or
Would you rather get some DBs you love now and look to ’10 as a better class for DLinemen?
Now, I say that not knowing anything about the 2010 Class or its makeup. I’m just playing devil’s advocate here…
by Douglas A. Lee on Apr 26, 2009 1:26 PM MDT up reply actions
i understand that argument
but it is generally agreed that d-line takes the longest time to develop, especially when you’re running a 3-4 and a 4-3. we already burned a first next season, and even if we do select one next season, i doubt we will love him any more than the second-best nt available this year. my question again is: when will the sun and moon align that we get a stud in the middle of the line? sorry, but i draw the line here. never, it appears. not good enough, value, cost, blah, blah, blah. again. i’m done with excuses, good help was available this offseason, and we passed on them repeatedly. as we will next year. at least i seen it coming this time

But
what if McD and Co. really didn’t like the DTs after Raji?
by Douglas A. Lee on Apr 26, 2009 1:38 PM MDT up reply actions
then you trade up to #8 and get him
like we did 3 times, already. only this time, for a blue-chip prospect at an area of great need. that’s the way i see it, anyway

2009-year of the secondary.
To me,
That was the way Shanny went about things. But also, maybe we did try to move up to #8.
Keep in mind that, although Jacksonville was hotly rumored to trade down from #8, they ultimately did not. Maybe they didn’t actually want to trade down, as the draft developed. Perhaps they were set on an OT and both Smith’s were gone at #8.
by Douglas A. Lee on Apr 26, 2009 1:47 PM MDT up reply actions
Re DTs
what do people think about Marcus Thomas next year? Because my other thought is they must be liking his development. (Not that they don’t still clearly need another DT. I’m a bit mystified they haven’t taken one yet though there are still some good ones on the board — including Mitchell and Daryl Richard.) But it seemed like Thomas was developing in the interior faster than Moss or Crowder were on the outside. Just a thought.
