Back at it: Live Blog from the Press Pit Day 2

Old and new, the Broncos continue building their future today for Day #2

Good Morning Broncos Fans!  Whatever you think of Day 1, and I'll have my thoughts once I get back to MHR HQ, you can't make a full determination until the entire Draft is complete.  The Broncos have 6 more selections, starting with 2 in the 4th round.  There are still plenty of players on the board, so sit back, relax and get ready.  The staff at MileHighReport will once again provide you with the best Broncos Draft coverage ANYWHERE!

Milehighreport_small_mediumThe Big-10 takes center stage as two former Hawkeyes and a Boilermaker go with the first 3 picks.  The atmosphere isn't nearly what it was yesterday which is to be expected, but all Championship teams build much of their core on Day 2, not Day 1.

Milehighreport_small_medium Our first trade of Day 2 sees the Patriots trade out of their 3rd round selection giving the Jaguars back to back picks.

Milehighreport_small_medium  Pittsburgh, using the first of 2 third round picks they acquired from the Broncos in the trade that got the Broncos Richard Quinn, are on the clock.  Let's see where they decide to go.

Milehighreport_small_medium  A cascade of boos meet a Steelers fan that got the chance to announce the pick.  Always fun.  With the choice, the Steelers address their O-Line, taking Kraig Urbik, a guard from Wisconsin

Milehighreport_small_medium In between picks, they show fan comments on the big screen.  Obviously, with nothing else to entertain the masses, they tend to shout rude comments at the screens.  It does make for some laughs, however.

Milehighreport_small_medium The Steelers are back on the clock with the 2nd Broncos' pick acquired late yesterday.

Milehighreport_small_medium  The Steelers select a WR with the pick, Mike Wallace from Ole' Miss

Milehighreport_small_medium Another DT leaves the board when the Carolina Panthers take Corey Irvin from Georgia.  Another 30 minutes or so until the Broncos make their selection.

Milehighreport_small_medium  One potential target, QB Stephen McGee leaves the board at #101 to the Cowboys.   Does that put Rhett Bomar at the top of the Broncos QB board?

Milehighreport_small_mediumAfter nearly 3 hours, the Broncos are back on the clock for the first time in Day 2.  With needs remaining along the D-Line and Linebacker, as well as some issues at QB, the Broncos have a few different directions they can go...

Milehighreport_small_medium Another DB heads to Denver, this time David Bruton from the Irish

6th! Welcome from Anchorage, Alaska

I slept in and didn’t get up til 0607, but at least I wasnt late for the Jets pick. Green looks like a good fit for them.

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

KC gets Alex McGee, a big DE

He has potential as a run stuffer and he is BIG. KC has invested heavily in their D-Line the last 4-5 years

Not a lot of cheers for Magee.

And not a lot of help for Cassell either. Seriously, who’s going to catch his passes? Who’s going to block for him? I think they need to upgrade that offense. I like Magee, but I don’t like this if I’m Matt Cassell.

Note on R. Quinn yesterday

TSN also noted that he’ll be a force setting the corner for our running game – sets up Moreno perfectly. They said he’s the best pure blocking TE in this year’s draft. So, DG as a blocker/receiver, Scheffler (unless we trade him) as a receiver/blocker and Quinn as a blocker. Nice corps

There are some saying

that he can catch better than people think too, he just wasn’t asked to do it a lot because this team was stacked at wr…here’s hoping we can trot out a 3 TE set and have all 3 be receiving threats…what other team can do that?

Yup, McD said that

He said that he caught most of his balls during their personal workouts with him and his combine performance.

Love your point about 3 TE sets and all three being receivers. Wow, are we getting some options. Not sure many of us would have predicted our O would have had so much room to grow.

Love or hate our picks but at least we’re not Oakland. Maybe Al Davis has his draft board upside down or something.

Water Down the Koolaid!! I'm thinking I'll post here much less since now you delete the negative remarks!!!!! BS

    Alienate & then trade Cutler
    Draft
Not a single pick at our greatest need …defensive tackle
A first for a second! (Ours, not Chicago’s)
two thirds for a very late 2nd round blocking tight end…
Belicheck’s plan will be complete as soon as we trade Champ & Clady for late rounders with which we’ll draft wheelchair bound punters.

If the Raiders wouldn’t have gone all Al Davis, we’d be hearing every commentator trashing our EVERY decision since the season ended. …Instead now only every other one does!

For the record, I do like some of the players we picked up (in free agency too). But many are questionable & outside Robert Ayers, every single pick was either not a position of need or far too early for the price…

What the hell do we do now?
Call for Coach & GM’s head over & over?
Support them through bad & worse?
I sat through four superbowl losses to the very end
I sat through the loss to Jacksonville at home in the first round
I’ll never quit on our team (I’ve considered it! I can’t)
But this sick feeling in my stomach is one that’s going to last for years!

by Whidbey Bronco on Apr 26, 2009 9:29 AM MDT reply actions

Reality

I’m not sure it’s ignoring reality. What I think the Broncs are up to is setting themselves up with the best available people. Take Quinn and when Graham’s contract is up, they let him go as they’ll have developed Quinn. Same is true with the corner and safety we are making sure we are set when Champ and Dawkins slow down. This is the Patriot’s way, look at the way they’ve drafted over the years. Sure I think there’s a collective desire for more DLine guys, but if they aren’t there, why reach? Notice the Pats have basically decided no one was worth a first round pick? And now they traded out of the third round? Fill your roster with guys who have a shot to make the team rather than reach for guys who will but won’t matter (Moss, Crowder).

If people aren't supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat??

I like that McD has his prospects and is getting them

He said that they only had about a half dozen, dozen on their board. He made some major moves to get them.

I’m not sure on NT. Fields is talented, and we don’t know anything about Parker yet. I would have given a lot to be a fly on the wall at the minicamp

alrighty, then

just getting in, i see we traded our 2 3rd-rounders for a late 2nd, and our first-round next year for a 2nd this year. to draft a cb and a te, not exactly positions of need. rb with the first pick, even though mcd stated he wouldn’t draft somewhere early where we are deep in numbers. a pass-rushing de that can’t seem to get to the qb, and a 1-year starter, who appears too light to play the 3-4 and anchor the run. a pessimistic view, perhaps, but this means several things:

we have no nt/dt prospect, which is obviously need #1. brace, hood, and others were there for the taking. ilb/mlb as well, where rey and james could have been plucked for pennies. a small end is all we got in the front 7 with 5 picks(3 2nd-rounders), and a first-rounder gone next season, so much for the qb derby and multiple picks in the first-round in ’10. someone please explain to me exactly when the moon and sun will align and we address our every-year needs(dt/ilb).

as predicted, mcd couldn’t resist adding some new toys, again at positions of non-need. moreno may be an excellent rb for us, but 4 rb’s, 3 safeties, and 2 corners doesn’t seem to be a smart plan to me. 9 players at 3 positions, and not much at others. we now have 8 guys in the secondary, and still little d-line/lb help. i would have preferred a c/g, trading up 3 spots for crabtree, or a bonafide olb for the 3-4, even, if we still intend to run it. i really don’t see how, now. in the 4-3, we may be ok this year. i hope they realize this, and make the adjustment before the games begin. we could have a good 4-3 this season, if they decide to use what we have correctly.

the first-rounder next season really hurts. was this guy even going to be gone at our pick, and/or did we really also need the safety pick we made there. trading out of the 3rd, where we had 2 picks, to take a te? wow. still waiting for interior defensive help, as i expect i always will. some good players picked, but it won’t matter when we get gashed up the gut this season. please go 4-3, nolan, it’s a better fit for these guys, seriously. the defending champs know the worth of a dt, even on a great defense. we should take notice

taste my blintzkrieg!

Surprise...the Donks do not appear to be drafting for need at all.

I have to admit I have been surprised by most of the picks and the total lack of emphasis on the D-line and LBs – which I thought were the weakest links on the team. But at this point it seems clear that with all of the moves before the draft, the new regime was trying to build a team that they feel has adequate depth at each position so that they could take the best player on their board at all times in the draft. They must have a lot more confidence in the D-line than I do, but then again they did just work these guys through a mini-camp so they are probably at least a little more informed than I am.

It seems like a different approach than what we have been used to, but it also speaks to the confidence that the coach and GM have in the players that are already on the team. These guys are only picking players that they feel have the talent to be productive at the pro level, and then there will be a battle royale for each position at camp. I’m excited to see if this approach builds a deeper and more talented team than the approach taken by Shanahan the past few years.

I like what we are doing

in this draft. I like taking the best player available as oppossed to a lesser player simply because we need a position ie moreno instead of orakpo. An offense needs a go to number one guy. When you line up with that guy it is an attitude, We are going to run, you know we are going to run, we will still run on you. It is an attitude that we have not had since TD left. I cant wait to see the third quarter drive when we just run it down the opponent’s throat.
remeber when NE first started its championship run they had Corey Dillon as their primary RB. that is what knowshon will be. And that opens up hillis as a functional FB no just a blocking one, as a FB he will be more versatile than as a halfback.
