HA! Told you so...
As I stated weeks ago, I gave the Assoc. AD at Fresno State his first job and he told me not to be surprised if my Broncos tookk a serious look at him. Brandstater is in the Cassel and Brady mental and physical mode. Let’s HOPE for similar results in a few years!
I wished I would have put him in my Mock (I went for the Texas A&M QB)…
Wow. Good call.

scouting report
04/15/2009 – Brandstater has NFL size and great command in the huddle and has operated in a prolific offense during his college career. Most scouts agree that he is an extremely smart player who is like an extra coach on the field. They do not agree that means he will be a good quarterback at the NFL level. Brandstater was actually more highly regarded as a safety at Turlock (Calif.) High School, where the quarterback was an afterthought in a run-oriented offense. But the Bulldogs put him under center, and he used his classroom, street and field smarts to thrive. NFL teams like big quarterbacks with big arms, and he is all of that. However, he doesn’t fire the ball as much as he floats it, especially on medium and deep passes, and NFL defensive backs will love to see that hang time. Brandstater generated a lot of yardage on quick throws from the spread formation, but his overall accuracy was inconsistent. Last season, he completed a career-high 221 of 371 passes (59.6%) for 2,664 yards and 18 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. His stock has been on the rise since scouts were impressed with his workout at the combine and then again at his pro day. – Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFL Draft Scout

from ninersnation
One California QB that does intrigue me is Tom Bradstater of Fresno State. Right off the bat, I’ll acknowledge that his stats definitely do not blow anybody away (well except maybe his mom):
Year GP Comp Att Yds Comp % TD INT
2004 RS – - – - – -
2005 8 6 13 49 46.2% 1 1
2006 11 146 268 1,490 54.5% 13 14
2007 13 211 337 2,654 62.9% 15 5
2008 13 221 371 2,664 59.6% 18 12
Totals 45 584 989 6,857 59.0% 47 32
However, after watching him in the Shrine Game, I was kind of in awe at his formidable size. He stands 6’5 220 lbs and has a very solid arm. I think people said the same thing about Jeff George and obviously that worked out real well. But if Brandstater isn’t a head case, maybe he’s worth a late pick or signing as an undrafted free agent.
Strengths
He’s obviously got the size at 6’5, 220. Fortunately it sounds like he can move around in the pocket fairly well for a big guy. Given the athleticism of defensive players these days, mobility is a big plus. You don’t see many immovable objects like Drew Bledsoe anymore. At the combine he ran a 4.37 20-yard shuttle run, which was good for fifth best among QBs. That shows his ability to get back and forth and general mobility.
The big plus lately is that apparently between the Shrine Game and the Combine, Brandstater was working on his accuracy. At the Shrine Game he definitely had issues overthrowing receivers, but according to some folks at nfldraftscout.com, he really helped himself at the Combine in that area.
While he has some weaknesses in his mechanics, it sounds like he could prove solid in the West Coast offense. The 49ers seem to want to incorporate some aspects of the West Coast offense into the Raye-Singletary experiment, so that’s something to keep in mind.
Weaknesses
Accuracy is still an issue deep down the field. While he can hit the shorter 10-20 yard passes he really struggles deep, which is something that showed in the Shrine Game. Additionally, his decision-making apparently leaves something to be desired. He can telegraph passes, which is when he’s not poorly delivering them.
It sounds like the big problem for him throughout his college career is inconsistency. He’ll take a step in his development, only to take two steps back. NFL Draft Scout indicated that 2008 yielded big numbers in part due to a spread offense look. It seems like that’s all the rage in the college game these days. Of course, if Brandstater is going to be sitting for a season or two anyways, maybe it’s not that big a deal.
Looking Forward
Brandstater is consistently labeled a project, with many sites not expecting much more than a solid backup QB. Brandstater thinks he could be drafted anywhere from the 2nd to 5th round, but many folks see him as strictly 5th round or later.
there weren't many QBs.....
… that I saw as having the potential to fit into our system and having the tools — he was one who did.
Re: the changes he made between the Shrine and Combine; that was interesting. He seemed to correct a deficit in that short period, so the complaints about him (which were quite valid) weren’t problems a little later. It shows me how quickly he addressed his shortcoming. In fact, the major lesson I got on him was his ability to fix a problem in his game when necessary. It’s a good quality, and speaks to a great learning curve.
Brandstater is worth a look
never hurts to get a late round QB, Green Bay got a lot of vale from late QBs that were leveraged into early picks

Then they overpaid by a 7th this year. Not that I’m concerned about that, but so goes the math.
by David Hooper on Apr 26, 2009 2:06 PM MDT up reply actions
and like I mentioned in Round 5, they’ve already drafted 9 players, plus another one is coming at the end of the draft. That’s 10 draftees, plus UFAs. Not everyone will make the team, anyway.

Very true.
I’m not complaining in the least. Sometimes you have to find a way to cut down the math, and you don’t always get the luxury of make a deal with perfect equity. If it’s worth it to them to get TB, then they probably needed to “overpay” by the 7th.

Enough Already
Can somebody tell NFL Network enough already with the Jay Cutler crap.. he’s gone it’s over — get the hell over it. Talk about the team from now on
.. and Mayock last I looked Orton is a winning QB in the NFL
.. and Sykes I think we’ll score just fine – if not better this year. We’ve upgraded our RB and run blocking and the rest of the weapons are still on the team.
Just out of curiosity...how have we upgraded our run blocking.
(I’m assuming the Quinn is primarily a backup next year).
"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!
by PosterNutbag on Apr 26, 2009 2:08 PM MDT up reply actions
according to the know it alls, Quinn is the top blocking TE in the draft, so I’d consider that an upgrade, as he’ll see action in short yardage at least — and I’ll think we’ll see Graham more this year.
Especially when we trade Scheffler for a 3rd
once the draft is completed. Yes, I’m just assuming this happens. I think Quinn + Graham is immediately going to make us a serious threat in the redzone.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2009 2:11 PM MDT up reply actions
according to McD’s news conference it doesn’t sound like they are trading Schef .. and no point to right now anyway, trade him at next years draft.
Besides, I think the Eagles drafted a TE a bit ago.

Harrell started all 12 games despite breaking the fingers in his non-throwing hand in nine different places. He completed 406 of his 568 passes (71.5-percent) for 4.747 yards and 41 touchdowns compared to seven interceptions

Why do Islanders fans dislike the Rangers?
The Rangers have made the Islanders look good for many decades. Your team has done a lot better job of developing and RETAINING young talent.

by Arctic Bronco on Apr 26, 2009 2:38 PM MDT up reply actions
Well...
First of all, you can go to a Rangers/Ducks game and still hear chants of “Potvin Sucks”. The Rangers will always be Enemy No. 1 – there’s no way around that. As for retaining young talent, the Islanders are just now deciding to do so after about 15 years of just giving it away.
by Douglas A. Lee on Apr 26, 2009 2:41 PM MDT up reply actions
The Anti-Potvin crusade
saved the Rangers from looking at their own shortcomings. Thank goodness we didn’t have to crtically examine all of our stupid trades of young talent, that would have been very demoralizing.

In an innovative cost cutting move, the new Denver FO announced that all scouts would be terminated immediately. Since all the 2010 picks will be traded for several 7th round picks and “an extra large man” to be named later, no further scouting services will be needed.

Stryker Sulak
best name in a while. Raiders have still had a head-scratching draft but you have to like that pick.
Though it does make me think of “Airplane”.
So right now we just have
that Nose Tackle that Nolan picked up from his old team in FA, right? Any backups?

And we're playing Roulette
with the front 7, switching guys we already have and hoping they were just misused in a bad scheme last year? Is that right?

J"Vonne Parker is the other NT
Ron Fields is 1st string right now. Powell might back up at NT, but he’s also a good fit at DE
Hillis/Moreno in '09
Thanks.

Actually, Fields was doing well last year
They kept moving him after Nolan left – he was the first player Nolan called.

I'm not sure there will be that many yards left out there after Selvin gets his 2000....

Comp picks
are for a net loss in free agency
in other words, if you sign fewer significant players via FA than you lose, you’ll get comp picks in the next year’s draft

I had a thought about the defensive picks that I found appealing.
I guess if Nolan and McD are planning on blitzing their arses off this season then you’d want to be sure that you are stacked at DB. Particularly with the ballhawk nature of the guys they selected, it makes sense if the goal is to force a lot of errant throws. Also, they got some DBs that can come up and stuff the run when necessary.
"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!
There goes Bernard Scott
he looked good in that write up the other day

this will be a big test for him to see if he has really cleaned up his act

I am happy to see the guy get a shot...
Gnarly is right… the write-up the other day persuaded me… this late in the draft he is certainly worth the risk.
Andre and Rey might be another story…

I hate this pick..
I understand taking a flier on a late-round QB, but Brandstater floats the ball on anything deeper than a 15 yard route.
