Denver Broncos Select David Bruton, DB from Notre Dame

Yet another DB to add to the backfield, and it makes you wonder just how much confidence Denver has in the current crop.
Bruton's Scouting Report
Strengths: Ideal NFL size with reasonable bulk...terrific natural athlete...natural center fielder type...good long speed...above average zone coverage abilities...willing in run support...team leader...offers a lot of special teams value...attacks the ball at the highest point...
Weaknesses: Too stiff to handle man coverage...quickness in a short space is just adequate...needs to be less aggressive...ball skills are just marginal...needs to be nastier when attacking the run...
Overall: David Bruton is a better athlete than a football player at this point. He has good size and speed, but needs to add some bulk and player tougher when attacking the run. His ball skills are just average, and he struggles to matchup with the quickest receivers. He likely profiles best as a center field free safety, though he is likely be suited for a backup role initially. He does have the ability to be a contributor on special teams.
One thing is for sure, if any of these guys pan out sooner rather than later, Denver will have lots of options when it comes to structuring rosters, and more importantly, contracts.

ST Only
They must see some serious special teams ability in this guy. I hope that they do with Samie Lee Hill and Kyle Moore (personal favorite) going within three picks after.
ShootOut Every Game?
How can you sign 3 starters in free agency to a good amount of money, all of which should play well for at least a couple more years, then draft replacements in the same draft? How if you only have one area of concern, this would make sence, but not when your LB’s and DL are not even close to ideal for the new Def let alone the old Def you ran. Our only DT was a backup on a average Def last year. We have no experienced 3-4 LB’s on the entire roster and aren’t drafting stud athletes to start the learning curve on. Is McD thinking the Offense will score so many points our DB’s will have to rotate to keep fresh as the opposing O will be throwing like mad? The Running Backs and DB’s, we’ll be the deepest of any team in the league. Dline and Oline depth one of the weekest.

THIS IS CRAZY! we have absolutly no one on are d-line. you can have the best CB is history but if you cant get to the QB, it is mute!
either way. i trust (i think) Mcdaniels and the front office.
hmm...
interesting pick… one thing is for sure….McD/X-man have their own list and really could care less what the “experts” have to say… as with anything, time will tell….
I hope McKillop is still on the board when we pick next….
Beware the wrath of a patient adversary.

I think a lot of people are losing site of the fact that a lot of 3 / 4 teams end up with somewhere along the lines of 6 DB’s on the field at certain parts of the game..
I find some of the choices a little unusual but i understand some of what they are trying to achieve.
If we can find a decent rotational NT anywhere in this draft everything else i’ll be reasonably happy with.
older FAs are a bit of an injury risk
so I understand wanting some depth, but still I was hoping for a little more variety.
From a ND Fan
as an Irish fan, and having seen Bruton play every game let me comment …
He’s a demon tackler.. he doesn’t miss his man. He’ll be great on special teams, first guy down the field and like I said he won’t miss. He’s a very good leader as well.
The downside is that he couldn’t cover a 3rd grader.. but is above avg on reading the play from the Safety position. Think of him in the John Lynch mold without as much talent.
He’ll be the guy on ST coverage, with some spot run duty as a Safety stopper.
Thanks for the insight, H&N! :-)

potential
Bruton is one I’ve had my eye on. He’s a terrific athlete, a very good STer, so he can a major contribution immediately as a gunner, but he has the potential to eventually develop into a starter Free Safety, too. He’s a converted track star so he’s still learning football. Scott Wright has been very high on him for some time. He’s a project but he’s a very worthwhile one. He’s also a physical S who can contribute in run support, and his ability projects him as eventually being a good coverage Safety but that’s where he needs work. Very good size.
There’s a lot of new Broncos profile — leadership, attitude, work ethic, etc. Personally, I appreciate the fact that he raised his son while competing and completing his degree.

Read the strengths section on him, it sounds very good.
I thought Barrett
was our "project safety’ and he played well against Gonzo last year which as a 7rd (I think) from last year was a very nice sign of potential to me. But as for ST, alot of help would be appreciated their so I would be happy if your right their.

I am surprised with us picking DBs.
I mean I thought we would have at least tried to get a LB with one of those picks. Can’t say much about the players because I don’t know anything about them. I guess I’ll wait til camp starts to get a better view of the guys we got.
