Draft Thoughts

Star-divide

A few things are becoming clear to me:

  1. The Broncos are not too concerned with the QB position.  They feel that the Simms/Orton monster can take care of business, especially so with the addition of a feature back.  Hillis/Moreno is going to be good.
  2. The secondary was seen as a gaping wound-hole on this team.  And why not?  Every player in the secondary is getting either near retirement or near the end of their contract.  Dawkins, while a good pickup, is very old:  he will be able to impart wisdom on the likes of Barrett, Bruton, and McBath as they take over as the safeties of the future.  Goodman and Bailey are both getting old, and we released Bly.  Even if we are satisfied with Goodman as our number two, are you really satisfied with Williams and Bell taking the rest of the CB positions?  Apparently the Broncos are not, and McBath adds another youngster in there who can be groomed by the experienced and (at least in Bailey's case, don't know about Goodman) eminently knowledgeable starters.
  3. Richard Quinn.  I've heard some good comments, some bad comments, and some "who IS this?" comments.  In my opinion, the broncos may be setting up the magic three tight end experiment.  Putzier is, and likely always was, roster fodder, a backup plan.  However, Graham and Quinn are elite blockers.  Graham is also excellent in the passing game.  Scheffler (IMO) is a good blocker who is a star in the passing game.  Imagine a three tight end set that has basically two extra tackles, and legitamate ability for all three tight ends to catch a pass.  That is a red zone offense I personally drool for.
  4. Seth Olsen:  we definitely needed to adress some O-Line depth with the age of Wiegmann.  Olsen appears to be more of the G/T guy than the G/C type, so this portends either Hamilton sticking around and moving to center when Wiegs is done, or that Licks-ten-tigers is seen as the center of the future, which he may be.  I think this pick is great value, this guy may not be IDEAL as a zone blocker, but he certainly was undervalued by other teams.
  5. Lack of DT.  The Broncos have two people on the roster with legitimate NT size, and Thomas, Powell, Peterson and Clemons who are 4-3 DTs, perhaps 3-4 DEs.  The Broncos apparently saw enough at the minicamp that made them feel the DT position was set to go for the still veiled-in-secrecy hybrid defense.  A versatile guy who can play down and up in Ayers was picked, and please, don't worry about this "one year starter" garbage.  In his junior year he still led the team in tackles for loss.

I am pretty satisfied with the draft so far.  I wasn't initially too pleased with Moreno, but I also knew in my bones that it was going to happen, knew for a few months even, so it was pretty easy to get over.  There have been several trades, one of which is definitely lost us some value, and it will obviously be at least a couple of years before we can grade the draft, but right now I'm feeling alrighth about this.  The team knows what is here and what needs to be here, it knows what are positions are strengths, and where there are stop-gaps.  There is clearly a plan.

Draft Trades

I’m still trying to feel good about the draft. However, Quinn would have lasted through round 3, there was no need to move up. Then, McD gave a 6th to move up 8 spots in the 5th to get McKinney at #141. Dallas, 2 spots later at #143, only gave up a 7th to move up 13 spots in the 5th. Think the other GMs are taking advantage of the young Broncos FO?

don't think we can feel good about the draft right now

We do not yet understand the logic or the vision behind the choices.

We do not yet know how the draft picks and the veterans will mesh.

We don’t yet know how well the coaches and players will gel.

We don’t yet know how quickly the players will master the new offense and defense.

Seems to me it’s a bit early to start trying to make sense of the draft and determine if we can feel good or bad about it.

Good post

Agree with a lot of what you said. I was satisfied with Moreno though, I liked that pick =)
