How our 2009 Draft shapes the Team
So I have been looking more and more at both what New England has done this year and past and also what we are doing this year. The more I look at it the more I come to believe that this year is the year we are gearing up for something big. Think about the school of thought McDaniels comes from, We will not pay big money for anyone regardless of who you are. Now look at the contracts coming up in the next few years, Champ Bailey, Brandon Marshall, Daniel Graham and a few others. I will add more thoughts but lets look at the depth we have and the possible thought process here.
Quarterback:
Projected Starter: Kyle Orton
Depth: Chris Simms, Tom Brandstater (Draft Pick)
We have three guys here who will do their job, get the ball to the right guy and don't turn it over. Are they superstars? No are the competent players? Yes the draft pick tells me that this is the "easiest" position for McDaniels to replace.
Running Back:
Projected Starter: Peyton Hillis
Depth: Knowshon Moreno(Draft Pick)/ Correll Buckhalter/ JJ Arrignton/ LaMont Jordan/ Selvin Young/ Ryan Torain/ Andrew Pinnock
I think afew guys get their walking papers after camp starts but if you look at this there are three types of back and they all have competition. Selvin and JJ for scat Correll and Knowshon for spell and Hillis/ Torain and Jordan for Power. Pinnock is a FB by definition but he could be challenged by Jordan for that spot too. needless to say, if you dont live up you can kiss you horse helmet goodbye.
Wide Receiver:
Projected Starter: Brandon Marshall/ Eddie Royal
Depth: Brandon Stokely/ Jabar Gaffney/ Jayson Foster/ Chad Jackson/ Matt Willis/ Kenny McKinley (Draft Pick)
There are a lot of receivers here and honestly they wont all stay but with the change in scheme and the proposed switch to muti receiver looks we could keep as many as six on the list. I think Willis and Foster are the odd men out.
Offensive Tackle:
Projected Starters: Ryan Clady/ Ryan Harris
Depth: Tyler Polumbus/ Tyler Gorin/ Clint Oldenberg
This group will probably have only one depth guy stay on the list. As a rule we have only suited up 8 O Line guys for game dayso we wont keep too many tackles. I dont see a change in starter at all and Polumbus seems the depth chart guy to me.
Offensive Guard:
Projected Starters: Ben Hamilton/ Chris Kuper
Depth: Mitch Erickson/ Matt McChesney/ Pat Murray/ Seth Olsen (Draft Pick)
Draft pick tells me that Coach didnt like the depth we had. Olsen will probably be the depth guy on game day.
Offensive Center:
Projected Starter: Casey Weigman
Depth: Kory Lichtensteiger/ Blake Schlueter (Draft Pick)
Weigman did well last year anchoring the line with veteran presence.Lichtensteiger can play guard as well and should suit up this year. Blake tells me that Weigman's contract negotiations may not be gonig well.
Tight End:
Projected Starter: Daniel Graham
Depth: Tony Scheffler/ Richard Quinn (Draft Pick)
Tight end is one of the best positions we have. Graham is silently one of the best TE's in the game. No one blocks like him, and if he cant teach Mr. Quinn how he plays his game we coudl have another stud in the making. Tony is a different style of player than the other two but can hold his own against a LB/S is protection.I don't see a change in starter here.
Defensive End:
Projected Starters: Elvis Dumervil/ Tim Crowder
Depth: Robert Ayers (Draft Pick)/ Jarvis Moss/ Ryan McBean/ Kenny Peterson/ Darrell Reid
Someone might kill me for who I put as the starter but I see a lot of rotation between guys at this position.
Defensive Tackle/ Nose Tackle:
Projected Starters: Ronnie Fields (3-4) / Marcus Thomas (4-3)
Depth: Carlton Powell/ Nic Clemons/ Matthias Askew/ J'Vonne Parker
Once again I think there is a lot of rotation here. Some of these guys may see some time at DE as well.Look for a trade or some CFA's to be added.
Linebacker:
Projected Starters: DJ Williams/ Andra Davis/ Boss Bailey (4-3) Wesley Woodyard (3-4)
Depth: Spencer Larsen/ Louis Green/ Mario Haggan
A CFA could be added here and that coudl be good. There is a lot going here with the transition to a 3-4 and we will see a lot of rotation again.
Cornerback:
Projected Starters: Champ Bailey/ Andre Goodman
Depth: Jack Williams/ Josh Bell/ Rashod Moulton/ Alphonso Smith (Draft Pick)
I think we will stay with five so goodbye to Moulton. Look for Smith to start at Nickle with Williams and Bell as depth.
Safety:
Projected Starters: Brian Dawkins Renaldo Hill
Depth: Josh Barrett/ Vernon Fox/ Herana-daze Jones/ Darcel McBath (Draft Pick)/ David Burton (Draft Pick)
I think that Fox and Jones are cut and that Burton goes to the practice squad. The back ups will be McBath and Barrett. That being said I coudl see Dawkins switching to SS. That would create a few problems though so I don't know
Okay thats what I have pre CFA signings. Tell me what you think...

McDaniels meant it when he picked him at 12...
Although I’d love to see F250 making the first runs this season, I think Moreno will most of the heat and Hillis will be a red zone/blocker/3rd or 4th and 1 guy.

Im also thinking
In the 3-4 alignment…Ayers and Marcus Thomas as the 2 defensive ends with Thomas….and DOOM with the rush linebacker spot
On To Victory!!!
Hard to predict how it will go!

Good post JT.
This is timely as I for one was wondering what is happening. When I see you structure our lineups, I think that this is doable. Our guys need some structure and discipline and on Defense there will be discipline. Nolan is a superb coordinator. The more I think about it, I can see how well Ayers will work in our scheme.
I am seeing
a lot of planning ahead with contracts coming up we need a little leverage to keep salaries low

Jon, as a former collegiate Head Coach
I made depth charts every week for the current team and projecting possible recruits.
I LOVE this stuff! Keep ‘em coming. I hope we can revisit it at the outset of Training Camp.
Rec’d
new 3-4 scheme
Doom wont play d-end, the linebackers will be Doom, Davis, Dj, and Ayers in the 3-4

Jon this is the same comment I'm about to make on a third post...
If some of you experience Deja vu—its my fault not yours….
.
I have a thought on our front seven. Maybe we have the players already—maybe the problems with the last two years was not players—maybe it was bad schemes and lack of direction.
.
I know I’ve said this before and it may be getting old but I think Carlton Powell may end up being a great NT. Lined up with Marcus Thomas we have two really great atheletes. Jarvis Moss gets a shot at LB with DJ, Woodyard, and Ayers That only leaves us one player short of a really great front seven.
.
.
If McDaniels and Nolan bring in a good scheme—our defense could really surprise us this year.
.

Guardian of the Gate to La La Land!
Little, Wright, Atwater, Davis, and Sharpe...
Why are they not in the Hall...I just don't understand.
I agree.
He plays with great leverage, hand placement and lower body strength. He was a great anchor in college versus the run. Plus he can probably add weight, but with his skills its not nearly as necessary as many people think.
"You can make mistakes, but you are not a failure until you blame others for those mistakes." -John Wooden
Man, despite all this draft talk
…it sure is good to see names like Clady, Harris, Dumervil. I’ve been buried in all this draft talk and all these collegiate names. Just seeing that is worth it :) Good old draft success :)
Nicely done, JT
I was thinking that at this point, we really have two LB positions – ILB and OLB. While one or two might work in at both – DJ? (McD said something about him, and I thought he said OLB weakside, but I’m told that it was weakside ILB – does anyone have the reference?) At any rate, if we are in a 3-4 base formation, a possible breakdown:
NT – Fields, Parker (Powell?)
DEs – Reid, Thomas, Powell?, Askew, Petersen, Clemons, (Ayers? We don’t know yet) McBean
Starters – Thomas, Powell/Ayers
It’s good depth, if we can come up with a couple of starters in Thomas and perhaps Powell/. Of course, when we go 4-3, it’s quite different and you have Ayers, Crowder, Reid, etc at DE.
Linebacker:
OLB: Doom, DJ (although the reference might change that) Crowder, Robert Ayers (Draft Pick)/ Jarvis Moss, Reid Boss Bailey
Projected starters? you’ve got me. Gonna be a great TC
ILB Projected Starters: DJ Williams/ Andra Davis/
Depth: Spencer Larsen/ Louis Green/ Mario Haggan/Wesley Woodyard (3-4)
If we go 4-3 I suspect that it’s going to be DJ weakside, Larsen MLB and Bailey/Woodyard Sam. Mike could also be Woodyard, especially if he starts at ILB.
Just a few thoughts.
Hillis/Moreno in '09
I think your defensive scheme is off
Think 5-2:
1-NT – Fields/Parker (Powell?)
2-DT – Thomas & Peterson rotating with Clemons, Askew, McBean
2-DE/LB – Doom & Reid/Crowder, possibly Ayers (word is Moss may be a bust; we’ll have to see)
2-LB – Davis & Williams with Woodyard and Bailey in for different looks Larsen in reserve
2-CB – Bailey & Goodman backed by Bell, Williams, and Smith
2-S – Dawkins & Hill backed by Barrett, Fox, McBath and Burton
It’s not overwhelming but I don’t expect us to try to be overwhelming. We will bend between the 20s and stiffen in the red-zone; no cheap deep, and when the D&D is right we will blitz the daylights out of the QB and try for the pick. It is a huge upgrade from last year.

He probably will be at times...
my point is that everyone projects these players onto a scheme that we probably won’t be playing. We need to be thinking in terms of the roles these players fulfill instead of static positions for them to play. Boss is a fast LB with good coverage skills. When the situation call for a fast LB with good coverage skills that’s how we will use him. Davis is a slow LB but a great run stuffer. When we need a run stuffer and we’re not concerned about size you will see Davis in their.
Our defense would probably best be described as a 5-4 (with only 7 in at any time) but that gets a bit hard to wrap your brain around.

Hey Bear... isn't this fun?
I know I have made similar comments on other posts, so I suppose I am following in MC’s footsteps…
I really do not think anyone should pigeon hole the defense into any particular scheme. Let people call it what they want – 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 3-3-5,5-4 – who cares? Regardless of what it is called it boils down to playing sound defense and having the players on the field that will give us the best chance to win given the wide array of situations the team will inevitably find itself in.
We are going to stop the run, prevent the big play, get turnovers and perform well on special teams so our potent offense has as short of a field as possible! That is how you score points my friend!

Not worried so much about losing
I really have been concerned over the last few years about having a team with too much of a losing attitude or lack of character – it’s not about losing per se. A lot of analysis has gone into the skills of the players drafted, but I am hoping that McD’s insight with be about the intersection of skill and character.
In the end, only one team each year gets to win the SB – that can’t mean only one team was worthy of having supportive fans or that only the fans of one team will enjoy the season.
I wrote this for another thread, but having written Iit suddenly realized how much it was bothering me – what do you all think?
“If the team loses during this next very tough season, I am prepared for it – but I want a team that I feel played their guts out – team-wide – every game. Falling flat on our asses and then not really getting back to a standing position by the end of games with the Chargers, Chiefs and – god forbid! – the Raiders – I just can’t take that again.”
"
Exactly!
how the heck can you be flat – at home – against a division rival – with a playoff birth on the line?

Now that's the team spirit...
exactly the point I was trying to make in:
“A Disturbing Trend”
You simply can’t root for a team based solely on W/L, after SWG’s comment above sounds like he’s coming around to the same conclusion!!!

Scrappers and Fighters
Are what I want to see. If we lose against all those great teams on the schedule, I want to see some knock-down, drag-out games.

Pigskin FA Pickups
Sir, you’re off the start line pretty damned quick, but that’s exactly what we need to do to grab any of these FAs. A lot of the so-called draft gurus actually had the Broncos taking Beckwith in the 3rd or 4th, and King reminds me of that high motor Rams DE (name escapes me, but blond perm going on!). Quan Cosby woudl be another great option at PR/KR to take some pressure off Eddie, and Gano would offer some competition to Prater, which is all I think he needs to focus. Remember, Elam raved about Prater before he was shown the exit. But that still doesn’t address the lack of bodies in the defensive front seven. Baker may be an interesting option, but allegedly he has some personal issues, so given I don’t know them, I can’t really comment. Nice post though. Let’s hope we see some of them drop into our laps! Bye from Northern Ireland!
