4-3 to Stay One More Year
We have Thomas and Powell to play the tackle positions; Doom and Ayers to play DE; Woodyard and DJ at OLB, and Andra Davis in the middle. Without a starting huge NT Denver may want to stay with the 4-3. We have the makings of a solid line, especially if Powell plays the run as well as advertised. He maybe our best "rookie". Think about it. The 3-4 may be a year away.

I think it's going to be a mix up this year...
and next year will be full on 3-4. Nolan’s scheme is 3-4 so I believe he’s going to be implementing that this year, but I don’t think they will get all the way with it…Unless of course they are seeing things among the team now that they really like as a 3-4

Nice point
At minimum, it certainly meshes with the HC’s stated intent of mixing the schemes. I hadn’t though through how our personnel would fit the 4-3 — thanks for spelling that out. Although I’m not super excited about all of those players in that alignment, it would seem to be a modest improvement over last year, especially given our upgraded secondary. We might at least stop a few more runs and apply a little more pressure. But the jury remains out on Carlton — here’s hoping.

and there are other NT options through the CFA and FA
I think given the “amoebic” nature of the offense and defense that’s being installed, we may be seeing a lot of different looks, hence the incredibly strong emphasis on “versatile” players in the draft.
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.
not enough beef for the 3-4
it’ll look like last season’s experiment if they go full 3-4. still looking for a nt and de’s to fit the positions. this would be the smallest 3-4 since the orange crush, although o-linemen were much, much lighter back then, as well as d players. that talent level isn’t there, either. i think they should put the change on hold until they get the pieces in place, if they ever do.

2009-year of the secondary?
We are going 3-4
I would bet on it.
I believe we have the personnel. Ronnie Fieldds is the guy NO ONE talks about, and he will be our best FA pick up…and probably one of the best in FA total.
He is our NT, and he is the reason we did not even look at Raji.

All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????
I have to admit boydy...
I severely overlooked Ronnie Fields.
I got bored earlier and was looking over my roster sheet and decided to do some homework on Fields. He’s a pretty good player. I think he just needs the right scheme. Almost in the same sense of Bill Walsh’s 49ers, if Nolan can find a way to utilize the guys they already have, we could have a seriously potent defense this year.

Exactly CJF...
Hes still a young guy and is coming into himself.
Some reports that came out when we traded for him called him the steal of free agency.
His play has got consistently better, and he was starting to blossom last year. He is a hard worker, good locker room guy and a good technician. I think he IS our NT, and a lot of people are looking past him, which I think is a mistake!
Nice post my friend!

3-4
I think the 3-4 will be our base formation. However, I am telling you that our tweener backs will line up on the line at times which will be confused for a 4-3 by many announcers when in reality they are just mixing things up.
Don't jump off the cliff but if the guys next to you are loud and annoying try to push them off.
good point there
i just hope to hell we blitz, and don’t play soft. i don’t want to hear about talent/pressure deficiency as an excuse ever again. but it’s the run i’m really concerned with. the middle of the defense. we are going to give up a ton of size on the line this season in our matchups, the selected interior linemen and de’s have to be very, very strong for their size. possible? yes. probable, i just don’t know, but i’m hoping. either way, nowhere to go but up. i have to admit my patience on the d-line, in particular, is wearing thin. i’ve been waiting since trevor price was let go, although the browncos were pretty good in hindsight, right?
the past 2 years have been painful to watch on this side of the ball, getting gashed for 10-yard runs up the gut. we should improve, definitely, but can we keep linemen off our backers with 3 undersized(especially the new de) down-linemen. if they do what you are saying up front, creeping up to the line on run downs, that is a good method of counterbalancing. i believe in nolan to do the best he can with what he has, i just hope it is enough. good point with the scheming though, kfustad. i am sure glad to have nolan & co. in charge, now. he may be our most important defensive addition, at least for this season.

Running Straight at the 3-4 is always a concern. If you can do it. I think Nolan is going to be the answer here. If he can create enough traffic in the middle and get some sure tackling out of these guys, Davis anyone?, I think they can drastically improve against the run.
I am interested to see if SD is going to be the same running team as years gone bye. The 3-4 should do better at stopping outside running. Oakland has a stout run offense but suffers in other areas and I have no idea where KC is going to be with a disgruntled LJ. So this is going to be interesting…

Agree with you on that one Kfs
If you look at the type of defense that McD is bringing to us, the front seven line up in a ton of different sets, 4 down, 3 down, there were even a couple of formations that had 2 down, guys blitzing, guys dropping back in coverage, it’s amazing that the players can keep it all straight.
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.
What I see is
a base 3-4 as has been mentioned. Look at all the bodies McDaniels and Nolan are bringing into camp. There’s loads of competion going to happen at all positions. Only the best and brightest are going to make this squad. Now that is something to be excited about.

Amen
I like this idea of choosing the best guys rather than drafting the available guys and being forced to use them. I mean it is really starting to grow on me.

sounds like the method of champions!

Don't think so
All of our undrafted free agent DL are classic 3-4 linemen. The 2 DEs are clearly 5 technique guys, not to mention the huge noseguard.
