When comparing the numbers of these players there are a number of conclusions that can be drawn. The first 2 guys are very good all around football players. The bottom 2 seem to be very good CB's, just not all the skill that the first 2 have. All of them have amassed some impressive numbers through out their collegiate careers and should transition nicely into the NFL. Now it is time to reveal the names:
Player 1: Alphonso Smith
Player 2: Malcolm Jenkins
Player 3: Vontae Davis
Player 4: Sean Smith
The biggest point that I am trying to make is that Alphonso Smith was a steal at where we got him. If he was a couple of inches taller he could have gone before his fellow Wake Forest Alum, Arron Curry. For all those doubters out there that think this was the dumbest trade in the world, take a look at what a player has done in college. He is a tremendous all around talent that has proved everything he can at the collegiate level. He can immediately come in and upgrade the defense and learn from the best corner to ever play in the NFL. The Broncos defense was terrible at getting the football last season and he got the ball 33 times in 4 seasons. If he can come close to that in the pros he will make everyone a believer.
Also a lot of people are saying that his size at 5'9" automatically make him a bust. I looked around and found that the majority of the corners in this league are below 6'. Then I checked the Pro Bowl roster from 08 and only Charles Woodson and Nnamdi Asomigha were over 6'. Here are the rest:
- Antoine Winfield, Vikings: 5'9, 180lbs
- Asante Samuel, Eagles: 5'10", 185 lbs
- Ronde Barber, Tampa Bay: 5'10", 184 lbs
- Cortland Finnegan, Titans: 5'10", 188 lbs
- Darrelle Revis, Jets: 5'11", 204 lbs
- Alphonso Smith, Broncos: 5'9", 193 lbs (future pro bowl CB)
That is 5 out of 7 pro bowl CB from 2008. Apparently short CBs can not only make it in the NFL but can also excel.

nice
like the breakdown. helps put it in perspective. maybe do a follow up one that matches one or two of these guys to top corners in the league in the last couple of years
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.
no offense, but didn't Sean Smith convert from WR to CB in college
his numbers may not really be that indicative.
"Me fail english, that unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum
"Duffman is thrusting in the direction of the problem" - Duffman
"Good, bad, I'm the one with the gun, A-hole" - Ash from Army of Darkness
Smith
I put Smith on there because there was a lot of talk about him on MHR before the draft and a lot of the mocks floating around had him going in the first. He is also 6’3’ and wanted to compare the other players to a tall guy. To answer your question he did convert to CB late in his career, that also why I put the games played stat on the list.

So...
….is that games played as a corner (for Smith)?
Growing older is not for sissies. Jack Palance
Sean Smith
I went back and reexamined his stats. So he played his first 2 seasons as a receiver totaling 14 games played and 129 all purpose yards. His final two seasons he played CB and the defensive numbers apply to the 26 games he played at that position. Hopefully that helps a little.

Sweet.
Another hear-say myth debunked!

One of the best posts I have read in the past week or so.
Great breakdown, great format.
COme on MHR, this needs to be rec’d.
Great job mate!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????

Great breakdown
Stas that I like to see, and really helps put Smith into perspective as to what the Bronco Scouts were looking at!
Good post!
About playing against Joe Namath "He's the best in the Business, he can do everything, but I've never seen a Quarterback yet that can throw on his back." - Dave Costa 1969
I'm hoping for the best from him
And I really appreciate your impressive stat breakdown, but Smith is one of the picks about whom I continue to have nagging doubts.
I Think some of his best work might come a Nickle
A team can be in the Nickle formation almost as much as Base. At nickle Smith will have a lot of opportunities to make plays because he gets the seams and middle.
definitely
at least early on. But who knows, maybe we have ourselves a D version of Eddie Royal here!

What stands out to me is the 40 PD
40? Are you kidding me. That says that teams often tested him, maybe becuase of his height, I don’t know, but that’s more than Malcom and Jenkins combined! You have to be good at positioning and be able to run with a reciever to break up that many passes don’t you?
I know everyone is saying that he is slow, but how fast do you need to be? It’s not like they are all running straight up field like a track meet, they zig and zag all over the place and it appears that Smith has the ability to stick with his opponent.
I’m very impressed. And, yes, you can colour me a homer if you like, I won’t take offense. Promise.

Malcom AND Jenkins combined?
so his first and last name combined to be his full name!!!!
just teasing u. i know what you meant
How important are measurables?
All I want to know(no) is if they have heart, desire and drive to be the best, regardless of stature. Some examples off the top of my head…Emmit Smith, Darrell Green,Barry Sanders and my favorite (small?man) Champ!!
Born: 1978/06/22 Age: 30
Height: 6-0 Weight: 192 …. definitely Rec’d
Darrell Green
5’9", 184 pounds. Zach Thomas and Jack Lambert were a couple more who were “too small for their position”.
Growing older is not for sissies. Jack Palance
love the Pro Bowler breakdown
I know Champ is 6’ 0", but seeing where the rest of the league’s best shake out was eye opening indeed! Nice job.

off topic
I also live in Montana right now and it is great to see some representation up here in the great white north (snowed almost a foot in the last couple days). But have to talk some trash I go to MSU and I checked your profile and saw that you are a Griz fan (BOO).

lol
And I live in Bozeman, can you believe it? I actually tacitly supported the Cats for quite awhile, having gone to MSU myself. However, my baby brother is now playing DT for the Griz, and for me it’s family first!
Besides, it’s fun rooting for a winner. ; )

see the thing is I do like Smith a lot
and think he should turn out to be a great player. i just still dont like the trade to get him. i know the trade talk has been done to death and that a first rounder next year has the same value as a second rounder this year. i know those facts. i just loved that we had two firsts in next years deep class and now it sucks that we don’t.
basically it comes down to I want Taylor Mays and now our odds of getting him have decreased by 1/32
