Chris Baker's HS Coach weighs in
Hey everyone,
I just received the following comment on my post over at Black Shoe Diaries, and thought it was so insightful that I had to share it in a followup blast to my post Welcome Aboard Chris Baker.
This is Chris Baker's high school football coach (and history teacher) responding to my question about Chris's issues at Penn State. Note that he talked with Chris just last night about joining Denver's D:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris Baker at Penn State
I was the Defensive Coordinator for Chris at Windsor (CT) H.S. in 2003 and 2004. Chris is a fine student athlete, I also taught him in History class. Basically at PSU he was accused of being in 2 on campus fights. I think enough of Chris that I wrote a character letter on his behalf. However, due to the expenses of the legal process, Chris pled guilty to misdemeanors with the understanding that he would be able to continue his career at PSU--however once all the sht hit the fan (ESPN doing report on PSU supposedly being out of control last summer on OUtside the Lines)--Paterno responded by kicking 2 players off the team, one being Chris. I felt that Chris was treated unfairly, however he thrived at Hampton.
I really believe that the charges against Chris were against the character that I had grown to appreciate while having him as a player and student.
i spoke to him last night and he is fired up to start with a clean slate. He is a FREAK of an athlete and I think will make people in Denver very happy for years to come.

Clearly, he felt it was important for us Bronco fans to have an accurate picture of a player he cares about very much as an athlete, student, and person.
This is about as good a testimonial as you could hope for, under the circumstances. There's still a lot of work to be done, but personally I'm going to be rooting very hard for this kid to become our long term answer at NT.

This is awesome
This should be linked to in one of the threads, as it seems FanPosts often get overlooked.

Done
I’ve actually updated my Welcome Aboard Chris Baker post with the same info — I just double posted as a new FanShot in case anyone missed it.

This is awesome that he responded on a Blog
This is very good insight from a person/coach that knows Chris before all the things that happened at PSU. I personally believe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and paid for it. He is not a bad kid and just needed a second chance. Now that he is with the Broncos I could see him being our starting NT in 2010 and maybe even this year. I think his so called character concerns are the reason he went undrafted because he is a freak of an athlete. Hopefully he comes in super motivated and proves to everyone that passed on him that he should have been a high draft pick

The other interesting takeaway for me
was what great fans PSU fans are. Black Shoe Diaries is a great blog, and I was very impressed that even though they were feeling a great deal of pain and embarrassment and anger over the way OTL sensationalized the program and completely disrespected their legendary head coach, even through all that they were still very supportive of this kid. That tells me pretty much everything I need to know.

I think we got a Steal!
…and am not worried about his ‘character concerns’ now at all!
WOOT! Go Broncos!

yep
You know, we have a pretty cool fan base. It’s so gratifying to see we’re able to accept this guy without uninformed, knee jerk reaction to a couple of dumb things that happened early at college. I just hope the local MSM is as accepting as we are. I want him to feel welcome and wanted!!

I said it before and it's just as true now...
He was brought in here for a reason, they obviously feel good enough about him to sign him post draft. I like him already.

I'm with you joe
Nobody can say for sure yet, of course, but I have a gut feeling about this guy

Thanks for the post broncosmontana
I like the way you went out and emailed the coach directly. Thanks and recommended.

He saw my post on Black Shoe Diaries and commented. Damn nice of him, if you ask me.

excellent due diligence BMT
and damn this Chris Baker…. This draft board destroying, reoccuring phantom at the edge of my vision, Chris Baker… This now blue and orange and wholly redeemable Chris Baker.
I hope he makes everyone regret discounting him as much as he is making me regret discounting him so far….
(I have an excuse though: I had to triage 200 players off my board so I would have enough time to cover them all.)

Thanks BMT
This is the kind of insight that puts players like Baker in perspective. Rather than the incessant rumor-mongering and easy bashing that tends to go around so much, this kind of reporting permits a deeper and more nuanced view of the student athlete and their situations. Rec’d – and thanked!

Baker at camp
I saw my post from the other site made it here and am really glad that it seems like Bronco fans are open to giving Chris a chance to prove what type of player and person he is. As I currently am coaching in Colorado (moved here last june for fiancee and took head job at Liberty HS in Springs) I am very excited that Chris landed in Denver. Talked to him a few hours ago and he told me he did well at mini camp and will be back out in a couple weeks…keep your eyes on him, could be a real steal and also I do not think character will be an issue at all.

Welcome to MHR, coach!
I can’t thank you enough for sharing your thoughts about Chris Baker. As you can see, it’s been a huge hit here, and we’re all wishing the best for him!
And please feel free to stop by anytime, even just to say hello! We have several coaches who stop by and contribute their expertise from time to time, running the gamut from Broncos history to the finer points of the 3-4 to great humor and camaraderie, and it really makes this site a special experience. We have a terrific set of contributing admins here and pride ourselves on facilitating open, upbeat discussions about all things Xs and Os, (not just limiting ourselves to our favorite team, of course!) so please consider this an open invitation to share in the discussions and debates! We’d love to have you!

Coach
I just did a piece on the man, and I hope that I got it right and did him justice – please let me know if there are any corrections. We look forward to his place on the Broncos. We have a few coaches here on MHR – I hope that you’ll spend some time with us as well. You’d certainly be welcome.
