MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #18
|
|
With the #18 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the DENVER BRONCOS select.... RB, KNOWSHON MORENO, GEORGIA
|
Denver Broncos (From Chicago Bears)
Round 1, Pick #18 overall GM Combat Chuk
|
Details of the pick after the jump...
From GM Combat Chuk: With Jay Cutler now gone, we're looking at a more balanced offensive attack. Peyton Hills while a fan favorite for starting tailback has a different plan for him besides tailback (Think H-Back). Knowshon was a major part in Georgia's offensive success, balancing out their vertical game with explosive speed and agility. His size calls back to a former Bronco RB by the name of Terrell Davis. He is of high character and his drive and competitiveness will be more than welcome on this drastically different Bronco team.
Commish's Thoughts: You know I love the pick. This guy is a team player, won't ask for more carries, can block, catch out of the backfield, and creates on his own, so the single-back formation will suit him nicely. He has the ability to rack of stats, but he will be happy to rack up wins with the rest of the team, but if you need a clutch performance, or when a hero needs to step up with the game on the line, don't be afraid to call Moreno's number. You won't regret it.

I agree with the need for a RB, not sold on Moreno though
Still like McCoy a lot more than Moreno, but time will tell. I think I would of went with that CB from Utah or Malcom Jenkins, maybe not a need but I think both would have a better value here.

the reason i like moreno
is that he seems so much more like the kind of running back who could be a star. he is very agile and electrifying. chris wells on the other hand just seems like the one who can be decent.

defense?!
6 rb’s, no nt. if we don’t address the defensive line now, i’m going to go nuclear. no next year, and we still need to draft a qb now, sometime. this is exactly what i am skeptical of with an “offense guy”. thank god this isn’t the real deal, but i feel it’s going to go this way. again. the more things change…

BJ Raji was already taken
I’m not convinced yet on Tyson Jackson. The next probably NT prospect would be Ron Brace which I hope falls to us in the 2nd round.

I agree
Takinga wait-and-see-how-far-he-drops stance on Jackson is a viable option. If someone grades him out high enough (I know I didn’t) then taking him at #18 is an option, but I would be more tempted to see if he could last to #48… There are at least 20 players still available who have better report cards and resumes than Jackson does, and Jackson and any number of good Dline and defensive players (Hood, Chung).
But of course, there should be some RBs that might go that far too, such as Greene and A.Brown, so it comes down to that T.Jackson grade.

wanting a guy around our pick to be a great defensive draft choice
is different from there actually being a good choice on the defensive line. We can’t force an identity onto any picks ahead of time. Yes, higher draft picks have a better chance of panning out, but the BEST draft picks have the BEST chance of panning out. It is important not to trap ourselves into tkaing a bad pick or risky layer just because we perceive that we can’t get better somewhere else.
You can ALWAYS get better.

I'm looking to next year's draft class of QB's.
So I agree. Defense now. QB next year.
McCoy, Bradford, Tebow, Harrell, Daniel. Possibilities abound.

Oh Snap!
I love Moreno and it would be a dream to see him in Denver, but not now. A year ago, for sure. He would have dominated in Shanny’s offense.
I only like this pick if we address the d-line with Jackson at 12, like Papi said.
I think there is a chance that McD and X would do this because it sounds like they are going to go with the best player available from McD’s interviews today.
I think the best thing to do if at all possible is to get 2 d-linemen in round 1. The chance to add depth and talent at our biggest weak spot is just too good to pass up.

I didn't want to say it was a 'bad selection' (because that's mean).
However, I think we need D line. I want us to use both 1st round picks on D line. Hell…I think we should use our first 4 picks on D line and the rest at LB.
I think Hillis is going to be a stud at RB…no need to add more.

according to McDaniels on 104.3 interview
you can’t have too many RBs. NE went through 6 or 7 last year, just like Denver. He isn’t done adding more yet, regardless of who teh starter is.
Just because he is a high round pick doesn’t mean you are obligated to give him more carries or touches than is right for the team to win in any given situation, and the nice thin about moreno is that he will be happy with 5 carries or 25 carries, there is no difference to him, as long as those carries give him a legitimate chnace to help the team get Ws.

The number of RBs currently on the roster
shouldn’t be the deciding factor as to whether we think we can upgrade the position or not. Absolutely none of those guys on the list can’t be improved upon.
As to whether it should be a first rounder or not, why not? Is it the money? Is it that they are too talented? Too risky? What round IS acceptable?

I am fan of this list.
Hillis
Jordan
Arrington
Buckhalter
Young – though, I would rather have T.Bell
Torain
This is as deep of a Backfield that you can have….. I say it is down right full of work horses. While it may lack star power, I definitely think that it is top tier in terms of depth.
With that said… I hope we draft Defense.

I think there are a couple of potential 'stars' there.
I think we are all stoked on Hillis and after hearing McD’s interview on 104.3 I think he’s stoked on Hillis too.
Torain still might be a pretty solid RB. I know Shanny was pretty high on him. What’d he say? Best back he’d seen since TD or something like that?
Arrington and Buckhalter may be decent…we’ll see.
Jordan is serviceable.
I think I’ve given up on Young.

In the fist round I only want to see
D-line, LB, SS or FS, and/or CB.
There should be enough talent available to pick the best DEFENSIVE player available at our picks and still come away with a solid. If not, TRADE DOWN and then go defense.
RB is not a big enough need (IMO) to justify a first round pick unless TD has a son that’s coming out this year ;)

think TD if it makes you feel better but that is the caliber running back we would be getting with this pick.

The best way to work Kyle Orton in to the system would be to give him a reliable running back who can pound it 20 times a game. Give Peyton Hillis the other 10 and I am good. :)

Not going to happen
Watch film of NE or listen to what McD said today. They will use a lot of different RBs. They will look for skillsets with each that create mismatches. All RBs will be expected to be able to do several things – run the ball, block, receive. They will use the RB pass more than we did. What they won’t do is use one guy to ‘pound the rock’
Please understand that I’m not against that approach. It just isn’t going to happen with Josh running the team.

Love the pick...
…but unless Denver trades up to try to land Sanchez, I’m predicting the all OSU first round for Denver. Jenkins (12), Lauranaitis (18). Both are poster children for the player McDaniels describes— versitile, smart, intense, and devoted to the team concept. If Jenkins goes to GB and Raji is gone as expected, I think they’ll go Moreno at 12, Lauranaitis at 18.

I don't see a RB that early
Josh said earlier Rb by committee. so I don’t see this pick to be a good one. But I would like to see us go for P. Chung or another Al Wilson type of line backer. I know this is to early for Chung, but I really want him. I like the intimidating look of Rey( would look sick in a Bronco uni) but as far as that I don’t know if he will be that good.

Chris Steuber Says:
I foresee a trade that will alter the face of the first round. I predict that the Broncos will trade their two first round picks (No. 12 and 18) to their division rival the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for the third pick overall. This would be another bold move for the Broncos this offseason, but identifying their next franchise quarterback is crucial for their future success.

I know I'm biased but...
Having seen every UGA game the last 2 seasons in person, I can tell you that Moreno has ‘it’.
That stupid crap that ESPN is always trying to answer? Well, he’s the rare breed. The line blocks harder when he’s in there. The linebackers are on their heels just a bit more. The WR make catches they don’t normally make. There’s a bit more buzz in the stands. The bourbon goes down just a bit smoother.
I know we need defense, but if Moreno’s still on the board at this point, it’d almost be a crime not to take him. We have a lot of picks in this draft to fill our immense D needs, but to pass on a guy like this would be a mistake.
by Hobnail_Boot on Apr 4, 2009 3:44 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I like the pick
The only position that is untouchable from the BPA approach right now is Offensive Tackle.
I know some of you want D-Line – but I think you have to be realistic – the talent at DE/DT this year is marginal in relation to the value of the pick. Using the #12 & #18 picks on players that are probably 2nd round quality is a long term strategy for disaster.

well said
agreed on OT, as we have two of the best bookends int eh league, and we already have two deep depth. We can still target the position somewhere, but it is the only area where a starter is wasted.

You bet
our needs and the talent to pick from are not a perfect match this year. With two picks in the top 20, using one for an unusual talent on offense is acceptable. If there was a better crop on the D line this year, I’d feel differently.

Oh, I hope the Broncos don't
pick a RB in the first round in real life. What a dastardly mistake that would be. If you have a strong offense and a miserable defense, where do you try to build? Seems a no-brainer to me . . .
Never argue with a fool, lest you take on his appearance. - my daddy
by AZDynamics on Apr 5, 2009 8:21 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
No-brainer?
The bottom line is, our offense is significantly less strong with Cutler gone, and we need to take the pressure off of our QB. Even if Orton pans out, look at what happened the years we won the SB: stellar QB and stellar RB. Besides, the defense is in a MUCH better position this offseason than last offseason, and it only got worse from there last year. If you don’t believe me, I would love to hear your ideas on how Dawkins and Hill are a downgrade from Manuel and McCree.
So, our offense is not as strong as you might think, and our defense is not as awful as you might think. What a difference an offseason makes.
