Broncos release Selvin Young

The Denver Broncos on Thursday waived running back Selvin Young, it was announced.

Young joined the Broncos in 2007 as a college free agent from the University of Texas. He played 23 games (13 starts) in two seasons with Denver, totaling 201 rushes for 1,032 yards (5.1 avg.) with two touchdowns and 38 receptions for 247 yards (6.5 avg.)

He hasn't been cut though.

Look through the list of cuts so far this year and argue a single one of them as being a “wtf” move. ;-)

I can't see it doing anything for us.

I don’t think it improved our team or made it worse but its the only one i could think of. I didn’t really see the reason behind the move and since I don’t see any real improvement i think its a “wtf” move.

by trumanj on May 1, 2009 9:08 AM MDT up reply actions

yeah, it was a wtf move...

but he was a Patriot….that means something obviously. McD is trying to change the culture in Denver and he is doing that by bringing in as many Patriots as possible. I can respect that….especially if they are leaders of men.

Maybe

McDaniels has reasons he hasn’t yet shared. Just because we go “wtf” doesn’t mean there’s not a reason- it could be for cultural reasons as Zappa says, or for other, not-obvious reasons we’re not privy to.

yes

Relax man!

McDaniels has already said he likes the versatility that Hillis brings, and they’ll be looking for creative ways of getting him the ball. I don’t think cutting Selvin Young means ANYTHING for Peyton Hillis.

But yes, if Hillis is cut, I will STRONGLY disagree with the move. Deal? :o)

2000 Yards...

in his career you mean?

Don’t get me wrong, I like SY, but he’s never going to be an every down back, and I don’t think he’s special enough to have many regrets about losing.

Moreno, Torain, and Hillis are all more talented younger backs. And Buckhalter (and maybe Jordan) are more experienced backups. Appreciate his time, though!

by underdog on Apr 30, 2009 5:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Why....

does Hillis come up everytime there is a Running Back discussion..? He was drafted as a fullback. He’s a prototypical fullback the likes of which we haven’t seen since Howard Griffith. He played Running Back because it was either him or Shanny suit up himself.

HILLIS IS NOT A RUNNING BACK!

That is all.

Other than the fact

that he was the most productive RB the Broncos had last year, and based on limited carries one of the most productive in the NFL, you have a good point.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Apr 30, 2009 4:20 PM MDT up reply actions

He was taken as a FB.

But he was a major rushing force in college (even as a FB), and Denver still made the conversion quickly. When he showed what he could do, he demonstrated his higher value at RB. Recently, McDaniels praised Hillis as a RB, which leads me to think that he is not only still a RB, but near the top of the pecking order.

one of the greatest HS RB’s in Arkansas history, if my memory serves correct. In fact, I believe he was recruited to ARK as a RB and started as a freshman while McFadden sat.

I think I read (here somewhere), that he was recruited by Ark U. to be a running back, did a good job as a freshman.

Then Jones & McFadden came in & he was asked to move to FB & did a great job there too! He sure is fun to watch! We haven’t had a guy that drags tacklers for a few yards for a long time, & I loved it!!! Can’t wait to get all these new folks in to see what they can do!!!

by Pmac54 on Apr 30, 2009 7:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Which should tell you...

Hillis being the most productive runner last year should tell you what the potential of all the other running backs was worth.

Hillis will play a lot this year and probably very little of it at RB. He is the only FB left on the roster and McDaniels has already stated there are a variety of ways he can and will be used.

This is why we want him to play RB

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48HAiaY3vps

after Moreno I would say Hillis should be our #2 back. He can be our Lendale or Moreno’s Chris Johnson or our Johnathon Stewart to Moreno’s Deangelo Williams.

As HT has said in some of his other posts, we’re probably going to be running out of a single back formation a lot this year. that means we wont even be using a full back much. Hillis proved last year especially in the Jets game that he can run as just a single back.

I love Hillis and what he brings to the table and I think it would be a shame to see him in anything but a RB role

HILLIS IS NOT GOING TO GET CUT

I have heard this on more than one occation and it is complete nonsense. The Broncos will keep 6 to 7 running backs this season. McD has nothing but great things to say about Hillis and is excited to utilize his versitility. With Pinnock cut yesterday, Marques Branson is the only other fullback type we have and he is more of an H-back. Hillis is here to STAY!!! See here for a quality write up on this topic here

As for Selvin, good luck my friend. You have skills no doubt, but you can’t make the club when your always in the tub.

by DBronx777 on Apr 30, 2009 4:27 PM MDT reply actions

If anyone gets cut it will be Torain...

he is a fan favorite, but he is also just a 5th round draft pick who can’t stay healthy. I just hope McD gives him one more year to make something happen.

by Tim Lynch on Apr 30, 2009 4:38 PM MDT up reply actions

At least some of Torain's popularity with the 'base

Comes from Shanny’s endorsement of him as a possible T.D.-style breakout late-round player.

I’m not sure how big a chance McD is willing to give a player based on his predecessor’s endorsement.

by OrangeTorpedo on Apr 30, 2009 4:53 PM MDT up reply actions

We also had a lot of research done on him around here that gave us hopes for him

but the injury concerns were there from the beginning and continue to be there, so I will have to trust McD in his player evaluations when the cuts start coming in later this reloading season

Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.

by Tim Lynch on Apr 30, 2009 5:05 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree with you

I don’t think much of Torain simply based on his inability to stay healthy. There is so much talent out there, it just doesn’t make sense to keep that type of player on the roster. Give someone who can stay healthy an opportunity.
And as you stated Torain is a Shanny guy, not a McD guy.

Denver may go one of two ways.

They may drop the FB position. I kind of doubt it, but that’s the new trend. I believe there is one NFL team that is going without a FB this year.

More likely (like many teams), Denver will simply phase the position out slowly. I expect a lot of 2 TE sets and 3 WR sets with a TE from Denver.

Despite his listing, I don’t expect Hillis at FB. I could be wrong.

by Steve Nichols on Apr 30, 2009 4:42 PM MDT up reply actions

To your point...

you can utilize a player like 2nd round draft pick TE – R. Quinn to play FB in certain situations. McD will use players with flexibility to fill multiple roles within different personnel packages (i.e. goal-line, short yardage, etc.) and save the roster spot that would be needed for a fullback.
I really like the progressive thinking of McD!

Torrain seems snakebit.

Every time the guy sets foot on the field, he shows great promise, and then something catastrophic happens. He may get one more chance to prove himself. For his sake, I hope he’s found the voodoo doll with his likeness and burned it.

As for Hillis, how do you even consider cutting a man who treats safeties as something less than a speed bump, and has hands like Fred Bilitnekoff? This guy is going to contribute.

We can’t really call it thunder and lightning, because Mreno doesn’t have elite breakeaway speed (like another Bronco back not so long ago), but he does have some moves.

Knowshon and Peyton will be more like dash and bash.

by jayrockstone on Apr 30, 2009 5:59 PM MDT reply actions

Dash and Bash - excellent!

Being a Bulldog fan (more accurately, being married to one), I saw plenty of Moreno and am happy we have him. Am very anxious to see him work with our o-line. As for HIllis, thanks to purplesocks for the YouTube link above. You can see the great hands, great vision, and I loved seeing Hillis blow up people down field again. And yes, the salute too. Hillis = Power under control + A class act. Now that’s football!

P.S. I could’ve done without seeing the “groin” catch again though… ugh.

One report says he failed his physical

according to a medical report he can’t play because of his neck injury he sustained when he returned from his groin injury. He either needs his neck sugically repaired and will be ready in a few months or needs rehab and reeval in Sept. Either way the Broncos have too much at RB to wait. He has supposedly declined the surgical option which may lead to further problems down the road. I would guess they would be proposing a fusion.

because our backfield is pretty crowded. I think that Knowshon and Hillis will both be big parts of our offense. I think Moreno will be our main runningback, and Peyton will be moved everywhere around the field, confusing the defense. That’s the advantage of having a guy that is so versatile.
