MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #21

With the #21 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select....

WR, HAKEEM NICKS, UNC

Philadelphia Eagles

Round 1, Pick #21 overall

GM ejruiz

Details of the pick after the jump...

Star-divide

Best routes since Royal in 08.

From GM ejruiz:  The unexpected Jay Cutler trade and Denver’s subsequent pick of University of Georgia RB Knowshon Moreno at #18 left us scrambling a bit for an adequate choice at this spot. All of our other top targets were also picked up prior to our time on the clock and most of the remaining top prospects don’t quite fit our schemes; nevertheless, we still feel comfortable with our eventual choice. After all, the Eagles are a team with few – if any – truly glaring needs thanks to forward-thinking drafts in the past and the versatility of several key players. The void at offense tackle can be resolved internally if necessary, while RB and TE can be effectively addressed with later picks. Therefore, I felt at ease making a slight reach for what some may deem to be a luxury prospect.

As the quintessential possession receiver, Hakeem Nicks provides a skill set unlike any other in Philadelphia at that position. His presence should improve the WR corps as a whole by allowing the current members of that group to slide into roles more suited to their particular abilities. Moreover, we hope that QB Donovan McNabb appreciates this attempt to upgrade the weapons that surround him. Though he does not have all the elite tools to work with, Nicks more than makes up for that with exceptional skills. His lack of frontline speed is offset and then some by his reliable hands, disciplined route-running, impressive ball skills, outstanding awareness, overall toughness, and top-notch intangibles. We look forward to his often spectacular contributions for years to come.

Commish's Thoughts:  Solid pick, with solid reasoning.  Nicks 'feels' like an Eddie Royal type of player, and the only surprise to me is how popular he seems to be with analysts and the like, since usually his makeup is underappreciated.  Call it a testament to his production at UNC.

ON THE CLOCK

Minnesota Vikings are up next.  We are starting to get into the meat and potatoes of the draft, with each pick being more likely to be a sliding player, or long armed reach.  Will the Viking's GM be able to hold those forces at bay?

The deadline for this pick is NOON MST, April 6th.  As long as I receive the pick by that time it will be valid.  To send me the pick, just email me at the address shown in my profile.

Thanks!

He’s one of the few I actually like, too. What caught my eye was his high floor / low negatives.

very tirue there

the only two I am sold on are Nicks and Barden. I was on to barden before the hype but I still think he will pan out a a higher level than some other in the draft. I amjust not into harvin and crabtree is iffy to me

Right Pick For Philly

If they want to keep D-Mac in the fold, which I’m not 100% convinced that they do, they need to some real receivers (DeSean Jackson notwithstanding. I was screaming for the Broncos to pick Jackson last year, and they took Royal instead. Glad I was wrong on that one, but Jackson’s a helluva player.) Even if they don’t want to keep D-Mac in the fold, they’ll need some receivers for Kevin Kolb to throw to. Dead on with this one.

List of Prerequisites to be Denver Broncos QB:

1.Don’t EVER compare yourself to Elway, and we’ll make sure we don’t either. 10 years is enough time to heal.

2.Don’t make our ownership or management have to call YOU time after time.

3.Don’t piss off Mr. B, he signs your checks.

4. Try your best, we’ll support you if you leave 100% out on the field.

5.Neckbeards are REQUIRED as of 4.2.2009

True.

I was surprised by Jackson’s tumble last year and think he’d be a great compliment to Nicks on the field. Slip Curtis into the slot to be their Stokely and you’ve got something started…

Like this pick

And I’m sure McNabb would LOVE it. ; )

I'd Hope So!

They owe that guy some better weapons.

Disagree?

I’d love if those that voted against this pick could elaborate on their position.

I agree with it

A good compliment to DeSean Jackson, and should work well with Baskett, I may of looked at Beanie Wells here, just because I think that Westbrook has a limited life left and I think that they (Philly) may look at getting a solid RB to help spilt carries. The only reason I would have against it would be that I think Nicks would probably be there at 28.

Well...

The Eagles have Trent Cole locking down one of the DE spots and plenty of options for the other side (Juqua Parker and Victor Abiamiri come to mind). I seriously considered Jackson because of his potential versatility along the line in Philly, but Ayers doesn’t really do it for me. In the end, I opted for the guy with the most managable negatives and/or highest floor.

are there still any boldin rumors going around or has that stopped??? I definitely think they need another WR. jackson is good, almost as good as Royal :) but he can’t do it by himself.

I love the way this guy attacks the ball at it's highest point!

He demonstrated this in the game against West Virginia when he had 8 grabs for 217 yards. He went up for the ball like a power forward going up for a rebound. Nice pick!

My roots are in Denver and my branches in Nebraska.

It would be a good pick but it defies history
