Just a reminder.
I didn't see this mentioned in any off the post over the past few days, so here we go:
When talking of value and whether or not we got a good deal for Cutler, just remember that we went into that 06 draft with the 22nd and 29th pick in and draft and spent both of them to get Cutler.
We also spent 3 years of this billion dollar franchise's time, and their fan's goodwill and support, to develop Cutler and build around him.
I posted a short FanPost called "The price for cutler" well before this whole mess (reflecting on why Shanny lost his job), reminding everyone that with old #16 and two fist round picks, this team might have had a much better record over the past three years ... the whole point was the with Jay we would have been better off over the long haul, and now we take a step back.
So getting two 1st, a 3rd and Orten - a 5th was hardly good business overall; it was just the best we could do given the situation. Don't think we got out this deal ahead, we got our 2 first rounders from 06 back, plus the interest of 3 years and a proven comodity.

very interesting take
Shanny did take a lot of offensive guys for him, which proves if the Bears dont get a few recievers and a legit left tackle for the future, this guy is in trouble.

They have Chris Williams who played LT with him at Vandy.
How did he do last year?

He was hurt most of the year.
Played late in the season and started to round out. With Pace there Williams will probably move over to right tackle. With Bennett and Williams there I wonder if Jay will use his key to the city to change their name to the Chicago Commodores.

I think it's still a little early tell who got the better end of this deal...
By saying we somehow sold ourselves short on this deal, at this point in time, is like the draft experts grading our ’08 draft with a C average at 5pm on Sunday of draft day weekend last year. Give it some time. Let it soak. Make your decision on the trade in 3 – 4 years from now.
Another way to look at it: For the pick we spent on Cutler and this year’s fifth, we got Orton, two first rounders and a third rounder. That’s a player and a pick for another player and three picks. Let time decide how we end up in this deal. Orton may be an ok QB, and Cutler may end up being the next coming of Ryan Leaf. What really matters is what we do with the draft picks. Hope for the best.
From there, I'd like to say that the wheels came off, but that wouldn't feel like an accurate description. The wheels didn't just magically come off, the Raiders all got out of the car, shot the wheels off the own car, busted out the taillights, smashed the windshield and poured Splenda in the gas tank. Then they all piled back inside and started screaming, "CAR WON'T MOVE, ME SAD NOW!" - MJD Yahoo Sports

It doesn't matter
Cutler was not going to play here this year. None of us knows the full story but it certainly is not as simple as the Broncos talking to other teams about him. The Broncos had no choice but to trade him and this is the best deal that was offered. There are no winners or losers in this trade. It is just something that happened. Had he not demanded a trade and the Broncos did one, then we could look at the winner/loser aspect. This was self defense: trade or have a cancer on the team. Don’t look back on this deal. Just go forward. We all need to have a cornerback’s mentality on this. The Pats have done very well with 6th and 7th round QBs. They cut their number one overall draft choice that was a QB for their 6th rounder named Brady. He was not that impressive the first training camp but good enough that they kept him as the 4th QB. Have faith, Cutler is not the only QB out there. I personally think we would have gone further with Jake.

I disagree with you.
I feel Cutler was overvalued. We got more than just the two firsts we gave up to get Cutler. We will have early to mid first round picks in the next two drafts. We gave late round firsts for Cutler. We got a third rounder. We also got a starting quality QB who if he threw the ball as much as Cutler did last year, he would have probably had better numbers. You should make your post a little more balanced and give equal thought into exactly what Chicago gave up.

We didn't give up two firsts for Cutler.
The 29th pick was traded for San Francisco’s 2nd and 3d round picks. We gave up the 3rd rounder to move from 15 to 11 for Cutler. The 2nd rounder was traded for Javon Walker, so that is the definition of a sunk cost, there.
