The draft buzz on Kyle Orton in 2005

<!-- TF 160x600 JScript VAR code -->

Kyle Orton, QB, Purdue Sr 6-4, 233

Positives
A true safety-first QB. Will never, ever force a deep ball or anything into double coverage unless it absolutely needs it (just 5 picks in his senior year). He has the field-reading skills of a 10 year NFL vet and can diagnose a blitz instantly, and is happy to sit in against it and make his reads. Good timing is a huge part of his play, especially in the underneath and short-medium range passes. He won’t even consider parting with the ball until he is certain his receiver is open, and may be on a par with plenty of NFL quarterbacks when it comes to play action – think ol’ Peyton but slightly less polished.

Negatives
One thing will stick out to NFL scouts – watching him throw a long ball is just plain painful. They’re either off target ( a long way ), underthrown so the receiver has to slow down to a crawl to receive it, or he sits in the pocket so long he gets snapped in two. Another warning sign has to be his benching towards the end of his senior season when it all fell apart rather briskly. One more slight knock is that he played almost all of his college career out of the shotgun spread offense, and will take a long time to adjust to the complexities of an NFL passing scheme.

Pro Potential
Orton is one of those QBs that you just know can be successful in a particular system. In a short to intermediate passing game he could well be a comfortable NFL starter as long as he can adjust to the rigours of the big league.

Best fit
Somewhere in a conservative system with plenty of underneath passes (think the Patriots) where he has a couple of years to learn his trade at a higher level. He gets those two – solid NFL QB in a few years.

Loved that too!

And this:

One more slight knock is that he played almost all of his college career out of the shotgun spread offense, and will take a long time to adjust to the complexities of an NFL passing scheme.

Not a knock for this system! Awesome awesome awesome.

He’ll need to earn the start, but I like his skill set for what we want to do. Good job, McD. You did your homework on a guy many people (me!) at first thought was a mere token add to the trade.

Low risk = low reward

That is a good fit for a team with a good D and/or good ST. Hmmm, sounds like Chicago was the antithesis of Denver. At any rate, I can’t picture the D being any worse. The ST has been blah for so many years that I am not sure what will get improvement in that critical aspect of the game. Maybe getting more LBs from the switch to the 3-4 will spruce up the ST.

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

Actually that's not true...

the cost of a mistake far, far and away, exceeds the value of a great play. Announcers don’t understand that; fans don’t appreciate it, and Madden/Fantasy don’t accurately account for it. But several studies have shown that mistakes, especially turnovers are what win and lose games more than almost anything else.

Just look at last season. When the Broncos took care of the ball we won; we they turned it over we lost. Nothing else really made a difference.

That’s especially true if the player that commits 20 turnovers can get rattled when he does.

"Fear is the mind killer"

There are statistical and probability studies that support the turnovers = losses perspective, but players that don’t have confidence in QBs that can cause some fear in the opponents and hope in their teammates usually don’t play well during crunch time. Losing quietly produces the same end result as losing brashly.

Good to know.

And I think this is exactly the type of QB Coach McD wanted. Let’s hope it still holds true.

Great find, I love the "think the Patriots" part!

Just for kicks, here’s what Scout’s Inc had to say (have to be an ESPN Insider to view)

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/players/scouting?playerId=8520

Orton is going into his fourth year and has good size and above-average athletic ability. He has a strong arm and can make all the throws. He can fit the ball into tight windows or toss it deep with accuracy. He is more of a pocket passer who has a three-quarter release and can get the ball out relatively quickly. Orton has lots of raw talent. He isn’t fleet-of-foot, but has enough foot agility and quickness to move and avoid pressure to make plays downfield. He appears to have matured reading coverages better and taking what the defense gives him rather than forcing the ball when under pressure. He has the tools to be an effective signal caller in the league but isn’t a player who can carry a club. He will compete for the starting position in 2008.

The healing process has begun....

What's a three-quarter release? Why does it matter? Anyone?

Basically they are speaking of throwing motion and his release point -

A three quarter release is not quite side arm but not considered an over the top motion either, it’s kind of in between but more sidearm. The 3/4 release is thought to be a quicker release than a traditional over the top motion but some scouts don’t like the “mechanics” of it. Vince Young was said to have a 3/4 release. In the NFL with the men in the trenches so big nowadays scouts worry about a 3/4 release getting batted down at the line.

I liked some of the points made on this...

Namely his ability to read coverages, stand in on the blitz, avoiding throws into coverage, and ability to perform play-action. May be some nice new features for us around here.

Nice find gahoagie....

Right now I’m getting into supporting Orton or Simms mode…….let the best man win. During pre-season we are undefeated and my team will stay that way until they don’t. I think both QB’s will love the big target in Brandon and the exact passing routs of Eddie. I’m beginning to feel really good about this season.
