MHR Community Mock Draft Pick #28

With the #28 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles (via Carolina Panthers) select....

RB, CHRIS WELLS, OHIO ST.

Philadelphia Eagles (via Carolina Panthers)

Round 1, Pick #28 overall

GM bcfunk

Details of the pick after the jump...

Eagles are used to RBs with Injuries...

From GM bcfunk:  Hot dog! After waiting a bit for the Arizona Cardinals (#31) to offer up a blockbuster trade (Anquan Boldin anyone?), the Eagles happily select Chris "Beanie" Wells with the 28th pick. Wells provides the Eagles with a true power running back (with speed) who immediately becomes their goal line stud and heir to Brian Westbrook (entering 8th season). This selection, along with Hakeem Nicks at #21, gives the Eagles two dynamic weapons for help McNabb to deploy. It also extends the shelf life of Mr. Questionable (Westbrook) who currently has Lorenzo Booker backing him up now that Correll Buckhalter signed with the Broncos. The Eagles briefly mull over drafting OT, William Beatty, but ultimately decided to address their offensive tackle need later in the draft. Wells is simply too good to pass on.

Commish's Thoughts:  First off, forgive the caption, it wasn't fair.  Wells got the knock for injuries, but what I saw when I watched was a very tough player who didn't let his team down and played hurt.  As a player, he reminds me a bit of LJ, slightly upright runner, takes a lot hits in the upper body and gets cut down pretty easily, but he has a take no prisoners running style that will complement Westbrook nicely, and hopefully buy Westbrook a little more quality time in the backfield.  This is a nice spot for Wells to go, and a nice situation to end up in.  I dig it.

ON THE CLOCK

New York Giants are up next.  Wow, we are down to the nitty gritty now.  We will easily make it through the first round, and could even make it to Denver's pick in the 2nd.  We'll see what Russ comes up with when he isn't busy figuring out what makes the Rockies tick over at Purple Row.

The deadline for this pick is Midnight MST, April 10th..  As long as I receive the pick by that time it will be valid.  To send me the pick, just email me at the address shown in my profile.

As Co-Eagles GM...

I’m not in love with this pick. I don’t like backing up an injury-prone player with another injury-prone player. More importantly, however, is the fact that Wells is mediocre in all aspects of the passing game and that’s a huge part of playing RB in Philly. For a generic team with the Eagles current roster, this pick would be a no-brainer and I get the value, but it’s not a good fit and I doubt they’d even consider him in real life. With the character concerns clouding Shady McCoy, I’d expect Philadelphia to snag Donal Brown (UConn) if they want an RB but miss out on Moreno. Maybe I’m wrong on all this and they’re really thinking of switching gears…

The Eagles struggeled woefully in short-yardage situations last season...

Check this out and then listen to McNabb

“It’s frustrating when you drive down there and have the ball on the 1-yard line or half-yard line and can’t score,” McNabb said after Sunday’s game. “We have to get in the end zone.”

I’m understand the injury concern; it’s legitimate. However, I’ll rather take a chance on a guy who has the potential to be a very good to great RB, can play through injuries and who works hard to improve his game. A lot of players are simply lucky through college and don’t suffer injuries. Again, not dismissing the criticism, just saying it’s a risk I think the Eagles would take. Seriously, they have no short-yardage RB. The other pressing need for the Eagles is OT. I opted for the back with upside and was willing to risk drafting a good OT in the 2nd round. I’m curious if you would’ve drafted OT, Andre Smith, Alabama if he fell one more spot.

Anyway, we’ve done an excellent job representing the Eagles! We can’t agree on anything, our fans will call for our heads and somebody’s probably going to jail! LOL.. just kidding, of course! :)

True.

I would have considered Smith, but I probably couldn’t get past the character concerns. I get the value of Wells at #28 and see the temptation, I would have just gone a different direction. I agree that we’ve done a fine job, considering the circumstances. Kudos to us!

Can't you at least

argue about benching McNabb? Anyone??

Darn reasonable Broncos fans. :(

Well...

Once upon a time, I argued that Plummer, Delhomme and McNabb were nearly identically productive and that the difference in their perception was their home team markets and the MSM meme. I can’t remember what three year period it was, but it’s creepy how similar they were…

As for the benching, I think it sparked him and made him better again. I like the Kolb draft with an eye towards the future. That’s the benefit of doing that for a while…

I'd have to get tequila'd up to turn into an Eagles fan!

seriously, though, I think the Eagles fan base is going to go “ape-feces” if their management watches WRs like Braylon Edwards and Anquan Boldin get traded on draft day.

Beanie

Beanie is to square peg as Eagles offense is to round hole.

Andy won’t touch a RB who isn’t polished in the passing game. So much of what the Eagles do on offense centers around the RBs ability to snag balls out of the backfield.

I have to echo ejruiz’s sentiments of Donald Brown, Moreno or even McCoy being more of an Eagles mold back.

by andyreidswaistline on Apr 10, 2009 10:10 AM MDT up reply actions

seems logical but...

Hopefully Andy has repented of his ways. Its true that he hasn’t touched a RB who didn’t have receiving abilities but its also true that they haven’t been a very good short yardage/red zone team.

He already has the dynamic pass catching stud RB. He needs somebody that can do the dirty work and get in the inzone. Those traits should be more important to him in this years draft, Maybe next year or in 2 years he can look for a westbrook replacement

I agree, but good god Andy

get a clue and get a back who can get the critical yard.

RE: Beanie injuries

This is from the headblogger of the Ohio St. Blog, talking about analysts giving Beanie a hard time about his injuries:

I challenge McShay to name one of these scouts. One. Evidently our boy Todd missed that whole rushing for 1609 yards yards with 15 touchdowns, with, oh, I don’t know, pieces of bone floating around in his foot and a rather broken wrist that was 2007. We’ll give the man a pass since Wells’ dominance in lieu of pain that would sideline many lesser backs would make it easy to think there wasn’t anything wrong with the now junior tailback.

Note.

I never implicated his toughness, just his proneness to injury. Whether he can play through this stuff now or not doesn’t matter, because down the road it’s going to cost him. Oh, and getting a Buckeye Blog to defend Wells is like getting Peter King and John Madden to argue that Farve was the greatest QB ever. Now, take me as a Gators fan arguing in favor of Moreno and you have something really special!

trudat

they ARE still injuries… Good point on the Buckeye blog. I’m not entirely sure that the blog is even up and running anymore. There was a lot of turnover on severalof the college blogs, and i don’t remember which ones were put in a holding pattern….

Ahhh, moreno… “He will bring balance to the force…”

Great Pick

AP was also “prone to injury” when he came out. That’s why he lasted until #7. I’d say that pick ended up being worth the risk.

Wells has the potential to be a great RB. Given this is an area of need for Philly and the spot they would be picking him up, this would be GREAT value IMO.
