Was Phyliss right?
Let me start by apologizing for going back to the Jay Cutler trade. I felt compelled to ask this question though. This past weekend I played golf with a friend who is a San Diego Chargers fan. I know. Cats and dogs living together. But he brought up what I thought was a good point and I wanted to get the feedback of the MHR faithful. Was Phyliss right about giving Cutler such a hard time and did Jay provoke it? I know that even if he was right, it still does not excuse him for being a punk. I know it will not change our minds about him. But maybe Jay deserved it. Maybe we got rid of a punk of our own. Anyway, that is an attempt for a positive spin on the trade for us. I would appreciate some comments.
BTW. My friend told me the Chargers organization was extremely embarrassed and disappointed in Phyliss for the whole event. And if anything ever happens again like that, Phyliss will be facing several harsh, under the table fines.

Well
In the heat of the battle, just about anything can happen. It makes the MSM happy and gives everyone something to talk about. Talking trash is part of the game, an attempt to win through intimidation or take your opponent off his game. Is it inexcusable? Well, yes from a players standpoint as it happens constantly, and boys will be boys, and no, from the Front Office or coaching standpoint because it shows a lack of discipline, not to mention disrespect to the entire organization.
I hope you won a few skins from your buddy!

they both displayed poor judgement and immaturity
The difference for me is that Rivers has learned from his mistakes and consciously made efforts to change his behavior for the sake of his team. I can’t say the same about Cutler.

If you talk the talk, you better walk the walk!
There is constant jiving on the field of play, KK said it best, it’s a form of intimidation to get in the opposing teams head. Shannon Sharpe did it every game. Great players don’t let other players get into to their head (psyche), and their mental part of the game is stable and not affected. The worst thing a player can do is show frustration, and when it is all said and done, the player or players playing the psychological game with walk away smiling (we got him now!). Games can be determined with such tactics whether it is right or wrong it happens in every sport.
Should the referees get involved with the trash talking? No, there wouldn’t be enough time to play the game, they would be dealing with this on just about every play.
cutler clearly did not handle the situation very good, thus becoming upset and frustrated. It is hard to teach calmness in competition, yet it is a very important factor of sports. If he would of looked over at him and smiled, then made a big play, the mind game may of been over.
Great quarterbacks are field generals, and they control the offense on the field in the huddle. Players get emotional and it’ the qb’s job to make sure that player’s head is in the game, because if it isn’t then he isn’t worth a darn to the team. 13-3 Baby!!!

There are only a few sporting venues that require silence.
Professional pool (Billiards), bowling, etc. Trash talking in baseball is regulated by the umpire as to settle the teams before a brawl. There are times the umpire lets it go to far, then bang! Great post btw. rec’d

Just had an image of a billards tournament or a golf tournament being played with the kind of trash-talking mind games that go on in football. It might actually raise the viewship for those sports. ;-p

I don't see how one can justify River's actions.
The “cry baby” taunts were just ridiculous, particularly for an “adult”. If one of my HS players had pulled that stunt he would have been shaming his team, his school, me, and himself. He would have been jerked off the sideline and sent back to the locker room. Classless, and without excuse.

HT there hasn't been any class in dego for a long time.
And you are absolutely right about stooping to such a low degree, but on the other hand, jay should of had better planning for himself being “the” leader and all. The point is, you show them on the field who’s boss, and who isn’t. jay didn’t have that and until he does, it will be a rough row to hoe for him.

I don't think it's a matter of justifying actions (Rivers' or Cutler's)
because, as you you state, that would be impossible to do. But as I always tell my kids, it isn’t that you make a mistake — we all do — it’s what you do after the mistake is made.
Since that incident, Rivers vocally committed to change his behavior “for the team’s sake” and reduce the distraction. He did exactly that last year. Despite his diarrhea of the mouth in previous years (there was a lot more than just the Cutler conflict), he had not one “mouthy” incident last year. I’m impressed with that — behavior is hard to change, particularly so quickly. In two years, RIvers has gone from my least favorite Charger to my most liked; the guy strongly leads by example, puts his team first, is passionate about football, can admit mistakes and can change for the better, never gives up, and makes the most of his abilities. We’ll see if he continues on the same road through the rest of his career, but at least he’s headed in the right direction.
Prior to The Trade, Rivers’ maturation was where I derived hope for Cutler. We’re all very aware of Cutler’s behavior since that game, including appearances on national sports shows talking about how he doesn’t like RIvers. Oh well. I confess I already feel better about rooting for Orton.

no no no!!!
I don’t back him at all. I’m just saying that looking back at that incident, however pissed it made me at Rivers, maybe he was not only right, but he was showing us the writing on the wall. And no way in heck do I excuse Phyliss for what he did and how he acted.

I do think the writing was on the wall
and it was on the wall in a lot of places, including the “Phyllis” incident. 2009 will be another chapter in the Phyllis v Cutler conflict, even though Cutler isn’t with the Broncos anymore, and I am thinking a lot of fans are going to pay attention and compare the two going forward.
A lot of fans invested in Cutler, and are still hoping to recoup what looks like a near complete loss. The divisional play and at home play in particular saw very poor ROI, two areas that are critical factors in the QBs ability to help the team. If he performs favorably compared to Phyllis going forward, both on and off the field, I suspect many of Cutler’s fans will consider it to be a form of dividend payment. The only problem with that that I see is it means you have to stay invested in Cutler.
I don’t know. I have made bad investments before, and quite a few with Shanny’s “latter-day” Broncos (not referring to Larsen here), and I agree with Ted in that sunk costs shouldn’t be a source of guilt or regret. But I have a hard time chasing bad money with good.

Rivers
Rivers may have punked us all, but during the last half of the season he did his best to help his team. Cutler seemed to fold and become more sullen as the season went along. I am not a fan of Phylis Diller Rivers, but he shut up and did his job! As a former coach and with a couple of months hindsight I know that Orton is no Cutler but Cutler doesn’t have the poise of Orton. This is a team sport and like it or not Rivers was a better team player in the end than Jay was. Watching and thinking about the way Cutler conducted himself on the field and around his team, is what told us what Jay was about. Jay’s problem was that he may have had Elways arm, but he didn’t have his heart of his head! Question for davecheffy what did Cutler do to make this work and work to stay here, he chose to leave instead of staying, you don’t punk the man that writes your checks!

The boy just ain't right I tell ya...
jay is no field general and never will be as long as he keeps getting his way. Well, his way left, and that;s why he is gone. All I have to say about that is good luck and good bowling. 13-3 Baby!!!

Cutler.
Totally agree davecheffy. Since Cutler was traded he has become a villian on this board. But I all I know is that we have traded the best young QB in the NFL for an average at best QB in Kyle Orton. Cutler said we will never know the whole story (I wish he would tell it to us though) but the reason he didn’t return Mr. Bowlen’s messages is that he knew that was the only way he could assure he would be traded. Cutler didn’t handle the situation like he should have but if it weren’t for McDaniels there wouldn’t have been a situation to begin with. Going to be tough watching Cutler playing for the Bears the rest of his career because I still think he will be a Hall of Fame QB.

He's HoF if you base it on stats
Aside from that, he started in Denver, that already means he won’t get in to the HoF.

We shouldn't be handing out accolades just yet,
seeing that mr boohoo lost his shoulder (shanny) to cry on, and his, could do no wrong buddy (Bates). I’m just saying, lets wait until Jan 3rd to see if we are going to hand out any medals of valor, or superficial awards to mr cutler. Hopefully the fans up there will be gentle on him this year

rob,we traded a 5th Rnd pick & Cutler for 2 #1's, a third & then made them give us Orton too!!!
Imho, it will be very interesting to see just what Cutler does without all the “props” he had here!?! I, for one, was looking forward to Cutler getting a chance to be " Coached up" by McD, ( with that cannon for an arm, I expected him to do a great job, HOWEVER, he didn’t want things to work out here, so he did what was needed so he could leave), THANKS PAT!!! I’m very glad you did what you thought was necessary for your team to get back in contention & on course for some more SB Wins!!!! IF ANYONE on this team doesn’t want to be here, don’t let the door hit you on the way out!!! This team has been way too much “ME” oriented for awhile now, & I am very excited to see what these guys will do now that they are actually being coached & not coddled!!! As for Cutler, IF, he ever decides to get over himself, & accept some real coaching, ( Jeremy Bates, LOL), he MAY, become an actual team player, but, it’s questionable, especially in a QB Graveyard like Chi town> I wish him well, Vaya con dios, (Sp)! Personally, Imho, we got great wealth from the trade, but we’ll have to wait & see, Darnit!!!

unless you mean fantasy football hof, and the Bear’s scheme will have to be night and day different for him to approach his numbers from last year.

rivers
I hate the guy but he is just as good or better than Jay. He doesn’t have the cannon arm but he had HUGE numbers last year (34 tds, 11 ints and the best qb rating in the nfl 105.5). He never quit on his teamates the way Jay clearly did at times… He was a smarter qb who could manage a game and make most(if not all) throws necessary to win a game. He was and is a better nfl qb than Jay Cutler… regardless of arm strength. That being said I must reiterate that I hate Rivers on principle alone and in no way am I stating my admiration of a Charger.

Although I think Phyllis Rivers is a b****, he’s got better, more consistent numbers than Cutler. Now it’s known that I’m not Cutler fan either, the way he dropped the Broncos and the fans is just inexcusable. But if we’re being real here, Rivers deserved to be in the Pro Bowl, Cutler did not.

but, we should have a plan to kick the living daylights out of him when we meet him this year. And there is doubt about his (rivers) ability, but he can be beat. 13-3 Baby!!!

Was Rivers right?
If this is referring to that Christmas Eve game then no he wasn’t. I know there is a lot of trash talking in the NFL, however I don’t think he was right in doing that even if Cutler provoked it. Sometimes you have to be the better person and let it go. The one thing that got in his head was that he wanted to beat them so badly that he made bad descisions. Rivers did tone it down this past season, however I will never like him one bit.

his trash talk is inexcusable
and I’ll never think he’s a good person, but given the whole Cutler fiasco this offseason, he really showed that he too is a horse of a different color. Although Rivers is public enemy number 2 (behind Al of course), I’m not going to dismiss the fact that maybe, just maybe, Cutler yapped his lips off too.
one thing is for sure though, to flip off opposing teams fans like he did to us is downright wrong. I really wish Goodell would have given him a sizable fine for that.

I hate to agree BUT
Yes you are probably right about the punk talking. Remember Matt Wilhelm also came out and called Cutler a punk for his comments on the field.
Even Stephen Cooper called Cutler a crybaby for always crying to the refs.
I think the more this CutCook issue plays out through the years, we will find that the Bronco organization (not only Coach McDaniels but GM Brian Xanders and Pat Bowlen) did the right thing.
Here is even a punks remark in Chicago “yeah I think we have just as good or even better receivers here then at Denver”.
by DLMyers on May 12, 2009 3:47 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Cutler.
I agree with you styg about Cutler not having the stats with the Bears that he had in Denver because he doesn’t have as good a receiving group as he had in Denver and the Bears running game will be a lot better than what Cutler had in 2008 with the Broncos. Greg Olsen is a great tight end though and I am sure the Bears will add some more quality wide receivers in the draft and free agency the next two or three years to make sure Cutler has all the weapons he needs on offense to succeed. They already have a great running back in Forte in place. I expect Cutler to have around 25 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions in 2009 which would be great considering he is learning a new offense and learning all the new moves of his new receivers. I hope Orton can have similar stats in McDaniels offense and hopefully Orton will have a great running game also with Moreno, Hillis, and whoever else McDaniels keeps on the roster at the running back position. I understand and don’t blame any of you that are glad Culter is gone but I am not in that crowd. I feel like trading Culter would have been like trading Elway after his third year with the Broncos and we know what a crazy and terrible move that would have been and I am forever grateful Reeves (or did Bowlen over rule him?) didn’t trade Elway to Washington in 1992 also. Can’t wait to see how Cutler’s career in Chicago goes and how McDaniels does as our head coach the next few years. Maybe we will play the Bears in the Super Bowl within the next 5 seasons!! Wouldn’t that be the most hyped Super Bowl ever? I hope it happens and of course I will be hoping for a Broncos win over Cutler and the Bears. We had SB33 which matched Reeves vs. Elway so maybe we will get McDaniels vs. Cutler also. Man, I can’t wait for the 2009 season to start even though I don’t think we will be a playoff team this year but I hope Orton and company prove me wrong!! Moreno will be a star for us and with apologies to TD, I think Moreno will be the best running back ever for the Broncos.

I get the feeling
that overall, prior to this spring’s events, most of us would have preferred to see Cutler stay and see how well he could do in McD’s system.
Though, in hindsight, I’m glad things worked out the way they did, because I get the feeling that had Jay stayed, it would have resulted in a dysfunctional relationship between coach and quarterback. McD’s insistence that there will be competition at every position coupled with Jay’s repeated statements that he felt he could not trust McD would have had an adverse effect on the team in 2009, and probably 2010 as well.
I was never that great of a Cutler fan, but I do wish him all the success he can achieve in Chicago.
I still think we’re going to surprise a lot of people this year, and I also get the feeling that when 2009 is in the books, Cutler and Orton will have very similar numbers, Chicago and Denver will have very similar win-loss records (and maybe even a playoff appearance), and we’ll all be engaging in this whole discussion once again in the off-season between 2009 & 2010.
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.
