BREAKING: Shannon Sharpe elected to Broncos Ring of Fame
Former tight end Shannon Sharpe, who was named to the Pro Bowl seven times as a Denver Bronco and helped the club to two Super Bowl victories, was elected as the 22nd member of the Broncos' Ring of Fame, it was announced Tuesday.
The induction ceremony will take place on Sunday, Sept. 20, at halftime of the Broncos' home opener against the Cleveland Browns at INVESCO Field at Mile High (2:15 p.m. MDT kickoff).
Sharpe, who played 12 seasons for Denver from 1990-99 and 2002-03, tied a Broncos franchise record with seven consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1992-98 while becoming the NFL's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns by a tight end. A key member of the Broncos' back-to-back Super Bowl championship teams from 1997-98, Sharpe also was a four-time first-team All-Pro selection by the Associated Press while a member of the Broncos.
In 172 career regular-season games (139 starts) with Denver, Sharpe registered the second-most receptions (675), receiving yards (8,439) and receiving touchdowns (55) by a player in club annals, trailing only wide receiver Rod Smith. Selected by the Broncos in the seventh round (192nd overall) of the 1990 NFL Draft from Savannah State University, Sharpe totaled 18 100-yard receiving games (17 regular season, 1 postseason) as a Bronco that tie for the third most by a player in franchise history.
Sharpe also played two seasons with Baltimore from 2000-01, earning the third Super Bowl ring of his career during the 2000 campaign and his eighth trip to the Pro Bowl in 2001 with the Ravens.
For his 14-year NFL career, Sharpe played 204 career regular-season games (169 starts) and had 815 receptions for 10,060 yards (12.3 avg.) with 62 touchdowns. He currently ranks second to only the Falcons' Tony Gonzalez (1997-Pres.) in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns by a tight end in NFL history.
A finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2009, Sharpe owns more receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, Super Bowl wins and Pro Bowl selections than any of the seven tight ends enshrined in the Hall of Fame. He was named the first-team tight end on the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team as chosen by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee members.
Sharpe is the first former Bronco elected into the franchise's Ring of Fame since running back Terrell Davis (1995-2002) joined the distinguished membership in 2007. He is the first tight end to earn membership into the Broncos' Ring of Fame.
The Broncos' Ring of Fame was created in 1984 by team owner Pat Bowlen to honor former players and administrators who played significant roles in the franchise's history. The Ring of Fame is displayed on the Level 5 façade of INVESCO Field at Mile High.

Wooo Hoo!
It’s a day made for Shannon! Why?
Because September 20th will be my one year anniversary – exactly one year since I married my wife, who’s name happens to be - Shannon.
Good times all around.

rec'd and buzz'd!
It’s up to us to make sure he gets into the Hall of Fame in 2010. I’ll be damned if I let them(the voters) disrespect this All-Time great again.

Getting into the HOF
Should be a no-brainer with the career he had and his body of work… the Broncos were wise to enshrine him now in the Ring of Honor, that helps as well and eliminates the argument that some players face when people say “his own team didn’t put him in their ring of honor.”

Seriously
he is a no brainer. He was first all time in receiving records as a TE. He was a 3 time Superbowl winner and very important in all 3(TRENT DILFER WON A SUPERBOWL I think Sharpe had a lot to do with that+that amazing D)He was also a good blocker…wasn’t he i am too young to remember that much of his game.

He was a great blocker, but the media tries to discredit his blocking ability.
Any Bronco fan from that era knew that we had the best blocking TE and WR core in the league.
Eddie Mac, Rod Smith, and Sharpe were the deciding factor in TD getting that 2000 yards. Any back who rushes for 2000 yards had to have great blocking outside of the interior lines great blocking.

We disagree on this
and have gone around on this in the past because I don’t think he was a great blocker at all. I think he made himself into a solid blocker, but great is too far imo. But I suppose that’s just a technicality.

I tend to agree
based soley on memory. I seem to recall Shanahan wanting Shannon to improve his blocking, and maybe even Elway joking that he didn’t like to block anybody. Not that he didn’t or didn’t do a good job, but I seem to remember that being the case during the two SB seasons. But obviously his spectacular receiving ability and the insanely great matchups he was getting on tight ends more than made up for him because, at that time, there wasn’t much of a way to counter it.
It’s possible I’m just remembering MSM coverage, though. And we all know how they like to inflate little issues and make them larger than life. ^^ It may have been conflated during the whole Australians-are-rude-Shanny-doghouse-ship-him-off-to-Bmore period.
Whatever the case, Ozzie Newsome notwithstanding, Shannon was the new prototypical TE primarily for his receiving ability and probably a major reason we were later treated to the likes of Gonzalez and Gates in our division.

Not that I don't appreciate the argument
that he was also considered a lineman on a 2000-yd season for TD. So clearly he contributed something. But let’s face it — at that time, much of the league seemed pretty unprepared for the zone blocking scheme we were laying on them.

Good for Mr. Sharpe!
I always thought Jackson was pretty hard on the Broncos, but it’s been a few years since I’ve been able to watch much of the TV commentary… has he mellowed?

I Remember
Watching Shannon play in the Senior Bowl and watching him totally dominate the DBs he faced. I kept an eye on him because he was Sterlings’ brother. So when the Broncos took him I was ecstatic, I knew he was a keeper. Little did I know he would turn out to be a Stellar player. We all know he should have been voted into the HoF on the first try. If he doesn’t make it soon, it will be a travesty. Congrats Shannon!

Something I thought in BShrouts "Favorite Players" post
.
TE—Shannon Sharpe … "Send in the Marines Mr. President ! We’re killing the Patriots!" ‘nuff said.
Note: You East and Left Coast Sportswriters really pissed me off last year. Shannon redefined the meaning of TE …forever. Wake Up !!! He broke all of Hall of Famer Kellen’s records !!

Good to hear
I am still pissed about being passed over by the HOF, but glad to see he will be standing up with the other great Broncos. Question becomes if Shanahan will give a speech inducting.
