Previewing the Tennessee Titans

"Vince is the number 2" says Head Coach Jeff Fisher of the Tennessee Titans, who is widely known the longest tenured head coach in the NFL.

But to say there is no quarterback controversy is simply false.

In 2008 Kerry Collins lead the Titans to a 13-3 record by taking care of the ball, managing the game and allowing a nasty defense to bully opposing offenses.  Not to mention he got a lot of practice handing the ball off to one of the leagues top running duos in Chris Johnson and LenDale White.  But this season things surely won't be as easy for Collins, opposing clubs have a seasons worth of video to see how he operates Fisher's offense and that defense that was bullying people around last year lost its leader on the field and off.

When the Titans are on offense:

QB:

Collins is the starting QB, but current number 2 Vince Young is making starters money and is the kind of playmaker that gets fans and video game enthusiasts excited.  The QBs couldn't be more opposite if they tried.  Young has about 3 passes that he throws really well, the deep out, the inside slant, and the dump off to the running back, as we all know its his feet that put the fear of God into his opponents.  Conversely the only throw Collins struggles with is the fade, he has a tendency to let the ball hang in the air.  But he hits all the crossing routes that Fisher uses to keep linebackers off the line of scrimmage.  If there are early season losses be ready to see Young start taking snaps again, and being that the NFL is a copycat league, the Titans could use Young to lead a wildcat formation.

RB:

The running game is as good as any in the NFL with Chris Johnson as the starter splitting carries with White.  This duo is as stereotypical "thunder & lightning" as it gets on the surface with Johnson's agility and 4.23 40 speed and White's reputation for running more like a bowling ball than a running back. But on closer examination its these backs ability to switch gears that makes this attack fearsome.  Last year Johnson's ability in between the tackles made him everything Saints fans dream of Reggie Bush being, and this year White has shown up to training camp almost 40lbs lighter.  Ahmard Hall is a solid, yet unspectacular, lead blocker who could go the whole year without touching the ball.

WR:

The receivers are the Titans biggest offensive weakness.  None of the pass catchers on this team scare people deep which is why rookie Kenny Britt could be in for a big year.  He should start immediately and has the speed and hands to make safeties take a step back.  Justin Gage will probably start the year as the number 1 receiver, if he is going to prove that he is talented enough to be a top tier receiver this is the year he has to shine, otherwise he could be doomed to the back of the depth chart.  Nate Washington is overhyped and underskilled.  He could start the year out as Collins' primary target, but look for him to end up exclusively lining up on third and long situations.  This group should see a lot of changes over the course of the season but ultimately settle for mediocrity with Britt showing signs of being the only true number 1 caliber receiver.

TE:

The tight end duo is really the primary receiving corp of this team.  Alge Crumpler and Bo Scaife often are the first reads for Collins in Fisher's offense.  The Titans are at their best when the tight end can block and release, and for that reason the two of them see a lot of action.  Crumpler has soft hands but has lost some speed, and Scaife is a bit stronger when blocking for runners.

OL:

Michael Roos stunned last year.  Billed as nothing more than a stop gap solution he turned in a great year keeping the lead footed Collins out of trouble, and he will have to do the same this year.  The line as a whole is better than the sum of its parts, 3 out of the 5 starters were drafted in the 4th round or later by the Titans.  LT Roos was a 2nd rounder and Mawae is recognized as one of the leagues best centers, it is largely his ability to always make the correct line calls once the hands go in the dirt that keeps qbs upright and Johnson going up the gut of defenses.

When the Titans are trying to get the ball (base 4-3):

DE:

The Titans believe they have one of the best pairs of pass rushers in the league.  Kearse and Vanden Bosch certainly have a nasty reputation, but both are getting up there in age and have seen their speed off the edge drop.  With the departure of monster Albert Haynesworth, it will be necessary for the two of them to step up their games against the run.

DT:

Once the strength of a very stout defense, the DT position is in turmoil and in big trouble if no one steps up.  The Titans didn't have the money to retain Haynesworth and now they don't have a clear solution in the middle of their line.  Right now Tony Brown and Jason Jones are penciled in as the starters, but look for a 4 man rotation that will probably split the snaps in half, the other 2 that I think will complete this rotation are rookie Sen Derrick Marks (a little undersized for a typical Titans DT, will see snaps DE in short yardage situations) and former Buc Jovan Haye.

MLB:

Stephen Tulloch is the starter and is competing for the title of most underrated MLB in the NFL.  His stats aren't eye popping, but its his (forgive me for stealing a basketball term) help defense that gets teams in trouble.  He has a nasty demeanor once the ball is snapped and is a great asset when he drops back with a tight end.  He is undersized, but plays with superior instincts and technique.  Back up Ryan Fowler won't see much action. Fowler is an all instincts player with a nose for the ball and a motor that is always running at top speed... its just a shame that top speed is a good deal slower than the typical outside backer.owler is an all instincts player with a nose for the ball and a motor that is always running at top speed... its just a shame that top speed is a good deal slower than the typical outside backer.

OLB:

Keith Bulluck is the heart and soul of the Titans, he is a veteran who knows everything possible about the linebacker position and still has the speed of his younger peers.  Opposing offenses first priority is to find Bulluck and go the other way.  Denver fans will understand the comparison to DJ Williams; both play with instincts, speed, and a tendency to make ball carriers pay.  On the other side is David Thornton who had 78 total tackles and 2 forced fumbles last year, but had the huge 07 with 122 tackles.  He is a stud in the run game, but rarely blitzes.

CB:

It's this writer's guess that this is Fisher's favorite unit.  Finnegan and Harper are Fisher type players who play big and hit bigger.  Occasionally they can be exposed by faster receivers, but these two combine to make an intimidating presence in the secondary.  Both players turn their coverages inside to help in run support.  Finnegan is a bit more gifted as an athlete, but he spreads that hard hitting mentality to his counterparts in the unit

S:

While the corners maybe Fisher's favorites to watch, its the safeties that are the most talented unit on this defense.  Michael Griffin replaced Ed  Reed in the pro bowl last year, which could be a sign of things to come as I think he has the potential to be the top free safety in the league 2 years from now.   Griffin's not a devastating hitter, but he will punish receivers over the middle from time to time.  Not the greatest in run support at this point; he rarely lines up in the box.  SS Chris Hope on the other hand will.  Hope is a great run support safety that really gets to the ball carrier.  He's fast and hard hitting, but he will misread the offense from time to time and let receivers behind him in the passing game.

The Whole Enchilada:

The Titans have to be having great feelings about the upcoming season despite losing Haynesworth; they did jump out to 10-0 last year.  However I think they are in trouble with the losses of Haynesworth and Schwartz, and the fact that Defensive coordinators are ready for Collins and not busy trying to figure out how to catch Young.  But then again maybe they should at least have a plan B just in case.  Danny predicts 11 wins and an AFC South title.

really nice write up, thanks

It’ll be interesting to see how the young-collins issue plays out.

Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.

Well done - Rec'd

Nice, very good formatting. One thing that I’m very gratified by is the level of professionalism that the members are achieving with these posts – that and the fact that more members are being willing to post and get involved. It just shows what a great experience the MHR has become. Great work, guys – and you, Danny. Thank you

The only things that I would ask about are these: The blocking scheme (drive, gap/regular, zone?) and the offensive scheme (West coast Offense? Erhardt-Perkins? Urban Meyer version spread? Other? I’d love to know that about the teams – it makes looking at who the players are more interesting and more valuable. However – great job, none the less!

scheme wise

Offensively Fisher has always gone with a hybrid version of the west coast (his version emphasizes the post pattern as opposed to a traditional W.C. that highlights the slant and right angle patterns) with a drive gap run blocking scheme.

Great job Danny,

Fisher came out right after the season ended and declared Collins his starter. I don’t understand that when your paying Young starter type money. To me it would make sense (as Mcdaniels has stated) to open all the positions up to competition. Collins is no spring chicken, he will be 37 in Dec. If Vince Young ever gets his head on straight he will probably be the Titans starter. This will be Young’s 4th season and he’s still working hard to learn the business. How long does it take.

Titans QB Young works to grow up, out of backup spot.
The Tennessee Titans keep insisting that Vince Young will be their starting quarterback again some day. He said Wednesday that he’s maturing, working hard and learning the business of the NFL.

The Titans offense was just a little better than the Broncos at 15th in points scored. Their defense is what shined, 2nd in the NFL in points given up 14.6/game. We don’t play them this year but san diego does in Tenn 2nd to last game. I hope the Titans Beat the breath out of them. 13-3 Baby!!!

Good snappy writing, right to the point. Rec'd.

Incidentally, note that their All-Pro cornerback, Cortland Finnegan, is SMALLER than Alphonso Smith.

he's smaller...

5’10" to be exact, but he’s a monster hitter with good quick feet and smooth hips. It’s his hands that get him in trouble and the reason I say he plays big is it doesn’t matter if he’s matched up against Hines Ward, he’s gonna hit harder. His weakness is his top end speed, he does get beat deep by the faster receivers (enter Griffin over the top to help) and his hands.

Very nice job.

I think it would take a meteor strike directly on top of Kerry Collins’ house to get VY back in the starting line-up, but other than that, this is a good preview.

You bring up a good (oft-missed) point that the Titans are now undersized in the middle on Defense, even back to the MLB position. Granted, MLB isn’t a starting slot in the Titans’ Defense (the Nickle is actually the Base-D), but still, lack of strength at the point of attack is a serious concern heading into this year.

DannoE, I take it you are a Titans fans.

I have a friend here in Idaho who is a Titans fan and we chide each other alot. The question we have is why Fisher is willing to hang onto Young if he is such a airhead, giving him the starter pay to carry a clipboard. It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

You’ll see he is a fan of the Chargers. I think he comes here for the wisdom. :)

I'm a fan of the Chargers and then Titans.

As for wisdom… I’m not gonna lie, this is a pretty good blog. I don’t know what to think about a team that would let their star QB talk his way out of town, but that’s not your guys’ fault. Anywho, I read MHR pretty often.

As to why they keep VY on the roster, there are two reasons:
1. The owner likes him.
2. At least for this year, it would cost about the same to cut him as it would to keep him. With that in mind, he’s not such an abysmally bad QB that you can’t even keep him on the roster as a back-up, so why cut him? One way or another, they’re paying him for the year. That said, they might as well get what they can for their money.

And after all, the Cards are doing the same thing with Leinart. What a mess the top 3 QB’s in the 06 draft have turned out to be.

my bad,

not being a Titans fan the number of wins they strung in a row wasn’t as important to me as the overall record and player profiles were when I was writing

but, I have a better idea of where the Titans are headed this year. Thanks again Danny…13-3 Baby!!!
