13 More Reasons to Believe in 13-3 (Baby!!!!)
Just thought I'd have a bit more fun with the concept of 13 reasons to believe in 13-3 (Baby!!!!)
1. In 1980, Denver went 8-8. The coach was fired and replaced by a rookie head coach (kudos to anyone who can name him), who guided the team to a 10-6 record. So, rookie Denver head coaches can be successful.
2. In 1988, Denver went 8-8. 10 starters were replaced. In 1989, the team went 11-5 and went to the Super Bowl. An 8-8 record can be a prelude to great things.
3. In 1992, Denver went 8-8. The coach was fired and replaced by his defensive coordinator (who had served a stint as an interim head coach 7 years before). In 1993, the team went 9-7 and made a play-off appearance. An 8-8 record plus a new coach is NOT the knell of doom.
4. In 1995, Denver went 8-8. 5 defensive starters were replaced for 1996, and the team went 13-3 and to the playoffs. In 1997 and 1998, Denver won back to back Super Bowls. Replacing starters can be a good thing.
5. In 2001, Denver went 8-8. In 2002, behind the running of a rookie running back, Denver went 9-7. Playoffs are not guaranteed, but it doesn't take much imagination to see how close you can come (like 13-3 :D ).
6. Every time we have had an 8-8 season, we have followed it with a winning season.
7. In two of those post 8-8 seasons, we had a rookie head coach (I’m treating Wade Phillips as a rookie, since his previous stint as a head coach was in serving as an interim head coach with the New Orleans Saints).
8. In three of those post 8-8 seasons, we made it to the playoffs.
9. In one of those post 8-8 seasons, we made it to the Super Bowl. In another, we made it to the Super Bowl two years later.
10. When Dan Reeves came to the Broncos, he was coming off a stint as an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas went 12-4 and made it into the playoffs that year. Coach McCoy is coming off a year as an assistant coach at Carolina where the Panthers went 12-4 and made it to the playoffs.
11. In 1995, Denver replaced 5 defensive starters, went to the playoffs, then to back to back Super Bowls. This off season, we released 7 defensive starters. Does anyone see a parallel?
12. McDaniels, McCoy and Nolan have been on teams that have made it into the post season 16 times (13-3?).
13. This is La La Land. 13-3 Baby!!!!!
Keep on believing. After all, it could happen, we have history on our side.

Why the hell not?!?
This is gonna be an exceptionally memorable season….even if it ends up 7-9, we can all say that we witnessed the genesis of a new Quest. I can’t wait for the pads to be strapped on in July and see this dirt road get paved into something really special.
2 more months to go!
We're in for a wild and exciting ride.
We get to see a new era ushered in, that alone is massively exciting.
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever read
The Broncos are gonna suck hard with Orton (hears a Boo) at the helm this year. Good luck with that 13-3 prediction!
Sorry to hear you're not willing to have fun with the off-season
You might want to read Mike Clark’s articles on La La Land. It’s all about having fun with the changes going on.
Hoosierteacher has some really good articles analyzing what Coach McD is bringing to the table. There are a lot of good articles here that are taking close looks at the new players, strategies, etc. You might want to take a look at them.
There’s been a lot of research that’s been done about the new era that’s starting in Denver. I’d encourage you to read some of them.
If after reading the articles here, you still believe that the Broncos will “suck hard” this year, then I applaud you for being willing to state your opinion.
The only thing any of us know for certain is that we won’t know how the season will play out until it has played itself out.
After 10 years of averaging 9 wins per season, 4 playoff appearances, and 1 playoff win, I’m excited about the new things going on at Dove Valley.
Until such time as we should bomb out, I choose to believe that we are in for a wild and exciting ride.
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.

Wow
Did I accidently go to the link for the Denver Post…….no……no…..this is MHR……………… ;-)
Seriously, we have upgraded our coaching staff, upgraded our secondary, (despite the MSM’s complete ignorance of the facts) we have upgraded our defensive line and linebackers, we have upgraded our WR and even our TE’s, we have upgraded our special teams considerably.
So what haven’t we done?
Oh yeah, Jay Cutler left for the Bears and we got “stuck” with Kyle Orton.
Kyle of the winning record.
Kyle of the game management no mistake mindset.
Kyle who ran the spread quite successfully at Purdue.
Somehow I think we are going to be okay.
Kyle knows how to win. McDaniels knows how to win.
Winning is fun.

A minor nitpick
In 1992, Denver went 8-8. The coach was fired and replaced by his defensive coordinator…
Reeves wasn’t fired. His contract had expired, and Bowlen chose not to renew it.
But thanks for a fun read.

"wording is so technical"
Well, I bet Pat Bowlen would argue with you on that. He’s paying 20 million to Shanahan after firing him, but paid nada to Reeves after not re-hiring him.

With the 12th pick, the Broncos select Knowshon Moreno - Roger Goodell

Great post BShrout! Excellent points. The only thing that I am worried about, is how
Pat Bowlen is acting toward our new team. He said that our team wasn’t a SB contender this year and usually the owner knows a lot about his team. Hopefully we can make the play-offs and make a small run. I not expecting much more than that.
"When you put on that jersey, the name on the front is more important than the name on the back." - "Miracle".
"Winning means you're willing to go longer, work harder, and give more than anyone else." - Vince Lombardi.
I think Pat is cautiously optomistic
He’s been more moderate in his comments of late, which I think is wise.
If he predicts a Super Bowl, and it doesn’t happen, he looks like an idiot for the changes he’s endorsed.
If he predicts improvement, and we end up going to the Super Bowl, he looks like a genius.
If he predicts improvement, and we see any improvement at all, he still looks like he knows what he’s doing.
Personally, I believe Pat Bowlen knows what he’s doing. Therefore, I endorse the we will field an improved, competitive team. And with the way injuries, parity, player motivation and the myriad of other factors can impact a season, at this point in time, 13-3 and a Super Bowl are not out of reach.
Will they be out of reach come December? Who knows. That’s why this will be such an exciting and wild ride.
:D

Good point...your right, you never know what is going to happen. Heck we could win three
SB. Is it likely, not really but it is POSSIBLE. And yes, Pat does know what he is doing. He knows that his team may not be a SB contending team. He probably thinks this b/c we had to trade cutler, but ya still never know. As for me, I’m not going to say we’re a 13-3 team unless we win our first six games.
What I want to see more than anything next year from the crew and the team is energy, a want to be a Denver Bronco(not Cutler), and a desire to win like no other. If I see that in the first six games, we may not be a 13-3 team, but we sure are on our way to it!

This analysis is actually very convincing.
I had steeled myself for a difficult upcoming season with new coaches, system and personnel, but when you point out all the historical precedents, there is a very good chance that we could exceed all expectations!

every time you talk about , we had a QB named john “someone” and you call this mcclown a winner. How? He hasnt even won a game as a head coach. He lost the biggest game of his life and with a team that should have won called the super bowl. You can drink bowlen kol-aid if you want but with out a great QB and the defence is not better. so good luck with your pick.

Actually
In 1981, our qb was Craig Morton, and in 2002 it was Brian Griese. And McD is 3-1 as an assistant coach in Super Bowls. :)
And I do plan to keep on drinking the La La Land Kool aid.

Good thing
we didn’t use this kind of logic when we hired Shanahan, after all he was a former head coach with a losing record and got fired because if it. He also had been a part of less Super Bowl wins than McDaniels. What a fool Bowlen was to hire him.
Maybe we should give those Super Bowl Trophies back and apologize?
As for us all drinking “kol-aid” even though we don’t have a great QB and our defence is not better, most of us here, really love the Denver Broncos.
We want them to do well.
We think that we have improved on defense and we also sincerely believe that Josh McDaniels, Mike McCoy, Rick Dennison and Bobby Turner are a very good coaching staff and that alone will make either Orton or Simms quite good enough to win more than 8 games and not get blown out as often as we did in the last 3 years.
So its the offseason and we are embracing the team first philosophy, the new passionate team players and the offensive system that should get us into the end zone with the ball and not there trying to tackle the guy who Jay last threw it too in his moment of haste ;-).

Absolutely love this post B.
It would appear that 8-8 is a good sign of things to come for the Broncos. :-)
(I don’t think I am going to survive to the start of the season the wait is killing me)

13-3
As much as I wish this was a possibility I remain skeptical. During all of those seasons following an 8-8 season, how many times did we trade away the starting QB for an unproven QB? Granted, I think we did pretty good in the draft, but with the quality of the starting QB I have to remain skeptical. I would rather see Simms start at QB, at least I know he has heart.
For all the skeptics out there (spawn this is NOT directed at you specifically):
Y’all are taking this waaaayyyy too seriously.
Remember, this is La La Land of the Pre-Season; the purpose for it is to feel good about our team. You might want to read Mike Clark’s posts on the La La Land Rules.
Some people prefer to spend their off-season feeling bad about where the Broncos are at and where they’re headed.
I choose to dwell in a different place, a place of infinite and exciting possibilities. Who will be right?
Who knows.
Who cares.
It’s all about taking joy in being fans of our team.
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.
WAH, WAH, WAH to the naysayers
realheavyd1 and the suckbusters should lighten up some. Jay choked two years in a row when he needed to win one game to go to the playoffs. He lost to SF in 2007 and Buffalo in 2008. Two winnable games, two should have won games.
Now, for those old enough to remember:
In 1976 the Broncos went 9-5. Lost a should have won game and the coach was fired. He was replaced by the Offensive Co-Ordinator of New England. The Quarterback was traded for a draft pick and an “over the hill, rag armed loser of a Quarterback”. After the mess was cleared up, the Broncos went 12-2 and went to the Super Bowl. The Quarterback that was called loser led them to the promised land.
So call Orton all the names you want. History is on his side. Oh, and by the way. The Quarterback who Denver traded that year………cut and gone by the end of the pre-season. He had a decent arm, but no leadership skills and no desire to improve his game.
Make those miracles happen - Jon Keyworth
wow, thanks for the memory
I had totally forgotten that Red Miller had been the NE OC right before becoming Denver’s HC.
The parallels between 1976 and 2009 are kinda scary when you look at them closely. Will the results be the same?
Who knows, but it would be totally awesome!!!
Except for poor Jay C — “The Quarterback who Denver traded that year . . . . cut and gone by the end of the pre-season.” Wouldn’t that totally suck for him?
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.

Good things are coming our way!
We have lost a good QB but we’ve found a real leader. In Brian Dawkins we also found a defensive leader which will lead by example.
So I’m looking forward for the coming season. Though I’m not seeing us going all the way, I believe in the team and thind we are heading in the right direction..
Go Broncos…..
