Your 2009 Denver Bronco Starting Line Up v2.0
Its been nearly a month since I posted version 1 of this roster and thought it was about time for an update. There have been a couple of little tit-bits coming out of the MSM and I've changed my thinking on a few positions so there are a few changes but not wholesale changes.
The plan is to produce a roster now, after the June 12th Mandatory Mini-Camp and then directly before and during.
So the first change I am making? This roster will have 53 people on it rather than 54. I promise I will count better this time.
No reason to change the special players
K - Matt Prater
P - Brett Kern
LS - Lonnie Paxton
I like Brett Kern. His average punt length is second in the AFC behind Lechler but the pourous special teams coverage drops him to 8th when it comes to looking at Net punt averages. With some better coverage and the thin air, he could be a valuable weapon.
Offensive Roster
Given the feedback I got on version 1 there were two areas I considered changing. Firstly, I needed to find a way to get Brandstater onto the roster and some people also asked about the number of guards and centres. But in the whole the offensive roster doesn't change a lot.
Quaterbacks
- Kyle Orton - QB
- Chris Simms - QB
- Tom Brandstater - QB
I don't see Brandstater dressing for many games this year but he'll be on the sidelines under the 3rd QB rule.
Offensive Line
- Ryan Clady - T
- Ryan Harris - T
- Tyler Polumbus - T
- Brandon Gorin - T
- Chris Kuper - G
- Ben Hamilton - G / C
- Seth Olsen - G
- Blake Schlueter - C
- Kory Lichtensteiger - C
- Casey Wiegmann - C
I'm sticking with the same balance when it comes to the line. I am keeping 4 tackles, 3 Guards and 3 Centres but with the understanding that those last 6 are pretty fluid and can play a couple of positions. Out of these 10, I probably expect 6 or 7 to dress on game day. Blake Schlueter could be a practice squad candidate.
Wide receivers and Tight ends
- Daniel Graham - TE
- Tony Scheffler - TE
- Richard Quinn - TE
- Brandon Marshall - WR
- Eddie Royal - WR / PR
- Jabar Gaffney - WR
- Kenny McKinley - WR
- Brandon Stokely - WR
No changes here. Watching some of the mini-camp highlights I'm more secure in placing Stokely on my roster. Although if a team wanted to make an offer for him, I think Coach McDaniels would probably snap their hands off. Chad Jackson is still cut, although I am going to say that I won't be surprised if he is on the final roster.
Runningbacks
- Knowshon Moreno - RB
- Peyton Hillis - FB
- JJ Arrington - RB / KR
- Correll Buckhalter - RB
- LaMont Jordan - RB
No Ryan Torrain. But I am not cutting him. He's going on the Physically Unable to Perform list, there was a little tit bit at the bottom of some Post or NFL.com article that suggested this. Here's the thinking behind it - While he may be able to perform during camp, with the way last season went for the Patriots and Broncos, there will be a need for a starting quality running back after about 6 weeks of the season. At that point, we look to the PUP and promote Ryan Torrain. Sure its cheeky, may not work and requires a bit of participation from the player but its possible.
I think running back is one of two positions where there has been a signing between versions 1 and 2 of this roster. Although Darius Walker does not strike me as a someone who will break their way into the five.
Defensive Roster
Some changes here. Nick Greisen has been signed as a FA, some of the linebacker / end discussions have been clarified a bit through the last camp and I know a bit more about the
Safeties and Corners
I am still predicting that Alphonso Smith will be starting as a corner. BroncoBear's Tales..... compared him to Eddie Royal. I think that's about right. The masses won't believe he's starting quality until he lines up for the first snap opposite Champ. I'm sticking to my guns at the moment.
Josh Barrett has been cut. Brutal I know but with his 6 games last year he is still eligible for the practice squad. Would he clear waivers, probably not. Would it be a chance I'd be willing to take? Yes.
Linebackers
- DJ Williams - ILB
- Andra Davis - ILB
- Wesley Woodyard - ILB
- Boss Bailey - ILB
- Spencer Larsen - ILB
- Nick Griesen - ILB
Griesen and Boss both stick around but are probably only going to see special teams action for the majority of the time. This is of course providing that Boss is fit enough to play. If any of the staff have any worries about his short, medium or long term durability for the season then he may be looking at fighting it out for the last spot with Josh Barrett. But when it came down to it, Boss Bailey gives some leverage as the only (?) person on the roster that could play strong side linebacker if the defense is aligned in a 4-3
D-Line
- Robert Ayres - LB / DE
- Elvis Dumerville - LB / DE
- Darrel Reid - LB / DE
- Kenny Peterson - DT
- Nic Clemons - DT
- Ronald Fields - DT
- Carlton Powell - DT
- Marcus Thomas - DT
- Chris Baker - DT
- Everette Pedescleaux - DE
When V1.0 came out, there was one possibility for Nose Tackle and that was Fields. Now, with the news that both Thomas and Powell have added some mass and are looking to compete for a starting job then all of a sudden that makes 3 tackles. But since I had both of them as my starting ends, what happens with the DE
There are four of last years CFAs still around - Kern, Woodyard, Erickson and Polumbus. And three of those are probably going to make the roster this year. Meaning I'm looking at two or three of the current pack that will still be around in 12 months. Baker, Davis and Pedescleaux are the most probable. Having read Tales from the Sunnyside, its very difficult not to like all of them and want to keep them all on the roster. But one of them is destined for the Practise Squad. Since the competition at Nose Tackle has got tougher it is tempting to make that Baker but instead I'm going for him and Pedescleaux. I can't give you a reason other than having read the Bios of Pedescleaux and Davis, I got a better feeling for Pedescleaux.
Jarvis Moss has been cut along with Tim Crowder. Once it became obvious that as well as the linebacking corps he'd also be competing with Ayres, Doom and Reid for a rush linebacker spot then all of a sudden it became too much of a log jam to get him on to the 53 man roster. With an exceptional training camp, there's a chance he edges out someone like Nic Clemons.
Starting Line Ups
The offense stays untouched. The only roster change was adding Torrain to IR. Since we're mostly all interested in Defense anyway, I thought I'd put together a few looks at how the Broncos could line up on week one if they played 3-4 or 4-3 and what the Nickel package looks like.
3-4
| Brian Dawkins | Renaldo Hill | |||||
| Elvis Dumerville | Andra Davis | DJ Williams | Robert Ayres | |||
| Alphonso Smith | Kenny Peterson | Marcus Thomas | Carlton Powell | Champ Bailey | ||
A little of bit of shuffling here. Kenny Peterson gets a start at one of the ends and Marcus Thomas becomes starting NT. I'm now a bit more sure in predicting Robert Ayres as the starter at one of the OLB positions.
4-3
| Brian Dawkins | Renaldo Hill | ||||||
| DJ Williams | Spencer Larsen | Boss Bailey | |||||
| Alphonso Smith | Elvis Dummerville | Marcus Thomas | Carlton Powell |
Robert Ayres | Champ Bailey | ||
The MSM are saying that this Broncos team are two years away from playing a true 3-4 on every down. So using that hypothesis, the defense must play some 4-3 this year, which I think is expected, especially since Coach McDaniels has mentioned versatility and hybrid enough times to give you that hint.
When it came to the starting lineup I think a good case could be made to change both DEs, both DTs and the MLB. When I was filling in the roster, I barely hesitated at putting Spencer Larsen in as a starter but the more I think about it the less happy I am with it. So feel free to make a case for other players....
Nickel
| Brian Dawkins | Renaldo Hill | ||||||
| Andre Goodman | DJ Williams | Wesley Woodyard | |||||
| Alphonso Smith | Elvis Dummerville | Darrel Ried | Marcus Thomas | Robert Ayres | Champ Bailey |
I've made a change to the line from a 4-3 to the Nickel. Ried comes in at Tackle and offers three players, with Dummerville, Ayres, who give the freedom for some form of Zone blitz while they drop into coverage. Woodyard comes in at Linebacker and Andre Goodman comes in as the Nickel corner.
Summary
It would be really easy to tinker quite a lot with these lineups and slide players from side to side and see how they look but this is my current thinking on how the team will line up. I will aim to update this after the mini-camps in June and then again once or twice during Training Camp to try and get the inside track on the final roster.

Training Camp
Will you join me in Denver July 24 thru Aug 2 to attend training camp? I would really like to evaluate these guys in camp.

that’s just a “little” obstacle ;-p
Pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and hope you come down somewhere between the two.

Great breakdown Mike....rec'd
The only thing I disagree with is for some reason I think Moss is going to find a place in either Nolan’s defense or on special teams. There is no logic for this feeling I have—so I can’t defend it—its just a gut feeling.
Guardian of the Gate to La La Land!
Gonsoulin, Taylor, Little, Wright, Gradishar, Atwater, Davis, and Sharpe...
Why are they not in the Hall...I just don't understand.
Moss will find a place!
If we drafted Moss this year he would be projected as a vey good hybrid type linebacker and not a skinny defensive end!
Don’t be surprised if he finds his natural position and surprises us all.
Thanks for this glimpse Mike
With the 12th pick, the Broncos select Knowshon Moreno - Roger Goodell

Nice work Mike
The only change I could see at the moment is Fields over Thomas at NT in the 3-4. I believe Nolan brought him in knowing what he’s capable of there. The would probably move Thomas out to battle with Powell. When I see the front seven down on paper, I can see why the Broncos weren’t so focused on drafting a DT early. I also think Baker moves into the starting lineup after the bye week.
Yeah Fields was there in V1 - change for changes sake I guess
I’m sure Baker is going to get a lot playing time in pre-season, lets hope he’s as good as an undrafted rookie can be.
great work Mike, rec'd
I really like thinking about this as the months pass. Maybe at some point you’ll include a practice squad.
I only have a couple of thoughts regarding the roster as you have it laid out. First, I think Josh Bell may beat out JMFW. I like Jack, but I thought Josh was more consistent last year. Second, with all of the versatility on the OL, we may go with 9 OL and keep an extra back. I’m hoping Branson is impressive enough to fill this slot as a TE/FB.
on further review
a friend of mind pointed out that based on recent acquisitions, neither of Bell nor Williams appear all that popular in Dove Valley. Realizing that almost every rookie DB on the Broncos is described as a “ballhawk” by one analyst or another, I think I agree. I don’t think that term is used much for Bell or JMFW.

It is a mock lineup
Mike, to bring creditablity to your article, you may want to spell the players names right. It is Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers and Darrel Reid.
IMO Jarvis Moss also may not make the 53. And I really would hate to lose Josh Bell and Josh Barrett. But now that the organization has real talent evaluators your guess work is about as good as any.
If you put Chris Baker on the PS he is claimed within minutes. Bad idea. IMO Chris Baker becomes one of the 4-5 rotaing DL. I think Coach Nunnely takes his best 4-5 DT and rotates them on the 3 man front. Baker, Powell, Thomas, Pedescleaux, Fields. Peterson would make 6. That leaves Askew, McBean, Clemons, and Parker out of a job.
Mike, remember there are only 53 slots. You have 26 offense and 26 defense PLUS 3 ST. It is tough huh.
Competition at every position!
You gotta love what McJedi is doing here folks, and while I agree for the most part with v 2.0 I can almost assure you that we’re going to be pleasantly surprised. Here’s some longshots that will be interesting to watch.
RB – Don’t be too surprised if D. Walker or the Train slip past Buckhalter. Injuries will ultimately come into play with this group but won’t it be nice to have quality depth! (Sleeper pick: Walker)
WR- I can see Chad Jackson and Nate Swift competing with Mckinley and Gaffney. Jackson knows the system at NE and Swift runs precise routes and has glue fingers. (Sleeper pick: Swift)
TE- Branson brings a lot of flexibility to the Jedi system and could be trouble for Putzier if he can block.
OL- I’m guessing they’ll keep 9 not 10 here with Polumbus,Gorin, Olson and Schleuter fighting for 3 spots loser goes to the PS. (sleeper pick: Gorin)
CB & Safeties – Bell pushes JW and Barrett pushes Bruton. By midseason Mcbath and Phonse are starters. Sleeper: Mcbath-bigger ,faster better ball-hawk than Hill (However both are better than anyone from last year)
LB- Schweiger, Haggan and Robinson pressure the Boss and Griesen – Sleeper: Schweiger -Big fast and nasty, starter at USC before transfer.
DL – Askew, Davis, Parker, Mcbean and Moss will push everyone in this group to play their best or go home. Sleeper: Davis -You gotta love the toughness and discipline this kid brings! Hey, it’s all speculation but when was the last time we had this kind of depth to speculate about? Great post and rec’d Mike.

Good stuff, a thought to add
I think Ayers will play end in the 3-4, he is strong enough and played DT quite a number of plays as a junior at TN (lifetime VOL fan here, Al Wilson is still a God). I think that Doom will be fun to watch because I truly believe he will start a play with a hand in the dirt and as soon as the QB goes under center to immediately create chaos at the line. On those plays Ayers has to keep his hand in the dirt at DE. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Ayers slide to DT and Doom line up beside him on obvious passing downs where we use a 4-3.
I agree Danny.
I really see Ayers playing at DE.

I held off until he got 56
I wanted to put him at DE in fact I think I mentioned it in v1 but then they gave him 56 as a shirt and now I’m really confused as to where he’s going.
Starters and the secondary
I think that the relationship between Hill and Goodman will keep A. Smith as the nickel back for a while yet. Goodman seems to be peaking in terms of ability and if Hill starts – which is yet to be determined – Goodman works very well with him. It wasn’t an accident that Josh pulled them both from Miami.
I’m always reluctant to assume that rookies will be ready to play right away – many are benefiting from some time to learn. However – Powell is an interesting thought at NT since he’s up to over 315. The battle with Thomas, Fields and Powell should be great for the team. Since we’re talking 3 starters in the 3-4, the idea that we are lacking DL players should be questioned. Thomas, Fields and Powell/Baker/Clemons/Peterson, we have a lot of options and some good depth. Coach McD has also been clear that he wants for Ayers to gain muscle and look at starting at DE in the 3-4. Would see Davis making the squad if he’s heathy – a TC injury would end his time with the Broncos.
The other thing that has struck me the most this past week was the DenverBroncos.com statement that we are going with a penetrating defense. That was Nolan’s preference in both previous teams – mostly a one gap system that emphasizes penetration. Of course, saying anything about the D without noting that it will be different week to week in certain respects (4-3 and 3-4 hybrid formations) would be lacking.

A lot of great thoughts in there Bear.
First, I agree that Goodman and Hill start. Experience reading plays at the NFL level are crucial at SAF, and Goodman is a proven commodity at the pro level. I LOVE Smith, but I see him starting at nickle and being a killer at that position until he cracks the #2 position.
I’m also starting to get hopeful about NT. I was calling FIelds our NT in the recent past. But with the news of Powell bulking up (and even Thomas), I’m feeling we may have a better chance at DL than I had preveiously thought.
The “penetrating” news is intriguing. If we are going to be one gap, why the “bulk up” at NT? It doesn’t hurt, but if we are playing 2 gap (which is what I have guessed at), it seems that we need at least 315 to 320 lb NTs. It could also be misdirection on the part of the Broncos, though I kind of doubt that. I’m really excited to see what ends up happening in terms of how we use the defense. It is an exciting time to be a “defense watcher”.
Another big area I’m intent on figuring out is whether Dawkins goes FS or SS.
So many options. That’s something we haven’t had in a long while.

2-gap
I’m hoping for an ultra-agressive 2-gap system that brings pressure somewhere every play. I think we verified last year that reacting to the O isn’t very effective and doesn’t generate turnovers. Think about it the superbowl was won because a safety blitzes and a LB/DE drops, picks and returns for a TD!
as in football so in life
options at safety
how I have missed them. Whne Lynch arrived, I had a sense of doom surrounding the position. It wasn’t that I thought he would do poorly, to the contrary I was stoked by the man himself. But it felt like we didn’t have a plan at the position, and I figured int eh long run he would be wasted. 2005 put my mind somewhat at ease, but it wasn’t much of a port in a safety storm that we came out of without a single starting caliber safety, and only one decent holdover rookie.
Now we have a similar situation, except I feel much better about it. The focus on every group has bolstered my confidence that Denver will finally be a town that fields a smartly constructed safety tandem, and not a misfit afterthought…
There is no army so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

roster numbers
Some comments —
OL numbers should be kept down. Teams don’t like to keep more than they absolutely need. I think a safe target number is 8. Quality may lead to keeping more, maybe 9, but keeping this number down allows them to keep more elsewhere.
It’s going to be interesting how backup OT works out, but I wouldn’t expect more than one. Olsen has the ability to swing outside, which was undoubtedly part of the reason he was drafted. This reduces the need to keep more backup, but I also don’t think they’ll want to rely on him this soon, so this is more depth for the future.
I don’t know who wins out between Polumbus and Gorin. And the amount of UDFAS says they want bring in some competition for the backup spot. On the other hand, the fact that they haven’t brought in more quality says (perhaps) that they’re content with the level of quality already at backup OT.
Re: the RBs and WRs. This may sound strange but I look at the ballhandlers as a group. It’s just my own heuristic for analyzing numbers, though. 10 total WRs and RBs is probably too few. I look for 11 as the baseline. If this were last year, I would say 6 total RBs (some are inactive but it gives meaningful depth with which to weather attrition). However, this is this year, meaning that multiple WR sets may require 6 WRs. What’s interesting about WR number is the composition of the WR corps. Ideally, we might like to add ‘aspects," such as speed or possession WR ability. I don’t know that ‘that’ will be necessary. I don’t know that it won’t. Lets just say that there’s a preponderance of slot types who share characteristics and the ability to provide something different may give us more dimension on offense (if only we had that, and we may not).
Dimension at RB is important. I like to see enough depth to fill both the speed and power back dimensions. We clearly have speed filled, especially with Moreno added to Buckhalter and Arrington, so power is a little more of an issue. Hillis fills in a pinch, but we need to have him for the FB position. I do think there’s some tension between Torain and Jordan for the last spot. 5 may be the total number of RBs so it’s going to be tough to keep them both. Jordan is actually a little better than people want to give him credit for, as an ex-Raider, but this is one of the tough cuts we may have to make.
Some heuristics — I like to use 7 DL, 9 LBs, 9 DBs. My informal looks around the league (last year) tell me that LB numbers for 3-4 teams are often high. 10 LBs and 6 DLs may make more sense. Our DE/OLBs will fill in on the DL so it’s a somewhat fuzzy number.
I like the 9 number for the DBs and the numbers at CB may expand to 5 this year. Dominique Johnson (I’ll use D.J. sometimes for him) and Carter provide some interesting possibilities. KR may be filled through added depth at CB, but Johnson also presents a possibility for a S/CB hybrid type, which is a coming trend. I guess that coverage responsibilities on big receivers (big TEs, etc.) make this function important. I don’t know if Johnson is the person to fill that duty but his physical metrics raise the possibility.
High numbers at the OLB/DE slot may be necessary to provide for different functions. I won’t go into it — because I’m not an X and O guy — but their should be some specialists who will be lumped together under one position. The point is — look for function rather then position, because they’ll be used differently.

I like your numbers, I’ll try and mesh some of that into v3 and will also take your advice and have a look at some of the other 3-4 teams rosters from last year.
2008 roster
I wanted to show last year’s roster numbers, as best as I can reconstruct them.
2008 Denver Broncos Roster
Some of these positions changed numbers during the 1st week, which made the official 53 man roster somewhat moot. I’ve reconstructed this list partly from memory for the purpose of comparison. Don’t rely on it for other purposes.
I recall that the roster was unbalanced, with a 27/23 split, but Larsen played FB so it was actually 26/24. And that was quickly changed with cuts coming even before the season’s first game. The point is that roster numbers were fluid so there’s little point in talking about ‘official’ number. I’d prefer to see the composition as it changed over time, but I don’t have those records.
Some of the moves allowed the Broncos to get players on the roster. For instance, Torain was on the 53 man squad and put on IR.
Powell spend the season on the PUP, which rules allowed.
The numbers should add up to 50, with 3 specialists, but the source I’m using was a little off. Players such as Lowry were not on the original roster, but came in soon after that in a flurry of roster moves that continued through the season.

The roster was balanced even though I remembered otherwise. The imbalance must have been Larsen, who I considered a LB at that time despite being listed at FB.
As I said, numbers shifted quickly.
Nalen hadn’t been playing so I wasn’t considering him as active, but he was part of the 53 until placed on IR — as I recall.
correction
I’ve been studying the old record.
We went in 2008 with 54 because of Marshall’s suspension. The numbers above are actually 26 Defense (not including Larsen), 25 offense (including Larsen), and 3 specialists.
I wonder about Boss Bailey
I can’t help but wonder how Boss Bailey fits into the Broncos’ long-term plans.
Many of the players Josh brought in share a common trait: Flexibility. McDaniels said he wants “football players,” which implies he’s looking for players that can stay on the field in a variety of situations. Consider how he described Knowshon Moreno after the draft; I’ll paraphrase, but he said Moreno could stay on the field for all three downs. I thought that was an interesting way of evaluating players, one that suggests he’s unwilling to pay up for a player who has to come off the field frequently.
I haven’t seen Boss play much, but my limited understanding is that he’s best suited as an OLB in a 4-3 alignment. I have a difficult time envisioning him being successful as a 3-4 OLB or as a 4-3 DE. And I don’t see him succeeding as an ILB in the 3-4 either. I think he’s a specialist and I’m not sure Josh has much patience for specialists.
If I’m right and the Broncos get rid of him, how would Champ feel about that? I’ve heard some chatter that Champ might be available for the right price (and by “chatter” I mean talk-show speculation).
When Shanahan signed Boss, I remember wondering what would happen if he didn’t work out. Would Champ stay professional? Or would he divide the locker room?
Regardless, I think Boss might be gone.
But who will guard the guards themselves?

Mcdaniels didn't comment directly on Boss when asked
and said something along the lines of “there is a lot of things we can do with Boss”. It registered with me because everyone else he talked about was very specific about how and where they could be used.
Perhaps one of the things he had in mind for Boss was cutting him?
Frankly I think it is all up to Boss. He needs to do whatever it tkes to stay healthy.
There is no army so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

Agree Styg
But its also about him being healthy. If he’s 100% by the end of camp, he’s too good a player to cut isn’t he? Providing he’s willing (and if he’s anything like his brother he will be), there will be a spot if he plays his heart out on special teams.
Maybe if someone came in with a conditional draft pick he could be on his way. And if that happened, you sure as hell know that McD would handle that better than some “other” recent trades and I think Champ’s the ultimate professional. He was the one who said “The thing you have to understand is business, anybody is expendable. There’s always going to be a point in your career where teams try and get rid of you.”.
