Wow.

Knowshon Moreno is truly impressive. I mean, that’s class, to ask his mother personally like that. Makes me wonder if he’s wearing it in part to honor D-Will. Either way, that’s very classy and I think the number is in good hands.

WE GOT MORENO!!!!

And I’m rooting for Ayers to do as well for 56 as Al Wilson did!

His middle name’s Kauwa. Aldra Kauwa Wilson. What an awful name. Not quite as bad as “A Boy Named Sue”, though.

I like this Brandstater quote:
“Fresno is a ruthless place — they demand excellence, they demand the team to win, and 7-6 isn’t good enough,” he said. “I think coming into an organization like this, it’s the same philosophy — losing isn’t acceptable. Coming from college and having that same mindset, it’s going to be a nice transition where you know there’s no excuse for losing. You’ve got to win games and that’s the only thing that matters.”

Kind of the opposite of that guy we had last year. It appears Tom B (we must get this guy a nickname very soon; Brandstater is too long to type completely) actually cares about winning… Who’d a thunk, right?

Nickname for Brandstater

How about Brando? He doesn’t look like Marlon Brando but it’s a cool name.

Funny

But I hope not, if Mcwonder(maybe his new name) picked him(with help) with intentions he had with Brady, and Cassell he may be our new franchise in the future. A name like Brando might just be a little over the top, funny though.

How about something like

Too Tall Tom.

Don't jump off the cliff but if the guys next to you are loud and annoying try to push them off.

Tis better no to throw it to the deep receiver but the open receiver.

Tom "Tater" Brandstater?

I think at Fresno they actually used to call him “Touchdown” Tommy Brandstater, although not everyone in the WAC was a fan of that judging by a Boise Broncos blog post I found. Can’t say I approve of their alternative suggestions.

“they will find themselves outside the circle of trust.” Looks like they met the Broncos parent.

I like the way McD addressed that question

He made it clear that he expected them to succeed. Sometimes, when there are questions, people sort of wait for them to fail, fairly or unfairly.

But when you see them surrounded by all those team captains, I’m inclined to support them and believe that they will do their best to be prudent men, on and off the field.

Mcdaniels

I was listening to Mcdaniels when he was talking about how much the quaterbacks need to do before the snap, and i was thinking about Cutler. I really can’t remember Cutler adjusting the plays or his cadence at the line. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the whole Cassell thing makes a little bit more sense now. Mcdaniels seems to have more of a out smart the opposing team system, as opposed to a out run and gun the opposing team philosphy. So the team makes the quaterback better, rather then the quaterback making the team better. I also like how he is using the “players” names now. Every day I’m getting more and more excited for next year, GO BRONCOS 13-3 baby.

by diviesti on May 2, 2009 8:53 AM MDT reply actions

nice point

I’ve loved the gunslinger style identity we’ve carried in Denver for 35 years, but the new system is definitely intriguing. I’m intrigued by how much emphasis he put on the QBs getting all their cadences identical and reading the defense at the line before calling the final play.

by Kfustud on May 2, 2009 9:26 AM MDT up reply actions

we were a gunslinger team?

Elway turned west coast controlled passing balanced with the run and finally became really successful! Since when did Shanny ever inspire this? Favre in GB was only successful with a similar system and coach from the same mold …Bill Walsh.
Does anybody remember our running game last year? What was a gunslinger to do but …sling? Not our philosophy by any means. It’s what Shanny’s system devolved to through injury!

Before you all start bashing Shanny again… I know, I know! He was losing his ability to see the whole picture, or at least to institute it… It was not time for a change in my mind but I can hear all the good arguments for his removal.

Never mind what I really wanted to say, but I’ve got kids in my ears…

Diviesti: You asked, I’ll go ahead and correct you…
“I really can’t remember Cutler adjusting the plays or his cadence at the line”
He was a huge studier of film and game plan who very often called plays at the line. Granted, he was a third year QB (with NO running game) who was still learning but in my opinion part of his unsackabilty, (along with Clady last year!!) was due to his ability to get away from the line without the defense reading his cadence.

BTW Elway, an cadence EXPERT… learned from Shanny too. …who learned from the genius before him (BW) The subtle nuances of the game are a staple of Walsh’s system. Very similar to Belicheck’s. Smart. Josh I’m sure, being clearly a smart guy himself, has no doubt taken bits from every system and hopefully made them his own… I look forward to seeing them attempt to live up to the very successful, often brilliant system that preceded him.

I’m all for pointing out McD’s strengths (I hope for them!), just not at the expense of the genius of his predecessor. (who may or may not have run his course here)

Top of the Morning, NYC

Apologies for my faux-McDaniels-hating-troll routine yesterday. I think things got pretty out of hand. You work like a madman to put Horse Tracks together, and I appreciate it immensely. Didn’t mean to make it into my personal playground or start an out-of-control argument with actual trolls.

back on point...

"
1. Stockpile draft talent; pick smart, with an eye on the future.
2. Make a big move only when necessary.
3. Try to avoid having to rely on the draft for immediate help.
4. Make a tough decision and cut losses when when necessary.
5. Know when the team is too good to make use of all its draft picks and sell a few for future years.
6. Stay ahead of problems.
"
Sounds like a good structure. I can see areas where we followed this and those where we didn’t.

I’ll give Josh #4, i don’t want to rehash it

  1. & #3 are iffy, on one hand he seems to have put winning now above building for the future but that is the nature of the league and his position in particular. Also, drafting the best player available rather than reaching for needs… does imply a look towards the future.
  2. Which big move? Not trading up for Raji? I’m ok with our early picks. Trading the #1? Seems to apply here. (As well as no eye towards the future if that pick is as valuable as i see it)
  3. Let’s hope we have this issue one day!
  4. I’d say McD is on his way to making this his team. He has a very specific program in mind & his players seem to be buying it. It shows every sign of being a tried and true program that doesn’t allow for a lot of foreseeable problems. You gotta LOVE Belicheck’s team identity! We’ll see if Josh can sell that here… if he does, a new era might very well be apon us.

Still, the timing now seems a good story for this team in need of identity and solidarity. Feels good to me.

Austin Murphy on Al

That SI piece killed me. Too funny, almost painfully so. (Or just painful if you’re a Raiders fan.)

Defenders of Davis — who will turn 80 in two months — say he’s crazy like a fox.

And that is true — provided the fox is aging, compromised and semi-delusional. But give Davis this: The man is always entertaining — in the same way it is entertaining to try to divine the intentions of other such unstable autocrats as Fidel Castro, Kim Jong-il and Mr. Burns from The Simpsons.
