What I am looking for from the Denver Broncos in 2009
Many people are starting to wonder or “predict” how Denver will fair and what they will do this year. Will the Broncos be competitors? Will they win 2, 3, 8, 9 games? This is not that type of post. I want to explain my point of view, where I am coming from and what I want to see from each position and players at that position. From the team all I ask is that when you suit up on game day you play the entire 60 minutes of football.
Offense:
As a group we didn’t lose a whole lot. What I am looking for is a team that plays well between the 20’s but more importantly, a team that comes away with points inside the 20. At this point I will take 3 if the other option is a turnover.
Quarterback:
Obviously from a sheer talent perspective we have taken a step back. I do not think we have replaced talent for talent. What we have done this offseason is become more competent and coachable. Things I noticed towards the end of last season included Jay being unwilling to change his style to keeps us competitive. Sheer talent we stepped back, overall I think we have progressed. All I ask is that we field the QB who wants to win most, the guy who will do his best to get the ball to the guy that makes the play and not turn it over.
Running backs:
This is probably our best position when it comes to depth. Moreno, Hillis Buckhalter, and the others bring different things to the table. You have your Power backs highlighted by Hillis, you have your speed backs highlighted by Buckhalter and then you have Moreno who you would say is coming as a franchise back. Remember, Davis had his spell and fullbacks as well. All I want is a RB or even tandem of guys who are going to pound it and pound it hard and efficiently.
Wide Receivers:
What a crop and we just keep adding. Brandon Marshall is a player many teams would covet. Eddie Royal brings his own skill set to the table. Brandon Stokely is arguably the best Slot in the game and then you add guys like Jackson, McKinley and Gaffney. They all may not be the best WR in the NFL but they play their roles well and are going to study to be better. I want guys who will catch that ball and make a play but more importantly I want NO fumbles.
Tight Ends:
Daniel Graham is the top dog here but Branson Scheffler, Quinn and Putzier all have roles to play. Scheffler and Putzier are receiving TE and have little to offer on the blocking end. Graham and Quinn are blockers who have unannounced soft hands for the ball. Branson is the unknown but looks a little like a mix of both types of TE and could possibly run the ball a little in “H” back type roles like Hillis is expected to get. All I am asking is play your assignment. If it is block, than block if it’s running a route, then hustle your kiester out there and run the route.
Offensive Line:
The Secret Service did their job well last year so they just need to keep doing their thing! All I want is these guys to stay healthy and do their thing. Not much more needs to be said.
Defense:
The group was dismal last year and its hard to say there is nowhere to go but up when your defense couldn’t even find the door to get out of the basement last season. That said it looks like there is some strong competition at all positions. Show up and play that’s all I ask.
Defensive Line:
The bane of our existence last year, our front line was horrendous. What I want this year and what I am seeing is guys HUNGRY to be there. Guys who want to crush heads every time the ball is snapped and aren’t afraid of the occasional (not a lot) off sides call to keep offensive lines scared.
Linebackers:
What we have here is a collective group that when entirely healthy, is one of the best. This isn’t the tandem we had in Gold Williams and Wilson but it is a good group of hungry players. What I want is to put players who want to play guys who will put it all out there EVERY play of the game. That’s all I want.
Defensive Backs:
Easily our defensive strength but as HT has said you can’t keep your man FOREVER. No pass rush = reception. Pass rush = Interception. What I want are guys who spend time with film and learn how to play their assignments.
Special Teams:
North of the 50 I want to start every offensive series north of the 50. How? Learn your post and learn the plan. Block for the runner and tackle the other team’s runner. If we start north of the 50 and the opposition starts south of the 30, we will win! Promise! I also want less of our games to rely on our kicker and punter but I want them to be good as well. Inside the 40 I want our kicker to be money. Our punter needs to keep them starting south of the 20.
That’s all

Sometimes a "step" back is necessary to make 2 steps forward.
1) I believe the RZ scoring will be one improvement.
2) Hillis and Moreno are going to be hard to stop.
3) BMarshs’ hip could be a concern. Jackson and Gafney may have a chance there.
4) The OLine and TE’s are set pretty.
5) Much improvement on defense (couldn’t get much worse) this year, hopefully they can be 18th or lower.
6) ST being 1/3 of the game should be better, how better we’ll have to see. Since the “wedge” has been done away with, there will be different blocking schemes. Keeping the opposing team below the 30 is a must if they want to compete. Great job Jon. 13-3 Baby!!!

Exactly….. we got used to that…….playing hard……never quitting……..coming from behind….that is the Bronco way…….the last couple years there were so many blowouts, so many times we rolled up and died.
I want to see that competing spirit again.
I want to see people dread coming to the Mile High City again!
I really really believe we will too!

Depth
Your comment about the RBs made me realize that depth is a huge difference from last year’s team. We appear much better stacked at all positions this year. This bodes well, as depth is a hallmark of quality teams (Pats and Chargers come to mind).
FYI TE tangent: both Quinn and Branson converted from WR in high school, and both played basketball. From the moment he touched the field in college, Branson led his team in receiving (yes, as a TE position).

We are looking mighty fine accross the board
as for Quinn and Branson I think they pan out a lot better than most expect but I try to hold my optimism in a bit. Quinn really adds another Graham to the team which is my desire since no one can replace Sharpe.

Defensive line
I gotta disagree with your assessment of the 2008 D-line. There’s been a lot of talk, especially in the MSM, about how horrible our D-line was last year, but that’s just not so. The D-line has been unfairly made the scapegoat for the entire defense. When I’ve gone back and looked though, they actually weren’t as bad as I had thought and the statistics bear this out.
Against the run the line was actually adequate last year. For the most part they did not get pushed around, certainly nothing like 2007. What did happen was that when runners broke through the line, which is going to happen, the LBs and SAFs were so often out of position that it turned into a long gain. The Broncos gave up the most runs over 10 yards (and almost any length over 10) of any team. If the LBs and SAFs had merely performed average at stopping long runs the Broncos actually would have vaulted into the top 10 run defenses. That’s not the D-line!
Push rush is seemingly a different matter, but was it? We were all frustrated as opposing QBs seemed to have all the time in the world to set up and find an open man. But what do you expect when you only rush 3 AND you play soft coverage???
But when the Broncos did scheme to bring pressure, like the first half of the Buffalo game, they did provide pressure. The Broncos actualy were ranked 19th in adjusted sack rate. Okay that’s not the NYGs but it’s not as attrocious as the talking heads make it out to be. Where could they have been if Slowwit had schemed to bring pressure all season?
The best upgrade on defense was probably hiring Nolan and bringing in Nunnely!

as do I
I dont know that we were as bad as made out to be but we were definitely bad. Add a poor defense + and inconsistent QB and you get an 8-8 out of the playoff team. I would put a lot of blame of the coaching staff for defense last year, but some of the players we had didnt help.

Oh, I dont know . . .
I think we were pretty mediocre at best. Part of that may be scheme (this is why I love football – scheme and play-calling can make such a difference), but a pretty fair amount could be talent or lack thereof. We simply didn’t have defensive guys go beyond the scheme and step up and make plays. How many times did anyone on the D-line shoot the gap and drop a ball carrier behind the line. How many times did we pressure the QB without bringing LBs and DBs? How many passes did the DL knock down. How many years has it been that we can’t effectively play our best pass defense because we keep needing to play a safety in the box to help stop the run? Yeah, we gave up big runs partly due to scheme, but some of it was general lack of speed at the LB and safety positions. I don’t think it’s good enough to just have guys that are hungry – they need to be talented as well AND the scheme has to fit the personnel. Man, I can’t wait for the season to start so we can stop speculating and start playing ball. Go Broncs!
It's "just" football

Good points Donk
However, you just don’t get to the NFL without any talent at all. All the players have talent, albeit some are much more talented than others. Problem is if you don’t take advantage of the talent you do have, you’ll end up looking like the Broncos of 2008….inconsistent. I think SWG brings up a great point…our greatest additions to the defense was/is Nolan and Nunnely. They’ll definetly put the talent we do have to good use. I don’t see it as a top ten D yet, but I do think we will be top 20 overall and start to show measured improvement by the bye week.
by bchiper on May 20, 2009 12:51 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
To add another point
Just by observation, it appeared that we lacked a Quarterback on Defense the past 2 years.
You know, an onfield "coach calling out formations and counter – audibling the opposing Offense. It sure seemed like the D was flailing around out there pretty often, being out of position. Just saying.

Excellent point!
We have lacked leadership on defense – the Al Wilson/John Lynch or Romo/Atwater who made certain that everyone was aligned properly and played their position. I think the addition of Davis & Dawkins goes far beyond their individual play.

I don’t know that “lack of talent” is an excuse for a defense performing poorly. All these guys made it into the NFL. They are all top athletes, and very talented.
I believe that, at the NFL level, it’s always the coaching, teaching, scheming that makes the biggest difference. All the players are talented. Sure, some more than others by a smidgeon, but they are all talented.
I think that Slowik was in over his head and could not utilize, teach, nor coach his players correctly. He has never done well as a DC anywhere, and the prior year with Bates, it was also poor utilization and coaching, poor adjusting, trying to use schemes that were not going to work with our system.
Players need time to learn a scheme and grow with it. You can’t change DCs every year and expect improvement.
It’s all about coaching, teaching, and scheming at the NFL level.

The MSM has rammed it down our throats about the D to such an extent we became puzzled over the draft and its so called “failure to address”. However there has to be a logical assumption that given the scheme(s) the coaching staff would have made moves if they were not convinced that what they already had would not fit into the longer term plan.
With time spent in minicamp and no doubt the hours of film Coach Nolan et al must have watched, they must be happy with what they have and whom the have brought in through FA.
With better field position through ST, and a longer time of possession with the revamped offense plus a REAL leader in Dawkins, this D will finish in the top 15. Better coaching, better schemes with players fitting those schemes is going to make 2009 a season of endless possibilities.
One final point. The secondary causes as many sacks as the D line does. A covered receiver equals no one to throw to which equals the longer the QB has the ball.

I think it can
lets be serious, last year if you double teamed Dumervil and Thomas last year who did you have on the line to deal with? No one in my opinion was worth a double team besides those two (also who I saw getting doubled last season). This year we have hungry guys on the line who want to create pressure!

I may be wrong
but i think we will be in the top 15 based on two things. Longer ball control scoring drives and more pressure everywhere. I can’t wait to see us hit people and make them think twice about the play they just called.

Ditto that
Nunnely was a huge pickup.
We keep hearing how we didn’t address the line enough in the draft, but one can surmise that such an obvious “oversight” was because Nunnely and Nolan had assessed the talent and decided to hold course with some of the current players. Obviously we aren’t going to get all the changes made in one year, but it wasn’t that long ago Shanahan devoted nearly the entire draft to acquire more defensive talent (for what that was worth). Some of those players like Moss, Thomas, and Crowder may yet pay some dividends.

The secondary
Bailey – One of the best (if not THE best) CBs of all time.
Dawkins – Not only the best FS of all time, but revolutionized the position.
Goodman and Hill – Solid, experienced veterans.
Smith – Should have been a top ten pick (overlooked because of size). Ball hawking, record setting wonder.
We have a legendary secondary right now. As JT points out in the post, we just need the pass rush. In my thinking, if we can generate even a reasonable pass rush even some of the time, we have the potential to shock the NFL in pass defense. A lot of “ifs” there, but the DB personnel in the equation are very safe variables.

Pass rush
I have a theory about that. I believe Shanahan and Slowik did not have confidence in their secondary last year, hence they were reluctant to gamble much on blitzing. Of course the subsequent lack of pressure meant trouble covering the deep ball. Slowik adjusted by going to soft coverage which meant we conceded 5-6 yard on every pass play. Essentially they played scared and you cannot play defense that way.
With this secondary we can afford to gamble much more, sending all kinds of creative blitzes. Blob is right, the secondary does help to create pressure and sacks.
by SlowWhiteGuy on May 22, 2009 9:07 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Another theory
Perhaps the Broncos were so afraid of our poor run defense that they didn’t want to blitz, wanted the extra safety in the box, and OVER trusted the secondary to accomplish miracles. It is really hard to tell. Either theory could be right – so difficult was it to make sense of last year’s playcalling and system on defense.
Good thoughts.

I lean toward the latter theory
based on Slowik’s familiarity with his DBs, i really feel like he was putting the onus on them to, as you say, be miracle workers.

I have seen Atwater and Dennis Smith, John Lynch, Ronnie Lott, Rod Woodson, as well as others… but when is Dawkins ever mentioned among that group?
