THE WILD CARDS ON THE ROSTER – UFA’S and Special Teams
Bronco’s football fever begins to take hold as the calendar inches closer to training camp.
MHR fan posts begin to fill with discussions about hope-to-be rosters and speculations on what Coach McDaniels and DC Nolan are really going to do.
Obviously, this speculation/discussion is all for fun :-), since the OTA’s and passing camp have just started, the pre-season injuries have not occurred, and the stars have not broken out from the pack yet.
There have been some excellent posts on MHR concerning the Roster and Depth Chart – One being the following:
Shallow Thoughts & Nearsighted Observations by TedBartlett905 On May 25, 2009
So let me add more food for thought that looks at another angle.
I believe that Special Teams play is going to change dynamically for two reasons.
1) The NFL rules change curtailing (downsizing) the blocking wedge to a maximum of two players working in tandem (if there are more than two return team members lined up shoulder to shoulder that lead the blocking it will be a 15-yard penalty at the spot of the wedge). I envision that Kick-off return and coverage teams will be more comprised of players that are considered athletic agile and fast. Think smaller, quicker - linebacker, safety or tight-end types. It will be interesting to see – what evolves, but I no longer see the middle of the field clogged with lineman bodies.
2) Josh McDaniels brought in 17 Undrafted (college) free agents. Normally, one would expect only a handful to make the team or be eligible to be placed on the Practice Squad. However, this is closer to a total team re-building than many of us long-time Bronco fans have ever seen. So, the Coach will continue to look for “Football Players” to put on his final roster.
Some Foundational Information on Rosters:
53-man Protected Roster:
Prior to the opening week of the season, each team must trim its roster to 53 active players by waiving all other players and/or placing them into alternative designations (e.g., IR, Suspended,PUP etc.).
On regular-season game days the team names its 45-man Active Roster which defines those players who may participate in the game. In addition, each team is allowed to name one of the remaining 8 players as its emergency backup QB--that player can only play QB and can only play in the event of injury to the team's #1 and #2 QBs.
8-man Practice Squad:
After all teams have set their 53-man rosters prior to opening day and each team has passed 24-hours on acquiring the contracts of every other player waived by the other 31 NFL teams, each team may sign up to 8 players to occupy its developmental Practice Squad. These players practice with their teams but cannot dress on game days.
Further, any other team may claim a team's PS player on waivers at any given time during the season -- the only stipulation to this is that the team signing the PS player must immediately add that player to its 53-man roster.
A player is eligible for the PS if he:
- Has no prior Accrued Seasons in the NFL
- Has one prior Accrued Season in which he was on the 45-man active roster for no more than 8 games
- Has been on the PS with the particular team no more than 2 prior seasons

WR |
Nate Swift |

FB |
Marquez Branson |
Central Arkansas |
6'2" 247lbs, this is our Hillis clone, in case the unthinkable happens. Good receiver, excellent blocker with plenty of pop, and has experience as a true H-back. Not as supremely talented as Hillis, but a scrappy guy who will surprise any team that takes or faces him. |

Alcorn State |
6'2" 249lbs, He is a good tackler, reads plays well and is instinctual in following the play to the ball. Like WW, one of his strongest assets is keeping blockers away from his legs and keeping hands out of his frame, which leaves him free to make the tackle at the line of scrimmage. |

ANALYSIS & THOUGHTS
Under a “normal” season (2008), the NFL average of UFA’s making the final roster is TWO, and the practice squad is 3-4. However, I believe that Coach McDaniels this year will come close to Tripling/Doubling those 2008 average numbers. With J.J. Arrington being cut (injury) the Kick Return position is wide open.
I could reasonably see Six UFA players making the final roster: (ST Special Teams Starter)
NT-Chris Baker,
RB Kestahn Moore, ST
WR Nate Swift ST
WR Travis Shelton ST
LB Lee Robinson ST
DE Rulon Davis ST
Practice Squad:
RB Marquez Branson,
DE Everette Pedescleaux
CB Tony Carter
CB Domonique Johnson
WR David Grimes
LB Braxton Kelley

On waivers?
I thought that the player was only on the wire until he made the practice squad, then they were safely on your practice squad.
unfortunately no
wikipedia has a rather concise summary of the roster & practice squad

correct
however it is dangerous to take a player off someone else’s practice squad because they are fairly unproven. It is not common practice unless you are desperate for a position!

PS player subject to being claimed??
I don’t think that is correct. Unless the rule has changed in the last few years. In 05, the Broncos signed C Chris Meyers (CFA) out of Miami. He was waived and then signed to the Broncos PS. Before long, some other team tried to sign him to their active roster, but the Broncos made him an offer he accepted and he was signed to the Broncos active roster. (Meyers was traded a couplke years later to Houston).
this is from Wikipedia (google NFL practice squad)
Players can be promoted to the active roster either by their current team, or by another team who is scouting them. They retain free agent status and may sign with any team they wish without compensation to the original team.
So, my understanding is that at the time of the final cut down, a player who is cut can be claimed by any other team during the next 24 hours. After 24 hours, he is a free agent and can sign with any team. If he signs to a PS, he can then be signed by any team to their active squad if he agrees to it. He’s a free agent after the 24 hours.

Wow
that’s a lot of information. Rec’d just on the research alone.

Excellent Post
The only thing that I would change is:
Pedescleaux makes the final roster and Moore goes to the PS. That is just a gut feeling though and Pedescleaux being my pick for suprise player from UFA.
BtD
If you think I hate you, you may have a point.
Agreed...
If Pedescleaux goes to PS some other team will pick him up.
I think both he and Baker make the squad.
Great article man!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????
It was a toss up
I agree about Pedescleaux possibly being picked up by another team, however I really like the upside of Moore being experienced as a lead blocker on the return team.
Served a large role on special teams as the lead blocker on punt and kickoff returns…
UPDATE – Current UFA list down to 16 – Jeff Schweiger cut on Friday
To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also DREAM; not only plan, but also BELIEVE.
Thanks for the thoughts and data.
Was helpful to me particularly around the PS. Have wondered about the specifics there.
Good luck to our UFAs!!!
This is a great post broncobh.
The mere fact that if a team picks one of your players off the practice squad they have to immediately place that player on the 53 man roster. Now what would happen if that player became mysteriously injured after being placed on the roster?
I agree with you all
Great post. Personally, I’m going to wait for camp, to worry about who McD will keep. Then I will ponder things. However, I AM glad that you chose this topic for discussion because I did not want to delve into it. So I thank you for your valuable effort, brocobh
With the 12th pick, the Broncos select Knowshon Moreno - Roger Goodell
That'll move the chains - Andy Samberg
KK might thoughts exactly
I’m going to wait for training camp as well. I have been surprised by several moves since McDaniels took the helm. Not that they were all bad, they just caught my limited thinking off guard.
